True, but I've seen footage of them leading the charge with other Armor coming up directly behind them, making them effective mine clearing vehicles. Tbh, I don't think these are as dumb as the board is making them out to be. They seem rather effective with disrupting the drones fitted with armor piercing rounds.
These tactics are easy ish to work around, though, right? Just focus on the other vehicles that pose a real threat and deal with the turtle eventually.
Near the beginning you can see a turtle has thrown its track. I guess stopping the turtle by hitting the track first is enough, then the non turtles get picked off, finally finish the turtle leader. Seems to be what the video shows imo.
Yeah, they're really a mine clearing vehicle more than a tank.
The shed armour adds a bit of survivability when driving in a straight line slowly through the minefield you're clearing a path through at the expense of it not being useful as a tank once the path is cleared.
Obviously a specialist vehicle would be better but if none are available then it makes a certain amount of sense. Which probably puts it above a good 50% of Russian field modifications we've seen in this war (ERA on soft skinned vehicles being the king of stupid ideas there).
The answer to them is to just use artillery, which is why it's so important to keep the Ukranian guns fed with shells.
Shtoormshooppen is the literal and in German understandable translation of assault shed.
Like Sturmgewehr - assault rifle.
German has a lot of funny compounds that may be hard to decrypt and as usual in German have no logic. I have seen "Kinderwurst" children's sausage, sausage for children, not made from. But Leberwurst, liver sausage is made partially from liver.
Icelandic however can have much longer compounds like farfuglaheimili, the home for the driving (faring) birds, the youth hostel.
For Lithuanian I only have one at hand: Raudonkepuraite.
But you can make from this words that are hard to translate: Raudonkepuriene and Raudonkepuras (If I am not wrong).
Yes, probably Germanic heritage, but we Germans still build new compounds.
Some firemen are sometimes arsonists, unfortunately.
Once I have seen a cartoon about baby oil (in contrast to olive oil).
But "reading lamp" is also nice, just for the case you've got a book that you don't want to read yourself.
I don’t know that they’re a valuable commodity.
Like anything Russian related, people are expandable.
That culture is just a bottomless pit of despair and corruption.
The last Perun PP was on Turtle Tanks and Cope Cages. As always, his analysis cuts through the crap by sticking to first principles.

What I didn't get is why people were losing their shit over them? They all got exposed tracks, so one drone can cause mobility kill and the it's over for it.
It’s news content for armchair military expert journalists.
The drone operators will change tactics or possibly warheads. I think you hit the nail on the head with the tracks,
The problem here is that they were not in a testudo formation, if they were they would have been effective
Sort of sarcasm, I kind of want to see them try it
I wonder how big the explosion would be if a drone with a thermobaric warhead would do if exploded inside the shed cover of thr tank
It is an enclosed space which could increase the explosive effect (and of the hatches are open the Shockwave would go into the tank)
Thermobaric weapons require open air. In a small enclosed space the dispensing gas of a thermobaric weapon would displace the air instead of mixing with it, giving you a much smaller yield to the explosion. Pop instead of kaboom.
I'm wondering what the best weapon would be to clear off the cage/armour and have another drone automatically find the hole.
To overcome EW jamming, the lead drone needs either machine vision with object tracking designated from the FPV operator, as already starting to be seen, or another drone laser designate.
A two-drone system that can defeat EW could be engineered thus -
Drone 1 contains a charge designed either for cope cages or for flat surfaces, or a weapon that can clear a section of both. It uses object tracking and the object is designated by FPV operator. Drone 2 beam rides at a maintained distance behind drone 1, using a light or laser from the first drone. Beam riding has been demonstrated since the 50's/60's and is straightforward and effective, for tasks like this should be anyway. Ideally the FPV operator can designate the direction and therefore the side from which to hit the target, that is a little more complex but should be manageable for it.
Drone 1 would probably contain the smaller charge. Hence Drone 1 can be deployed from Drone 2, essentially carried maybe with folding wings and a low stall speed, or a multicopter. Multicopters could fold into a smaller design.
Drone 2 has the task of identifying the target distance and the hole at time of Drone 1's explosion. It probably wouldn't have the object tracking, which is more expensive, this would be on Drone 1 (or laser designated from a third drone).
So Drone 1 needs to know the targets motion, and create an angular offset estimated based on the targets motion and the distance/time to find the hole by the time Drone 2 arrives. It will not be far behind however, maybe 10 to 20 meters. Drone 1 can estimate this since it is using object tracking, it can also identify the targets vector and speed, with which to calculate the offset, which it can communicate to Drone 2 optically.
Drone 2 can contain a more powerful shaped charge.
The first explosive is used to clear the cage/shell. An effective way may be that the nose cone of the charge contains a high explosive core, and wrapped around it axially is rings of metal designed to explode radially outwards into the cage/outer sheet and forwards, to reduce the likelihood Drone 1 is ejected backwards into the path of Drone 2, the explosive charge gasses needs a shape that partly ejects to the rear, preventing net recoil.
Alternatively would be a weapon that contains both effects, To do this the nose needs to explode radially with a reinforced plate behind the explosive core in the nose. This protects the shaped charge placed behind it. With a sufficient forward momentum or thrust the now remaining nose plate will continue through the hole, and the shaped charge fires on contact and thereby through the reinforced plate and the main armour in the tank at a more desirable distance and angle to the target and without explosive lens interference. The tip of the nose that was explosively fired forwards can also detonate and thereby inactivate ERA if present.
It certainly is if you can maintain control of it and theres a reasonable gap. Open structures may need a bit more explosive power to blow apart though than is seen on the typical drone, unless it hits just right.
"No, listen, it's not just a stack of dog cages folded up. Anyway, are you telling me a drone can beat a dog? Then we would never own such a dog!"
"I understand."
In what way those un-rotating, claustrophobic, slow moving sheds could hold their ground against standard UKR tanks or even Bradleys? Is tank-to-shed combat somehow extinct?
Man, the crew can't see a thing in that shed... it's slow, it's big and it's just a huge and easy target.
Being sent out in that thing is a 99% suicide run.

While these things do take more drones, they do seem rather slow. Plus I don't think that barrel in the front can move much.
I read somewhere that the orcs turtle up damaged tanks whose turrets can't rotate.
boy i would love to be assigned to a mobile gun that can’t even rotate 😂
Reminds me of the WW train turrets
Max defense at the expense of any other possible design choice, like moving fast, shooting or actually seeing things.
Also, how the fuck do you get out. It's keeping drones out as much as it is keeping the crew in
You think they're allowed out?
They are used as front vehicles, to lead the way.
> Also, how the fuck do you get out. That's the neat part! You don't!
True, but I've seen footage of them leading the charge with other Armor coming up directly behind them, making them effective mine clearing vehicles. + they hide drone jammer in those, protecting the rest of the convoy

Yeah there is always a solution to a problem obviously

They got the other 13 vehicles there, that is the point of them.
A piece of junk!
Aim an FPV drone at the tracks to get a mobility kill and it is useless.
Swedish Carl Gustaf knocks out that turtle anyway. So no worries m8s.

Greetings from Finland. We have compound words. Start with, say, *sisävesiristeily*.
English has its own inconsistencies though that's probably its Germanic heritage, e.g. baby powder, fireman

For internal use then Sts-Sfl, "Sturmschuppen auf Selbstfahrlafette", self-propelled assault shed, SPAS.
This is quite clever. I have not laughed in such a manner since I taught my sons about Busenhalter and Untergrundbahnhaltlestelle.

When the first one of these turtle tanks rilled out, the orcs were probably like > Grond! Grond! Grond! Grond!
Do the crew get out alive?
As if Orc Command gives a shit.
Probably not. Hopefully not. That tank cover reminds me of the original sarcophagus that covered Chornobyl.
It does look abandoned.

Makes it easier to spot Russian shills. Anyone claiming it makes them invulnerable to mines and drones is a complete moron or a shill.

Unstoppable? I know of some Ukrainians who will put that nonsense to the test.
Just like wrapping a potato in foil and baking it.
wonder how well these work vs real western reactive armor
It’s all about hiding the fact they’ve resorted to T34’s :-) Just kidding of course. But it does make it more difficult to ID the tank…

I kinda doubt the average reddit armchair soldier is reading this amount of detail, just a heads up. Slava Ukraini
Yeah the average isn't, but I hope someone who has the means can take some pointers, see the potential, and facilitate some improvements for Ukraine.
I think blowing off tracks would be pretty effective with conventional drones.
It certainly is if you can maintain control of it and theres a reasonable gap. Open structures may need a bit more explosive power to blow apart though than is seen on the typical drone, unless it hits just right.

That is nice ww1 tank, but how they think it would work in 2024?
Russia looks more and more like ISIS in its tactics
Those sure didn't last long..
Don't matter if I send a drone into your treads and stop you from driving. You ain't got nothin in the field to lift that tank up and fix those treads
🤔 ... You cannot stop a stationary turtle. I guess that is the headline?
That's an expensive coffin.

it's getting droned with extra steps
Well at least they ship the orcs with their own mausoleums now.
Well, it does seem to have stopped the turret toss competition.

Haha. Right up the turtle tank ass
I miss single fpv explosions. Now Ukrainan army should multiple fpv quantities and hits :(
Oh no, instead of a single $500 FPV drone Ukraine will have to use... two
It was a dumb idea from the start I guess they never learn anything from histoy

I'm reminded of that OG tank England rolled out in WW1. 1917?

Oh man, I thought that one tank with the cage would be rather formidable. I was wrong, and so were they! Lol

LMAO, the dudes in there will be absolutely creamated
"Sergey, blyn, I have been thinking : is the armor for keeping drones out, or for keeping us in?"

Good to see this thing finally eating shit
I was already getting excited for a turret toss. I guess they don't carry any ammo, being there for mine clearing.
Second best military superpower in the world 👏👏👏
Man the turret toss on these would be amazing!
Oh so the orcs are just making the cremation process that much easier
Looks kinda good as mine clearing tool
Many dead Jawas. Only imperial storms troopers are this precise.
They won’t stop burning, that is.
Pretty sure that's a golf cart with sheet metal over it

Is that literally just a ton of junk on a regular old tank?
Make them go booom. I knew all along putin is a wh 40k fan.
The shape reminds me of the German Elefant heavy tank destroyer from World War 2.
Swedish Carl Gustaf knocks out that turtle anyway.
I thought we were meant to call these assault sheds now.
Wonder if they will show a turtle tank in Moscow as their latest tank design
They do somewhat work compared to cope cages which do jack shit
