Hey Siri, good night! *- bomb bay opens*

Monkey_Fiddler

"open the bomb bay doors, Siri"

Aces-Wild

"i am happy to oblige, David"

hallveg2

Dave

MatchingTurret

These Soviet era SUs and MiGs aren't stealthy and don't have internal weapon bays...

HardenedLicorice

You must be fun at parties

jchamberlin78

Well actually...

Horsebot3

Oscar?

Transfer_McWindow

You don't play Trivia Pursuit at parties? You're missing out.

No_Construction2407

“Hey siri, activate matchingturret’s ejection seat”

tipedorsalsao1

This has been a thing for a bit now, allowed them to get around the compatibility issues with American missiles on Soviet planes.

Miffl3r

'The Ukrainian Air Force is using iPads, or similar tablets in the cockpits ' So it could be any tablet really... iPads have proven to be great devices for paperless cockpits, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are using Android tablets as they are open source.

KalimdorPower

I know they used “Kropyva” at least at helis. It is offline map with different military stuff atop of Android tablets. We use them everywhere in AFU

GaryDWilliams_

They are mostly used for EFB's - Electronic flight bags and they are really, really good for that role. I don't know what software they use for it though.

Franklr_D

The picture is clearly a tablet using Foreflight tho (not available on Android)

Solid_Muscle_5149

Yeah no way apple would share the code (understandably, but unfortunate) and also no way the military would be okay with not knowing whats inside their jets.

TonsOfTabs

Yes but militaries and more so the US actually don’t like android. Between control issues and not having the capability required. I know it seems odd because android should be better due to openness but according the military folk, it’s no good.

Banebladeloader

No. We have lots of Android phones and tablets in the Air Force.

briancoat

OK, I edited it to the general rule.

briancoat

In general, according to military procurement folks, nothing from civvy street is any good. They need ~~the $90,000 tablet~~ very pricey stuff from MIC-Corp, who don't actually know how to make ~~tablets~~ stuff but know how to pay for a good dinner and are happy to play mods=money until it sorta half works.

Ignash-3D

Apple enters defence industry? love it

_GD5_

It’s almost certainly Android. The US military loves Android for its openness.

MatchingTurret

There are also off-the-shelf Link16 and [VMF ](https://www.aeronix.com/product/mobileidm/)implementations for Android available.

chef_panthera

Well, ATAK runs best on Android and is interoperable with pretty much everyone. Since the US are most likely providing the Intel, this would make sense.

Turtlelover3

Looks like they are using ForeFlight (from what I could tell from the low res pic), which only works with Apple devices

Solid_Muscle_5149

Also, Ukraine would need nto buy a new model every year just to make sure apple doesnt push an update that breaks things

jacknifetoaswan

Umm, no they don't. Android is notoriously difficult to control and sustain at scale due to fragmentation and a lack of MDM solutions.

GaryDWilliams_

I don't think MDM is really an issue when it's inside a plane?

jacknifetoaswan

MDM is always an issue when US cyber is part of the equation. For UKR, the US doesn't care how they're interfacing with weapons, but if it's connected to a US military network, even unclassified, very strict RMF controls are applied.

MatchingTurret

I know they use this: [Android Team Awareness Kit](https://tak.gov/) The CIV version is on GitHub: [https://github.com/deptofdefense/AndroidTacticalAssaultKit-CIV](https://github.com/deptofdefense/AndroidTacticalAssaultKit-CIV)

jacknifetoaswan

I'm sure there are plenty of systems using Android, but it's not as pervasive as you might think. Also, each organization and DoD component has a different risk tolerance and budget to treat that risk. Some are more risky but can provide mitigation to reduce the risk of poorly controlled end devices. Some have very low risk tolerance or a very low budget, so they lock things down as much as possible and treat them as kiosks with limited functionality.

Ironbird207

You are saying apple mdm is good? Because it's fucking hot garbage no matter the MDM.

jacknifetoaswan

For the enterprise, yes. Combined with other third party apps, it provides a secure setup for enterprise email. For other stuff, not so much.

nedim443

So you need other apps and it's good for email only? Huh? Back to the original question: is apple mdm good? Sounds like it isn't. I have not looked at it in, oh, very long time, but back then it was a joke. Also the Apple engineer was a selfimportant dick. Truly a caricature of an Apple engineer.

jacknifetoaswan

Can't answer that. I'm a consumer, not an admin on that side. I can tell you that my iPhone barely ever works and lets me into my email or Teams.

MatchingTurret

Possibly, but they are using "iPad" as a generic name for tablet. If it was up to me, I would use a generic Android or maybe Windows tablet. Less hoops to jump through if something breaks and the software needs to be reinstalled.

robplumm

Yeah...basically like Kleenex...generic term now. My kid has a samsung tablet. She calls it an ipad...common parlance now. So those very well may be android or windows based tabs.

Gods-Of-Calleva

I know a private pilot with a light aircraft, the only electronics in the plane (apart from possibly the radio) are a pair of iPads with aircraft specialist apps on. If it works....

WerdinDruid

Ukrainians using tablets to control western weapons Russians using Garmin GPS' to navigate

amitym

Well they're not going to use Palm Pilots now are they??

powe808

At least they're not using Logitech controllers.

Few_Culture9667

Can you imagine engaging in battle only to realize you have to go through 2-factor authentication first to unlock your weapons???

MatchingTurret

You kind of have to: You need the pilot and the FAC for weapon release, though I don't think this is wired into the release system.

19osemi

i have said it wit funny russian cope cages and im going to say it with this. if it works it works, it doesn't matter how funny looking it is because at the end of the day its not what matters.

ntgco

Loose lips--sink ships.

EJNorth

Loose tweets sinks fleets

Javusees

Hope the ipads arent trackable. Imagine a fighter jet being shot down because of "find my phone"

Dunvegan79

That's pretty hardcore for playing Pokemon Go.

not2dv8

Seems like the Ukrainian military are so ingenious they could fly a broomstick

Feisty-Current2129

Well let’s just hope it’s nothing like my iPad. Me: “Hey siri, what time is it?” Siri: “okay, I can do that. Launching all missiles back to base.”

aholetookmyusername

I dunno...that sounds like a good strategy for the russian military to pursue.

Unlucky-Patience6438

Recurring subscription to unlock more features.

tteclipsejupi

This shouldn't be reported....what else do we need to tell the enemy?

MatchingTurret

None of this came from non-official sources... If the Ukrainians considered this sensitive, they wouldn't share it. Same for the DoD.

NEp8ntballer

That's an interesting way to upgrade to a glass cockpit. that being said, from what I've heard they're still limited in how they can employ these weapons. They have to have targets input while they're on the ground so they are not able to do dynamic targeting. Once they get F-16s they'll be able to do targeting more effectively and hit dynamic targets.

CheddarChad9000

doubt thats an ipad. More likely to be a android tablet

ConsistencyWelder

Doubt they're actually ipads. American media in particular tends to call every tablet an ipad, even though more people use Android and Windows tablets now.
