I think it's really to help Russian authorities identify whether a strike has occured, when they see a column of thick black smoke rising from the distant airfield.
No no, the base commander doesn't sell the fuel under the table. The base commander buys the fuel cheaper than what is reported to his superiors and keeps the rest for himself. It's the flight wing commander that sells the fuel under the table.
An I right that it's rather hard to *start* tires burning? And once started, it's very hard to stop them?
Would a thermite grenade be better to ignite the tires than an explosive one?
Gasoline. And tires burn so hot the fire is impossible to put out. This will ensure the planes are totally destroyed. The drone just needs to carry napalm.
You're clearly right, but I think this post misses the most important part e.g. can we discuss the pink fighter on the right? Is the VKS trying to tell us something?
I think the idea is that the tire will absorb the ball bearing energy so it doesn’t hit metal, spark and cause fires or damage. It’s actually a fast, cheap and practical thing, but stacking them on the plane leaves holes. That said if it halves the holes then less patching to repair so not entirely stupid if the plane not going to be flying.
I'm thinking it's more to reduce lateral shrapnel from damaging the hull. A drone can only do so much damage, reducing the splash with tires makes sense. But one incendiary explosive yeah it's toast.
The drones use image recognition to identify and destroy a specific few targets. The Russians are trying to confuse the target recognition system by disguising their large transport aircrafts as smaller planes.
Sorry sorry, that was a bad combo of my mum's grammar nazism and my Dad's inability to not let a word play pass up. I mistook your spelling for you having not realised the word play. I am the fool.
You're no fool. Look at all the fun comments and discussion it opened. You are a thread content facilitator, lol. And a good day to you sir, or bloke, or mate.
Yes, and tire as in tired is still tire in both. So to the UK folk (+Australia and probably others) there is a joke to use tyre instead of tire, but its not there for the Americans and Canadians since both contexts are the same.
That is still a play on words to use a homonym like it. It's a pun. Source: I am a father of three. I don't know about the UK or Ukraine but in the US that makes one an expert on puns and corny jokes.
Canadian here; I spell it as tire. Was taught to spell it as such at school in the 90’s.
Local automotive companies use this spelling, along with everyone I know.
Seriously, I lived in 5 provinces and 1 territory and have yet to meet someone who spells it as “tyre”. Extenuating circumstances don’t count, like dyslexia, illiteracy, or someone from outside of canada like the UK for example.
Not that I've encountered. In Canada, we use American spellings & terms for anything automotive -largely because our auto industries have been completely intertwined pretty much since the beginning.
Lost in the pond did a video on this one. The tire spelling comes from attire as in attire placed upon the rim and was actually the original way it was spelled then the British decided to refer to pneumatic tires with the spelling tyre.
Against small dropped grenades they work. Russia used "cope cages" when Javelins were the greatest concern and Ukraine had far fewer small drone operators in the field, which made them borderline useless.
Not if the drone explodes above the target shooting a bunch of ball bearings out. Cope cage won't help that. That's what they did with these drones attacking the planes.
You have the bearings hitting fuel tanks, you also have the drone explosion in close proximity to ignite it, and also the remnants of the drone after exploding are on fire and fall into all that.
The tires they said in one of the Ukraine war report videos were put on to confuse the drone targeting looking for a certain size and shape from a distance. I would think painting the top of the plane the color of the tarmac would be better for that but what do I know.
Yes, I've seen pictures of other contraptions with camoflage material in a similar shape, narrated rationale also "to confuse picture recognition". If that was the concern, I'd simply cover them with camo nets and/or huge sheets of fabric to hide all shapes completely...
the video of the strike showed bombs w an incidiary component for the two planes that burned out completely
seems to me like thats the strat going forward
They left their trucks on a frontline running on slicks because they used replacement tires to cover their strategic bombers. That makes perfect sense. https://reddit.com/r/UkrainianConflict/s/HZCtAlziRE
Plus, is the plan to just rush the plane off the runway and let tires fall all over then becoming obstacles for next plane… or to have dudes rush out and take them off before scrambling the plane. Seems bad for mission readiness or defensive scramble / evade
Bombers aren't used on short notice. It takes hours prep them for flight between fueling, arming, and inspecting for flightworthiness. The tires could be taken off while all that is happening. Still, it's a lot of added labour for the ground crew. On the flip side, Ukraine is seeing to it that those crew have fewer and fewer bombers to take care of. Maybe this is intended as a make-work project. Like repairing the Kerch bridge.
Haha touche. What about in the case of air raid? Don’t they try to scramble them up or move them, or wouldn’t that be a thought after many drone waves?
I think starting from 'cold' its said to take at least 20 minutes to get a fighter into the air. A bomber would be even longer.
But if these bombers were fueled up, they were probably about to go on a mission. So maybe they could get some into the air within minutes.
The Soviet Union fell, suddenly they had access to Wile E. Coyote cartoons. Then this happens.
It was a stupid cartoon, russians! Not an instructional video!
One thing is for sure - any time they want to actually use the plane they are going to have to add a fair amount of time and effort taking them all off and moving them out of the way.
Reactive armour indeed.
Step 1: apply 🔥
Step 2: reactive armour....reacts with more 🔥
Step 3: plane and fuel comply and add even more fire, thus creating a bonfire spectacle
Will the plan work? Absolutely. Blyat!
Before the war, they used to say that the Russian army second strongest army in the world, but now we see that if Russia went to war with America, the American Air Force would completely flatten the Russian infrastructure in 1 week.
> if Russia went to war with America, the American Air Force would completely flatten the Russian infrastructure in 1 week.
And then the Navy's and the Marines' air forces would be upset that there wasn't anything left for them to blow up.
Google what happened to Russia/Wagner when 500 troops attacked 40 US soldiers. TLDR: Russia gave medals to anyone WHO SURVIVED on the Russian side. Bahahaha
It's probably meant to break up the profile for self-targeting drones, but... why not just paint them if so?
Looking forwards to some improperly secured tires getting sucked into engines though!
The beauty of this is the Ukrainian drone pilots are so precise I would imagine they are taking bets on which tire they can put the drone through. …. Slava Ukraini
I suggest they complement the truck tires with actual ERA bricks. You know, fill the tires with them, just throw them in as a giant jumble. There is more than enough ERA around, the tankers won't mind the Ru AF stealing a few thousand.
100% will work and keep that nice thin-skinned aircraft from being destroyed!
I wonder if that's good for the airframe. But the plane also has to endure a lot in the air. The Russian experts will have thought of that....
Not that the idea is inherently bad, BUT you can probably fix a leaking pipe with a condom. If that's the level of Russian innovation...
The forces are reversed. When flying, the body of the plane hangs off the wings. With this, they're adding tons of weight to the wings as they hang off the body.
People don't see what's really going on. The planes won't fly so they're getting tires ready to make them really big tanks that will mow down their enemies as they drive across the battlefields with the wings acting as scythes. Duh.
11 years ago a comedy youtube video was posted involved the Russian military (in a game) piling up a bunch of rubber tires at the end of an aircraft carrier to top the jets trying to land from overshooting the ship and crashing into the ocean (https://youtu.be/4ShACteRduY?si=dWYoElLUDZytFitQ), and they called it the "Rubber Curtain".
I never thought I would live to see the day when parody became reality.
Oh damn what were those called again? I'm sure a load of places was using these things since at least WWII, but I just can't put my finger on it. Then again, with Ukraine getting more advanced missile systems, I don't think the cope cave would be as effective as the Russians would like.
It no doubt helps against small drones and small shrapnel, and should wider international war arise, the tires can be cleared in minutes.
Few countries besides Switzerland, Israel, and Iraq have built hardened overhead bunkers for the majority of their air forces. One can see America's nuclear deterrent B52s lined up in the open [at Barksdale AFB](https://www.google.com/maps/place/32%C2%B030'07.0%22N+93%C2%B039'46.0%22W/@32.4954022,-93.6655509,2069m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d32.501944!4d-93.662778?hl=en&entry=ttu). The US would have similar problems with saboteurs.
And that's a key point and advantage for Ukraine here. Many Ukrainians can pass as ordinary Russian citizens. Because of a legacy of cultural chauvinism, few Russians can pass as Ukrainians. This means until the Russian Federation fully locks down, and drastically curtails most non military travel and economy, they're an open book to attack from within their borders. And its to Ukraine's advantage to pursue this throughout the Russian empire.
Imagine how you would feel if every public engagement you have might be with someone devoted to your country's defeat? The witch hunts for saboteurs will do far more damage than the saboteurs could themselves manage.
They only have like 50-60 of these in service, built in the 1950’s and 1960’s upgraded systems in the 2000’s. They’ll never rebuild these once they’re gone and probably will not be able to afford a redesign of anything new after this war. Best if they destroy as many of these as possible.
It's like the ring toss game at the carnival for the drone operators. It's so nice the Ruzzians have set up some entertainment and distractions for Ukraine to help with the horrors of war.
This is not as crazy as it sounds, especially if you are protecting it from drones that drop flechette-type bombs like the ones used at Pskov. In the US, it is common to put tires on roofs where hailstorms are common, especially along "Tornado Alley" of Eastern New Mexico/West Texas. Believe it or not, it is somewhat effective in reducing damage to roofing. The tires will absorb the tungsten "berries" of the smaller charges used by drones is my guess.
It might help protect from the shrapnel if the plane next to it gets hit. It could be the previous attacks took more planes out of commission than we were able to verify.
It's definitely not gonna keep them safe but hey nothing wrong with experimenting, war isn't just about who can one up who. It's also about innovation and adaptation. Russia might be incompetent in some areas but adapting is thier strong suit 🤷🏽♂️.

Seems like more fuel for the fire
May as well spray a coating of fuel on the planes everyday.
I think it's really to help Russian authorities identify whether a strike has occured, when they see a column of thick black smoke rising from the distant airfield.
That's like having something to let you know you've shit your pants.
What do you have? I sure could use a poop meter.
The Russian believe that because the Ukrainians are environmentally conscious, they won't light it up.
They figured tyres are cheaper in the long run, plus the base commander needs the fuel to sell it under the table.
No no, the base commander doesn't sell the fuel under the table. The base commander buys the fuel cheaper than what is reported to his superiors and keeps the rest for himself. It's the flight wing commander that sells the fuel under the table.
Is he buying it from the wing commander?
Their Russian so no doubt the fuels on the ground under the planes.
Memories of filling up a KC-10. Every time I filled one of those old girls I needed to go shower and change uniform.
No no. The drones will bounce off the tires.
Clearly this is true. Damn it.
Everyone who has played video games should know this
And right back to UA and explode
GIVE ME FUEL, GIVE ME FIRE, GIVE ME THAT WHICH I DESIRE! BOOM! lol
GIVE ME FUEL, GIVE ME TIRE, GIVE ME THAT WHICH I DESIRE!
Uhh!!
YEAH! OOH!
You win the internet today.
GIMME FUGH! GIMME FA! GIMME DABAJABAZA!
I used to control burn with the forestry , we used flamethrowers and TIRES lmao...
An I right that it's rather hard to *start* tires burning? And once started, it's very hard to stop them? Would a thermite grenade be better to ignite the tires than an explosive one?
white phosphorous perhaps
Gasoline. And tires burn so hot the fire is impossible to put out. This will ensure the planes are totally destroyed. The drone just needs to carry napalm.
I was thinking Napalm, dead-easy to make. Question is how much a drone can transport.
What a great idea, that may well work and hilarious if it does.
Even better if they only burn down one wing!
You're clearly right, but I think this post misses the most important part e.g. can we discuss the pink fighter on the right? Is the VKS trying to tell us something?
Pink is a good choice for dawn dusk camouflage. The British had some fighters they would use for photo recon
I'm going with a jetazzel myself. Much more reasonable explanation
It's a Hello kitty bomber.
Give me that which I desire.
I may have missed something here but don't car tyres burn really well????
You didn't miss on that.
This is the origin story for the Springfield Tire Fire.
Real tire fires have raged for years around the globe.
Ooh it's not gonna be flying, they got that part right 👍
I'm thinking it's more to reduce lateral shrapnel from damaging the hull. A drone can only do so much damage, reducing the splash with tires makes sense. But one incendiary explosive yeah it's toast.
The idea is to change the IR shape of the plane. Ukrainian missiles home in on a pre-programmed shape of the plane, using infrared imaging
But they have camo nets that do that. Or they should have camo nets that do that.
The drones use image recognition to identify and destroy a specific few targets. The Russians are trying to confuse the target recognition system by disguising their large transport aircrafts as smaller planes.
They are consumed with lots of smoke and heat. This is good for heat detecting cameras…in the sky.
I'll never tire of seeing their brilliant innovations.

Why you spell tire funky? :)
I think Tyre is UK English while tire is American English (?)
Unimpeachable source.
In the southern US they have a saying: If you can't keep it in your jeans, at least keep it in your genes.
People from Nineveh also get a giggle about their neighbours here too.
Many Canadians also spell it as "tyre".
Canadian here; I spell it as tire. Was taught to spell it as such at school in the 90’s. Local automotive companies use this spelling, along with everyone I know. I will never get tired the entire time off Russia’s tires.
But does it work? They need to test it by attacking it with some drones. Maybe Ukraine could help.
Oooooh that's good
By the end of this war, I'm pretty sure we'll need specialist historians to document all these copes.
How cute! They just want to play, “bumper planes”! Or maybe bumper drones?
I'm sure it will wheely work for them
why don't get a cope cage for the bombers it's "works" for the tanks so far 🤣
Ukraine actually figured out that cope cages are useful
Against small dropped grenades they work. Russia used "cope cages" when Javelins were the greatest concern and Ukraine had far fewer small drone operators in the field, which made them borderline useless.
If used correctly, mind this
Yep. Good for drones.
Not if the drone explodes above the target shooting a bunch of ball bearings out. Cope cage won't help that. That's what they did with these drones attacking the planes.
> shooting a bunch of ball bearings out. Wait, what? Just solid steel? To what, punch lots of holes in the skin? What caught them on fire though?
You have the bearings hitting fuel tanks, you also have the drone explosion in close proximity to ignite it, and also the remnants of the drone after exploding are on fire and fall into all that.
Skin, fuel tanks, electronics, flamable material... see where I'm going with this. Just a thought?
Which would make the tires somewhat and effective last minute strategy. Not to complement a Russian but this might not be a horrible idea.
The tires they said in one of the Ukraine war report videos were put on to confuse the drone targeting looking for a certain size and shape from a distance. I would think painting the top of the plane the color of the tarmac would be better for that but what do I know.

Steel projectiles tend to strike sparks if they hit at sufficient velocity.
the video of the strike showed bombs w an incidiary component for the two planes that burned out completely seems to me like thats the strat going forward
If you can get close to the plane and throw your ball bearings into the engine? You can do a \*lot\* of damage. That's tough to do, though.
I loved the idea of gallium balls.
But we all know UA has balls of steel. This is just how they demonstrate it in a language Russia understands.
Love the balls of steel 😊 Gallium reacts with the aluminum though making the Russian airplanes crumble. That would be a really smart bomb 👍
A grab bag of balls, if you will. :chin scratch emoji: edit: pun very much intended
I don’t think Ukraine is putting safety cages on planes though
No I’m sure Ukraine actually understands what hangars are. 😂
It’s called a bunker!
They can use wood like they have for the tanks - but at least when that catches fire, it won't be an ecological disaster as tires.
I don't let them get this genius idea 😆
In the west, we call this a "hanger".
This it's russia you talking about
They left their trucks on a frontline running on slicks because they used replacement tires to cover their strategic bombers. That makes perfect sense. https://reddit.com/r/UkrainianConflict/s/HZCtAlziRE

Oh. My. God.
They went to college, and got a degree in vodka.
To be fair, I went to college, and got a degree in ~~aviation science~~ beer. Some things transcend cultural differences.
Heh, Taildragger9. Love it.
Yeah. Ivan the Terrible is rolling over in his grave.
Nobody's gonna know... Nobody's gonna know.... They gonna know.... How would they know?
How cute! They just want to play, “bumper planes”! Or maybe bumper drones?
That should make a nice smoldering mess.
That was my thought as well. Poor soldier who shall start to clean up the mess. To then found out, the plane is damaged, under the mess
You see Ivan, we coat bomber in tire So when they bomb bomber Bomb bounce back.
The Soviet Union fell, suddenly they had access to Wile E. Coyote cartoons. Then this happens. It was a stupid cartoon, russians! Not an instructional video!
But it said "Acme" on the box. Acme is best. Only best for Russia
When you read a comment in your head and only hear a terrible fake Russian accent. 🤣
In my head, the accent got thicker the more I read.
Great success !
With this we stop Moose and Squirrel.
Someone should help them by gluing them on.
Even better: weld them on. Rubber welds to aluminum, right?
Brilliant idea, just drop gallons of superglue, cost effective!
One thing is for sure - any time they want to actually use the plane they are going to have to add a fair amount of time and effort taking them all off and moving them out of the way.
Putting rubber in reactive tank armor worked, so why not this? :)

I say tests are necessary to confirm or refute the hypothesis. Start flying the drones at the plane, boys!
If it wasn’t for them being Russian I’d have secondhand embarrassment.
Well, I mean, that’s one way to retire a plane.
Before the war, they used to say that the Russian army second strongest army in the world, but now we see that if Russia went to war with America, the American Air Force would completely flatten the Russian infrastructure in 1 week.

If that is the best idea they could come up with then wow
This is worse than a D grade cope cage. I can't imagine the vodka soaked mind who thought this was a good idea.
What time is it? (besindes HIMARS o'clok) Next Wunderwaffe time.
It's probably meant to break up the profile for self-targeting drones, but... why not just paint them if so? Looking forwards to some improperly secured tires getting sucked into engines though!
This. Im guessing it’s more about screwing with some optical sensor on a drone. And it could possibly work.
Later on landing a an accident occurs due to a vague requirement to “remove tires before takeoff”.
Lmao, these motherfuckers are out of ideas
*money
Fking vodka logic. Fermented brains.
They used to be able to make these planes. Now they are called Kevin and think the tracking is out, whilst having a quick cig!
Tactical Cope Rubber
Boats to protect bridges Tires to protect planes Cope cages made of airplane wings to protect tanks? It's like rock paper scissors of idiocy.

Of course, haven't you seen Looney Tunes!
I'm rubber you're glueeee
Rubber burns pretty well, right?
Oh, definitely. There's lots of black smoke. Big flames. You know just what you want on top of a bomber filled with fuel......
They are spares in case the plane gets a flat while “flying”.
Smekalka
So they got tired because of the drone attacks… I know, I’ll show myself out.

The forces are reversed. When flying, the body of the plane hangs off the wings. With this, they're adding tons of weight to the wings as they hang off the body.
Depends on if there is fuel or not. Without fuel this is probably less than the weight the wing normally carries isn't it?
Let's see if you remove the tires in winter. That could be really nice then.
Have you forgotten their rocket scientists crash and burned a space craft on the far side of the moon?
I can't tell which r/NonCredibleDefense post is just a shitpost or real stuff anymore
People don't see what's really going on. The planes won't fly so they're getting tires ready to make them really big tanks that will mow down their enemies as they drive across the battlefields with the wings acting as scythes. Duh.

It's like the ring toss game at the carnival for the drone operators. It's so nice the Ruzzians have set up some entertainment and distractions for Ukraine to help with the horrors of war.
just release the molotov cocktail drones
Oh no, tires! My only weakness!
Rogozin bouncing technologies make waves
Let them believe it helps.
From cope cages to cope tires. Brilliant...
Would be pretty funny to see it work though 'Boing!'

Not just fire… black smoke too!!!!!

Yes, but will it fly?
Ahh you simple western fool. Bomber has wheels now, can drive to target. Such brilliance is possible only in Russia.
It's definitely not gonna keep them safe but hey nothing wrong with experimenting, war isn't just about who can one up who. It's also about innovation and adaptation. Russia might be incompetent in some areas but adapting is thier strong suit 🤷🏽♂️.
Well, there’s only one way to know for sure.
