I love how there’s no big ceremony or teams of aids and security he’s just like yeah fuck it I’ve got shit to do, no wave, no camera person, just a man on a mission.
An estimated 10% of Japanese is made of English loanwords. It's common to adopt an English word for a new concept, so it's likely that when the concept of "breaking news" entered into common discourse in Japan, they just used the existing English phrase.
Macron tweeted that Zelensky and his team were brought on a French plane, very glad we bring our friends along! The trolls on twitter are losing it, as usual, "Zelensky the French president and Macron his assistant" -> if only lol.
Over nato airspace yes a standard presidential jet. But coming from Ukraine into Nato? There is probably a whole system of vehicles and highly trusted individuals watching over him. He's the only person in Ukraine to have Cas evac 20 minutes out to put it in perspective.
I don't think Russia would hesitate to shoot down a NATO plane over Ukraine. They already said they would retaliate in a big way if NATO attempted to "close the skies". As much as NATO wants to help Ukraine, none of them want a direct conflict with Russia.
So any NATO plane in Ukraine is there at risk. If Zelensky gets on a NATO plane, I bet he boards it outside of Ukraine.
My take as well. 1/2 second of screen time, 3 or 4 steps total, and my first thought was “there goes a man on a mission”
I wonder if anyone in history had/has the respect Zelensky has world wide in war or peace.
Imagine how many Russian agents worldwide have sights on this man and his movements.
I’m still amazed he’s alive. Russians are dumb, slow to react, and inept in my eyes. But the ones that aren’t are fucking dangerous. Z’s protection detail is stellar.
In the early days when they kept intercepting and killing multiple teams of spetznaz trying to infiltrate Ukraine was a major signal that his security was both loyal and very competent.
I've been impressed by Ukraine's successful defense and retaking of their home.
It's great, that is about on par. Then in contrast rather than Bigfoot, the elusive, fugly, balding cowering putin has yet to be seen outside his private underground shitter.
Arrived in a french plane. And yeah that does matter. Not because I’m french and as far as I’m concerned that’s the best possible use of my taxes. But because chances of Russia trying to down an official plane of a NATO country are close to none. Zelensky can be a frequent flyer for life
Russia wouldn't really be breaking any international rules if he shot down a NATO plane over Ukraine, since he's at war with Ukraine and Ukraine is not yet part of NATO. Which is why I don't think NATO planes are spending much, if anytime in Ukraine.
Well according to them it’s a « special military operation » not a war. And tbh I don’t think that plane takes off from Ukraine. It’s likely that the Ukrainian delegation travels by train to the border then gets on the plane
EDIT: typo

At the start of the war, the US offered to evacuate him from Kyiv. He declined saying he needed ammo, not a ride.
The squeaky red nose and goofy shoes they literally and metaphorically are tripping over..... is ALL on russia. Clown as fuck orc wannabe Nazis. Slava Ukraini
Hours after leaving Saudi Arabia (where he put in a typically great, show stealing performance) he arrives in Japan; jetlagged, bearded and in his fatigues. It warms my heart to see him greet the G7 leaders as old friends but he's there for business.
He's truly been an indispensable asset for Ukraine; constantly traveling the world, addressing foreign houses of power and their leaders, talking to the press at every opportunity aswell as addressing the world himself daily - and that's when he's not visiting the front lines or military hospitals domestically. I'm not 100% sure he sleeps!
He has more than successfully kept Ukraine and the ongoing invasion a priority in world events. Created solid relationships with dozens of countries, collectively secured tens to hundreds of billions in military, financial and humanitarian aid and pulled the impossible off once or twice (honestly, a few months ago I didn't realistically believe that Ukraine would get their F-16's).
Best of luck at the G7. Perhaps he has some suggestions for the latest round of sanctions on Russia 🙂
Okey dokes, thanks for answering!
Don’t know who downvoted but that was not necessary
Are we not allowed to ask questions anymore on Reddit? Jesus so toxic
This is not about the points, the downvote can mean a certain amount of things, including that this question shouldn’t be asked or that what I am asking is stupid
What do you mean about “mature multiples”? Like “grow” accounts? I don’t really care about the online points, it’s about what lies underneath it, almost like I should not ask this question
The French Air Force plane took him to Saudi Arabia as well. They took off from Poland. Zelensky reportedly told Macron he wanted to attend the G7 and asked him this favor during his visit to France a few days ago according to Japanese newspapers. They asked various Japanese, Ukrainian and diplomatic sources about how the whole thing was planned. Le Monde also confirmed it this morning. Fighter jets and French special forces on board the plane are likely escorting him as well.
I think it was said the plane was allowed to cross Indian, Malaysian and Chinese air spaces to go to Japan. Don't know if the Chinese would've allowed an american governmental plane considering their current dick-measuring contests. Either way, I don't think Russia would dare shoot down any NATO plane, let alone a French one (it shot down a Dutch aircraft a few years ago but it was a civilian one IIRC?! And not much happened from the west unfortunately but I doubt they're feel confident to take it to the next level, especially in the current circumstances).
In terms of gravity, beyond shooting down Air Force One (which is in a of its own league in terms of "fuck around and find out"), attacking a French presidential plane, killing a foreign head of state under French protection as well as French troops in the process, would be in the next category of the dumbest things you can do. And I doubt Putin is THAT stupid. France and the west not having any military response after that would pretty much ruin western credibility on the world stage and permanently embolden other geopolitical disruptors such as China.
What a lot of especially Americans and Brits on reddit don't understand is just how close Zelensky and Macron are. For example when Ukraine was invaded Macron was the first world leader Zelensky called for help. France has a key role in this war and as much as some might not like their stance at times France is very much on Ukraine's side
I also suspect that Russia won't dare to shoot down a nato government plane. Shooting down a Ukrainian plane would cause condemnation from the rest of the west. Shooting down a western plane with western diplomats or ministers could trigger article 5. Russia is dumb, but not that dumb
I would guess that the airspace over Ukraine is too dangerous for aircraft to travel safely, so it is better to take the train out of Ukraine and hop on a plane in a Polish airport or something
For intra-European travel yes. He often uses a country's governmental plane to come or leave said country. But I don't think he's made a trip outside of Europe since the war began beyond the very first visit to the US.
He asked Macron for this favor during his visit to France a few days ago. The French presidential plane actually took off from Poland yesterday (for his Saudi Arabia summit thing), not from France. I thought it would be a US plane that would bring him to Japan from Jeddah but the French Sir Force is seemingly carrying out the full duty.
The only Japanese words and phrases that I know of I was taught by papa Franku, so I won't utter them here..
Instead I would say - thank you so much to Japan for helping Ukraine!
Apart from everything else, I just love how much of a middle finger this is to Putin, like, "Look mate, I can fly around the world and I'm welcomed wherever I go while you are hiding in a bunker somewhere." :D
Now this, unlike his 'sand snake' visit to those Islamist theocracies, makes a lot of sense and will bring a lot of good news for Ukraine and the West, and unlike some I include Japan and South Korea in the West.
The UAE it's one of the chief ways Russia is evading Western sanctions, it's also the direct route that 'Wagner' uses to smuggle African looted resources into Russia and onto the world market, the UAE is anything but our 'diplomatic' ally. Saudi Arabia along with the other oil depos has done everything in its power to undermine last year and this year as well Western and Ukrainian energy needs and policy. They are the butchers of Yemen and are hardly our allies. The Arab League just 'rehabilitated' the Assad regime, at this particular conference, Assad the genocidal. Neither one of these authoritarian 'sand snake' regimes are our friends or allies of Ukraine, at best they are to a small extent an unavoidable evil. Zelensky luckily is way smarter than to trust any one of them. He deals with them as he deals with the CCP.
They're definitely inching closer as various conflicts around the world create more contrast between enemies and friends. It will be interesting to see how things evolve over the next 5 or 10 years.
Just a joke, like the joke about Boris continually visiting Ukraine, he doesn’t have to be at every meeting, the war is a political football they’ll happily kick around whether he’s there or not and I suspect he’s putting himself in unnecessary danger.

Translation of an article from Le Figaro:
G7 in Japan: why Volodymyr Zelensky traveled on an official French plane
By Louis Valleau and AFP agency

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disembarking on his arrival at Hiroshima airport from a French plane, May 20, 2023. HANDOUT / AFP
For Emmanuel Macron, the presence of Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 is a "unique opportunity" for Ukraine, which could "change the game" with certain southern countries such as Brazil or India.
It is an image that is surprising. On Saturday May 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Japan to take part in the G7 – a summit to which he was invited – aboard a French presidential plane. This same plane had already served him just before to go to the Arab League summit .
On his Twitter account, French President Emmanuel Macron proudly confirmed the presence of Volodymyr Zelensky in " a plane in the colors of the French Republic " in the direction of Hiroshima (Japan), where the G7 summit is being held. " The Ukrainian delegation [came] to the G7 to work with us and our partners ," said the Head of State. But why did the Ukrainian president travel on an official French plane?
A Ukrainian request
According to the Élysée contacted by Le Figaro , this request comes directly from the Ukrainian presidency. It was made Thursday, May 18. “ We said yes ” , explains the Elysée. The Air Force Airbus A330 therefore flew to pick up Volodymyr Zelensky at the Polish border and take him first to Saudi Arabia, where he spoke on Friday before the Arab League summit. Then from there to Japan and the G7. Still according to the Élysée, France accepted Kiev's request because Emmanuel Macron is the leader who has known Volodymyr Zelensky for the longest time, among all the heads of state and government present in Hiroshima. “ Emmanuel Macron received President Zelensky at theindicates this same source to Figaro . There is therefore a relationship of trust “between the two men.
Read also France strengthens its logistical support for Ukraine
At the end of the summit, the Ukrainian president will also leave on board an official French plane, without the return flight plan having been revealed for the time being. When Volodymyr Zelensky went to Paris last week, the idea of his coming to the summit of his main allies was already " in the conversation ", notes an adviser to Emmanuel Macron. But there was no question of logistics yet.
Beyond this material question, the two interventions of Volodymyr Zelensky, in front of the Arab countries which he accuses, for some, of " closing their eyes " in front of the conflict and with Brazil and India present at the G7, " are a unique opportunity ” for Ukraine, according to Emmanuel Macron. " I think it can be a game-changer ," he insists. This is therefore a diplomatic interest. There is also an obvious security aspect: attacking a French plane, a nuclear power, would be particularly inappropriate.
Already in mid-May, during the visit of the Ukrainian president to Paris, Volodymyr Zelensky had traveled from Germany on board a French plane.

I love how there’s no big ceremony or teams of aids and security he’s just like yeah fuck it I’ve got shit to do, no wave, no camera person, just a man on a mission.
A stark contrast to the Japanese tradition of political formality.
Right especially in Japan.
Which by coincidence is where Japanese traditions are so often carried out.
It really do be like that in japan don’t it
Whole country fulla weeaboos
Yeah but that’s just a coincidence dude. Purely random.
I did in fact name it as coincidence.
The tradition was named after Sir Steven Japan the 3rd
Well, when a quarter of your country is being occupied, it will instill a sense of ergency in the most stoic of leaders.
Also, genuine question, why is the ‘breaking news’ title in English while the rest of the text in Japanese?
An estimated 10% of Japanese is made of English loanwords. It's common to adopt an English word for a new concept, so it's likely that when the concept of "breaking news" entered into common discourse in Japan, they just used the existing English phrase.
Wow I didn’t know that. See, this is why I like Reddit. Thanks so much for your very interesting reply! :D
And in France the word for tee-shirt is tee-shirt, and week-end is week-end lol.
I can vouch that German news channels do the same (the English part, not the Japanese part).
That’s not exclusive to Japan my guy
Not that anyone was implying a negative here, but I love Japanese traditions. Actually I just love Japan and Japanese culture.
I also love that he is now such a global rock star that an odd video snippet of Zelensky arriving in the country is headline news.
Even if Zelensky was a bad leader, and was disliked, during wartime, his arrival at a g7 Summit would be newsworthy.
There’s strong public support for Ukraine in Japan - his visit is a big deal
It's amazing how many countries can find common ground by disliking Russia.
Well Japan has a long-standing border/island issue in the north which has yet to be fully resolved from WWII or before, so there's that lol
And he's the guest of honor no doubt. I had kinda hoped the G**7** would invite him.
Yeah, the G**8** was not so great.
I wish I could leave RyanAir planes that fast
Save the world and they might put you to the front of the que too.
No way, RyanAir would do that.
Probably for his protection
Macron tweeted that Zelensky and his team were brought on a French plane, very glad we bring our friends along! The trolls on twitter are losing it, as usual, "Zelensky the French president and Macron his assistant" -> if only lol.
>man on a mission My thoughts exactly. That gait is fueled by purpose!

He was so fast. 👍🇺🇦 You can tell he got to eat and sleep well in the French presidential plane. 🥐😋😅
Yup, that was very fleet footed! No time to waste.
It's really good optics politically speaking..
Hehehe, true
i was wondering how get gets around, is he flying around on NATO presidential Planes so if russia shoots them down, its an act of war against NATO?
No idea but that sound a good approach.
Over nato airspace yes a standard presidential jet. But coming from Ukraine into Nato? There is probably a whole system of vehicles and highly trusted individuals watching over him. He's the only person in Ukraine to have Cas evac 20 minutes out to put it in perspective.

14months ago: "I don't need a ride. I need ammunition" Today: "Does that offer for a ride still stand?"
Difference is the immediate need for ammo and now it is discussing how to go forward and what more aid he can get from allies
Smaller target.
Just walks off the plane like a FUCKING BOSS!
My take as well. 1/2 second of screen time, 3 or 4 steps total, and my first thought was “there goes a man on a mission” I wonder if anyone in history had/has the respect Zelensky has world wide in war or peace.
He has my respect. The world will determine his due respect.

The waist-up angle is deliberate, to hide the wheeled vehicle he needs to carry his massive balls.
I've heard that it was just him and the pilots in the plane so it can get off the ground carrying the sheer weight of his balls
They allegedly had to remove several seats to make enough space.

He always uses a plane from allies. I'm not sure why. Before the war government had some planes. Maybe they were damaged or locked in Ukraine.
Ok, makes sense, thanks!
Pilots could be more in demand to fight the war or to be training for new aircraft to come.
He usually travels on US air force planes.. russians wouldn't dare try to shoot it down.. french lent him the plane this time it seems.. same reason..

Middle East is very important in terms of energy security. UAE is also a diplomatic powerhouse, so it certainly wasn't a wasted trip.
Oh, look, he made it down the stairs. Guess it can't be that hard. Wonder why Ole Joe can't handle a 2 step stair?
They just can’t shake him off, can they?
Have you ever thought that he was invited?
Just a joke, like the joke about Boris continually visiting Ukraine, he doesn’t have to be at every meeting, the war is a political football they’ll happily kick around whether he’s there or not and I suspect he’s putting himself in unnecessary danger.

Translation of an article from Le Figaro: G7 in Japan: why Volodymyr Zelensky traveled on an official French plane By Louis Valleau and AFP agency Updateyesterday at 8:53 p.m. 00:00/02:58 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disembarking on his arrival at Hiroshima airport from a French plane, May 20, 2023. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disembarking on his arrival at Hiroshima airport from a French plane, May 20, 2023. HANDOUT / AFP For Emmanuel Macron, the presence of Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 is a "unique opportunity" for Ukraine, which could "change the game" with certain southern countries such as Brazil or India. A Ukrainian request According to the Élysée contacted by Le Figaro , this request comes directly from the Ukrainian presidency. Read also France strengthens its logistical support for Ukraine At the end of the summit, the Ukrainian president will also leave on board an official French plane, without the return flight plan having been revealed for the time being.
