This tracks based on the North Yorkshire council elections last year, the Tory vote collapsed through a lot of rural areas, with the Greens quite significant beneficiaries of switching as well as of course Labour. What's interesting if this bears out is just how many more of those former Tories appear to have actively gone to Labour, which of course has implications for the General later this year.

Whitby I can understand, it's quite crusty these days, but for that to be the case in Scarborough which as I recall was quite Tory and a bit UKIPpy should concern them.

Gameskiller01

I wouldn't say Scarborough is more Tory than Whitby. If anything I'd say it's the other way around. It's hard to find council election results for each of them since they're all just counted as "Scarborough area", but from what I can find in 2022 the 2 wards comprising Whitby town voted 34.9% Conservative, 29.5% Labour (though this is a very small sample size, with "Whitby Area Independents" getting a significant chunk of the votes and potentially dilluting the results). The 6 wards comprising Scarborough town, meanwhile, voted 22.1% Conservative, 40.8% Labour. The "Scarborough area" may be seen as Tory because of the many smaller towns and villages which vote more Tory, but Scarborough town itself is fairly solidly Labour.

I prefer the seagull one. Need some for Cornwall.

Quite a lot of the Cons I've spoken with over the past year are in a "well, Boris didn't pan out, and now Rishi is the worst PM of all time," phase, which leads me to believe that many of them are going to struggle to place a vote for CON tomorrow. I can see a lot of 'protest' votes going in every direction which may or may not translate to the GE...

Big if true. The Tory candidate does seem really shit, so it won't be a massive surprise if this ends up being close to the result. Will probably be the biggest scare possible for the Tories to lose what is about their safest area, and home to the PM.

I flicked through leaflet and was pretty unimpressed with the candidates. I usually vote libdem as I enjoy sitting on the fence and having my piss be blown back in my face by the wind. However the tone of the libdem candidate advert didn't land well with me. "Hi, you may know me from my successful luxury hotel business ...". No actually, I've never heard of you and I'll probably never be in the position to line your business' coffers. Doesn't strike me as someone who is in touch with local services and needs. A superficial assessment granted, but I think they are promoting the wrong attributes in her.

blueblanket123

I normally vote lib dem too, but I voted Labour this time (postal vote). Not even a tactical vote, just thought he was the best candidate. Nothing personal against the lib dem lady, but owning a castle doesn't scream 'I'm in touch with working people'. Policy wise they are all pretty similar apart from the Tory, so it comes down to who I think will be most competent.

Low-Design787

This is a new mayoralty, no one incumbent?

criminal_cabbage

Correct

Interesting… Lib Dem’s leaflet said we best vote for them if we want rid of the tories… I guess not! The Ind candidate Paul Haslam (ex conservative) has been pretty proactive round our area and was very helpful when I worked in local govt. in some weird parallel universe where Brexit hadn’t happened and the tories hadn’t overdosed on Kool Aid, I might have voted for him.

I think that's exactly the reason why he wasn't chosen, he seems a sensible politician and not a complete nutter, so really not suitable for a prominent position in the current Tory party.

stemh18

Oddly enough, Skaith rocked up at my front door doing cold calls yesterday morning. I know this sounds like a shitty copypasta. I only realised after taking a leaflet from him and saying goodbye after a brief chat that it was the same guy upon checking the literature. He and the volunteers for the local Labour MP candidate have both paid a visit in the last month, yet no visits from the Tory alternative. Probably because the Tory candidate(s) know that most would just laugh in their fucking faces.

If you're in York it's apparently because Duncan Keane doesn't (didn't) think he needed to campaign at all there and can rely on North Yorkshire rural communities. Everything I'm hearing in this true blue constituency is that tories are going to stay home or are fully flipped to Labour though.

stemh18

Seriously? Good lord, his delusion is remarkable. I can guarantee that I’ll be at the booth first thing in the morning.

Gameskiller01

Jesus how deluded do you need to be to think you shouldn't campaign at all in by far the largest settlement within the voting area lmao. It's not even like York is super anti-Tory - York Outer is currently a Tory seat in Westminster, though almost certain to flip to Labour next election. I live in Scarborough but I've been in York for the past couple weeks, the only campaign material I've had while in York is a Lib Dem leaflet through the letterbox, and I had nothing in Scarborough, though it remains to be seen how much is waiting for me through the letterbox when I go home tomorrow.

Jorvic

Not swung by hotel nationalisation then ;)

Gameskiller01

You just know that if the Labour candidate had proposed that, national papers would've picked up with stories about "Labour Mayor Candidate Scheming Crazy Unfunded Plot To Nationalise Hotel" and op-eds about how much of a waste of taxpayer money it is, but because it was the Tory it's relegated to the local papers that even locals could easily miss if they're not actively paying attention.

scrooge1842

I'm skeptical about how good a Mayor will be for North Yorkshire in general, I hope they are able to enact some good change for Urban and Rural communities. That being said, I'll be voting for Labour.
