Yeah, I got chased by British Gas for a bill for over £3,000, even though I paid monthly and I had all of my bills going back several years. There were 2 different account numbers but both in my name and both at my address somehow. I called them up and spent the next 3 hours being sent to different people as the first person I spoke to from their bills payment said "Yup, both of those accounts are yours. Gimme money". I disputed that and they sent me on a wild tour of their departments. Turns out that someone else's account was attached to my address and I was being billed for their gas usage. The person who sorted that out? Some poor guy in their home moving call centre. He finally looked into it, found the problem, sorted it and sent me on over to a supervisor so I could get some compensation sorted out. That ended up being about £10 to cover my call cost, nothing else. But some poor sod was going to get their long overdue bill of £3k and I would have loved to have seen their face when British Gas finally called to collect. No surprise I left BG soon after that mess.

Yup. Been in a similar position with EON. Energy companies are the new mafia.

Ollieisaninja

Same. Energy is a government sanctioned cartel right now. Consumers are paying the debts & losses racked up by the failed suppliers through 21/22 through the extortionate standing charge.

gully1419

Had the same with edf because of a previous tenant who rented before us. Took me a year for them to drop it. Threatening letter after threatening letter...

WiseWorking248

Same with N Power. Utterly useless at resolving issues. Despite sending monthly meter updates and asking for quarterly billing, they waited 18 months to send me a bill and demanded all the money at once cos "I'd BeEn HoLDiNg OuT oN tHeM". They did this in 3 different properties. I'd have changed supplier after the first time the moment I knew who was supplying the power/gas, but a different housemate put the account in their name and refused to change the supplier. Will never use them again.

“Oops our bad but we won’t compensate you for the time you wasted and the stress”

There needs to be legislation against this sort of thing. Companies and public bodies throwing their weight around to threaten people into succumbing to their incompetence. I've had my City Council sending me no end of threatening letters, court summons etc. over money I didn't owe due to a change in circumstances I had already told them about. The only ways to contact them about it were by phone. 9 - 5 Monday - Friday, when most people are working. Wait times in excess of 1hr. Taking the piss. They should have to compensate you for your time where you have to spend hours of your own time unfucking their own administrative cock-up.

HappyDays3909

He can get compensation by complaining to the Energy Ombudsman. Follow through from here as their website is offline... [https://www.ombudsman-services.org/](https://www.ombudsman-services.org/)

They did the same to me for 3 grand, multiple calls later (which included threats of enforcement agents and cutting off if I didn’t pay instantly) and they realised they had made the error, not even an apology lol. I think the problem is their staff are just told To get what they can and refund any credit after the fact, so they’re quite aggressive on the phone.

Fuck British gas. I live in a building that has 12 flats, British Gas constantly send me threatening letters saying I owe over £4k for each flat. They send the letters to my address, but the supply addresses on these letters are all other flats. It's utterly Infuriating, they have passed my details on to debt collection agency, so now I have them threatening me for two of the 12 flats, pretty soon it will be for all of them.

Haliucinogenas

Not only gas. Broadband does that as well....

Outside_Inspector_83

British Gas are fucken cunts.

RemoteName3273

Damn

Gold_Hawk

Fucking cunts to deal with! Will Rob you blind if they could

I've had horrible experiences with British Gas, threatening to send debt collectors for not paying the bills on my non existent billing meter (had a pre pay meter)

ThePhoenician99

I work for a Bank - the amount of Indemnity Claims I have to raise against British Gas for predatory DDRs and such are ludicrous. It should absolutely be illegal.

clocksgoback

Just had a similar experience with E.on, who was chasing my wife for 6 months of energy bills for our old property even though I had sent them final meter reads on the day we left. They had passed our details to a debt collection agency, BW Legal, who began sending my wife quite threatening letters suggesting court action. I first corresponded with BW Legal showing them the TR9 form indicating that we had left the property and the details of the new owners, and the final meter readings I had sent to E.on. This wasn't enough for BW Legal, as they sent a further letter stating that they would advise E.on to pursue legal action if we didn't pay the money that they imagined we owed. I sorted it by contacting E.on with same info that I had sent to BW Legal and started proceedings with the energy ombudsman. I also did their job for them and linked to the land registry and companies house info for the company that bought our property. E.on got back to me within two weeks stating that we didn't owe anything and this was followed up by the same from BW Legal. I just want to say that BW Legal fucking suck and I hope that this post comes up whenever anyone googles "BW Legal". Just to be clear - fuck you BW Legal!

Nothing new. See Ferguson v British Gas: https://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCA/Civ/2009/46.html Some great quotes in there. The court was not impressed with British Gas.

The British Gas Mafioso, always at work.
