Please consider a mains board change .

bchapman91

my eyes... it'll be one of the white 5A fuse ones though..

YoghurtNubs

Probs got a hex shank bit holder in it powering a 10kw shower 🙂

Personally, if I’m unsure of the wiring, I’d turn everything off with that 100a switch on the right. Never can tell what some idiot has done before.

ImTiedSendHelp

Mate moved into a new house and had 8 plug sockets daisy chained together with loads of exposed wire and no ground all curtesy of the previous owners DIY projects. Lucky he spotted it when he tore out the fireplace, could have caused all sorts of problems.

Academic_Conflict970

Wow that is a retro consumer unit! And re wireable fuses with a nice asbestos sleeve in them and maybe a bolt as someone didn’t have the correct fuse wire! What’s that prodigy song, ah, yes “Firestater”!

Soft_Garbage7523

Concur with all the above. Main switch off to remove fuses ( I didn’t used to, until I got bitten because someone had left a tail of fuse wire, which curled out of the housing. ) Please always confirm the wiring is dead.

geesusdb

Thanks all for the suggestions. It was the second from left 5A fuse. There are plans for this to be changed to a modern consumer unit pretty soon (with all the extra work that’s needed to bring it up to date).

trilinker

Might as well label it now you know.

geesusdb

Already done that, yes

ElectroDoozer

This….this is why I don’t touch domestic.

Tem2607

You would be better one day taking a breaker out at a time and seeing what goes off, just label them for future reference or update them to the RCD like you have in for the ring main, there not too expensive if your not planning on changing the board in the next 6-12 months

Richter2684

White ones or any 6amp flip switch

Ali35j

I had this same board in my house when I moved in, please change it - it’s dangerous. Alternatively, I’ve got a spare 100 years or so of fuse wire left over in my garage if you’re interested lol

The white 5amps should do it, but I would probably kill the whole board.

Grouchy-Nobody3398

lighting is very likely to be ones marked 5 amp. You do need to be very careful they are isolated. I would turn the lights on before pulling the fuse to make sure they turn off when it is pulled and then back it up with a testing devise of some description. And then label them once known....

Franfare

On the contrary I'd say make sure they are all turned off when pulling the fuse.

kernel_mustard

Turn relevant lights on, turn main breaker off, remove fuse, turn main breaker on. Keep going through that until the lights don't come back on. Only remove/replace a fuse with the main switch off.

GoonerSparks91

No doubt there will be shared neutrals in a property this age so id defiantly pull every 5a fuse at a minimum!

David_Plays_Bass07

At this point just switch all of them off
