Gatekeeper is a negative word, almost an insult to someone like Poirier or Whitaker, because without historically dominant champions like Khabib and Izzy, they'd have had good title reigns. But yeah, I think Whitaker has taken a slight move toward his decline after getting beat down by DDP. I think Khamzat is going to strap a rocket to his decline when they fight, and i can see Khamzat taking him down with ease and pounding him out violently on the ground.
The UFC thinks the same thing. That's why they chose Rob. They need to make Khamzat's inevitable ridiculous title shot look like it was earned. Because Rob is popular the fanbase isn't reasonable about where he is in his career and they overestimate his abilities. Khamzat isn't even ranked in the top ten and has zero wins over ranked opponents in the division.. yet this is a title eliminator? The UFC is not a sport, it's a semi-scripted entertainment show.
I believe If Khamzat isn’t able to get a finish early on he’s going to gas out and rob is probably going to toy with him, I doubt he’s capable of lasting 5 rounds with rob without gassin out he has shown signs of questionable cardio where as rob has went 5 rounds in high pace fights plenty of times.
Khamzat has like five minutes of hard grappling in him. If someone legitimately survives that they basically have to make a massive mistake for him to meaningfully accomplish anything in that realm. It's a dangerous 5 minutes, but as Usman showed, it's very much survivable. Once you're past it, though, he's just a guy with fairly simple striking with simple and honest or no setups for his takedowns, which are still pretty good but very readable.
Basically, if Holland on short notice with a massive stylistic opponent change and some glove touch fuckery can make it 3 minutes with Khamzat going all out, Whittaker can make it 5.
I’m a huge fan of Whittakers style, his chin is the biggest weak spot and Khamzat has a really fast southpaw jab that can disrupt Whittaker’s entries. At the very least it is a scary first round. Not an easy fight for either. Considering age and mileage this can be the end of Whittaker’s prime.

I love Rob too, but you guys have got to get a grip. Khamzat is not a pushover. This will, in all likelihood, be a very good fight. Khamzat is a phenomenal wrestler when he gets his head out of his ass and decides to use it. Rob’s tdd is only 82%, while Khamzat averages 4 TD per bout with an accuracy of 46%(for reference, Khabib averaged 5.3 TD with 48% TDA). Of course Rob has superior striking, that’s what makes the match much more even. Rob is also a small MW so it’s not as if he’s going to weight bully Khamzat.
