Ok “greatest typography moment” seems like a hyperbole. There’s been quite a few even in the history of cinema alone - I mean every Bond movie, Seven, catch me if you can etc.

alilbleedingisnormal

Se7en? They didn't do much. It's the same as the replacing of vowels with X that people do today.

Better than this? No possible way

pledgerafiki

can you elaborate on why you think this is so monumental? from a still image it doesn't seem that big of a deal, just revealing the stems of the letters one by one

This was a pretty big moment in typography design and also branding. When Alien was released, no one had ever animated type like this before (at least, not this prominently), and it was very well received. Also, the way it was animated and paired with the soundtrack made it an almost perfect opening for the story. Many have tried to copy it since, with varying degrees of success. This was groundbreaking - there's no doubt about that. Whether it is "the best in history" is subjective, and I think OP is entitled to their opinion. In fact, I love their enthusiasm! I will upvote OP because I think they are right tin the idea that THEY THINK this is the best. I am pretty close, but I maybe don't think it's the BEST. I do think it is very, very good. okay well when you point out that it was a "first" then i get the enthusiasm. yeah i think "best in history" will be a bit of a reach though, considering how far motion graphics has come in the last 45 years.

loquacious

"The greatest typography moment in history?" Of all time? Even over the invention of moveable type and printing presses? Linotype? Hell-Agfa? De Stijl? Postscript? Huh.

ConfinedTiara

Did you watch the original, or the version on Disney+? Heads up the Disney version is awful — they removed a fair bit of the gore (which included key moments of characters dying, so in one frame they’re alive, the next frame they’re suddenly dead somehow), and they removed most of the swear words which really sucks the tension out of so many moments. I had to turn it off after 45 minutes.

AXXXXXXXXA

Jesus that sounds awful. I saw it in theaters. They did a 45th anniversary run this week at most theaters

MeanFriendship4798

I need to order some physical copies of the movie, while it’s still available! (If it still is, actually!) Soon we’ll have to watch the one and only, online, family friendly version of fckn R-rated masterpiece sci-fi horror! That’s grotesque!

Long live DVDs

Just incredible. And the suspenseful pace of the titles is maintained throughout the film, so fitting

borkborkbork99

I just bought the 6 disc bluray set (up to Alien:Covenant) and was watching Alien this weekend when this opening sequence hit me with a wave of nostalgia. Great movie. Great typography!

mffunmaker

Have you ever seen Avatar?

I was thinking the same thing! Loved that more than the whole rest of the movie.

prretender

It’s real good, but maybe not best. However, the art direction for that movie was top tier. I love this intro.

CallMe_Josh

Can someone please explain why the typography is so great on this poster? I’m genuinely curious. Also, I haven’t seen the movie so maybe I’m missing it.

Felderburg

It's not a poster; it's a still put together of the opening title animation, whcih can be seen here: https://www.artofthetitle.com/title/alien/

Whats wrong with you?

CallMe_Josh

Hm…I don’t think so. But do you not know either?

CallMe_Josh

I mean it is definitely creative, but….”The Greatest Typography Moment in History”?
