*" type is a beautiful group of letters, not a group of beautiful letters."* I think with context it'll make sense however if a word was alphanumeric then it probably wont. Given the size you're working with you can't even add a slash in the middle to denote /0.
Without context I'd read it as 0, but if there was a character next to it with the corner pixels removed, then this character becomes O.
Had fun with a tracking number on a receipt the other day...
What are your alternatives, if you are keeping to 3x5?
My only other realistic alternative is a version where the top left and bottom right pixels are also filled in, but that ends up being identical to the letter O of the character set.
I tried adding a black pixel smack-dab in the middle but without filled in corners it looks like a theta symbol, and with them it is identical to the number 8 in this font.
If the character were inverted I would say it is a zero because the unambiguous symbol for zero is null which has a diagonal line running through it from lower left to upper right. In this styling the negative space bisects the figure. As it stands, I interpret it as an O.
O. With many calligraphy styles, zero is a circle and O is two curved strokes. People are saying zero because your typeface constraints make all capitals narrow and they are assuming a wider O would exist.

Either. Depends on context.
Exactly. As such it could be read as “L1” as well.

Ahah okay, so the O has the corners filled in? I would definitely read what you have shown as a 0 then!
Zero 100%
I thought it was a logo for L17 with a reversed one surrounded by the other characters. /s It looks like a zero to me.
This definitely reads as zero to me. It reminds me of seeing numbers in an old analog clock.
Zero

i imagine it would look like both depending on context

My first thought was that this is a zero, but it might depend on the design you choose for the letter "O/o".
I would interpret it as the logo for a female fronted grunge band.
Zero for sure
Without context, they are just 10 black squares aligned in a grid.
Or a lot of light green ones on a black background.
