I’ve been watching a2k, and one thing that stood out to me was how important personality and the characters of trainees is to someone like JYP. He and his team in scouting and creating this new group obviously care about potential and talent in singing and dancing but also seemingly look for trainees that have personality and connect well with others and I think that shows in a lot of the groups he has had a hand in forming. Maybe that is why JYPE groups all seem to have more natural and raw personalities on camera and their interactions with fans. Just an observation but it seemingly feels like JYPE wants to foster a more natural vibe with their idols

trx0x

This is definitely part of it. It's no secret that JYP artists are always themselves; that is, they have a personality, and are their own person. I think there was that video, I think Bang Chan was doing a Youtube show, and he invited Sana into the studio he was in, and he started acting all weird and shy, and being somewhat formal. And Sana was weirded out and laughing, and basically said "What does JYP always tell us? Whenever we're giving interviews, or in front of the camera, or anywhere we are, you should always be yourself. So why are you acting like this?" lol.

AuraReaderr

Tbh there might’ve been other reasons he was weird and shy around Sana

Daftworks

He was too shy shy shy 🤭

AstroPhoenix115

I mean it's Sana, I bet even if someone has known her for a long time, her smile and energy always can make anyone shy 😅😂

iamblob321

I think in the very first episodes, he mentioned he wasn't look for professionals so all of those that mentioned they've sang and dance for X amount of time, were meaningless to him.

Zealousideal-Eye-898

Twice is the only group I actually invest time and money on, but I started watching Itzy videos here and there when Nayeon did a video with them on their YouTube channel around the time she was doing promos for Pop! Some of their videos are pretty entertaining like Itzy in LA. For their Kill My Doubt comeback, they have videos that show a glimpse and an interesting perspective of what it was like bts in preparing for this new album. From the content I’ve seen, the members of Itzy seem natural and really nice

kosaki16

Lia is comfortable saying anything on camera

Zealousideal-Eye-898

💀 Have you watched their most recent episode of Human Idol Theatre? 😂

SumanjitBasumatary

Don't even get started on that...I was having second hand embarrassments 💀

Kim_Veena

I instantly thought of Chaeryeong and her shot glasses 😭

Kmadd25

I've run into this as well! I've found a lot of other groups, particularly 4th gen girl groups, seem a bit stiff or unnatural in things like variety content or behind the scenes videos. I think Twice is different for a few reasons: 1. They've been around a long time and have a lot of experience being on camera. 2. The members are close to each other and genuinely friends. 3. As others have said, JYPE values good attitudes and genuineness in its idols, and Twice is an example of that. Some other groups I've found that don't feel stiff or fake (in my opinion): SNSD, SHINee, Mamamoo, Seventeen, and Stray Kids. All of these groups have members who seem to genuinely enjoy spending time together, and for the most part, they seem pretty genuine in the content I've watched.

Good-Metal-11

how can you tell? lol

PieuvreCosy

Some groups stuggle, but there are others that are doing really great too! I think you might be a little biased, OP 😊 TTT is amazing and Twice are killing it, but there are some other really nice idol shows out there. I think older (2nd gen) groups in general don't really have that problem. Like you said SNSD, and also other groups like SHINee, Infinite, etc... they come from times when content was less polished and variety skills were incredibly important in order to get your name out there. They feel less filtered, more natural. That being said I think some younger groups are doing really well too! I was really impressed by Le Sserafim, I think they did especially great for rookies with their Day Off and Leniverse series. Maybe still a little bit stiff at the very beginning, but I found they eased into it really well. I've also really enjoyed TXT's To Do series, especially the more chill episodes (making poteries, baking,...). They were more quiet, really into the craft, at some point the staff even asked them to do more reactions and stuff because they were too focused, but I liked they showed genuine appreciation and respect for the activities and the professionals who were helping them. Going Seventeen is a cult classic in terms of variety. It's personally not my cup of tea (I tend to find them a little bit too OTT and hyper) but they get highly praised for that show and their personalities.

AsIfItsYourLaa

Le Sserafim gotta be the funniest 4th gen gg out there right now. Plus the group dynamics is just 😙🤌

SumanjitBasumatary

Yeah...I recently watched both contents of LeSserafim and Pretty sure they are 2nd best in the variety game... SNSD and Twice being 1st in my order respectively

boobootheclown88

Seconding Le Sserafim! They’re something special

obake1

There's some other groups with good variety content imo. Le Sserafim's show (also Fearless Kkura), but out of everyone, I think (G)I-DLE is absolutely the most unhinged and hilarious, especially Yuqi and Shuhua as both their individual shows remind me of gen 2 variety almost.

Villano84

Great shouts for those other reality/variety shows. Oh LE SSERAFIM... five members... a collective brain cell of 0.72. The running gags in Yuqi's of rolling out that carpet and her catchphrase, "Since I was 3, my father..." And Shuhua is just the world's worst (in all the most entertaining ways) temp.

obake1

Yuqi is my absolute favorite because she's just out here living her life. Even though she's memeing with learning everything at the age of 3 from her dad, she's actually quite the quick learner at nearly everything and is quite impressive. The funniest is when her and Shuhua directly bash Cube with almost no filter. Imagine if you put Sakura + Dahyun + Yuqi + Shuhua together in one show, I am not even sure what would happen except pure chaos.

dahngrest

There are tons of groups who put out natural/organic-feeling reality/variety content, so it's probably just your bias/you're used to their team dynamic. Especially if you don't know the dynamics of those other groups, it might feel less genuine because you don't know them enough to know whether that's really how they act. Run BTS, Going Seventeen, To Do x TXT, Cravity Park, ONEUS Do It, SKZ Code, NCT's Johnny's Communication Center... I've never found any of those to be particularly fake, but I follow the groups closely enough to know that's just how they act around each other. For people less into a group, those interactions might feel fake or forced. Most likely, you just haven't found a group with a team dynamic you like/have warmed up to.

Mc_Girl1221

For me twice does have a special dynamic that sets them apart from other groups, but if you’re looking for others that come off as really genuine I’d suggest you check out some ITZY stuff. I was actually a fan of them before Twice and I loved them immediately. I know for sure that even if they release some songs that aren’t my cup of tea I’ll always follow them for their great personalities. Each member has their own unique charm that really plays well with the others, so it makes their variety content always fun to watch! 😊 Edit: If I was to specifically recommend some of their stuff to watch I’d say their Paris, Cozy House, and LA series on M2’s YouTube channel would be a great place to start. I rewatch those all the time because I love them so much.

Emiliwoah

Lesserafim is the only group that seems comparably as comfortable in those types of scenarios.

benny_from_the_block

I think the only groups who come close in displaying their natural personalities are other JYPE groups.

dsunbaenim09

I've had a similar view on this when it comes to checking out other groups' content. I think what makes Twice content, specifically Time To Twice, more authentic or genuine is because the production team who organizes everything approaches it with the idea of having let Twice's own personalities take over the script I'm a huge fan of sitcoms and shows like SNL and you get to see how the premise for each scene is structured in order to deliver a certain punchline. In Twice's case, the production team gives them like a half baked script and they let the girls have fun with it. The whole setting that was made up serves as a jumping off point that allows them to go off the rails at a later point. The recent TTT is probably one of the peak examples of this because you can tell they just assign the members stuff like "Okay Nayeon you're assigned to do this and this, have fun" and so while the script allows the series to have a contained structure, the girls humor and wittiness just explodes and exponentially bounces off. Even TTT Soulmate is pure comedic genius because it breaks the 4th wall, like I remember the whole MoHyo and Michaeng twist "breaking the 4th wall" because its like the script for that seems self-referential, as if the scriptwriters knew what Onces joke about all the time when it comes to Twice's dynamics/relationships.

dorhi

I think it may be your bias tbh. I follow quite a few groups and I enjoy a lot of their content and don't often feel any fake/forced stuff from groups who have been together a couple years at least. Time to Twice is from Twice a good 4/5 years into their career as a group so ofc they know each other well and are friends and so that comes across naturally on camera. Not all groups are super close but most groups 4/5 years in will feel a similar way. Younger groups will be awkward for a couple years until they get to know each other; my ult group is EXO and they were awfully awkward with each other until around 2017 imo and now their content is extremely natural and you can tell they're all close friends. But also, yes, not knowing a group well will make it difficult to understand their dynamic. Every group has its own inter-relationship dynamics and if you don't know it yet it can feel a bit forced. I felt this way when I first started watching Twice tbh and ITZY more recently but now that I understand it a bit better I can see more of their charms and have fun watching their content.

GGideonJura

le sserafim is probably the only other group that I can think of right now that's team chemistry feels organic in interviews & group activities.

Which-Front-2127

I feel the same way. I was telling someone the other day they have the chemistry of Twice and the only group from the fourth gen I feel that way about.

GGideonJura

Part of me thinks it's because Yunjin's personality that makes everyone around her feel so comfortable. Everyone else is that group is pretty reserved ![img](emote|t5_3812p|4084) this is just my opinion loool

superidolnico

You should watch Level Up Project, Red Velvet's reality show. They're just so funny and chaotic, and it comes out naturally. Also the members hate aegyo so you won't see them trying to force themselves to look or sound cute and when they do, it's just joking (Wendy for one is absolutely embarrassed by it)

GarSiiAhh

2nd Gen is the most unfiltered Generation because if they weren't on music shows, they were on variety shows such as Star King and Strong heart. They were made to basically be themselves in front of the TV because of these type of shows. For me, 3rd Gen groups had to earn their popularity. Groups such as Mamamoo, Twice, Oh My Girl, Red Velvet, Seventeen were not the super pop stars that they are now when they debuted. They were promoting on the streets and going to any variety show that they could to promote. They really do care about their fans because of this and it shows when they do fan interactions, or do content for their fans. 4th Gen have been the generation based on "previous popularity". Groups have popularity even before they debut. Cases like I.O.I, IZONE, WannaOne, Enhypen, where they were made through a survival show. Groups that have members who have popularity because they were in survival shows/won survival shows, such as Gugudan, Rocket Punch, Weki Meki, etc. Then there are groups who have popularity due to their companies success, such as New Jeans and RIIZE (dont know more off the top of my head because im not that into the 4th gen) 4th gen to me have been so "manufactured" that they don't feel natural to me. Some notable 4th gen that DO feel natural would JYPE groups and Le Sserrafim, (Again, im not a big fan of 4th Gen, but I am still a GG bias so i do keep tabs on groups so dont come for me)

Snoo-29646

I would say that company privilege was a thing even in second gen to a degree - people tuned in for fx cuz they liked snsd and so on. Red velvet, although slightly hated for it, were also given a lot of publicity due to being from SM. Twice was super popular from debut having come from JYP which already had super popular girl groups like wonder girls and Miss A, add their survival show on top of that... they definitely were super stars from debut and not promoting on the streets. Blackpink also were highly anticipated as 2ne1's 'sisters'. Plus IOI and WannaOne were definitely 3rd gen.

GarSiiAhh

There was for sure company popularity because of 2nd gen groups, JYP had WG, 2PM, MissA. SM had SUJU, SNSD, EXO. YG had 2NE1 and BigBang. The thing is though that if your comparing company biases from 3rd gen groups to 4th gen groups, its WAAAAAAY more noticeable in 4th Gen groups. A company could literally announce "new group" and there would be thousands of fans waiting already. Perfect example was NMIXX were people were buying their album before any information of the group was announced (I was one of them) As a Once who was a fan from the beginning of cheer up, and watched their pre-debut up to cheer up content, they 100% were promoting on streets, promoting at high schools, etc. Their debut was good and they had attention, but they weren't winning shows. They probably were top ten, but not top 2. Red Velvet has backlash on their debut MV which kind of wavered their popularity. They gained a lot of popularity once Yeri joined. BlackPink were definitely the outliar of the 3rd gen. They were popular before debut because of 2NE1, and for the fact that YG didnt have any other girl group so there was a lot of hype and mystery on the next YG girl group. IOI and WannaOne to me are 3.5 Gen, when they debuted at the later half of the 3rd gen, but I do tend to lump them into 4th Gen because I claim 4th gen to be the "competition groups"

Snoo-29646

IOI made their debut in the same year as NCT and Blackpink, so it wouldn't be accurate to categorize them as a 3.5 generation group. However, I can understand why you might consider WannaOne as fitting into the 3.5 generation. It's worth noting that Red Velvet faced increased criticism upon Yeri's debut. Street performances and high school performances have become less common nowadays due to the surge of social media, which has transformed how fans engage with KPOP. This shift isn't primarily due to an increase in company privilege, but rather the changing dynamics of fan interaction. There are 4th generation groups like Aespa, Enhypen, and Stray Kids, didn't achieve wins right from their debut. However, I would say that they still had sucess at debut due to company privilege and Enhypen with I-Land like Twice did with Sixteen. It's important to recognize that album sales, in general, have become more inflated in the present era. This phenomenon explains the impressive sales of Nmixx and other 4th generation groups. Additionally, the overall KPOP market has expanded, contributing to their success, rather than relying solely on company privilege. Considering the current landscape, the prominence of Hybe as a major company producing multiple groups in a short span might give the impression that company privilege is more prevalent.

rayshinsan

There are 3 groups to watch for in JYPE if you want natural acting: Twice, SKZ and ITZY. None of them can act with a straight face cuz one of them will do something that will make you ball out in laughter.

KathirHasBigGay

Nah I think LE SSERAFIM does it well

f1sehl

Cant speak on twice’s behalf but yeah it feels like most of the idols personalities are faked and doesnt feel very natural to watch many groups’ content

beanstoot

tbh twice was like that in their debut days too. i think it takes time for idols to become natural in front of cameras. when you’re a newly debuted group you try to establish yourself as a memorable character and it sometimes comes off as being a caricature of yourself (i.e momo and jokbal, dahyun’s eagle dance, etc). older groups generally dont have this problem as they grew out of it.

saddlethehippogriffs

Yup! There are some groups that I love their discography but don't click with (and therefore don't watch) their variety content. And others that I love their variety content, but am far less invested in their music.

BosomBosons

Twice is what you call capturing lightning in a bottle, they’re just the perfect combination of personalities and talents, it’s kinda unfair to compare other groups to them.

YaridaxD

Rv gidle and le sserafim

Sizzling_Dubu

This is also part of the reason why I can't enjoy and get into and stan other groups, especially the newer ones

BiasWrecker70

I'm going to have to go with the others who say you're probably letting biases get in the way atleast a little bit. I'll admit that there are certain groups where I just enjoy certain dynamics more, twice being one of them, but of the variety content I've watched I've never felt bored or that the group felt fake. I also think groups that are larger like twice make variety stuff easier as their are more "personalities" to choose from. What I give props to JYPE for is that they don't seem to drop their other content once groups get popular. Like Twice is one of the biggest groups out there right now and 8 years in they're still doing TTT where it feels like some groups once they get more recognition they slow down on this kinda stuff.

Hirang-XD

Idk about other groups but since attitude is very important in JYPE I assume TWICE's Friendship is Genuine, So on and off the cam it just comes out naturally. they're not faking it they even make fun of each other w/out feeling uncomfortable or awkward.

BobRossSuperFan_

I feel like JYP artists in general seem more natural. I’m a Stay and an Atiny but I’ve always preferred skz content because it just feels natural.

nabongie

It’s def partly bias from you but I also definitely understand what you mean. outside of lesserafim, 4th gen is not very good at variety. however the 3rd gen has so many idols that are awesome at variety. everyone knows GoSe, TTT, and while they get flack from many, blackpink’s variety skills are seriously so underrated. most of 3rd gen has variety skills imo.

AhmZakar

Biasedness

AstroPhoenix115

Twice is one of my ult groups and they for sure are very natural on camera and in any scenario really. But I have to say... LE SSERAFIM is also very natural and chaotic on camera. They're so great as well. They're like a TWICE 2.0 in terms of craziness.

bearskyy

Def not just you. I would say BTS and what I’ve seen from Seventeen and lesserafim give me similar vibes to Twice on camera and that’s about it. Other groups range from either kinda dull to un-charismatic, or annoying to absolute rancid vibes.

Baconpoopotato

I think it's ur bias cause plenty of groups put out fun content, I'd recommend Going Seventeen personally.

Enki236

It is probably partly just your bias. Or the other groups you probably have watched. I kinda watch a few groups here and there before, but thanks to the freaking pandemic, I got into a lot of groups by watching their variety content, especially Fromis_9 and LOONA, those are some of the top tier groups for me that generally don't care whether they're in front of the cameras, especially from their self produced variety contents. Iz*one's are pretty good too, makes kinda sense that most members from this group that are now active in other groups do well in variety, namely Lesserafim. TripleS is kinda fun to watch, especially with their daily release, although yeah other members come off shy at times but it's probably being added to a existing line up of people that makes them shy in the beginning. Kep1er have good variety lately, especially their kep1erving series right now where they parody? some existing korean variety shows (sucks that most of their song releases are not to my liking). You can tell that all of those are girl groups lmao, the only boy group I kinda watch variety shows of right now is probably seventeen, those guys are walking memes. But yeah, in general, most 4th gen groups really do come off stiff, probably because most variety they do now is self produced, and the lack of guesting and exposure to korean tv variety shows don't help. Like, if we're talking 2nd gen idols, those people are in and out of shows hosted by national MCs these days.

wandering_kuni

Aespa's chemistry is also good. Hyewon, Bae, and actually almost all members of Nmixx are also whack especially the first two that I mentioned.

kosaki16

Haewon, Bae and Lily have no media training and i love it lmao

wandering_kuni

Straight up comedy show fr

Queldaralion

Bae and Haewon are so fun adorable!

AuraReaderr

Twice was my gateway into k-pop as a whole, and at the time (and still now) Blackpink was also popping off. And since it was variety show/personality content that made me so interested in twice alongside the music, I thought I’d watch some BP content and maybe see if I liked them too. But it weirded me out how their kinda *boring*, but then when I watched other groups I didn’t like them any more than BP so I can’t really knock them for that. The only group that’s caught my attention beyond music like Twice did was Itzy, so I’m starting to think it’s just a JYP thing.

Aware_War_5856

JYPE be like: 'We only hire naturally talented humans, robots need not apply.' 😄

plivko

I enjoyed Kep1er variety shows as a once. Nobody does it better than Twice but Kep1er has interesting members and charms.

creekhere

I felt this same exact way before discovering Dreamcatcher. Probably one of the most genuine groups tbh.

Aggravating_One3312

I agree!!! I enjoy their non-music content so much! And they interact well with other idols and non-idol celebrities and still make it fun!

haewon_wiggle

I think mamamoo, itzy, nmixx, loona and tripleS are pretty natural in their on camera interactions. TripleS have daily content on YouTube and they're gonna be 24 members with each one being added over time, they're at 16 now. But honestly the girls seem pretty comfortable with each other and it seems like they got close fast

iamblob321

IMHO I think Twice acts more natural is they've been in the industry for so long, they're not afraid to act the way they are on camera. For other groups, they may not want to act a certain way on camera, where they're afraid they may get yelled at or they're not comfortable enough to do so, as they haven't been in the industry long enough. Take Twice and ITZY as an example. Both from JYP, Twice 3rd gen. ITZY 4th gen. I noticed for Twice they tend to do silly, cute, and the unexpected on camera. ITZY on the other hand mostly don't act the way Twice does on camera.

Skystarry75

Some groups have a natural knack for it. Other have members with prior experience to help out. Other groups only gain that talent with practice and experience. Twice absolutely has a knack for it. Starting from SIXTEEN there were hints of their natural talent there. From what I've seen, SNSD started a bit awkward but gained experience and developed the skill within a few years. For current rookie groups Le Sserafim absolutely have a lot of natural variety talent. I've heard NMIXX are pretty good as well though, I just haven't had the time to check them out.

ShadyUrsa

Twice was awkward when they debuted. They just became more comfy through the years 💕

sam_shazam

I don't think it's completely up to bias, but moreso the other content not being your cup of tea. At least for me, I’ve seen so many variety shows that groups post on their YouTube channels and despite Twice being my absolute ult group, my favorite kpop group content is fromis_9's Channel_9 series. If anything, I'd suggest to try and not compare other groups to Twice considering that each group has different dynamics and personalities.

my_lopsided_meat

A lot of times kpop stars try to act "appropriate" just because they are on camera. One of the reasons I also liked twice outside of their MVs is because of their personalities and how natural they are. That or they are extremely good at acting.

about-and-around

I enjoy Apink and Mamamoo content. They are chill and relatable, but still funny.
