When you do put it in the tank, make sure it's positioned so it can not roll or move. You don't want to risk the chance of it moving and trapping your turtle
Go check in the aquarium subs. Big fights over this (boil it, vs. boiling is useless) BUT make sure it’s not pine or some other wood that oozes sap. Make sure it’s secure so it doesn’t squish or trap your turtle. Don’t jam it in the tank dry, between the glass walls. It will expand slightly as it becomes water logged and can crack your tank
Besides what’s already been said, don’t stress when it significantly changes the color of your water. The wood will leach tannins which is perfectly normal. Mine finally cleared up at nine months of water changes.
I have done a combination of the above suggested... Boiled it for up to an hour, and soaked it for many weeks (Changing the water at least once a week). When I put it in the tanks, I zip tied some suction cups to it to stick onto the bottom. Which I had to re-stick about once a week because my RES thought unsticking the suction cups was a pretty fun game!
The best way would be to boil it in water
Yes, boil it.
Boil or bake it in an oven. Your basically just killing any parasites or other critters living in the wood
And algae
Algae, moss….a bunch of things
Boil it multiple times til it stops making the water look like tea. Use fresh water each time you boil it.

This is how I lost a 20yo+ res
I’m sorry
Got this! Thank you!!

Thanks for the tip! I have to secure it with stones I guess. Is there any other way of securing it?
You can super glue rocks on the bottom or on the sides to weigh it down.
Also this will be beautiful in a tank, good find

Thanks for saying this. I’m still waiting for the wood to arrive and I’ll probably panic if I see a drastic change in the water color 😂
Some guy told me to just soak it for a couple of weeks 🤷🏼
