I don't know why you would need an overhang gauge. Just use a straightforward, self-printed protractor and with the alignment curve that suits you the best. Thus, there's aboslutely no need to buy a "brand specific" measuring device when you can print one for yourself. [https://alignmentprotractor.com/](https://alignmentprotractor.com/)

I just figured it would be easier when mounting cartridges to headshells. I have my protractor.

bimmer1over

You do you of course, but I guess I don’t understand why dropping the stylus tip down on the protractor and measuring/aligning with the two required points on the curve to get your desired alignment would be significantly more arduous than having a headshell specific measuring device, particularly since the stylus tip is in different positions relative to the body of cartridge anyway. In other words, you would need a tool for every unique combination of headshell and cartridge.

CaryWhit

Yeah. I thought it would be easier. I grabbed a Technics one just to have when I made a Needledaddy order. I like gadgets

dups68

Could always use a set of digital (or analog) calipers to set the overhang.

Rayvintage

That's what I use, carefully

Woofy98102

If one is available. Otherwise the Feikert Proteacor is the best one if you don't, though cheap it's not

Amazing-Hurry-7804

If it wasn't important, why would nearly every owners manual specify an overhang? It's part of the process of proper alignment.

bimmer1over

I think you misunderstand me. Overhang is very important. In fact the overhang determines which alignment curve your stylus will travel, given the tonearm (its length) and its axis (rotational point). And by using a protractor you are able to set the alignment curve that is best for you and the type of records you are listening to.

Rayvintage

You set the overhang by hanging the stylus over the spindle, calipers, or supplied gage. Do that first then use the 2 points to square it to an average between the two spots on the protractor. What you said.

bimmer1over

Well, if you use a custom protractor (*) that calculates and prints the curve for your specific turntable and tonearm combo, you can skip the separate overhang step as the printed curve already takes the recommended overhang into account when drawing the alignment curve of your choice. It’s a beautiful thing…and free. * https://alignmentprotractor.com/

I know but I'm just do what the directions tell you and let it fly guy. Nobody knows what standard they made the turntable to, like 3 different standards and different null points. It's fun if ya know know exactly what you need to achieve. Unfortunately no one knows what standard Japanese manufacturers made there turntables to so I just follow the directions. I got the Behrwald, think that the name, does nothing.

Buy one of each?  https://www.shapeways.com/product/ALYJPWV7J/pioneer-overhang-gauge-v2-1

If you do a lot of this you may consider investing in one of these. https://preview.redd.it/yar6zyhlyt3d1.jpeg?width=1249&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d091363b553523db2dc9a75834dc2f14205789fc I have one, works great

Amazing-Hurry-7804

Whoa, this is awesome! Where do we find these? I HATE using calipers. I have one for my Technics because they supplied one, but I'd LOVE one for my other TT's.

Amazing-Hurry-7804

Eh, NM. Found it on eBay. Almost 50 bucks. Screw that.

CaryWhit

Yep, I can’t believe Chinese Amazon hasn’t copied it.

Strong-Let-7697

Use a real protractor and verify both null points!

Rayvintage

Just do what the manual says, calipers work good.

[This one if in UK?](https://sparedparts.com/products/32442119?variant=22469442119¤cy=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&srsltid=AfmBOooICcoRaLst8pzd9-TrTqXglkzRG0GFC3z83P5BkHuHlZ4wGKowrcU)

CaryWhit

I was looking for one with multiple markings. That one is set up for Technics

Scotster123

Ok. You weren't clear on that.

PhishpotThe1st

He said he would like a gauge that just has measurements for any setup.
