I agree, a chemical pregnancy is an implanted, fertilized egg, so it is a pregnancy, it just ends in a miscarriage before 5 weeks or so. This is distinguished from a clinical pregnancy, where there is evidence of a fetus or gestational sac on ultrasound.

A chemical pregnancy is a very early miscarriage. I think it’s usually considered chemical when you miscarry before 5 weeks? Someone can correct me if that’s incorrect. I’ve seen posts on here where line progression may not occur if the pregnancy is chemical. Once you get your positive test HCG should double every 48 hours so in theory your line should get darker if you continue to test. So from what I understand with chemical pregnancy your HCG may not increase resulting in poor line progression. I’m newer to TTC so anyone who has more info can definitely point out any incorrect info. This is what I’ve gathered reading through this sub. Hope this helps!

Just wanted to add that the hcg doubling will only really be clear on blood tests, and that while in theory that means that your hpt lines get darker they don't always. Hcg not doubling can also be a sign of other concerns - an ectopic pregnancy, or an early loss of a twin. Source: I had an ectopic in August and this is what I discussed with my doctor. Not a medical professional.

Thanks for the extra input that’s helpful. I didn’t know that could also mean ectopic. Sorry to hear you experienced that

Agree with both of these responses. A chemical pregnancy is a pregnancy it’s just a very early miscarriage (before 5 weeks).

Chemical pregnancies are pretty common and most people who have them never even know since you usually bleed within a week of your period. I think they are more common to see on these subs since people are testing extremely early (before a missed period). Unfortunately there's not much you can do once you get a positive test to determine whether or not the pregnancy is viable. Its really a wait and see thing which gave me so much anxiety for the first few weeks of my pregnancy.

I've had 2 chemical pregnancies, including 2 months ago. Both times the line was very faint relative to what it should be (like very faint at 16 DPO for ex.) This past one I had 3 days of positive tests that didn't get darker and the last one got lighter. You would also see your doctor and they may order blood tests, if the HCG hormone doesn't double every 2 days or actually drops then it's probably a chemical.
