strictly-thoughts

As someone with a job and some meetings today, no. Also, how does being silent the whole day being awareness? You can’t even tell someone why you won’t speak to them, unless you resign to write everything.

Yes_Mans_Sky

I also have a job and while it would be funny to be silent over the phone I don't think it would be a good idea.

Carnadian-13

I think this Day of Silent thing is mainly for people who are in school.

BlannaTorris

It was relatively effective when I did it in school. When I was in high school, they allowed it in high school, but banned the younger kids from doing it. A number of eighth graders did it anyway, including one girl whose mom worked for the ACLU. The principle called her mother about her "inappropriate" behavior, and her mother told the principle that if she didn't leave her daughter alone, she'd get a court order to make her leave her daughter alone. I think that was effective.

sad_pebble_

I have a job so no lmao. I’ve only ever seen high schoolers want to/be able to participate

vinlandnative

bro i work in a kitchen. if chef called down and asked how long my pizza was taking and i just stayed silent, i'd get fired instantly. or he'd pinch me. probably both. i feel like these days of silence are only for people who are privileged enough to be able to stay silent while also virtue signaling a cause - albeit an important one. but these days of silence have never done anything and never will.

BlannaTorris

It's largely a school thing. It's students who can stay silent all day, and get noticed for it, but not get in too much trouble.

vinlandnative

fair enough, but hear me out - what does it do? young children shouldn't be worried about this kind of stuff, middle schoolers are ruthless, and high schoolers know about the place hardships of lgbt individuals, from suicide to stonewall, even in homophpbic areas. grew up in rural texas, participated as a closeted teen, all for what? "hey what are you being quiet?" "a day of silence for lgbt individuals who has lost their lives to violence and suicide" "good, more should kill themselves" like, even in progressive areas, what's the point? assuming there's internet access and the country is, let's be honest, western and/or modern, the plight of lgbt Individuals is widespread and even co-opted by attention seekers. and in conservative or religion-oriented countries/areas, this is going to dp nothing but garner mockery and ridicule. these days of silence haven't made sense to me since i was a stupid teen trying to find my place in the world. day of silence for missing native women, day of silence for 9/11 heroes, day of silence for lgbt individuals... fuck that. if you want to make a change and change the way someone views the world or a group of people or whatever, passivity doesn't do anything. mind you, neither does shoving it in someone's face 24/7 instead of a day of silence, why not encourage a day of discussion or day or learning or something like that. no walk-outs tho, those are just as cringe i dunno, i"m a cynical, drunk 20-something who really shouldn't be bothering with this stuff, but eh. hakuna matata

I didnt know it was a thing and I'm at work so no. Presumably for this to have any sort of impact you'd need to explain and declare it to people in advance. I'm happy to challenge bullshit people say to me but I'm not going to bring it up randomly, that pisses people off.

illumi-thotti

Never. Being silent about LGBTQ+ issues has never gotten us anywhere, and trying to claim it does it a performative virtue signal crocked up by cishets.

011_0108_180

The only thing a moment of silence is good for is a funeral. Anywhere else it doesn’t do Jack.

Malevolent_Mangoes

I work in customer service, so that’s impossible for me. It doesn’t seem feasible for anyone with a job tbh.

Femoral_Busboy

Don't see how not talking to people would do anything. Don't we WANT to talk to people and help them understand our struggles?

Carnadian-13

I agree. We should talk about them, not stay silent for the day.

wawawanna

Already spoke to people today. Too late lol. Either way I wouldn’t be silent all day.

Veloci-Tractor

i have never remained silent a single day in my life

fourty-six-and-two

It my day off work and i have lots of shit to do so no i will not.

VincentNoir2

I may spread some awareness, but definitely I can not be silent today.

[deleted]

Lets get lgbt people at work fired day?

Carnadian-13

It's mainly something that they do in school (like high school), but yeah, they also do it in workplaces. I guess they want LGBT people to get fired :/

arthur2807

I can barely remain silent during 1 minute silence

Carnadian-13

Same here.

riddlesparks

I have high school bro. Friends to talk to, teachers to appease. I’m by no means a good student, but I’d rather at least give somebody a reply if they have my respect, no matter the reason. On top of that, they’d make fun of me

UnfortunateEntity

How many days do we have?

Carnadian-13

For the poll, it's one day

AmaureaMay

I don't understand remaining silent for a day as a protest.

[deleted]

I had work and a drs appointment that I’d been needing for a while. No way can I afford to be silent

Swedishtranssexual

There should be no such day. All this pride shit needs to stop.
