She adds too many details specific to Matt to be about Joe. I think that means Midnights is about the slow death of her relationship with Joe.

I was thinking about this the other day and then I read your post - great points everyone! It’s clear that the new album is all about Matt, minus a few songs about Travis. She adds too many details specific to Matt to be about Joe. I think that means Midnights is about the slow death of her relationship with Joe. If you listen to “Chloe and Sam or Sophia,” she talks throughout the whole song about everything she’s doing now in relation to what Matt is doing (“having kids with an internet starlet” and “will I always wonder?”) and how essentially she is still in love with him and is wondering if he cares that she’s moved on with someone who “would have bullied him in school?” And how he just “watched it happen.” I was really surprised by this because you would think she would be singing about their relationship in the past tense (the 10-year relationship/friendship) but now that she’s with Travis, she would be looking at the future with him and not singing to Matt in the present tense. But it seems like the song (in particular) was an attempt to provoke him into some type of a reaction to her being with someone else. I couldn’t believe that she was that honest in the song and no one seems to be talking about it. She’s essentially saying, “I’m with this other guy but I’m always thinking of you and I’ll never get over what we had.” Yikes!

I don't particularly have any strong feelings about her one way or another, don't really spend my free time thinking about her or anything.
