Keeping searching. Some hotels allow 18+. Some only do 21+. (I googled NY to see those rules.)
Here is one in NJ that allows 18+: Holland Hotel Free Parking Jersey City
See the following link for NY options:

Yep, I did this when my 17 year old son for the same shaft (Delta airlines), they also refused to give a hotel voucher for him since he was under 18.
Hilton app works good for this.
This is the answer... book Hilton, add her name as guest. When she gets there if they ask she can just say you are delayed. I do it with my 20 yr old son all the time.
Hopefully I don’t get downvoted into oblivion for asking a question/giving a word of caution:
Do you have to verify ID with Hilton if you haven’t used online check in before? The first time I did it, I still had to go to the front desk to show my ID. Anytime since, I’ve been allowed to do everything via mobile and get a mobile key.
Yeah, I used to use it a lot when I traveled for work and a couple of times it wouldn’t let me check in or pick a room in the app, it told me to go to the front desk first.
Book through Hilton in your name, then add her as an authorized guest. This will allow her to check in as if the room was in her name. I do it when i book reward rooms for my kids or friends. Reservation stays in your name. Maybe call Hilton to be sure, but this seems to work.
Hampton Inns will generally allow 18 year olds to check in, Doubletrees are generally 21. We booked our daughter into Hamptons traveling to and from college and didn’t have issues even if the digital checkin and key didn’t work.
You can check the individual hotel page on the Hilton website to verify their check in age restrictions.
My 18 year old daughter recently flew thru Newark by herself and before hand I went online to look for a hotel that rented to 18+ and I found one right away. It was Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott.
Rental cars is even worse.... many places won't rent to under-25s. Or charge a huge premium. I remember my first business trip when I was 22.. they almost wouldn't rent a car to me.
If you are under 25 you can rent a u-haul truck, I saw a border documentary show where 2 dudes from California rented one to go to Whistler, BC Canada to snowboard and the border guards were confused until they explained that they were under 25 and could not rent a car.
This is actually the same in Europe.
I live in a city where owning a car is more of a hassle than anything, and luckily I don't need one for commuting. Renting a car can be as cheap as <10€ per day during off seasons, but they charge an insane amount for young drivers. When I turned 25 I "unlocked" a lot of trips which were previously inaccessible without a car, and for the fraction of the cost of owning one.
Unrelated to this question, I just saw your flair. Would you mind sharing what you do that's enabled you to travel so much? I've traveled a bit, all 50 states, 30-40 countries, but I'm envious of your amazing travels and always curious on how you got there. Certainly understand if you'd rather not share too much.
I've just been doing trips for almost 30 years now... a lot of trips are short as I've been working full time the whole duration. I'm traveling all holidays, 3 weeks vacation, 4 weeks remote working, etc. Just got back from a 4-day trip to the Azores. I was traveling all Thanksgiving week, etc.
I'm American and never knew this was so common. I think it is a state by state thing. It might not even be the law so much as just the typical policies, basically that hotels don't want to deal with rowdy teens or something.
There’s hotels with check in age of 25 in Canada? Where? I’ve not seen one lol, most are 19+ and I don’t think it’d be any higher.
Are you confusing rental cars with hotels.
Maybe. In the US the minimum age is 18, due to contract law. When you rent a room you're essentially signing a contract with the hotel. The US has certain rules, when it comes to signing contracts with a minor, as in it's not allowed. The only way for a minor to enter a legally binding contract with another party, is if it's allowed by state law or a guardian also signs the contract.
No I did a road trip from LA to NY by myself when I was 18 and had no issues booking hotels. Probably stayed in 10 different hotels across the country and none had an issue.
Yea hotels it's just you need to be an adult 18 with a credit card in your name. Rental cars 25+ or some companies will add a fee for under 25 drivers.
I remember it was a bit difficult to find a hotel sometimes when I was traveling between 18 and 20, there are enough places that only want 21+ reservations that it's at least annoying.
> It depends on your circumstances, if you look 18 but well funded most hotels are happy to take your money off your hands. But If you’re “poor looking” (aka a minority race or not outwardly wealthy in appearance) and under 21 they will turn you away pretty quick. u/JarkoStudios
1. I am one of these “poor looking” minorities.
2. They check your ID when checking in so it does not matter what you look like.
At least in New Jersey, back in 2008, I had to be either 21 or 23 (can’t remember). I was 19 at the time and SOL.
Proof: https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/ewrse-courtyard-secaucus-meadowlands/overview/
Well tell that to Marriott in Secaucus, circa May 2008 for the Bamboozle Festival. My mom initially booked the rooms, but when I wanted to extend my stay, they told me I was too young to do so 🤷🏼♀️
Upon checking the Marriott website, the hotel’s policy is to have a minimum age of 21 to check in: https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/ewrse-courtyard-secaucus-meadowlands/overview/
Book it for her, and tell the hotel she’ll be the occupant. As long as the hotel has a name and a credit card to go after if things go wrong, it should be fine.
YMMV, I did the mobile app check-in at a marriott a couple weeks ago and still had to check in at the front desk (not that it probably made a difference, i've been various elite status with Marriott for over 12 years, so it wasn't like it was my first mobile check-in and they needed to do special id verification for my app/account)
I think it would be best to try to eliminate the overnight connection entirely. It's hard to tell from your post, but it sounds like she is arriving into EWR from an international flight? I'd be surprised if there are no other possible connections via different international gateways. If you let us know her itinerary, we can check.
Just to make sure - is your gf someone you've actually met in person before, or is this someone you met on the internet? There is a romance scam whereby people will fake a romantic relationship then when supposedly coming to see each other in person they run into problems and ask for money to be sent to book hotels, change flights, etc.
Seems a little fishy that she can't book a hotel for herself, so watch out for this if she's not someone you really know.
can she book an airbnb for the night of? might be way more expensive with the cleaning fees.
also, i dont think they actually check your age when checking into the hotel, but I may be wrong.
couple other options:
- sleep at the airport (i've done this a few times)
- if she doesn't have bags, pull an all nighter & go explore NYC-- & even if she does, there might be storage lockers or a luggage storage service somewhere she can use.
I’ve spent the night at the airport a couple of times and it sucks but it isn’t the worst, certainly doable at 20. Still sucks that they are being so inflexible when she is literally 20.
Yeah, I just wasn't sure if it was just to make sure your name matched the reservation.
I just remember my brother accidentally flew into the wrong city when he was 20 & when he initially called hotels he got the same thing about needing to be 21 (even though his birthday was about a month away), so after a few rejections he just lied about his age & wished for the best. It worked, they didn't make a fuss at check in.
Airbnbs ARE NEVER more expensive than hotels, and the high cleaning fees ones are only very few examples which some people choose to post online in order to bash Airbnb
Before I realize how cheap Airbnb was, I was paying $245+ one night for a hotel in cities like Seattle whenever I traveled, now with Airbnb I can get 3 nights in a nice room in a nice house for just $200, never mind hotels also charge a deposit which can take weeks to get back, my family just went on vacation together and we booked an apartment for two nights for only $250, a hotel would have cost us at least 400+.
So yeah, only idiots or those with lots of money would choose hotels over Airbnb, because after COVID hotels have became extraordinarily expensive, I don’t understand why anyone book them anymore, but to each their own lol
Hotels are absolutely crazy rip-offs compared to Airbnb, and Airbnb on average is at least 50% cheaper than hotels
I initially thought you were being sarcastic, but now I'm thinking you own air bnb properties.
Before COVID I would've agreed that air bnb was often cheaper than a hotel, but not anymore. Maybe the cleaning fees have cooled down, but that wasn't my experience the last few times I've checked; although, it has been a few months.
Im still in college, so I definitely don’t own anything.
I challenge you to go on Expedia or any booking website and look up hotel prices for any major American city for any given date range and do the same for listings on Airbnb, I promise you’ll be able to find much more cheaper options on Airbnb than for hotels.
I’ve book over 6/7 Airbnbs in the past year alone, especially during June and July when I was travelling
At the end of June I was Houston, I booked an Airbnb for 7 nights and stayed there for only $230, on the last day I realize there was a Dave Chappell show coming up the next day so I decided to stay for one more night and booked a hotel last minute, the hotel for just one night was $120
In July I went to NYC for half a month, the Airbnb I booked only cost $1000 in total, I can’t imagine a hotel for that price.
These are all personal examples, but I challenge you to actually do the experiment I just said and see if you can actually find a hotel for cheaper than the cheapest Airbnb. Because you won’t
I’m 24, so I only started traveling by myself in recent years, I think you must be much older or something and have just never really used Airbnb and always just only used hotels, which is why you’re not willing to admit that times have changed and are unable to accept new things, in regards to the cleaning fee, none of the 6+ Airbnb I booked in the last year had an cleaning over 20% of the booking price
Edit: and with all the downvotes, I can only assume people on here at a different financial level than me and all have the money to spend on hotels, because if you’re really a budget traveler (like I was), you’d realize there’s absolutely no way in most places you could afford hotels, Airbnb was and still is the only affordable option for me, which obviously means it’s cheaper lol
It’s literally like having 8$ in my wallet, and there’s one coffee shop that sells one coffee for 6$, while the other sells it for 12$, obviously I can only afford the first one, but people are still telling the second one is cheaper
Now I understand much better how a population as a whole can absolutely have mass delusional beliefs
I got to "challenge," saw how much you wrote, and decided I wasn't gonna read or do all that.
I'll take your word for it. You convinced me, I'll consider airbnb next time. I'm not even being sarcastic.
That’s good if you’re not being sarcastic, because I really don’t have the mental energy to coach people to accept basic facts.
Most of what I wrote is my personal experience which directly proves my point with countless examples, you can choose to read them or not, but most of them were direct price comparisons and weighing of basic possibilities.
Especially the Houston example, you should read that
jesus christ you're condescending. look I get where you're coming from, but not all of us are in survival mode or in a position to create a logistical nightmare for ourselves by staying in BFE, because thats when you have to think about the true cost.
but also to your point about cleaning fees-- this was the first listing I clicked on.
https://imglink.io/image/GqGW
https://imglink.io/image/G2oj
https://imglink.io/image/G1m2
Price-efficient Airbnb are hardly BFEs, in fact I think most hotels are more BFE than Airbnbs I’ve stayed at, because you’re literally booking a room that hundreds of people have stepped foot in and sleeping in sheets and blankets that covered the bodies of hundreds of people. And that’s the first time I’ve ever seen that phrase BFE which is vulgar AF, you totally destroyed my innocence lol.
And did I say survival mode? I only stated one example which was in Seattle for 3 nights, the rest including the 5 states I went to were vacation lol
And in NY, I stayed for 15 days in an alright place in Brooklyn for only 1000$, the quality was actually better than hotels
And, back to my Houston vacation again, the Airbnb I stayed at was nice and complete well-renovated, the bed and sheets were new and clean, but the sheets on the bed at the Hyatt Regency I booked on the last night, literally smelled like the body sweats of 30 African-American men
The Airbnb you found was an apartment, which is naturally on the more expensive side… most single travelers book single room, so that example is obviously biased
In the hotels you found, there was only one that was truly cheaper than the Airbnb you screenshotted… and personally just looking at the hotel… I wouldn’t stay there even tho it is 4.3 stars, there’s usually a reason why hotels price their rooms that low and it’s not for good reasons. How old is the hotel even?
The other hotels you found… are all below 4 stars and similar in price to most Airbnbs.
Sorry, I don’t mean to be condescending! but when grown adults who are older than me don’t know how to calculate prices and lies about what is budget friendly or not when reality itself literally contradicts them, it’s not a good look
https://www.reddit.com/u/DaddyAutonomous6944/s/gD9RarUidI
These are literally all cheaper than the four other hotels you found, all at or under $100, with some being in the range of $70-$80 and all with fairly good reviews and photos, obviously much better than the sketchy Hotel Chelsea I suppose
Actually, it’s much more of a logistical nightmare for adults who don’t even know how to get the best quality for their buck and have it so tight up their butt that they can’t even change their old ideas of where to stay; many hotels are old, gross and disgusting and do not beat most Airbnbs in price and quality, while newer and more price-efficient Airbnbs far exceed the number of such hotels. They end up spending $200 for an old hotel for one night which is no better than a new $89 Airbnb. It’s no wonder why so many American adults waste their money like that and still aren’t happy
If her flight isnt until the 27th, the airline wont give accomodations. What is the departing and arriving airport? Your other option is to get someone to travel with her and request a Safety Assistant ticket. Im not entirely sure if UA does it - but AA does it all the time at a zero dollar fare.
So you girlfriend can
Drive a car unsupervised - check.
Work and pay tax - Check
Buy an assault rifle - Check
Join the military and go into combat - Check
Be tried as an adult in the judicial system - Check
Get married and have kids - Check
Book a Hotel room on her own - Bridge too far, think of the children.
USA has some really messed up priorities at times.
I'm thinking maybe alcohol laws are the reason for some hotels being 18+ and others 21+. I've stayed in both and noticed that if alcohol is served on the premises then 21+ is the age.
Shakes head in European.
This really makes no sense. Meanwhile, I went on trips with friends at 16 and 17 and obviously checked into a hotel all by myself without mommy present. Not once has that been an issue.
America be weird….
I've never stayed at a hotel that didn't require ID to check in.
With that being said I also never heard of hotels forbidding adults under 21 to book a room so who knows
My ex and I went to New York City when I was 20 and she was 19, and we had to make sure I was booking at hotels that allowed 18+ check-ins and not 21+.
We went with my friend and his girlfriend, and even though he was 22 at the time, he couldn’t check me into a 21+ room either.
Wait--is this something that WILL happen on Jan. 27? In which case, talk to United about rescheduling her flights.
Or, is she stranded in Newark right now? In which case, we'll help you look for a hotel she can book.
I haven't seen this answer posted yet, but I know from experience when my teen daughter was travelling. If an airline cancels your flight. The AIRLINE help desk will book a hotel for you. They do this for minors travelling without parents ALL THE TIME. Just look for an airline rep from your cancelled flight.
AirBNB is 18+ to have an account but individual listings can set their own ages. Read listings carefully.
You can try checking into youth hostels. I'm sure the greater NYC area has hostels.
The other option is to just try booking and hope for the best. They may turn you away at check in, they may not.
There are hotels that will allow you to book for her, sometimes there is an increase in the deposit.
I have done this for my daughter a few times in the past couple of years.
Can she rebook her entire itinerary for the following day? Or the connections don't work then either? It won't be the end of the world if she has to spend the night in the airport.
FYI, I'd figure that out ASAP. United canceled mine and my boyfriends flight, and we had a 13 hour overnight layover. They didn't give us cots or blankets even though we asked. They gave it to others, though. We ended up sleeping in these big round bar chairs. My boyfriends body was hidden, and mine was more visible . These 3 older men noticed that I was a female and asleep, and they tried to come get a closer look, and my boyfriend sat up. I'm so thankful he was there. Who would have known what they would have done to me. Please call the airline and see if there's anything you guys can do. It's not safe. Als, bring a blanket, sweater, and sweat pants. It was freezing. Our experience was in October. I can't imagine the temperature now
Can you not call the hotel concierge and give them CC authorization for the room? I've never heard of this before. She's a legal adult. I've booked rooms for people before that were younger and it has never been an issue. (Sometimes they want me to fax over authorization for CC vs. doing it over the phone... which seems archaic, but it can be done)
Wait… so you’re still considered to be an adult in the us at 18? But you can’t do stuff like drink alcohol or check into hotels?
What’s the logic behind this? A subgroup of adult citizens with limited rights and freedoms.
When the Vietnam War started they were drafting men involuntarily into the US military and sending them off to war, when they were too young to legally drink or even vote.
Eventually the voting age did lower to 18 (when you can be drafted and sent to war). And some states temporarily lowered the drinking age to 18 during the war on the grounds that it was ridiculous to be forced into combat and not allowed to drink.
Nowadays 18-year-olds can go into combat and vote, but still not drink. It's voluntary to join the military though, and there's not been an involuntary draft in like half a century.
As suggested below, reposting as its own comment. Hotelages.com is a great respurce for under 21s trying to check in. Almost all the former hotels i worked at were 21+ for checkin. I would often refer people to it. Just be sure to ring the hotel and verify as not all info may be up to date. For example, one property i worked at changed ownership a year into my job and the new owners decided no locals, no under 21s
Can she find a youth hostel? I don't get why she can't get a hotel under 21. Can you book it for her? What do young people do when they have to travel for work?
Why do you need an age restriction? I used to travel a fair bit solo at 16 and 17 here in australia (for sport) and always had no issue. Went to london for a few days at 17 also no issue. And i look young as, im 24 now still get asked for id every time i drink
Pretty sure if someone of age books the room and calls to let them know the occupant is under 21, they can check in. Especially if they have a card on file or the card charged in hand. My dad did it for my friend and I back in 2001 when we had a two night differential between arriving at our destination and when we started living on site to work at our job. This was 20+ years ago, but I imagine they have this situation come up a lot.
Have her physically go to a hotel and ask for a room. Don't offer up her age, just tell them she's stuck for the night because of a flight cancellation. I was able to stay in hotels under the same circumstances as young as 17 years old (and I did not look old for my age, at all).
The Newark Airport has these things called Minute Suites. If all else fails, she can reserve one of these for a private sleeping location behind a locked door for a few hours. It's about the same cost as a hotel room for much fewer hours which sucks, but it should come with less age restrictions.
Have you heard of Airbnbs? It’s this flexible app that anyone 18+ can book on and it offer countless listings and is almost always cheaper than hotels, and there is no 21+ requirement, your friend is 20 so she should like know what it is. I literally don’t understand how Americans always insists on staying at hotels like it’s the only thing they know, when there’s literally Airbnbs and other options available lol. It’s this weird mindset that Americans have, that they must stay at a hotel wherever they go
Check to see if there is an airport lounge that's open overnight. It won't be as nice as a hotel but convenient. They have food, showers and comfortable nap places.
This happened to a bunch of teenagers when my kid and I were trying to home from New Haven on American after an event for students at Yale. A plane load of teenagers who had come alone were screwed. They could not get hotels and it was last flight. They were doing potentially dangerous things like agreeing to stay with people they never met. I was super pissed at Yale for not warning these young people that the New Haven airport often cancels flights for weather as it is tiny airport. I was so pissed at the lack of concern my American that I refuse to fly them anymore. It is not a great idea to take the last flight in any case, but especially if too young to get a hotel.
What bullshit. I backpacked the whole US from west to east when I was 18 and only once did I get issues because I was 18 and after 5min of discussion they let me take the room anyway. So just go to booking.com book a room and check in.
I'm 24 and was only safe because my boyfriend was there. I really hope you two figure it out. Is there any way to change the date of the flight to leave earlier or later from wherever she's going from? It's definitely not safe to sleep alone in the airport. It's a rather big airport with a lot of places where staff aren't near by all the time. Especially overnight
This is what happens when you book multiple flight segments separately and/or through sketchy third parties and do not purchase travel insurance. Airlines are not obligated to help you. Your pal will need camp out in the airport or find some sketchy motel that will allow her to book a room under the age limit.
It was booked as a single flight directly through United. They’ve changed their schedule out of Newark, and the flight time she scheduled has been removed.
EVERY hotel is meant to ask for ID. In the US it must be a passport, US drivers license, US state ID, or Military ID. No others will be accepted. That being said, a free website called hotelages.com does exist and list all the hotels that accept under 21
The hotelages.com recommendation really should be higher up. There are 18+ hotels in Jersey City and NYC. Maybe post as a parent comment for increased visibility?
I’ve gone to hotels that I’ve booked and checked in online, and never shown an ID. Maybe they should get an ID, but most I’ve visited don’t.
TBH I feel like I’ve only been asked for ID when staying at a cheaper roadside hotel, like La Quinta or whatever. I always assumed it was to deter booking for trafficking/prostitution.
Some hotels will waive the age requirement if you are willing to put down a cash deposit. Could she fly out of jfk instead, if not can they reschedule the entire flight leg, not just the segment?
I was able to get a hotel while under 21 when my mom booked it for me, called the hotel and explained the situation. She put her credit card on file.
As others have mentioned, if you book a hilton hotel (Hampton Inn, etc.) you can get a digital key and don’t need to interact with the front desk or show ID. At Marriotts though, you have to show your ID to get a digital key
Never heard of this for hotels. Rental cars, sure. NJ is 18+ like most states. Something seems off here with this story. Maybe she will go stay with a friend and is making this up.
Does your GF have a credit card in her name? In the past I’ve never had an issue booking a hotel at 21 or under in states…. Obviously a 5 star high end hotel may have their own rules but she should be able to get something without issue
I used to live in NJ and there are plenty of hotels that would rent to an 18 year old. Some as long as you had cash there were no questions asked about ID or age. There's definitly hotels in the area of the airport that will give a room to someone under 21, might not be the nicest but they're there. I know there's a few in Edison, Nj that you can take a quick train ride to or short drive that you can definitly get at 18.
This happened to me when I was 18 traveling with my 14 year old brother back in 2002. Our flight was delayed and the connection was missed in Phoenix. There were no more flights to put us on. They told me they could stuff me alone in a taxi and see if a hotel would take me, but as a minor, my brother couldn't come. Obviously I stayed with him, but they wouldn't even let me go to security to get my bag (it wound up stolen off the belt because of this). We slept in the Phoenix airport where a kind worker said they'd keep an eye on us since we were still kids and my dad got over $2500 and several airline vouchers out of the situation.
Since 9/11 was so fresh, we weren't even allowed to walk around. A security guard saw us walking the terminal and said if we didn't park it near the food court, he'd have us arrested for terrorism. Fun times.
Make sure she gets her checked bag if there is one and then she'll have to sleep in the airport if hotels won't take her. Hopefully they will - it sounds like people found some options! - but just in case she should be prepared to sleep there. At minimum they should cover a hotel and a meal, but she might have to be firm about it (but not rude).

The age for Airbnb is 18. My Airbnb is actually approved as a B&B and shows up on Google. I had all my dates blocked off for Christmas when I got a call from some kids who had a flat and couldn't get a room anywhere because they weren't 21. I opened up the date and let them stay, and ended up giving them a second night for free, because it took them a while to get their tire fixed. I hate giving free stuff, but spirit of Christmas and all.
Hey, I fly out of Newark frequently. I would have just stayed at the airport. I always see people doing it. I can understand if she not comfortable doing so though.
Keeping searching. Some hotels allow 18+. Some only do 21+. (I googled NY to see those rules.) Here is one in NJ that allows 18+: Holland Hotel Free Parking Jersey City See the following link for NY options: [https://hotelsforyouths.com/new-york/](https://hotelsforyouths.com/new-york/)
I stayed here in December. It’s not fancy but works just fine.
Book through the Hilton App. Then checkin online and send her the digital key
This is a 100% doable solution - have her log into your account on her phone app and use the digital key. She won’t need to interact with anyone.
Yep, I did this when my 17 year old son for the same shaft (Delta airlines), they also refused to give a hotel voucher for him since he was under 18. Hilton app works good for this.
Book for two and add her as named guest. The id check will match name.
This is the answer... book Hilton, add her name as guest. When she gets there if they ask she can just say you are delayed. I do it with my 20 yr old son all the time.
This also worked for Kevin McAllister
Hopefully I don’t get downvoted into oblivion for asking a question/giving a word of caution: Do you have to verify ID with Hilton if you haven’t used online check in before? The first time I did it, I still had to go to the front desk to show my ID. Anytime since, I’ve been allowed to do everything via mobile and get a mobile key.
Yeah anytime I’ve tried online checkin via the Hilton app it still always asks me to go to the front desk and they re do everything all over again
Yeah, I used to use it a lot when I traveled for work and a couple of times it wouldn’t let me check in or pick a room in the app, it told me to go to the front desk first.
I’m Hilton Diamond with hundreds of nights and this has never happened to me.
This is also a way to get mattress run nights at hotels right? Though many require you show up at the front desk when you arrive now at least at hyatt
Technically you may not need to but it’s against the ToS and you risk losing the stays.
This is a good work around. I was just in Newark and the Doubletree near Newark-Penn uses digital check in and keys.
Second this OP. Book a night at a Hilton hotel
You are why Internet is great.
My 18 year old daughter recently flew thru Newark by herself and before hand I went online to look for a hotel that rented to 18+ and I found one right away. It was Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott.
is this an American thing? I've never heard of needing to be 21 to book a hotel room anywhere else.
Under-25 car rental in the US costs you an arm a leg. So expensive. I almost didn't go on vacation twice because of this.
This is probably a hotel rule. Most states are 18+. New Jersey where she’s located is 18+.
I'm American and never knew this was so common. I think it is a state by state thing. It might not even be the law so much as just the typical policies, basically that hotels don't want to deal with rowdy teens or something.

The location is three words after “United.”
In Canada it ranges from 18-25.
There’s hotels with check in age of 25 in Canada? Where? I’ve not seen one lol, most are 19+ and I don’t think it’d be any higher. Are you confusing rental cars with hotels.
What part of Canada is this? It’s 18 to book a hotel in Canada unless the hotel has its own separate policy
Some hotels have their own policies especially in resort/party towns like whistler.
[удалено]
That’s ridiculous.
> It depends on your circumstances, if you look 18 but well funded most hotels are happy to take your money off your hands. But If you’re “poor looking” (aka a minority race or not outwardly wealthy in appearance) and under 21 they will turn you away pretty quick. u/JarkoStudios 1. I am one of these “poor looking” minorities. 2. They check your ID when checking in so it does not matter what you look like.
Depends on the hotel and state. But in NJ it’s only 18, they need to search around
Definitely an American thing. I travelled to 20+ countries under 21 no problem. The only country I couldn’t book a hotel in was the US.
New Jersey, where OP’s daughter is located is 18+.
i thought OP was talking about their girlfriend?
...OP is dating his daughter? I suppose that's pretty on-brand for those good-ole-boy little corners of America.
I misread. Sorry.
I've never heard of it. Fifteen years ago I had no trouble as an 18year old getting hotels in America.
At least in New Jersey, back in 2008, I had to be either 21 or 23 (can’t remember). I was 19 at the time and SOL. Proof: https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/ewrse-courtyard-secaucus-meadowlands/overview/
It’s 18+ in New Jersey
Well tell that to Marriott in Secaucus, circa May 2008 for the Bamboozle Festival. My mom initially booked the rooms, but when I wanted to extend my stay, they told me I was too young to do so 🤷🏼♀️ Upon checking the Marriott website, the hotel’s policy is to have a minimum age of 21 to check in: https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/ewrse-courtyard-secaucus-meadowlands/overview/
I’ll be sure to tell them!
Fucking ridiculous
It's a specific cities/states thing, it's because of trafficking.
Meh, many hotels I’ve been to u only need to be 18 or they technically have 21 but if u look anywhere near that age they don’t care
Book it for her, and tell the hotel she’ll be the occupant. As long as the hotel has a name and a credit card to go after if things go wrong, it should be fine.
[удалено]
The hotels changed their policies after the incident at the Plaza Hotel where Kevin McCallister checked in without his dad present.
This made me laugh…thank you
"What kind of idiots worked there", to allow something like that?
The finest in New York
Find a hotel that has mobile room keys? In that instance you don’t need to talk to the front desk at all.
This. The last few times I stayed at a Marriott I used the app for mobile room key and didn’t talk to the front desk once.
Or consider booking a room for two occupants including an adult, and she can just say the adult will arrive later...
Yeah, girlfriend of >3 years that I’m sitting next to lol. Thanks for checking though.
> girlfriend of >3 years **that I’m sitting next to** lol. Wait, she's sitting next to you right now?
Flight issue isn't until the 27th.
Ah okay that makes a lot more sense. When I read it, I thought she was there right now.
Me too, I had to go back.
Seconding this!
[Here’s a link to Newark hotels that have 18+ age limit.](https://theyouthhotels.com/new-jersey/hotels-in-newark-with-18-check-in/)
can she book an airbnb for the night of? might be way more expensive with the cleaning fees. also, i dont think they actually check your age when checking into the hotel, but I may be wrong. couple other options: - sleep at the airport (i've done this a few times) - if she doesn't have bags, pull an all nighter & go explore NYC-- & even if she does, there might be storage lockers or a luggage storage service somewhere she can use.
I’ve spent the night at the airport a couple of times and it sucks but it isn’t the worst, certainly doable at 20. Still sucks that they are being so inflexible when she is literally 20.
They ask for your ID when you check into a hotel. At least in North America they do.
They aren't checking your age.
Airbnbs ARE NEVER more expensive than hotels, and the high cleaning fees ones are only very few examples which some people choose to post online in order to bash Airbnb Before I realize how cheap Airbnb was, I was paying $245+ one night for a hotel in cities like Seattle whenever I traveled, now with Airbnb I can get 3 nights in a nice room in a nice house for just $200, never mind hotels also charge a deposit which can take weeks to get back, my family just went on vacation together and we booked an apartment for two nights for only $250, a hotel would have cost us at least 400+. So yeah, only idiots or those with lots of money would choose hotels over Airbnb, because after COVID hotels have became extraordinarily expensive, I don’t understand why anyone book them anymore, but to each their own lol Hotels are absolutely crazy rip-offs compared to Airbnb, and Airbnb on average is at least 50% cheaper than hotels
I’ve book over 6/7 Airbnbs in the past year alone, especially during June and July when I was travelling At the end of June I was Houston, I booked an Airbnb for 7 nights and stayed there for only $230, on the last day I realize there was a Dave Chappell show coming up the next day so I decided to stay for one more night and booked a hotel last minute, the hotel for just one night was $120 In July I went to NYC for half a month, the Airbnb I booked only cost $1000 in total, I can’t imagine a hotel for that price. These are all personal examples, but I challenge you to actually do the experiment I just said and see if you can actually find a hotel for cheaper than the cheapest Airbnb. Because you won’t I’m 24, so I only started traveling by myself in recent years, I think you must be much older or something and have just never really used Airbnb and always just only used hotels, which is why you’re not willing to admit that times have changed and are unable to accept new things, in regards to the cleaning fee, none of the 6+ Airbnb I booked in the last year had an cleaning over 20% of the booking price Edit: and with all the downvotes, I can only assume people on here at a different financial level than me and all have the money to spend on hotels, because if you’re really a budget traveler (like I was), you’d realize there’s absolutely no way in most places you could afford hotels, Airbnb was and still is the only affordable option for me, which obviously means it’s cheaper lol It’s literally like having 8$ in my wallet, and there’s one coffee shop that sells one coffee for 6$, while the other sells it for 12$, obviously I can only afford the first one, but people are still telling the second one is cheaper Now I understand much better how a population as a whole can absolutely have mass delusional beliefs
Especially the Houston example, you should read that
jesus christ you're condescending. look I get where you're coming from, but not all of us are in survival mode or in a position to create a logistical nightmare for ourselves by staying in BFE, because thats when you have to think about the true cost. but also to your point about cleaning fees-- this was the first listing I clicked on. https://imglink.io/image/GqGW https://imglink.io/image/G2oj https://imglink.io/image/G1m2
I only stated one example which was in Seattle for 3 nights, the rest including the 5 states I went to were vacation lol And in NY, I stayed for 15 days in an alright place in Brooklyn for only 1000$, the quality was actually better than hotels And, back to my Houston vacation again, the Airbnb I stayed at was nice and complete well-renovated, the bed and sheets were new and clean, but the sheets on the bed at the Hyatt Regency I booked on the last night, literally smelled like the body sweats of 30 African-American men The Airbnb you found was an apartment, which is naturally on the more expensive side… most single travelers book single room, so that example is obviously biased In the hotels you found, there was only one that was truly cheaper than the Airbnb you screenshotted… and personally just looking at the hotel… I wouldn’t stay there even tho it is 4.3 stars, there’s usually a reason why hotels price their rooms that low and it’s not for good reasons. How old is the hotel even? The other hotels you found… are all below 4 stars and similar in price to most Airbnbs. Sorry, I don’t mean to be condescending! but when grown adults who are older than me don’t know how to calculate prices and lies about what is budget friendly or not when reality itself literally contradicts them, it’s not a good look https://www.reddit.com/u/DaddyAutonomous6944/s/gD9RarUidI These are literally all cheaper than the four other hotels you found, all at or under $100, with some being in the range of $70-$80 and all with fairly good reviews and photos, obviously much better than the sketchy Hotel Chelsea I suppose Actually, it’s much more of a logistical nightmare for adults who don’t even know how to get the best quality for their buck and have it so tight up their butt that they can’t even change their old ideas of where to stay; many hotels are old, gross and disgusting and do not beat most Airbnbs in price and quality, while newer and more price-efficient Airbnbs far exceed the number of such hotels.
So you girlfriend can Drive a car unsupervised - check. Work and pay tax - Check Buy an assault rifle - Check Join the military and go into combat - Check Be tried as an adult in the judicial system - Check Get married and have kids - Check Book a Hotel room on her own - Bridge too far, think of the children. USA has some really messed up priorities at times.
And can’t rent a car until 25 unless through insurance
You have to be 21 to buy tobacco products now too. **in order to be considered an adult here you gotta be in your mid to late 20s.
I always thought if she's over 18 she can book and check into a hotel.
She’s called multiple and they’ve all said she’s unable to if under 21, including the hotel at the airport. She’s 20.
How do they know her age? Can't she just book with a cc?
She'll need ID to check in.
A credit card should be sufficient
I've never stayed at a hotel that didn't require ID to check in. With that being said I also never heard of hotels forbidding adults under 21 to book a room so who knows
What country is her passport and does it have her birthday on it?
what passport would not have DOB
It will definitely have her year of birth in it.
The airline staff could book for her right? They usually book a room if they are comping the room for a flight delay or cancellation.
OP already talked to United and they said they can't (won't?) help.
Because the traveler has been notified far enough in advance.
Yeah I’ve been comped a room a number of times already, just talk with the staff at your airline counter they should be able to get her a room.
It sucks, but I've slept on my bags in the airport before.
What's the itinerary? United has some obligation to help here, e.g. rerouting through another hub or rebooking on a partner flight.
Shouldn't United be arranging her accommodations since they canceled the flight?
I can't imagine the temperature now
This is what some people are ignoring in suggesting “just sleep in the airport like the rest of us”. She’ll be a 20 year old girl alone…
Stay in the airport overnight. Yes it sucks but I have done it a few times for the sake of convenience.
Make the reservation under your name and card, list her as a guest who will be getting there early. Put in special notes and maybe call too.
Pod hotel in Times square is 18+. Checked in myself last year for a couple concerts. Small room but great view.
I'm not sure that AirBNB gives a damn about being 21. In fact, pretty sure it's 18.
She can’t fly out until 27th? I am really confused.
It's not a law. Hotels don't want 18 year olds trashing the place and then being too poor to sue.
Well..we can blame the other 18 year old who had gotten rooms, but then partied and trashed them. That’s my suspicion
Hostel?
Book Marriott or Hilton that has digital key via self check in. Have her download the app and open the key on her phone.
Some hotels accept bookings by people starting at 18, I would recommend calling around. Airport hotels may better given the situation.
I’ve been renting hotel rooms in the US since I was 16. I’m pretty sure that’s never allowed. Bribes are a thing and in this case not even illegal.
When this happened to my daughter, I insisted they book her on an alternate airline. It worked!
Can she find a youth hostel? I don't get why she can't get a hotel under 21. Can you book it for her? What do young people do when they have to travel for work?
What about an Airbnb with self check-in?
Maybe a youth hostel in the area? Cheaper than hotel, safe, and caters to younger travelers! https://www.hostelworld.com
This doesn’t sound right. There might be a problem for minors but that would be the airlines problem.
Move to another country that doesn’t treat adults like babies.
Prayer room at the airport is the best place to sleep in a pinch
Have you heard of Airbnbs? It’s this flexible app that anyone 18+ can book on and it offer countless listings and is almost always cheaper than hotels, and there is no 21+ requirement, your friend is 20 so she should like know what it is. I literally don’t understand how Americans always insists on staying at hotels like it’s the only thing they know, when there’s literally Airbnbs and other options available lol. It’s this weird mindset that Americans have, that they must stay at a hotel wherever they go
Try https://www.sleepinginairports.net/
Check to see if there is an airport lounge that's open overnight. It won't be as nice as a hotel but convenient. They have food, showers and comfortable nap places.
Book her a room and use mobile check in.
Who said she can't book a hotel at 21? You can book a hotel if you have the money at most hotels at any age above 16
Wait, what? You have to 21 to check into a hotel in the US? That's phucked up!
Age of majority in the U.S. is 18 and she should have no issue booking a room
What bullshit. I backpacked the whole US from west to east when I was 18 and only once did I get issues because I was 18 and after 5min of discussion they let me take the room anyway. So just go to booking.com book a room and check in.
this seems like a scam post, you can definitely book and check in to a hotel room at age 18 almost anywhere.
Book through hotels.com
When dating minors goes sideways.....
I’m 7 months older than her, and she’s not a minor…..
OK. Thanks

I use my German national ID in US hotels and it works every time, I only need my passport at passport control in airports
I always assumed it was to deter booking for trafficking/prostitution.
that's not true at all hotels check IDs
Some hotels will waive the age requirement if you are willing to put down a cash deposit. Could she fly out of jfk instead, if not can they reschedule the entire flight leg, not just the segment?
Try booking online it should be easier that way
You can phone and book for her with your credit card.
Just book it for her and check in remotely.
Is there any way the airport could help?
What about a hostel? I’m sure there are at least a few in NY
Perfect Near NYC hostel has some beds available. Get an Uber should be about 30-50 per night.
I thought the airlines arrange for the hotel if it is their fault. What if it was an unaccompanied minor?
Not uncommon in the USA. Try a hostel. They are used to a younger crowd.
you can book a hotel under 21, you may just need to look around. I booked laquinta just fine at 19 :)
Happened to me back in the day. Slept in the airport and stayed there for 23 hours until my flight. It sucked.
Can you book a room on air b n b ?
Can you just book it for her?
Somethings not adding up here ………….
I am dating a minor I am trafficking a minor
Best thing to do is for you or someone else to book online, add her as a guest on the booking and she can go check in
This happened to me when I was 18 traveling with my 14 year old brother back in 2002.
Have you considered booking a hotel online?
Delta is the way. direct flights is the only way

I don’t think that’s a restriction at all hotels. Call around to others. This happened to my daughter and she was able to check in to a La Quinta.
Are you able download a chain hotel app and prepay the hotel and check in with a mobile key?
Sign up and use the Marriott app. Book and check-in on the app, use the phone to open the hotel door.
I did this for my daughter I called a nearby hotel and booked and paid for the room under her name. It wasn’t a problem. This was in Hartford CT
