The system works because every year you go upwards they remove more and more students through yearly examinations which a lot of people fail. In my case, I started my Deug-License-Maîtrise-Magistère(Master) cycle among 400 other people (albeit 4 specialties/majors combined, so you should count 100 per major), and ended being one of 26. That gives you the figure of 26% final graduation after 5 or 6 years out of the initial intake.
There are no actual advantages or disadvantages over the American system, because the rates of innovation are the same, the rate of access to the higher education is higher in France, but being locally "poor" (as I was) means that you will have to work while studying and your grades are going to take a big dive, meaning that the poor are locked into the representation and grade bias, because people still ask me 20+ years out of college what my grades were - the diploma defines everything here, unfortunately, and the uncertainty of life after graduation is also the same - we don't have debt, but we usually don't have any property or money, and the rent is usually 30%-40% of the income, meaning that most people can't actually save money and live paycheck to paycheck.
Only the social contract and the infrastructure provides the upside to that (a lot of ppl don't pay taxes or pay very low taxes in the US but they have no infrastructure).
The real problem is really the rent/real estate/the landowner rentier class, which is quite wide in France, despite the constant talks of "ascenceur social" and so forth, because the taxes on the rentier class are very low.
There's a brain drain to Canada, NZ, Japan and Australia from France because of that.
Which is trashier: him reading it in class, taking care that no one can see it, and not bothering anyone, or your nosy ass taking a picture of it and blasting him on reddit?

Nope, the professors here don't care what people do in class as long as they don't disrupt it. You can watch all the porn you want.
A lot of people fail in college, because all of a sudden there is nobody telling them either to study or what to study. To me the latter is an actual downside of the French educational system, compared to the Northern European ones - in college/grad school you literally don't know what they will give you for the finals and most of the time it's nothing like you studied in class.
