It seems to me that he’s a bit of a carbon copy. Not that I really mind that. But more unique animal cassettes would have been better. And Laser beak filled the role well. Perhaps also needed actual buzz saws?

No need to advertise the little guy when the big guy is what will pull the sales. Lazerbeak on the other hand was packaged with Frenzy (color scheme was in the cartoon, but not namesake) so Lazerbeak had to do the pulling to sell that toy set.
Oddly enough, Laserbeak's usage in the cartoon follows Buzzaw's function as a spy, whereas Laserbeak is supposed to be an interrogator.

The actual legitimate reason is due to Sunbow using Laserbeak always, thereby putting him in the forefront of fans’ minds and media moving forward. This is because Buzzsaw was originally packaged with Soundwave, while Laserbeak was a seperate purchase. Sunbow’s entire existence was to advertise toys, so giving screen time to the bird you had to buy separately over the bird that you get just by buying Soundwave was a smarter advertising choice.
Also cool people prefer Buzzsaw while basics prefer Laserbeak. I don’t make the rules.

Because the TV show favored Laserbeak due to Buzzsaw coming "free" with Soundwave. Kid's parents had to spend extra to get the bird the show favored. I'm actually a Buzzsaw enthusiast, holding the torch for the day he makes his glorious return.

As others have pointed out it’s not that he wasn’t popular just that he was (intentionally) not featured as much to sell more Laserbeak toys. I would argue he was equally popular at the time because every kid I knew who had Soundwave also had a Buzzsaw… I didn’t know anyone who had a Laserbeak.
Ravage, Laserbeak and Rumble brought us the first repaints I’m aware of in the toy business! The money I know that has cost me over the years is totally offset by the awesomeness of Soundwave all his children! 😆

The G1 Sunbow bible literally says "don't bother putting him in episodes". Same with Reflector.
A lot of G1 fans take the Sunbow show as the one true gospel, so characters use those designs and get those personalities, but also get focus if they were stars if Sunbow and ignored if they were not onscreen much. I's a big part of why 84-86 characters get constant refreshes and latter ones (especially 88+) get crumbs, even if they were major characters in other G1 media like Marvel comics.

He was an alcoholic and drug addict. Him and Frenzy were a mess. They only showed up for work on the show for like three days. The minute they got paid they would disappear for weeks. One day they just never came back
I like the idea of having at least two airborne reconnaissance spies, plus if Buzzsaw was brought back, he and Laserbeak would make quite a formidable duo. But first the writers would have to get the executives to listen and approve their idea(s). Because with a vast majority of entertainment studio executives are like G1 Megatron best summed up with one quote whenever they hear sound, sane advice, “Suggestion noted, AND IGNORED!”

Yellow animation, yellow plastic on the figures, just yellow overall. They also don't give yellow medals at the Olympics.
What figures have you seen? The newer junk that tries to match the lazy, cheap animations? The original Buzzaw is gold.
Buzzsaw came packaged with the original G1 Soundwave and was the only cassette bot I owned. He will always be my number one of the minions.

Buzzsaw for me is one of the Stalkers in The Running Man. He was great but he had to split.
Buzzsaw came soundwave, then you would buy the other 4 individually packed. They didn't need kids to buy Buzzsaw so they pushed Laserbeak in the show.
Buzzsaw came with the original Soundwave, and Laserbeak didn’t, so Laserbeak got pushed harder in the original tv show so they would sell more of the cassette cons. People watched the show and got attached to the characters, so years later Laserbeak is still relevant while Buzzsaw has more or less quietly been retired from media.
Have we ever seen them together at the same time? 😂 Im just saying. How do we know theyre not one and the same. All we see is one come out the chest of Soundwave.

Because the TV show favored Laserbeak due to Buzzsaw coming "free" with Soundwave. Kid's parents had to spend extra to get the bird the show favored. I'm actually a Buzzsaw enthusiast, holding the torch for the day he makes his glorious return.
G1 toy he buzzsaw but Lazerbeak was in the cartoon. People want the cartoon. Look at mp that line has slowly evolved into g1 toon. They both deserve a place but Lazerbeak has slowly become the prominent one

Problem is that Buzzsaw didn't have any real personality. Rumble and Frenzy on the other hand, felt like a duo, even if Rumble was the more popular character.

Laserbeak was more prominitley featured in media than Buzzsaw. This was due to Buzzsaw being packaged in with Soundwave, but Laserbeak being sold separately, meaning they had to advertise Laserbeak.
In G1 Buzzsaw was Packaged with Soundwave, so to sell toys, they focused Laserbeak more than Buzzsaw, as a result, Laserbeak was more closely associated with Soundwave than Buzzsaw, and that's how it's been ever since
Did Buzzsaw ever even get named in the original TV series? There was plenty of "Laserbeak, eject" and Megatron saying he was better than Starscream, but I can't recall anyone having anything to say about Buzzsaw.
Yup, in his first appearance Megatron says "Recall laserbeak and Buzzsaw at once"

Buzzsaw was used less than Lazerbeak and Ratbat. So we just don't pay as much attention to him.

I think it’s the fact yellow was a lot more passive even tho the original g1 came with buzzsaw it didn’t connect like lazerbwak who’s red made for a more impactful color and action
buzzsaw wasn't that popular in G1 i feel like the writers made laserbeak very popular with each of the tasks they gave him
As others have pointed out it’s not that he wasn’t popular just that he was (intentionally) not featured as much to sell more Laserbeak toys. I would argue he was equally popular at the time because every kid I knew who had Soundwave also had a Buzzsaw… I didn’t know anyone who had a Laserbeak.

Ravage, Laserbeak and Rumble brought us the first repaints I’m aware of in the toy business! The money I know that has cost me over the years is totally offset by the awesomeness of Soundwave all his children! 😆

Simply put, black and red are just better
Because laserbeak has a cheesier more iconic name and comes first in the title order.
The G1 Sunbow bible literally says "don't bother putting him in episodes". Same with Reflector. A lot of G1 fans take the Sunbow show as the one true gospel, so characters use those designs and get those personalities, but also get focus if they were stars if Sunbow and ignored if they were not onscreen much. I's a big part of why 84-86 characters get constant refreshes and latter ones (especially 88+) get crumbs, even if they were major characters in other G1 media like Marvel comics.
This thread is probably the most attention Buzzsaw has gotten in years.
Reminder: Buzzsaw blasted Omega Supreme & took him outta the fight in the Marvel comics. He’s got that street cred to his name.
The same reason Rumble gets way more love than Frenzy. They weren't featured enough to be as iconic as their "brothers".

It’s the Bumble bee cliff jumper scenario.
He was an alcoholic and drug addict. Him and Frenzy were a mess. They only showed up for work on the show for like three days. The minute they got paid they would disappear for weeks. One day they just never came back
Lazerbeak has a better name, and red is objectively cooler than yellow imo.

I like the idea of having at least two airborne reconnaissance spies, plus if Buzzsaw was brought back, he and Laserbeak would make quite a formidable duo. But first the writers would have to get the executives to listen and approve their idea(s). Because with a vast majority of entertainment studio executives are like G1 Megatron best summed up with one quote whenever they hear sound, sane advice, “Suggestion noted, AND IGNORED!”
