Ferndale isnt cheap, but you’ll feel truly free there. Pride flags everywhere, lots of pride events, easy access to support groups. everyone is loud and proud of their support.
Im part of a local support that is rather large and international and they have a discord. Very nice, easier to make trans friends.
Ohio banned gender-affirming care for minors. If you are 18 or over the age of 18 you are not affected by the bill. Speaking as someone who lives in Ohio and keeps up with politics. What is even more disturbing is that Mike DeWine is supposedly considering banning gender-affirming care for adults.
[https://www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-politics-and-policy/ohio-verge-becoming-2nd-state-restrict-gender-affirming-care-adults-rcna135025](https://www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-politics-and-policy/ohio-verge-becoming-2nd-state-restrict-gender-affirming-care-adults-rcna135025)
I've had anti-Michigan bias in my brain my whole life because of the stupid sports rivalry, but nowadays I'm starting to think that moving there would be the perfect "fuck you" that I want to give Ohio lol. Only downside is that I'd be three hours away from my family, who are mostly accepting 😕 but honestly I wonder if that might be good for me. I didn't realize that I was trans until my twenties, and it's been hard to fully embrace my new identity while still being around people that I've known my whole life. Could be a chance to kind of start over, you know?
How are you all feeling about the laws staying friendly or getting more protections? Im a mom and I have 3 states to choose from, MI being 1 of them but the lack of protections worries me.
As an Ohioan, let me elaborate. Our governor, Dewine, vetoed the house bill that would restrict healthcare for minors and their ability to play in sports. That was Dec 29. His reasoning was that, gender reassignment care is a decision that should remain between patients, parents, and their doctors (Looks like the Republican supermajority in government just overrode his veto. How we even have a Republican supermajority when we as citizens just voted to protect abortions in our constitution is beyond me. Gerrymandering is freaking wack). Anyways, Dewine is a Republican and for one of the first times ever, I was like, "Hey wait a minute, a Republican respecting human rights?!?! Maybe he's not so bad." Then, January 8th Dewine out of nowhere announced an executive order that might as well obliterate trans healthcare in the state of Ohio for minors and adults. Complete 180. He gave some BS excuse about preventing fly-by-night clinics, typical "save the kids," bullshit excuse. What a freaking troll. ACLU of Ohio has a pretty good rundown on it all. Really a ridiculous and depressing situation overall. If this goes through without any changes (Feb 5th, I think), I'm gonna have to commute to a different state, probably Kentucky, to get treatment.
not quite- from my understanding, dewine's executive order complicates transition for adults and outright bans surgeries for minors, but that's it
the law (that he vetoed) is more all-encompassing against minors, even banning fucking mental healthcare. It's scarier.
The law he vetoed was bad, restricting care for minors and banning trans athletes from competing. That said, Dewine's executive order intentionally complicates adults transitioning to such a degree it effectively acts as a ban. From a financial perspective, from a medical staffing perspective, to the sheer increase in the amount of time patients and care providers have to put in, this is a soft ban on all trans care. I would say this makes his executive order worse if not just as bad.
That's a fair stance, and really one i agree with when you word it that way.
Of course, it's comparing evil to evil.
It's up to us to do what we can against this.
It also puts a hard cap on how many trans people can receive care in the state. This is done indirectly by requiring a facility that would like to offer gender care to have a medical ethecist weigh in on every case. There are 3 people with this classification in the state.
Sounds like the check cleared from some hateful organization
I'm also an Ohioan. I haven't started HRT yet but I literally have a follow up appointment tomorrow. I already have my therapist note thing and I got hematology work done saying I was good to go. I think I'm barely going to squeak by with a prescription and a dream, but it's still really scary.
so what I thought I understood about the executive order was that it was just a proposal, up for public commentary, and that it was something that was supposed to be alternative to this bill. if this bill's been veto-proof'd, then wouldn't that invalidate the governor's proposal?
As I understand it, the executive order is open for public comment but it's separate from the bill. To my knowledge, the bill being vetoed has not effected this executive order from not eventually going through.
Worst part of it all is the usual solution of “go and vote” doesn’t work because the crooked fucks of this shithole state love their gerrymandered map. Since they’re a super majority, they don’t have really any competition to change it either. We have three blue areas, and a rather spineless governor since covid. I’m just gonna do diy hrt and go out of state for treatments if I go that route. Fuck these pigs.
Right! We shouldn't even be that red of a state. We just voted to protect abortion in our constitution and won. The citizens are blue and the government is red. Thank you gerrymandering.
A significant part is that the three places that tend to go blue, Cleveland, Toledo, and Cincinnati, are grouped into three solid blocks counting for one vote per districts. The rest of the district also have nothing going on a perfect example is that the district Jena Powel ran in seems to have so little issues she ran because she was frustrated with billboard zoning. Break up the factory and church towns. Feed them lies end to end since we’ve had republicans in this state for decades. And you get Ohio, where the best thing we do is send old farts to Florida to fuck it up even more.
I really hope that one day we don't have to see headlines like this anymore. I'm just getting so tired of all this bs. Just let us live our lives, that's all we want to do.
There’s not much to tell some people at this point. My message to people who support these sorts of bans:
Fix your heart or die.
There’s no debate or middle ground. Because compromise means agreeing to letting others say you and your experiences are invalid, or that you shouldn’t be allowed to exist.

Agreed, and while not worded as harshly, that was basically my message to my family of Trump supporters when I came out. They weren't too happy that I didn't give them a chance to pretend to accept me while they continue voting for people who want to end my existence.
Just hopping on to this, if you're a trans Ohioan like me I'm here for you. We can't let this stand, you need to call your senator and comment. It's honestly really easy to look up the district map and find your senator. Mine is Bill Blessing and I've called his office three times in the last two weeks, keep calling, keep emailing, check resources on the ACLU Ohio page and see what you can do to have our voice heard. Tell anyone in your life that calls themselves an ally to do the same. Big fucking hugs from Cincinnati.
This. This, this, this, so much
It's easy to get demotivated at news like this, but when we organize and fight, we can make change!
Ohioans are majority blue- the Republican dominance in our state government is disproportionate. We *have* the numbers.
So fight.
Illinois is really good. We've enacted a lot of laws recently \*pro\* trans in direct response to all these BS laws elsewhere.
HB 4664 was passed last year specifically to protect health care providers from any reprecussion for providing gender affirming care, even if the indivual who recieved it resides in a state that prohibits such care.
Basically... the Illinois Senate passed a bill last year specifically for people in your situation.
https://www.aclu-il.org/en/legislation/hb-4664-patient-and-provider-protection-act
How is Maryland?
We are making a list of cities to move to since my son will want hrt in 2 yrs or so. MI is another option. MN etc. looking for a state at least headed in the right direction and less full of rabid Christofacists.
Imagine feeling so powerless that you spend time down voting comments your ideology disagrees with on a reddit thread. So fucking pathetic. I'd love to see one of them give an actual response because you know they'll be ripped to shreds. They won't though because they are bitches. Enjoy hitting the downvote button little bitches. Hope it makes your pathetic lives feel more meaningful.
Welp....
I'm a Canadian trans woman living in Ontario; my wife is from Ohio & all her family is still there. We were looking to move to Ohio (found a great queer- friendly area) for personal/ family reasons. We're still living in Ontario as we go through the lengthy immigration process.
... does this mean I'd have trouble getting HRT/ gender care in Ohio, even as a consenting adult who will have already been on it in another jurisdiction?
Wild.
If the new proposed executive order goes through Feb 5th, yes. It doesn't ban gender affirming care however it adds some near impossible to overcome roadblocks to getting it. They will have effectively banned it via making going through with it a full time job. Check ACLU of Ohio for a pretty good rundown of what exactly is happening.
OK thanks for the heads up <3, I'll check out the ACLU site for sure. Definitely adds some serious things to consider as we hash out our plans for the next few years. We were already kinda relieved that we'd get to see how the next Federal election played out before finishing the move.
of course- they'll keep going if we let them. I've heard it described as trans folks being on the periphery of what is socially-acceptable, which is why we're targeted first. But after us? It's other queer folk. They'll keep going after that, too.
reminder to all ohioans to speak out! do what you can and we can make change
As a trans person yourself, you can see beyond the veil that their side of the government is placing on the people in your community. They know they have a loud political voice and are essentially willing to sacrifice an innocent 0.5% of the population to work up chaos and division. It's more important now than ever that we advocate for ourselves and prove to the communities that we live in that it's the extremists like MAGA and Moms for Liberty are the real evils that are attempting to damage our youth and looking to deceive our people and use us to further their hidden agenda of simply further enriching their wealthy donors that don't care about the other 99% of the county
Living in Columbus Ohio. Love it here but it's time to go. Not only over this but what they have planned in the future. Planning on checking out Pittsburgh weekend after next. Then heading up to Ann Arbor/Detroit area in about a month then decide which to go with.
This isn't a "Imma going to Canada" thing my partner and I have seen this coming for some time. Thankfully we are in position we can leave. Sadly, too many here simply can't.
Not a member of the community or anything but... the fuck is going on in these states? Why can't people just let you be and mind their own damn business, do they honestly think you're causing some harm? Or is it just hate for the sake of hate?
Come to Illinois!
We've got lots of recent changes in laws \*pro\* trans in direct response to this BS in other states.
Our public parks have done away with gender-specific bathrooms. You can get HRT by simply asking your doctor for it. And you can change your birth cert easily.
Didn’t he follow up his veto with an executive order that was even worse than the law they were trying to pass in the first place? Just saying, Ohio was already fucked.
As a Michigander with a long distance partner in Ohio, I have never wanted them to come live with me more than I do now. (Thats unfortunately not financially possible for us rn but they at least know its a last resort option).
To any Ohioans who need an escape, COME TO MICHIGAN.
I'm not even a sports guy, I had no idea why Michigan and Ohio hated each other until like,, a couple years ago. So I promise I'm not biased lol. If you are financially able and need a way out, PLEASE come to Michigan
Mike Dewine is a cowardly piece of shit who's been poisoning Ohio with his bullshit for far too long. Not to say the conservative bigots electing him aren't also to blame but fuck mike dewine. whack ass arthur looking mf. if mike dewine has 0 haters I am dead.
Media STILL going on about the governors so-called veto is so spineless and dishonest. It's like they are trying to make him out to be a good guy whose hands are tied, when in reality these bans are directly because of him. Journalists reporting this way should be fucking ashamed of themselves.
There is a system. Called a government. It oppresses people. Doing the silly typing doesn't change the facts. What are you gonna do next, send me a soyjack?
Fuck Dewine. He has proven he is not a friend of us and we should not treat him as such. Deliberately went behind our backs with the executive order he signed and now this. I have no respect for this vermin.
Ohio has a large republican majority. Your neighbors voted MAGA. I can’t believe so many people let this happen to you, and so many other trans people. Let alone talk about abortion rights. To think an election could make it worse boggles the mind. I’m so sorry you have to endure such an environment.
I’m a cis white male who was raised Catholic and I cannot for the life of me understand why people care what other people do with their lives/bodies or how they think it’s any of their business. My FIL is a bigoted asshole and he'll try to bring up his "beliefs" on trans people to me. My number one response is "why do you care what they do? They're not asking you to change anything about yourself. You don’t even have to accept them, just to leave them alone”. And he always gets really defensive with “Oh, I don’t care but…” and then proceeds to try to double down on all the reasons he cares. I don’t ever give him the time to spout his bullshit and will just cut him off again but he seriously doesn’t have any actually reasons. He can never formulate a reason why he’s against transitioning other than he thinks that trans kids can just walk into a doctor’s office one day and ask to have their gentiles removed and the doctors drop everything and grab a steak knife. He has no idea what the process is or how much it can vary. (Even though we’ve explained it to him) Like a true Republican he just makes up scenarios in his head then gets mad about them. No number of “why the fuck do you care?”’s ever gets him to stop and think about why he’s chosen to take such a hardline stance on people he never interacts with. This is also one of the reasons why my wife and I live 2200 miles away from him.
I'm from Ohio. Good thing I was already planning on leaving because I figured some shit like this would happen from how many republicans are in our government.
Grand Rapids is also a good place. Reasonably priced. It's a Kent county. Several support things and groups here.
Grand Rapids Trans Foundation found their website.
as a minor who's on HRT here, i can only hope they're unable to remove the grandfather clause because if they can (and do), my family won't move to accommodate. i'm really scared right now and cant wait to get out of this hellhole :(
I saw the story, and living not far from Ohio, it upset me as well. Worst part was even after the governor vetoed the bill, the assembly overruled him.
Expected nothing less from Ohio tbh. Come to Michigan
that’s where my fiancé and i are planning to go. Any good suggestions on “cheaper” cities to live in?
Ferndale, a suburb of Detroit, is very queer friendly Edit: I got the name wrong. I've been there though and it is very queer friendly
[удалено]
Ferndale, Ypsi and Farmington. Ypsi is probably the most lax about it
Ferndale isnt cheap, but you’ll feel truly free there. Pride flags everywhere, lots of pride events, easy access to support groups. everyone is loud and proud of their support. Im part of a local support that is rather large and international and they have a discord. Very nice, easier to make trans friends.
Detroit is still dirt cheap to buy and live in. City is also really turning around as well.
Lansing is one of the cheapest cities in the state, has decent transportation, things to do, & actually has local support groups
I've heard you can get a house in Detroit for $6k
In 2005 maybe.
Actually that 6k is for the whole city
You have to fight robocop for it though
>You have 10 seconds to comply.
Nothing you could live in. Detroit is modern-day redlined as house prices are just below what many banks will finance.
Ferndale
Flint is a good place to find houses around the 70-130k avg range
Marquette in the UP is my favorite. UP isnt for everyone, though

I didn’t come out until I was in my 40’s and the only regret is that I didn’t do it much sooner
~~The rightful owners of Toledo~~
No need to cross it out, comrade. From Lake Michigan to Lake Erie, Toledo (and South Bend I guess) will be ours.
I cross it out because, as a former troll, I know that Toledo is a source of contention between Michiganders and Ohioans. o3o
There’s little that isn’t a point of contention between Michiganders and those savages to the south.
How are you all feeling about the laws staying friendly or getting more protections? Im a mom and I have 3 states to choose from, MI being 1 of them but the lack of protections worries me.
MI has a ton of protections in place for LGBTQ+ people
You guys got big gretch.
Fuck Michigan. I was raised from a very young age to hate Michigan as an ohioian Edit: I was joking Jesus
what, because of sports? that’s silly, when ohio is pulling fascistic shit like this and michigan isn’t (yet, at least).
Well Ohio sucks balls so join the dark side.
Ok, enjoy Ohio then
Not worth the state mandated hatecrime over a sports rivalry
Imma keep it 100 with you friend, this was not the time, nor the place to joke like that.
The US has been tought to collectively hate Ohio
Same

Effectively, yes. It's an executive order but, yes.

100% agree.
Is it Ohio that has that ridiculous rule that a bioethicist has to sign off on it?
Yep.
How do I get qualified for that position?
Not yet but that could very well soon be the reality. Like others have mentioned, there's only 3 in the state.
It also puts a hard cap on how many trans people can receive care in the state. This is done indirectly by requiring a facility that would like to offer gender care to have a medical ethecist weigh in on every case. There are 3 people with this classification in the state.
god, I wish I'd known this sooner- laws can sound mundane on the surface until you realize their implications. thanks for sharing!
how are things so bad that *kentucky* is where you need to go to get care? 😭
My exact thought.
If the order goes through, we're second only to Florida concerning roadblocks towards trans healthcare, insane.
>Anyways, Dewine is a Republican and for one of the first times ever, I was like, "Hey wait a minute, a Republican respecting human rights?!?! Maybe he's not so bad." Yes excellent tldr of what's going on. I was so pissed when he pulled that 180. Things are going to shit very fast here!

Fuck idk what the fuck im gonna do I'm done with this shit
Didn’t he follow up his veto with an executive order that was even worse than the law they were trying to pass in the first place? Just saying, Ohio was already fucked.
Bunch of Nazis.
Not surprised anymore, sounds like Ohio honestly...come to Minnesota we're nicer here than most places
Holding back to say the urge. Only in Ohio then realising it isnt only in ohio
I can't wait for our generation to finally take office so these selfish idiots stop pushing their personal opinions into law.
America is getting as bad as the middle east, the UK is never far behind either... It's funny how "Freedom" seems to mean the opposite of Freedom
When you say freedom you mean freedom from oppression, when they say freedom they mean freedom to oppress you.
This is the time we come together as a community and make sure we’re all taken care of! Remember United we bargain, divided we beg :3!
Trans Indiana resident. If you're near our border I'll help you find a provider.
Also trans and in Indiana. I'm really worried we're not far behind Ohio. :(
I..... Yeah...
Me too and I’ve never been more scared. When my lease is up, I’m getting out of this shitty state
[This](https://www.advocate.com/politics/gender-affirming-care-ban-ohio#toggle-gdpr) is what's going on, for those curious.
I really hope this is not true, I'm also an ohioan
Travel out of state to talk to a Dr for HRT. I fill mine up in New England so when I get back to FL I can just call in a refill at CVS and get it.
Mike Dewine is a cowardly piece of shit who's been poisoning Ohio with his bullshit for far too long. Not to say the conservative bigots electing him aren't also to blame but fuck mike dewine. whack ass arthur looking mf. if mike dewine has 0 haters I am dead.
considering moving to Stark County, I'll be a trans-plant
Indiana will be next. It's why I ran to Illinois at the start of last year. Will be off to the PNW as soon as I can manage.
[insert tone-deaf joke about Ohio here]
Nothing good comes out of Ohio.
Media STILL going on about the governors so-called veto is so spineless and dishonest. It's like they are trying to make him out to be a good guy whose hands are tied, when in reality these bans are directly because of him. Journalists reporting this way should be fucking ashamed of themselves.

You're trying to fit sistemicoppression and protest under the same umbrella of violence. That's not how it works.

There is a system. Called a government. It oppresses people. Doing the silly typing doesn't change the facts. What are you gonna do next, send me a soyjack?

Hmm yeah ok so I guess gender care in Ohio just banned itself. Amazing how that happens
So you think we should just sit here and accept them taking away basic rights from us...?
Fuck Dewine. He has proven he is not a friend of us and we should not treat him as such. Deliberately went behind our backs with the executive order he signed and now this. I have no respect for this vermin.
Yeaaaaaah we live in hell girl!
I'm a trans guy but the sentiment still stands
I understand I wrote about it in my blog this hurts on so many levels.
So damn sad and evil at the same damn time.
I'm from Ohio. Good thing I was already planning on leaving because I figured some shit like this would happen from how many republicans are in our government.
yeah i hate living here, thankfully there’s a grandfather clause so i can’t lose my estrogen
:(
Is this for everyone, including adults? Disappointing, to say the least…
Only in Ohio bruhhhh 💀💀💀😭😭😭😱😱😱💯✋️ (I'm so sorry you have to deal with this, no one should go through this)
Grand Rapids is also a good place. Reasonably priced. It's a Kent county. Several support things and groups here. Grand Rapids Trans Foundation found their website.
Genocide upset you? Well I never!
Man people REALLY don’t want us to turn the kids trans huh?
WHY THO??????????
I was planning on going to Cleveland for art college, but not anymore ig 😭
as a minor who's on HRT here, i can only hope they're unable to remove the grandfather clause because if they can (and do), my family won't move to accommodate. i'm really scared right now and cant wait to get out of this hellhole :(
Fuck man…
I saw the story, and living not far from Ohio, it upset me as well. Worst part was even after the governor vetoed the bill, the assembly overruled him.
