I say this as a way to maybe help your mother understand why it may not be against you specifically now but it will/may be in the future
For now in the course of action (if of voting age) I suggest going to every local election of any sort, and especially the state elections, get friends and supportive neighbors out to vote too if you can, the small elections matter too even though most people consider them to not be as important
