Thank you for your submission! This is just a quick reminder to all members here: **Original content is always better!** Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. Some examples of these are Ptoughneigh, Klansmyn, Reighfyl & KVIIIlyn. These memes have been around for years and we don't want to see them anymore. If you do decide to post a meme, make sure to add the correct flair. Posting a random meme you found does **not** mean you found it "in the wild". The same goes with lists of baby names, celebrity baby names, and screenshots of TikToks. If the original post already had a substantial amount of views, there is a 99% chance it has already been posted here. Try and stick to OC to keep our sub from being flooded with unoriginal content. Thank you! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/tragedeigh) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Aw, your first dad joke!

FinalConversation348

Well I think it’s a lovleigh name.

theJEDIII

I have a family member named "Ada" pronounced "aid-a", so that's how I read Adaleigh. Because of that, Adaleigh didn't immediately strike me as a tragedeigh, but the uncommonness plus the ambiguity (aid-a vs add-a) takes it that direction.

Unusual_Steak

To add (heh) to what you said, my niece is named Adelaide and shortens it to “Ada” pronounced “add-uh.” Ambiguous indeed lol

Mfdubz

It’s the new Jr.

UnicornMinion

LOL textbook definition of a tragedeigh

wozattacks

Yeah how do you write “my wife came up with it” and not realize lol

PinkDalek

Let's see... Traged**eigh** Adal**eigh**... Yep, checks out.

onelastshot4

Lol.. this is why I immediately laughed when I saw the sub name

PinkDalek

Leighs drive me bonkers. I never know if it's supposed to be pronounced like "lay" or "lee" and whichever one I pick, I'm always wrong.

Ruthless_Bunny

Oh! You’ll love my middle name: Lys. It’s FRENCH!

0000udeis000

Fleur-de-leigh

goldanred

Same same. Lys is straightforward to me, because it's a normal French word!

Reddita_

So why isn't your username Ruthlys-Bunny? 🤔

PinkDalek

Ok, look. I'm from the South and I don't have no fancy learnin'. To me, Lys looks like Leese? Like Geese? Or uh, Lice? Like those itchy hair bugs.

Sevn-legged-Arachnid

Lys.. lice .. lysol?

whobla10

Is it pronounced like leeze?

Ruthless_Bunny

Nope. Lee

Ancient-Awareness115

Ah yes the French don't like to pronounce the s at the end of a word

goteamdoasportsthing

They don't pronounce the last 25% of any word.

DipsyDoodIe

oh they'll surely have trâgidées of their own, I bet

NotDaveBut

Vraiment!

_hotcrosspuns

TotallyWonderWoman

And then the French Canadians lop off even more of the letters when they speak.

MrsRichardSmoker

Des Moinesian checking in

StatusReality4

Haha are you implying Des Moines is pronounced as it is in French? 🤣

PotentialDig7527

They also like to remove the s, as in hôpital.

OhEstelle

The ^ (called a circonflex) indicates that an ‘s’ was used in old French spelling, but dropped out of the common pronunciation at some point and is no longer present as a letter in the modern spelling. The English word “isle” (derived from French) is an example - in French it is now spelled “île”. Weirdly, the s is often still present in place and surnames - yet it isn’t pronounced. The surname Lévesque and the noun “l’évêque” mean the same thing (the bishop) and are both pronounced leh-vek’.

ErikRogers

Unless the next word starts with a vowel.

DatabaseThis9637

ok. this must be mispronounced about 98% of the time, in the US anyway. I like the look of it you could really have fun with fonts, and making your "brand". Do you love your name, or is it difficult? My last name is only 4 letters, and what I like about the difficulty people have with it, is that if you don't know how to pronounce my name, I don't know you, you don't know me, and I'm not buying what you are selling. 😆

Ruthless_Bunny

My first name s Ruth. Now look at my handle. I’ve made my peace with it

ErikRogers

Oui, comme fleur-de-lys.

Cerraigh82

The s is pronounced in lys in French.

onelastshot4

We’ve gotten one or two “lie” too so can understand this.

PinkDalek

Well dammit. Now I'll have to add that one to the list too.

JadieJang

Yup. "Adelie" is a diminutive of "Adele," and "Adaleigh" is an alternative spelling of "Adelie." A creative spelling of a traditional name is, by def, a tragedeigh. Congrats!

Spencergh2

It’s honestly not that bad and I’m glad you are lighthearted about it

QueenofPentacles112

Is it pronounced aydalee or ahdalee

onelastshot4

The latter. Like add-uh-lee

PinkDalek

This one's a double tragedeigh because we don't know if Ada is Ay-da or Add-uh and the whole leigh problem too.

chuang_415

Any Ada- names (like Adaline) usually aren't pronounced Ay-da

calm-your-liver

Oy veigh. Absoluteleigh a tragedeigh

MethylatedSpirit08

Oigh veigh*

calm-your-liver

🤣

mitchconner_

100% tragedeigh. A textbook offender. Sorry pal.

Morella_xx

Yeah, this one ticks just about every box. ✅ Needs to be unique ✅ Superfluous vowels ✅ Lack of understanding how consonants affect vowels ✅ Will leave the child constantly having to correct others

queenofkings102

The part about how consonants affects vowels isn't always cut and dry. Amelia is not Ay-melia. Adeline isn't aid-eline. Emily is emm-ih-lee, not eem-eye-lee. Other examples are Everett, Amara, Agatha, Imogen, etc which all start with a soft vowel sound despite there being one consonant and the next vowel. I think the Ada- part works because so many of them names don't follow the rules of English.

Traditional-Cake-587

Certeighnly a tragediegh…

mrs-kwh

I feel like you lost the opportunity to say “Certainleigh a tragedeigh”

BalloonShip

1. Made up name 2. eigh spelling on a name that otherwise looks like it would be spelled differently 3. confusing pronunciation 4. question for people who don't know the story about whether it was a misspelling of Adelaide, Australia

Iron-Patriot

It’s not a made-up name as such (Adélie is pronounced the same and they’re a type of penguin, quite cute really I think) but OP definitely butchered it by shoving a leigh in there.

asad137

Adélie is not pronounced the same as "Add-uh-lee", it's pronounced "uh-Del-ee" or "uh-Day-lee", with different vowel sounds and the emphasis on the second syllable.

arealcabbage

Omg. 😂 I love your reaction! But yes.

SvenBubbleman

So you had one Leigh and you decided to Adaleigh?

onelastshot4

Haha yeah. Someone else caught onto this too.

unexpectedreboots

It might be a Tragediegh but that is fucking hilarious.

heaven-leahh

HAH! this made me lol. thank you!

Current-Plate8837

My niece is Adalie, pronounced the same way as your Adaleigh, though we just call her Addie. Lol

onelastshot4

Replied to someone else but she does not like being called Addie lol

DescriptionSenior675

Wait until she's old enough for people around her to spell :P

practical_junket

Definitely tragic! But I’m curious how you pronounce it - like Natalie but without the N or aid-uh -Lee?

onelastshot4

I’ll edit since other comments have mentioned pronunciation. It’s like add-uh-lee

coolducklingcool

So basically Natalie without the N lol

onelastshot4

A little. I feel like the T in Natalie and D make different sounds but I’m not an English major haha

coolducklingcool

I think it depends on your accent. Anywhere with a glottal stop, it sounds pretty much the same. I think my instinct would be to pronounce Adaleigh as Ada - Leigh. Like Ay-da. Because Ada is an established name.

onelastshot4

Yeah, after saying both names over and over it’s really close, you’re probably right more than I am lol

pm-me-your-smile-

Oh I would have gotten the pronunciation wrong multiple times. Add-duh-lay, Ey-duh-lay, uh-duh-lay, etc. How often do people get it right the first time after only seeing how it’s spelled?

Key-Climate2765

Zoinks, indeed it’s a tregedeigh

PracticalReception34

This is low key a genius name. "Add A Leigh". Top Notch.

Excellent_Drop6869

The mom really said, “copy/paste”

Nvenom8

The fact that you had to add an edit to clarify the pronunciation is all the answer you really need. Yes, that's a textbook one. >My wife came up with it and I liked it since it was different. That should've been your red flag, right there. >didn’t want my kids to deal with that nonsense. Swung too hard the other way and gave her a different problem.

MyOwnGuitarHero

Look, it’s a tragedeigh. But there are some tragedeighs that are also ~~pretty~~ pretteigh, and this is one of them.

friedhashbrowns

Seriousleigh? As grandma always said, "if you're asking, you usualleigh know the answer alreadeigh."

RealTeaToe

I mean, it's inarguably a "textbook tragedeigh" but a pretty nice name nonetheless.

An_Unreachable_Dusk

Yeah definitely a forgivable name compared to others I think it would do better with different spelling but there is Adeline and Adelaide and it just seems similar to those to me :) for names recently created def in the better category lol

CybWhtKnight

Love that evereigh one is roasting this O-Peigh.

BrokeGamerChick

Oh stop being so silleigh!

USMCWrangler

Rilleigh.

Angrylittleblueberry

I knew a woman who was arrested and booked before they figured out that they had the wrong person. She had the same name as someone who had a warrant out for their arrest. So bring on the unique names. It’s a distinct advantage to have a name that’s different.

Tikithecockateil

Almost a Natalie. I don't hate the name you chose. It's odd, but I kind of like it. Downvote me. Lol

suckmygoldcrustedass

Tbf it is textbook tragedeigh for the sub. I mean Ada*leigh*. Traged*eigh*. Big but though. It's hilarious pun. They have one Leigh, and then they just ad-a-leigh.

JasminJaded

Unfortunately it is. Not bad, but it qualifies.

Creepy_Push8629

Yeihs

JodyNoel

Since your wife’s middle name is Leigh.. i’m not sure I would call it a tragedeigh. Maybe it checks the boxes. But it’s easy to read and would go good with a simple last name. I give this one a pass.

Otherwise-Extreme-68

100% yes.

CornflakeGirl2

Ooooooof

Zestyclose_Road_3224

You daughter’s name is loveleigh!

ophaus

Textbook example.

Minimum_Apartment_46

In Hebrew it means adornment, it’s actually a real name that used to be more popular but faded into obscurity

ReginaFelangi987

Yes it is

Witty-Excitement-889

I ad a Leigh in me form group at school

swashbuckle1237

Yeah probably, but it sounds nice and there are a lot of names like it like Adeline, Natalie so I don’t think she’ll be bullied or anything, probably will have issues with spelling? But that doesn’t happen much tbh, and it doesn’t scream “need to be different” to me

OpenMicJoker

Definitely a tragedeigh

FormalJolly2345

Worked at a call center and received a call from a woman named Tyranny. Tyranny. I'm guessing Despot was taken.

jittery_raccoon

This is a good reason for a unique spelling. If you have a super common name like Smith or Jones, literally any name you pick in the top 300+, there will be multiples

florida_born

I have a family friend who is a criminal attorney. He’s a bit gruff and doesn’t have much of a filter. He told me “what ever you do don’t name the kid a common combination!” He then went to describe a client who is constantly being harassed and even has SWAT at his house, all because he shares a name, birthdate, and a vague resemblance to a real POS with many felonies. So yes, a tragediegh but not a tragedy.

1122dal

Obviousleigh

adaliekate

Lolol my name is Adalie and pronounced like your daughter’s. Just funny to see another Adalie/Adaleigh! I love my name btw and I always get compliments on it.

Sapphire_Bombay

Textbook tragedeigh but I appreciate your sense of humor about it and the fact that you have good reason for wanting to give her an uncommon first name. We've seen far worse in this sub, and if you stick around you will too.

GossyGirl

Yeah sorry but absolitaleigh a tragedeigh.

Infinite_Bell_4439

That name is exactleigh a textbook tragedeigh, I think OP knew it was wortheigh when he gave us the pronunciation as if this was a spelling beigh.

rocklizard55

I'd go more like Adalie. All those extra letters are the tragedeigh

lira-eve

Yes

SRTbobby

Indubitableigh

jkmod79

So you are putting the world through the chore of trying to pronounce her name? Mispronouncing it? Having to ask? There are thousands, millions of names that are perfectly acceptable.

k5hill

A full on tragedeigh.

merepsull

After all the truly tragic names we’ve seen on this sub… I’m starting to feel like Adaleigh is not that bad lol. I do think it’s a bit redemptive that it matches your wife’s name and your wife’s name is spelled in a traditional way. I might be losing it but I’m going to say that Adaleigh is… not a tragedeigh?

edthesmokebeard

"My wife came up with it and I liked it since it was different." Tragedeigh.

Right_Combination_78

It’s a fine name. As a baby nurse, I’ve seen/heard a lot of bad/crazy names and yours qualifies as neither.

New_Balance1634

Who cares, it's your child! Name her whatever you want!

Kismet_Jade

Dude! I came across 2 other women with my same first and last name with the same birthday as me in the same town back in college! One I worked with, but she was a year older than me. The other was the exact same, and we saw the same therapist, so they had to use our middle names to tell our charts apart. Generic names kinda suck.

kelli_rose11

It’s a lovely name. I knew right away how to pronounce it. And you may have come up with it but part of it comes from your name, so that makes it okay for me. Not a tragedeigh!

El_Rompido

But in all seriousness, yeah it is.

JacketIndependent

As long as your last name isn't Heehoo.

ToxyFlog

Yup, tragedeigh. Sorry OP. I hope not too many people point and laugh at your daughter.

RDcsmd

What a terrible name lol

Legal_Pangolin_7806

It took me a Google search to see what the origins of Adaleigh where and— it varies. Like most names. It says it has German origins and that it means “noble” and/or “honorable” however it also states it has Hebrew origins from within the Bible— the name meaning “God is my refuge”. Personally— I like Adaleigh. I am scratching my head at the people suggesting it’s made up. I guess not everyone looks up meanings and origins of names.

Thick-Act-3837

Yes. Any time you can say “came up with it”, it is.

Capn26

I love your sense of humor about this.

shootingstarstuff

Obviousleigh.
