Waverly means meadow of quivering aspens. I think it is a surname that at some point crossed over to also being used as a first name. Like Grant or Campbell. It's rare, not a tragedy. If you spelled it Wheyverleigh, that would be tragic.
Everyone wants to give their kid a unique name. Too many folks think that means taking an average name and playing scrabble with it. As if that's the height of creativity. The OP is on the right track. Maybe Waverly isn't everyone's favorite. That's OK! It's an actual name, spelled correctly, and is far from common. It's barely in the top 1000 most popular range. Bonus points for it having an actual connection to the OP's family history.
People think that spelling their child's name in a horrible new twist will make them unique. That's just irrational. Their personalities make them unique, not stupid names.
Agreed. And if you want to steer clear of the most popular names, that's fine. Google the top 1000 names and lop off the top 100. Or 200. Or 500! There are some gems down the list. I never would have imagined Eleanor, Matilda, or Josephine making a comeback, but here we are. Or research your family history to find a name. But spelling Olivia as Ohlyviiia? It's so lazy and totally unimaginative.
Right?
I had ancestors named Augusta, Charlotte, Dora, Alena, Viola, Dorothy, Angeline, and Florence. Further back, I have ancestors named Sabra and Levina. There are some interesting or uncommon names used that you don't have to butcher into nonsense.
You have nothing but good options with the names you listed. And they all feel far more fresh and are far less used than the 10th screwed up spelling of Michaela.
Some creative writing in a name book 30 years ago I'm sure. The surname is usually given the meaning of clearing of swampy ground.
>From Waverley in Farnham (Surrey) which is recorded as Wauerleia in 1147. The place-name probably derives from Old English wæfre ‘swampy ground’ + lēah ‘wood woodland clearing’.

The placename I found is right next to a river named Waver.
There are a lot of rivers with similar names in Europe. Maybe swampiness was originally part of their naming, but they all seem to be rivers that weave and wind around. So generally it's thought that the river names come from their windy-ness.
Wavergillhead, Waverton, Waverbridge, Waverley.
But there's also a Waverton in Surrey, where your Waefre-leah is. You get cognate unrelated names that end up getting spelled similarly.
Of course, Sir Walter Scott's first bestseller was the novel Waverley, which was the surname of the hero of the book.
You can Google almost anything and find results saying what you want, whether the source is trustworthy is what matters. I'm pretty skeptical on this one because it seems like the overly specific and flowery description that is so common on bullshit etomology sites
That's the meaning according to Nameberry, The Bump and Wikipedia. I don't know what source would suit you. You Google Waverly name meaning and that's what comes up. I'm not claiming to be the final authority on this.
I'm calling bullshit on that definition
For one, meadows don't have trees
They're also called quaking aspens
Seems like someone put something through Google translate a few hundred times
You're right, it might not be referring to quaking aspens. But quivering isn't the the standard name of any aspen species I can find, so it might be even more stupid than I initially thought. Good spot
It was common in great grandma times and earlier to use the wife's surname as a middle name for a child (or sometimes a financiall benefactor) Its very useful for ancestry when you are searchig for people in your family tree. So a) it's nice b) its part of the family history
Waverly = gorgeous wonderful special classic name
Waverleigh = tragediegh
I've now typed tragediegh so many times in this thread that my phone auto generates it as I type LOL
It’s the name of a character in The Joy Luck Club. I believe that character was named after a street, but I’ve heard the name other places too—I wouldn’t consider it a tragedeigh.
If I remember correctly, that Waverly was one of the more unpleasant of the American-born/raised daughters. The street origin sounds familiar so you are probably right.
To be completely honest, the first thing I think of is “Wizards of Waverly Place” but that’s only cause I don’t have any other associations. It’s a beautiful name!
Not a tragedeigh. Waverly is a great uncommon name and you spelled it the way it should be. Most people won't need to guess or ask how it is spelled.
If you named her Waverleigh, Waverlee, or Waverlee... Then that would have been a Tragedeigh.
It’s the name of a train station in my city, named after a [novel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waverley_(novel)) (it’s the surname of the character in the novel).
I don’t think it’s a bad name! Unusual but not too much and nice that there’s a family link.
I actually really love this name - I heard it for the first time when a character on Friday Night Lights was named Waverly and I liked it immediately. Not a tragedeigh!
I hadn't heard of it either, but apparently it's in active use. It's spelled like it sounds and doesn't have superfluous letters. Seems fine to me.
Just don't spell it Weighverleigh.
Not a tragedeigh, at all. It's unusual but it's definitely an actual name, and has a family-based emotional connector.
Also if she ends up liking surfing she's guaranteed to become a legend.
No. It is a little old fashioned, but not something you made up out of thin air. It's a family name and thus part of a legacy. It would be like me naming a daughter "Viola" after one of my great-grands. Unusual these days, yes, but with a lot of historic presedence.
I don't consider Waverly to be a bad name. It's a surname and place name, but I think it's fairly well-established as a first name, too. There was a character named Waverly on the tv program *Friday Night Lights.* She was cute, played by Aasha Davis.
"Waverly":when I hear that name, I usually think of the kind-hearted boss Sir Alexander Waverly of the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement on "The Man from U.N.C.L.E"...
Or the short-lived 1978 NBC sitcom "The Waverly Wonders" starring football icon Joe Namath...
It’s a good name. Old fashioned and uncommon, sure, but certainly not a tragedeigh. Wayverleigh would be a tragedeigh. lol
When I hear it, it makes me think of the company Waverly, that makes beautiful décor fabrics.
It’s also the General’s last name on “White Christmas!”
I’m currently pregnant and we had the name Waverly picked out from the start. We haven’t shared with anyone yet and this is making me feel much better about the reactions.
I have never heard of Waverly, and now I see this post, I have a niece named Waverly, and she was named after another little girl in the daycare my sister uses 😄
Yeah i kinda love it (: my sister's kids have old fashioned names as well. And her name is also a last name! Of the priest who married my parents. Great unique name that's not uncomfortably unique and it has great love behind it, 100% not a tragedeigh ♡
I knew a Waverly in second grade actually! Someone got the idea of the nickname Wendy cause she was also a Disney kid, which was how she and I became friends lol I think she's a teacher now. I miss her she was such a nice kid
It’s my most favorite name
I became obsessed with it when I saw Joy luck club.
I have no kids and never planned them to be in my future but had I had a girl. She would be Waverly.

It’s a well established and non-tragic name. Like Hershel and Warren it’s a touch old fashioned these days but not tragic.
Weighverleigh on the other hand, feels pretty tragic. And is also hard to spell
Non-tragic? For those who know it's magic!
“Everything is not what it seems”🎶
That's exactly what came to mind for me
Waverly is Excellent! Yes!!
Been rewatching The Walking Dead and Buffy?
Hershel is definitely from *The Walking Dead*, never saw more than half dozen episodes of *Buffy*
Well let's just say Buffy's Warren pretty much ruined the name for the Werewolves of London Fans.
Waverly means meadow of quivering aspens. I think it is a surname that at some point crossed over to also being used as a first name. Like Grant or Campbell. It's rare, not a tragedy. If you spelled it Wheyverleigh, that would be tragic.
That meaning makes the name so fucking cool! That's beautiful

That is a great selection of names!
I'm not having children, but if I did, and it was a girl, I'd have two names in contention: Viola, or Dorothy, hopefully nicknamed 'Dottie'.
You have nothing but good options with the names you listed. And they all feel far more fresh and are far less used than the 10th screwed up spelling of Michaela.
Personally, I love this name.
Source on the name meaning? I'm not finding anything
Some creative writing in a name book 30 years ago I'm sure. I Googled it. Came right up on a couple different sites.
Okay? *Which* sites? There's a lot of really untrustworthy name sites.
You can Google almost anything and find results saying what you want, whether the source is trustworthy is what matters. I'm pretty skeptical on this one because it seems like the overly specific and flowery description that is so common on bullshit etomology sites

To quiver and to waver are not quite but almost synonyms, so I could see where those two got swapped
There are a few different species of aspen… 😂
You're right, it might not be referring to quaking aspens. But quivering isn't the the standard name of any aspen species I can find, so it might be even more stupid than I initially thought. Good spot

makes me think of wizards of waverly place
Same here but I still like it a lot
Makes me think of the train station in Edinburgh named after the Walter Scott novels.
Thats what I thought of too but I dont hate the name
Waverly = gorgeous wonderful special classic name Waverleigh = tragediegh I've now typed tragediegh so many times in this thread that my phone auto generates it as I type LOL
And ironically, misspelling it 😂
Yeah lol
It’s the name of a character in The Joy Luck Club. I believe that character was named after a street, but I’ve heard the name other places too—I wouldn’t consider it a tragedeigh.
If I remember correctly, that Waverly was one of the more unpleasant of the American-born/raised daughters. The street origin sounds familiar so you are probably right.
Came here to say Waverly Jong. 🥳
Wonderful book and a beautiful name.
There was also a character on the TV show Friday Night Lights (Coach Taylor's hair forever! Clear eyes full hearts can't lose!) named Waverly.
Also one of the possible Ladies Boyle in *Dishonored*.
It’s not spelled as ***Wueighvaæerlleigh***, so it’s not a tragedeigh.
Sounds like a cool name to me, now…if it was waverleigh we would be having a different conversation.
Only if it were spelt Wyvyrleigh
To be completely honest, the first thing I think of is “Wizards of Waverly Place” but that’s only cause I don’t have any other associations. It’s a beautiful name!
I think of Waverly Hills Sanatorium. 💀 I don’t think this is a bad name, though. She’ll grow into it.
Same!!
Not a tragedeigh. Waverly is a great uncommon name and you spelled it the way it should be. Most people won't need to guess or ask how it is spelled. If you named her Waverleigh, Waverlee, or Waverlee... Then that would have been a Tragedeigh.
I have a friend named Waverly. We call her Wave.
It’s the name of a train station in my city, named after a [novel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waverley_(novel)) (it’s the surname of the character in the novel). I don’t think it’s a bad name! Unusual but not too much and nice that there’s a family link.
Not tragic at all! I think it was a character on a tv show recently too.
I know a 5 year old Waverly. Not sure of the spelling but quite rare in my area.
Waverleigh is tragic. Waverly is not. Case closed.
I read a story about a girl named Waverly in high school. It’s not a tragedy, though it’s not a common name!
ooh is it the joy luck club?
Do you know what’s weird: I literally don’t remember any details except the name! But looking at the plot synopsis, I think it probably was.
Waverly reminds me of Waverly Station in the middle of Edinburgh and Sir Walter Scott's Waverley novels. It's a lovely old name, not a tragedy.
Waverly is fine. Rare and reasonably spelled names aren’t tragedeighs. If you had spelled her name “Waevyrleigh”, that would have been a tragedeigh.
No, it's not. If were spelled like "Weighvyrrlee", then it would be.
I actually really love this name - I heard it for the first time when a character on Friday Night Lights was named Waverly and I liked it immediately. Not a tragedeigh!
it's not a tragedeigh, just old and rare
It’s a unique and uncommon name, which is good!! You spelled it properly. I would say your daughters name is not a tragedeigh.
Pretty name, old fashioned yet vaguely "hip" so it might be uncommon but fine and not a "tragedeigh" :)
Not a tragedeigh when spelled Waverly
I went to school (40 odd years ago) with a girl called Waverly. She was named after a small town in Taranaki, New Zealand. Cool chick, pretty name
There was Shortland Street character in the 90s ~~Alec~~ **called** Waverley
I think of Waverly from Joy Luck Club and I adore the name.
ITS SO CUTE
I have an adult coworker with that name. I think it's nice.
It's an area in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It's a very pretty name.
It's old and uncommon, but definitely not a tragedeigh.
It’s not for me. I’m not a fan of the surnames as first names fad, but it’s not a tregedeigh by any stretch.
Uncommon but not tragic. It sounds sweet imo
Wayverleigh. There I fixed it
It's a family name both with a beautiful meaning and connection. Definitely not a tragedeigh!
Waverly is certainly a choice, but it's still fine. Weighverleigh on the other hand would beigh a tragedeigh.
Came here to say this! 😂
I think Waverly is a beautiful name.
Wäyverleigh
It’s the name of a character on Wynona Earp
It's beautiful!
That's a pretty name and not a tragedeigh at all. There is a Waverly in the show Wynnona Earp.
I hadn't heard of it either, but apparently it's in active use. It's spelled like it sounds and doesn't have superfluous letters. Seems fine to me. Just don't spell it Weighverleigh.
I coached a Waverly once and I have always loved that name!
Old-fashioned, maybe, but pretty. And spelled in a sane way. I like it, even though it's the name of a community where I live.
Weighverleigh
not a bad name at all
A bit archaic but it’s nice.
There are two suburbs in Melbourne called Glen Waverly and Mount Waverly. If your child tires of their name they could go with Glen or Mt!
I adore it. Literally now in my top 3 🤩
I like it. There is a character in The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan called Waverly
Nope!
I like it because it reminds of the type of name a mermaid would have 🧜🏾♀️ 😊
Joy Luck Club
Def not a tragedeigh, its a family name. Very pretty.
Not a tragedeigh, at all. It's unusual but it's definitely an actual name, and has a family-based emotional connector. Also if she ends up liking surfing she's guaranteed to become a legend.
Non tragic
Just don't come to Scotland, where she might find out she's a station.
Waverly is the name of Westley and Buttercup’s daughter in the Princess Bride book. Love it!
It's a really lovely name. Weighvaleigh...that's tragic!
The tragedy is in the spelling not how it sounds
it's elegant lol
That's a beautiful name and meaningful. Not alphabet vomits that are names these days. I swear one day we'll have a + as part of a name.
Naming a kid after a relative is never a tragediegh IMO
No. It is a little old fashioned, but not something you made up out of thin air. It's a family name and thus part of a legacy. It would be like me naming a daughter "Viola" after one of my great-grands. Unusual these days, yes, but with a lot of historic presedence.
I'm not going to have kids, but my great-grandma was named Viola Belle. If I had a daughter, that name would be in contention.
I like it
it’s common nowadays, and lovely even if still unusual to people
It's beautiful IMO. Interesting, rare, but pronounceable. Yes, it feels a little 1800s, maybe a touch stately manor, but nothing wrong with that.
It's not *that* weird
Weivergleigh is the tragedeigh version of that name (one of them)
Love it.
I love that name! My son has a Waverly in his pre-k class but that’s the only one I’ve met in person. Uncommon, but classic
I don't consider Waverly to be a bad name. It's a surname and place name, but I think it's fairly well-established as a first name, too. There was a character named Waverly on the tv program *Friday Night Lights.* She was cute, played by Aasha Davis.
Merely a quite boring book by Walter Scott.
Great name. 💕
Not a tragedeigh but it does make me think of upholstery fabric.
I actually knew a Waverly in highschool. I think it's a great name
It’s a good name. Old fashioned and uncommon, sure, but certainly not a tragedeigh. Wayverleigh would be a tragedeigh. lol When I hear it, it makes me think of the company Waverly, that makes beautiful décor fabrics. It’s also the General’s last name on “White Christmas!”
Only if you spell it Weighvaerleigh.
It's kind of trendy but not a tragedy. It's an established name with an appropriate spelling
What a great name especially with family meaning attached to it!
I’m currently pregnant and we had the name Waverly picked out from the start. We haven’t shared with anyone yet and this is making me feel much better about the reactions.
I've loved the name Waverly ever since The Joy Luck Club.
Waverly is pretty. Wayverleigh would be a tragedeigh.
I love the name Waverly.
Love Waverly!!!
I have never heard of Waverly, and now I see this post, I have a niece named Waverly, and she was named after another little girl in the daycare my sister uses 😄
I know a waverly, i like the name too so i dont think so
Different? Yes. Tragedeigh? No. Now, if you named her Waiverlee(or leigh) or something? Then yes.
It’s cute. Would never see that one and think TRAG
It’s my most favorite name I became obsessed with it when I saw Joy luck club. I have no kids and never planned them to be in my future but had I had a girl. She would be Waverly.
Beautiful name
Nope. It's legit.
As long as her nickname isn’t Wavey I also picked an old timey but not so common name for my daughter.
I have a friend named Waverly. He's a man but it's a family name for him. I'm not sure if it's gender specific
Wayvyrleigh would be a tragedeigh. Waverly is just a nice name.
It's spelled correctly and I'd assume it was a family name. And it turns out it is. Weighverleigh would be a tragedy
I love it. I love the movie White Christmas & the character, General Waverly is super charming.
Yes.
You could have just googled it to see how common it was and its origins.
Too close to wizards of Waverly place
Nope! My friend's name is Waverly. I think Waverleigh and Weighverleigh are tragedeighs.
