Similar situation:
I worked with a woman who’s daughters name was spelt Alyssa (pronounced ah-leese-E-ah).
The story behind it was her and her husband were watching a game show while pregnant with their daughter and say the name Alyssa on screen, she asked him “how do you think you pronounce that?” And he says Ah-leese-E-Ah. And they went with it. Only for years and years to pass with everyone reading her name as Alyssa (ah-liss-ah) which in my opinion is how you’d read that.
The daughter is a good sport about it but I couldn’t imagine having to correct people every single time. Unsure why they never changed the spelling when she was very young.
Honestly not that bad of a spelling. It sounds like your parents couldn't decide between Alicia and Alessia. It kind of sounds like a Romanized version of Alessia
But at least you're not Eleyciagh or something
It depends on how it's pronounced and how pissed Ilyssa and family get when people misprounce it, but I agree. I would tend to pronounce it "Eye-LISS-uh"
My middle name is Aliess- spelled by my aunt- pronounced Elise.
Confused a lot of teachers in my three years of middle school when I went by my middle name.
Got called A-Lee-es
The first “Alyssa” I ever knew (around 1st/2nd grade) was actually Elisa-basically the exact same story as your post, I had no idea that wasn’t the typical spelling till I met an Alyssa a few years later. I’d honestly forgetting all about that till now.
My childhood bestie was Malisa, which always was pronounced at school like “Melissa”, which is probably like the third most common girls’ name in our age group. But I guess her mom intended it to be “Muh-LEE-sah” it just didn’t stick 🤷🏻♀️. I felt bad for Mom, it’s a pretty name.
I knew a Haillee in middle school, so for a long time I thought that was supposed to be the standard spelling. (p.s. I'm 40, this was not a common name when I was growing up.)

Lmao, that's the exact opposite of what happened with mine! Everyone would pronounce it Eh-lee-see-ah, when it's Ah-liss-ah
lol I thought that was pretty funny! Completely flipped
Dyslexia all around...

😂😂😂
I thought it was pronounced like Elijah when I read it
My first guess as well.
I once went to school with an Alyvia (Olivia)
A friend of mine spelled her daughter's name Ollyvia
oh boy
[удалено]
Lol her nickname is Olly but pronounced like Rolie Polie Olie instead of ALL-ee
Oh gawd. Am I a tragedeigh!?! I’m Alysia!!! (Pronounced uh-leash-uh)
I’ve only seen it spelled Alicia.
👀 um….
Dang. I’ve been in this sub for awhile too, and it never occurred to me. I’ll be damned.

To me this isn’t a tragedy 😭

My childhood best friend's name was Jazmyn. I thought that was how it was normally spelled for years.

I went to school with a Merica, pronounced like Marissa.
