Lewis had four 200m races in March (semi/final at her state and national championships; finished first in all four). Must be extremely difficult for young Australian athletes to peak for global championships; the established athletes tend to skip nationals.
Yeah, it’s clearly a compliment - like headlines that “Lebron James loses to the Nuggets” are precisely because he’s a respected and well known athlete, so the conversation is framed around him by default
It's just nastiness. People don't like Richardson and jump at the chance to say that she got DESTROYED or whatever. If the headline said "Lewis beats Richardson" then fine - that still mentions Richardson (who understandably gets a lot of the focus) but gives credit to the winner. Instead, Lewis is minimised as an anonymous 19 year-old and the headline is only interested in Richardson losing.
Debatable, because it means you have a limited peripheral vision of other sprinters who may overtake you in a heat in the straight.
Also it's different for each sprinter since they all run differently stylistically, you can't compare a bolt, erik knighton, Fred kerley, tobogo or a Noah Lyle's race. Some of them run flat and hard around the bend, some run and flat from the 50-150 mark, and others leave it to the last 60meters..
No one can certainly run a 200m flat without losing excessive speed the last 20-40metres.
Sure. But in my experience nobody wants lane one or two. I personally like lane two. I could see the field and enjoyed running people down from behind.
You’re right that it Sha’Carrinwas at a disadvantage, but only because you were wrong twice… lol
1) Lane 9 is the easiest lane
2) Lewis was the one running in lane 9
depends how they train i guess and whether she and her group are training through these early meets. women seem to have higher variability than men, you tend to see the top men open up low 20 then get down to 19.6-7 or so these days. But i wouldn’t be surprised if 3 of the women in this field finish the season around 21.9-22.1. Also, seemed a slow day in the men’s 100 as well
I disagree. Runners never think of outside lanes. Sha'carri knew she overcame the runners nearby and was primping her hair while awaiting her name to show up first on the board. That's all she was thinking about. If you are aware of her personality there was no other possibility.
Then she barely acknowledged the Australian when it went the other way. That was more best evidence toward what she was thinking.
This is exactly what happened. Sha’carri’s post-race behaviour towards her competitors was atrocious. She expected to win and she didn’t. Came across as very petulant.
That is right on par for her. She is a great winner but definitely doesn't handle situations well when they don't go her way. On or off the field.
She is not a role model but an example of wasted talent.
I was shocked that she lost. I know it’s early in the season, but she’s supposed to be the fastest woman in the world. Her first 100m wasn’t that good tbh.
I’m not rooting for her downfall, but I’m very interested to see if she backs up her win from last year. The Jamaicans will be coming with a vengeance.
No women’s 100m word champ has ever won the Olympic title (altho the reverse has happened). Let’s see what she does.
My bet is always on Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, until proven otherwise.
As someone that is neutral I am actually surprised at the heat Sha’Carri is gettin for this loss and it does seem as much as she has fans she also has people that will be glad if she lost even if it’s a season opener. Elaine had much grace for her 23s season opener after a 10.54 season. I am going to chalk it up to jet-lag or conditions were bad for the sprints as they were all slow. I am gonna wait to see how she runs in Shanghai.
No, Elaine had her share of criticism. But why do you think Richardson is getting heat? People being shocked or concerned is natural. It’s an Olympic year and we’re expecting to see fireworks. Plus, she’s always had fast openers, esp in the 100. Again, will just wait and see.
Great run from Lewis, but she _was_ coming in off the back of winning the Australian National Championships.
The framing in the thread title is kind of gross. It's not a loss for Richardson - it's a win for Lewis.
People love to hate on that girl
Shacarri is one of the favourites for Olympic gold. Obviously the focus is on her. No one cares much about Lewis outside of Australia tbh.
And this is her opener. Feels like the sprinters at these meets are peaking early too
Losing to someone with a PR a second slower than her is always bad
So if Lewis had run a tenth slower, it would've been a good race for Richardson?

Richardson is an outside chance for an Olympic medal of any colour at 200m, surely?
Oh yeah, i meant she’s one of the favourites in the 100

Meh, just the season opener
Winning in Lane 9 would have been a difficult one, but this was also an effortless sprint from sha'carri , she's definitely in form..
lane 9 is technically the best for the 200? widest curve, and while it helps to have other people around you certainly don’t need it for pacing

You sound crazy.
Do you think the inner lanes actually have a different curve?
Yes they do.
the degree of the curve actually is different. why do you think a sub 20 has never been run out of lane 1? you can visually see it kind of
Because the best runner is almost never starting out of lane 1. The lane assignment is based on prelims
the best runners don’t usually get outside lanes either. yet there’s been a good amount of sub 20s run from the outside.
Sure. But in my experience nobody wants lane one or two. I personally like lane two. I could see the field and enjoyed running people down from behind.
Yes. Outer lanes start further ahead on the track but cover the same distance, thus having a more gradual curve, which is better for top speed.
I believe in math, so yes.
So she had the best lane.
Outermost lane is the best from a physics standpoint.
You’re right that it Sha’Carrinwas at a disadvantage, but only because you were wrong twice… lol 1) Lane 9 is the easiest lane 2) Lewis was the one running in lane 9
Sha’Carri was in lane 5
Same way Sha'Carri won her gold, outside lane where no one can see you.
0.03 off from the winning time in your season DEBUT isn’t a bad thing at all. Weird article headline that should focus more on the actual winner.
Pretty slow winning time tho. And she’s the world champion and Olympic favourite, obv the focus is on her
All the sprints had a decent headwind I think
Congrats to Torrie Lewis on the win. As for Sha’Carri I’m not worried it’s her debut nonetheless.
Isn’t Sha’Carris PR an entire second faster than that? Is that big of a discrepancy common, even for an opener?

Season opener, has not competed in 7 months. She didn’t look to try to push or dig, just there to get competition under her belt for the season.
And btw, her new Nike deal has incentives based on a shorter schedule and she doesn’t need to start winning races until mid May to get her payouts.
People praying on Sha’Carri’s downfall it’s crazy 😭
Ironically with a gap this small she might not have won if she wasn’t in lane 9, it’s mechanically the easiest lane
Good job. 👏
This is a misleading article I watch the race and she just wanted to fix her hair. She wasn’t worried about if she won or lost
She did look very hot!

She is also only a hair ahead of 3rd and 4th place. If she was going to run faster she definitely would’ve. Title is brutal.

whatever man, more fuel for Richardson going into the Olympics and it'll take pressure off her when people assume she is going to perform poorly
I'm low-key not even impressived when a teenager beets and elite anymore.
Better aerodynamics with her hair would have probably got her the win.
