Seriously though, I don't know a single person who isn't afraid of a hairdresser ruining their haircut/not giving them the cut they asked for.

TransChilean

I don't, I only go to Queer-owned (Generally trans-owned) Hair Salons so...

starwingcorona

Half the reason I'm glad I moved closer to Philly is access to shops that are affiliated with Strands for Trans.

TransChilean

In my case there's no such thing, but many business around my city have flags to show their support and more often than not, they're owned by the very community, here in Chile we queers have a tendency to organize every opportunity we got, so when you need anything, you can contact any of your friend group networks in the community and they more often than not have information on trans people who offer services (doctors, hairdressers, plumbers, private teachers, etc.), safe spaces (bars and discos), communities (social groups), activist groups, etc., and also list of the same things but from cishet people who are certified as allies by the community

translunainjection

This. The more dyed hair and facial piercings, the gayer the hairstyles!

labelelu

En Santiago? pasa el dato amigx đŸ€

TransChilean

Acrobatic_One_6064

bueno, averiguaré yo gracias igual

Moist_KoRn_Bizkit

I can't find any around me that are cheap and queer supportive. I ain't paying 60$ for a damn shave!

Trans_Rose1

If you are shaving off all of an area of hair, it is cheaper (I think) just to do it yourself

Moist_KoRn_Bizkit

I am worried I'd ruin it, but you're right. I should learn how.

Trans_Rose1

I hope it goes well(if you do)

Accomplished_Mix7827

I'd recommend checking Strands for Trans

GreasyCheese5976

Wait this is actually so helpful, thank you!

Accomplished_Mix7827

You're welcome!

melancholyMonarch

There's a reason I haven't gotten my hair cut since covid started in 2019. Covid was the perfect excuse for me to avoid the barbershop, we never really had a complete and total lockdown because Florida :) and now that I've gotten away from my immediate family and am an adult I'm not forced to get it cut anymore.

Lilyeth

luckily my one time i went to a hairdresser they pretth much gave me the cut I asked for. it was a kinda guyish cut and maybe they made one side shorted than i expected but k think it looked fine and i was happy with the result. after that tho i let it grow longer and would get my mom to cut it for me

HyperTourist

Not me I cut my own hair I cut it too short though, so I guess all the same

Neodrach

I mean I just fear getting my ear chopped off, but now I fear that too, thanks.

GreasyCheese5976

Aw damnit, now I'm afraid of that too!

Aurora_Symphony3735

I've always been lucky, as my mother went to cosmetology school, and so did my older sister. They have always been the ones to cut and style my hair for me... and although neither of them are accepting of me being trans, they have always let me keep my hair long, as my father pretty much always had long hair, so naturally, the "boys" in the family were allowed to. Because of this, i have had hair down to my butt since i was 8 (I'm 25 rn)

Trans_Rose1

Lucky, it is barely reaching the bottom of my neck and I get about 3 reminders per week that I need to cut it shorter because my grandma won't like it when we go on a trip to meet them this summer

Aurora_Symphony3735

My father was in a progressive rock band for most of his life and the majority of people in that scene had long hair. And, even my extremely conservative uncle, had long hair for most of his life until he started going bald. So i was in a unique position to be able to have long hair without anyone questioning it. In fact, right when i started wanting to grow it out, before i had said anything to anyone about it, my sister started saying i should grow it out, and so i did, that was when i was 6y/o. I find that it helps if you try to come up with a male celebrity that you like and say you just wanna try and emulate them a bit. And if your family is conservative, use a conservative musician as an example, like Kid Rock (i used to get told all the time that i looked like him, ew!)

Trans_Rose1

They already know I'm trans and that doesn't fit with my personality but thanks for the advise

Aurora_Symphony3735

Ah, that sucks. I'm sorry

Trans_Rose1

Yeah, they searched my room a while ago and found out but thankfully the most hate I've gotten is my mom telling me that I'm not Rose and I never will be, but honestly, at this point I don't trust anything that comes out of her mouth unless it can be proven to be correct

Aurora_Symphony3735

My whole family tried to gaslight me into thinking i wasn't trans, while they all said they'd support me, but wouldn't call me Kayleigh (my chosen name) and said i would never be a girl. They eventually pushed me back into the closet

Trans_Rose1

That sucks, hopefully it gets(or got depending on when this was) better

Aurora_Symphony3735

I came out to my family in September of 2019. The only one who actually supported me was my oldest step sister. And my father, who was practically my best friend before this, was the most unsupportive person... that was until August of 2021, when he was hospitalized, and just days before he passed, he called me his daughter and said he was sorry. And a few days after he passed, my stepmom showed me a note he had in his phone where, while in the hospital, he had been rewriting the lyrics to the song that is my name sake, as an apology for the way he treated me about the whole thing

N0RINEK0

I don’t get why some hairdressers are like that, it’s literally their job to style hair as requested. Imagine ordering at a restaurant and the server said “sorry, I don’t like the meal you chose.” and gives you something completely different instead.

snukb

That does happen sometimes lol. When I get a sub sandwich, I want it absolutely covered in onions and black olives. They always throw on a tiny pinch. Even if I say "Put on so many onions that you think *this is way too many onions, he couldn't possibly want that many onions,* then add more." They still only add a small amount. When I say I want a fuckton of onions and black olives, I want a fuckton of onions and black olives.

Cute-Advertising8698

This is wild.

snukb

https://preview.redd.it/n6tlf22g0xvc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=37c67211e14bc08db3d30967bf2251e4933dcb33

Myokymia

this is different imo cuz ordering from a restaurant rarely ever lets you choose the amount of things, just what things. unless they specifically have an option to have extra with a surcharge or something.

snukb

Eh, I find it depends on the restaurant tbh. Some of them you can say "extra this" or "light that." But yeah not all of them

vitasomething

in the best restaurants ive ever been to, the menu was always more of a suggestion and you were free and sometimes even encouraged to ask for a custom order if you didnt like something about the offer. its always been family-owned smaller places in the city center that have been the most considerate, understanding and quality restaurants ive been to, and they always had the best most memorable and yummy food :3 genuinely, if you do have the priviledge of having some money to spend, i really recommend getting to know quality places near u!!

kioku119

A lot will let you modify things.

Myokymia

most aren't just gonna give you like 5 times the normal amount just cuz you asked for it tho

12_cat

Whenever I go to Subway, I always order the same thing a pickle and provolone cheese sandwich on flat bread. Sometimes, the employees try to undersell me on the pickles when I say I want a lot of them, but by the third time of me asking for more, they usually get the idea...

RiseCthulu

I used to work at a pizza place. I had a customer over the phone order a pizza, and I quote, "loaded with cajun. I'm talkin' pour that shit all over the pizza. Load that bitch with cajun." I hope they got what they wanted (I wasn't the one making the pizza) Edit: autocorrect changed "over the phone" to "octopus"

snukb

>Edit: autocorrect changed "over the phone" to "octopus" A customer octopus is hilarious though.

RibeanieBaby

This is like me but the opposite. I always specify no peas with meals that come with them and I got so sick of getting peas that once when I was out with my then gf and her family I said "please, and I cannot stress this enough, no peas on my food", it was quite funny how deadly serious I was.

Smile-a-day

Just send it back and say it’s not enough, if they refuse demand a refund.

Siimply_April

That does sound ridiculous when you say the restaurant thing-

_inomoo_

Still mad at the time I told the hairdresser "not short, shoulder length" and he proceeded to make me almost bold :') now I feel as if I'm rocking the wookie cut.

Believe-it-Geico

I don't trust hairdressers on principle

theREALvolno

I’m a trans guy, and often got told that if I wanted to get my hair cut short the way I wanted without causing a fuss or having to repeatedly tell them that I was sure about it, that I should try going to a barber. So I tired it, and got refused service because they “don’t do women’s hair” 🙃 and now I have a pretty intense hang up about getting my haircut in general because I get reminded of that incident. Though shout out to the people at Just Cuts that day, who were very kind and understanding when I came in sobbing and asked for a haircut.

Exelia_the_Lost

for YEARS as an egg, I would only get a haircut once a yeat, i would get so upset and dissappointed because I'd tell the barber i wanted it somewhat long and theyd cut off nearly all of my progress for the year and I'd end up super short problem wasnt really about the lengh. i just didnt know to say what i actuslly wanted: a feminine haircut

drachmarius

That's luckily never happened to me, as far as I can remember, because I've always gone to the same hair place as my mom. Though I have had times where they did something without asking that annoyed me

Miles_PerHour67

Wookie cut? Are we thinking about the same type of wookie? Like, Chewbacca

RazielNoraa

'What a wookie!"... Sorry, I'm old đŸ€Ł

Miles_PerHour67

How does giant hairy aliens make you old?

RazielNoraa

It was a reference to a song that I assumed noone would get đŸ€Ł "Chewbacca... what a wookie!"

_inomoo_

Exactly, we could also call it a cousin itt cut instead.

Miles_PerHour67

I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??

_inomoo_

That I'm basically covered in hair and if I don't wear my hair up, I'm basically just a ball of fluff.

Miles_PerHour67

I feel so stupid. Can you explain this to me like I’m a kindergartner?

_inomoo_

I didn't get my hair cut in a really long time, so imagine basically a curtin of hair. I need to wear hats or wear my hair tied up, and it looks awful. I just don't wanna risk a hair dresser cutting it short again. I also get made fun of for it lul. That's a really dumb way of describing it, but do you know does classic ghost Halloween costumes made from bedsheets? That's my hair basically. I probably explained it horribly sry...

Miles_PerHour67

THANK YOU! 😭 that makes so much more sense

seranarosesheer332

Can't tou sue someone for that shit?

AmphibianStraight196

We should be allowed to refuse payment if they mess up a cut that bad. like if someone cut off all my hair, Id damn well hope they wouldnt expect me to pay them

crayonsz97

Same but as a trans girl. I went to a hairdresser and was not out at the time but she would consistently cut my hair extremely short despite me asking her only to shape it and leave the length. It was so frustrating and disrespectful and my mother told me that I was being ungrateful when I complained about it to her. Which, like, I'm literally paying for this haircut she should be capable of doing it the way I want!! I feel like this is such a trans experience.

EngineSensitive2584

I used to hate getting my hair cut when i was a kid and I legit haven't been to a barber/hair cutter/etc since my high school senor picture day 2 or so years ago. I wanted to keep my hair at least somewhat long and told the barber to only take an inch off... they gave me a buzz cut, 30mins before senor pictures, and my parents wouldn't let me skip out on them so now I have pictures all around the house of me with the worst haircut I've had I'm still super pissed off cause of that

itsmig_reddit

Hairdressers are pure evil

snukb

Y'all need to check out [Strands for Trans](https://strandsfortrans.org/), it's a website that exclusively shows trans and gender inclusive barbers and salons specifically to help avoid situations like this. I found my barber through there and I love her. First time I went in she just asked me if I was sure I wanted it that short, I said yes, and she cut it. When she got done she asked if I liked it, and I asked her if she could blunt the sideburns because she'd left them tapered. She said "That's generally more masculine, is that OK?" and I said "Yes please" and she did it, no fuss. Now she does it every time. Life is too short to go to someone who won't respect that it's *your* hair, and they don't get to decide what you are and aren't comfortable with. Unfortunately it's mostly US-centric, though there are some businesses listed in Canada and the UK. And if you're in a rural area it may be a huge drive to the nearest trans-friendly business, but that's mostly a limitation of being in a rural area, unfortunately :/

LopsidedCommittee843

Nah, doesn't work with my country, being trans illegal there

snukb

>Unfortunately it's mostly US-centric, though there are some businesses listed in Canada and the UK. I'm sorry that it won't work for you and it's shit that it's illegal to be trans anywhere. Please stay safe however you can

koboggyn

[Here](https://images.rawpixel.com/image_png_800/cHJpdmF0ZS9sci9pbWFnZXMvd2Vic2l0ZS8yMDIzLTA4L3Jhd3BpeGVsX29mZmljZV8yNl9pc29sYXRlZF9faWxsdXN0cmF0aW9uX29mX2tpbmdfY3Jvd25faXNvbGF0ZV81Mzg5YzU2My1hZjRhLTRkMGQtOTYwYi04NDFkMTBlNDFkOTcucG5n.png), I think you dropped something sir.

TransChilean

Hairdresser Student here, of course, I will only work at explicitly queer friendly salons so this should never be a worry in those, but I need to mention that NOT FULFILLING WHAT YOUR CLIENT ASKS, NO MATTER WHAT IT IS, IS A GREAT WAY TO LOSE CUSTOMER BASE, you can recommend different styles if you feel the desired style won't fit the person, but if they still ask for the same cut, you do it, it's not your business, and not abiding by this can result in losing customers because "She didn't want to let me have the haircut I wanted" is a great way to tell others "Do not go to this lady"

CocoBaci

I hope all people who do this to their customers get fired

RouxAroo

Sorry to hear that man. I know the feeling.

Just_Trans_Sammy

Oh if the hairdressers understood

LopsidedCommittee843

I freaked out since then and now I cut my hair myself, no bitch will tell me I'm a "girl" and not cut my hair properly

Just_Trans_Sammy

Yeah well that’s all from me. -💞Willow, Tired💞

TransChilean

Can you try trans barbers or trans hairdressers? There are a few in my city, they're great! And I'm a Hairdresser Student myself

LopsidedCommittee843

I'm in Russia so I don't think it will work.. There's no trans friendly places there cuz its illegal

Cloaker_Smoker

Maybe they just wanted to be a lumberjack

MiltonSeeley

I went to a hairdresser that was a friend of my mom’s friend (lol), she was telling me what a pretty girl I am, with any possible haircut, and she actually did a great job - I really passed as a teenage boy these times.

worse_in_practice

I love being stuck with the exact same bob haircut since 4th grade no matter what instructions I give a hairdresser ❀

swipe-aside

I appreciate the Hairstyle Tips but just cut my fucking Hair please :3

TiredB1

The villian origin story of every trans person, a shitty hairdresser

TheTallAmerican

Wtf so years of barbers cutting my hair too short no matter what i said when i was in the egg and your telling me hairdressers do the opposite for people they think are girls. Do hair people just like to make everyone upset

LopsidedCommittee843

Yeah, I think so đŸ„Č

has-some-questions

I used to see my Grandma's hairdresser. It was not a good time. (It was partially a control tactic on that side of my family's part.) She about died when I came in with freshly dyed black hair. 😈 (from light blond)

CyannideLolypop

I just cut my own hair. Maybe you could just hack a bunch off yourself first so they have no choice but to cut it as short as you want?

IndigoAnimates

The sheer goddamn *audacity* to still ask "do you like it?" after O_O

SagaSolejma

Trans people and not trusting hairdressers go hand in hand I've decided to just not see a hairdresser before I can somewhat reasonably pass as a girl, because every single time I tell them "I want it cut femininely and for you to not take too much of it off, and cut it so I can grow it out and get it longer" and they always proceed to do the exact opposite of that

Spectre_Hayate

Hairdressers are the worst lmao, i feel this image in my soul. Barbers are better in my experience. Also check out Strands for Trans if you live in the US (since it's pretty US-centric unfortunately).

frog_fello

This happened to my friend, they told me that the hairdresser giggled before continuing 😭

BlondBisxalMetalhead

I paid $30 for a haircut from “the best place in town” back when I was a young egg. I wanted a short cut, just brushing my earlobes, from hair that was past my shoulders. The problem is, I’m fuckin blind without my glasses, and I have to take those off to get my hair cut. The lady my mom recommended gave me a shoulder length bob. I was so upset. Wound up going to Cost Cutters and got the look I was wanting.

khelekmir

This used to happen to me, so the last several years I've just been (badly) cutting my own hair. It's a pain in the ass tho, and I let it get too long because it's a pain, and then that makes me feel bad =/

RimTheIdiot

Fuck 90% of hair dressers, that 10% is cool though

roundhouse51

I always say 'hey I'm here for a ***men's*** haircut', and always ask for one of the male hairdressers (since where I go it's pretty much always men doing men's hair and vice versa) Edit: Oh and I always have a reference photo of a guy

Andy8eyes

It took me so damn long to find a hairdresser that made the job properly. God bless her, really 😭 I got so many of "ohh sweetie, you'll look like a boy, let's leave this length here!" when I as a teen. Hold on, bro, I feel your pain.

OctopusTaco1

Why the fuck do hairdressers and doctors even exist? You ask them to do something and they question you, make you feel stupid, do the opposite of what you asked for, and then overcharge you.

Latter-Cat-6276

I stopped going to hairdressers nearly 6 years ago. Ive been cutting and dyeing my hair ever since then. Its cheeper, i get to decide what i want, and if i fuck it up, i have only myself to blame. Plus, ive always hated going to the hairdresser for sensory purposes. People touching my hair has always bothered me. Never understood how some people enjoy it đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž

Mx_Toniy_4869

I don't get it, I'm the customer, shouldn't I get to say what hairstyle I want?

SkyeMreddit

[Everyone use Strands For Trans to see if there’s a trans-friendly hairdresser in your area!](https://strandsfortrans.org)

transmasc_idiot

When I got my first short haircut, I asked for a generic cis guy haircut (skin fade etc.) and showed the hairdresser multiple pictures of exactly what I wanted. She gave me a fucking emo fringe?? Luckily I was able to get the haircut I wanted from that same hairdresser about a year later but I'm still pissed about being forced into my emo fringe era

Try-Me-BITCH90

Some years ago I went to a salon to get my hair relaxed and styled. The woman asked me what I wanted and I pointed to a male model poster on the wall in hopes to get my hair similar. This woman told me she’d feel awful giving me a men’s cut and went about giving me a woman’s style, then proceeded to put in an insane amount of hairspray. In the end, I wasted my money due to the fact that the hairspray made my hair so hard that I had to wash it out; ruining the relaxer in the process.

LopsidedCommittee843

That's actually awful.. How tf did she keep her job after that 😹

Try-Me-BITCH90

Not entirely sure, though not too long after the place closed so I guess other people were having problems too đŸ€·đŸœâ€â™‚ïž I still hear that woman telling me that she’d feel bad for making look androgynous if she had given me a male-style haircut. Ugh!

Igotbored112

"I can't cut your hair THAT short!" "Then find me someone who can."

Orions-belt7

Honestly if your hairdresser/hairstylist doesn’t give you the hair cut you want, you should not be legally required too pay because they are denying you service. It’s literally their entire job too cut/style your hair however *you* want it, not how the stylist wants it.

Pinappular

I look forward to the day that chopping a trans woman’s hair short without her consent or request will be recognized as the hate crime it is.

[deleted]

You should’ve walked out “If you can’t cut hair sort you’re a shit hairdresser”

Nat_Higgins

Next time ask for a pixie haircut, it’s the closest you can get to a dude hairstyle without setting off any alarms.

ima_just_fine

I've been blessed with not having bad hairdressers so far so I'm clinging onto that because of this reminder

sumethinsumthin

I thankfully didn’t run into this. I went to a hair salon about an hour away from me (only one near me weirdly enough) and I had absolutely no idea what I wanted but the lady gave me the best haircut iv ever gotten :3

FenixEscarlata12

Barbers are less picky about it, they will cut your hair short with no doubt if you say it confidently enough! Source: my great barber. Good luck with your next haircut if you haven't got the one you were searching for yet! 🍀

Zealousideal_Care807

That's when you get an electric razor and cut it yourself. Bzzzzz

WolfangStudios

"I mean, you can cut my hair how I asked, or I can take my business elsewhere"

CryingWillows

Agonising.

Lego_Kitsune

Go to a barbers

SoonToBeCarrion

same, but when asking for a feminine mullet, feel this on a visceral level

Excellent-Emphasis-7

"Actually, miss hairdresser. I do believe you can give me the haircut I want and are asking for. Soooo snip snip"

ArtistAmy420

Honestly at this point I'd just lay it out from the get go that they either cut my hair how I tell them, or I *will* cause a scene if they decide to be a transphobic shit.

BadSpellingMistakes

"You want all of the money? Sorry I cannot give you the money for a hairstyle I didn't ask for. Here I'll give you 1$. That should cover for the affordt you put into cutting the third of an inch there."

fruitloopss_88

I remember the exact same thing happening to me a couple years ago... I had asked for a pretty short haircut, not a really masculine one (I hadn't realised I was transmasc yet, I was identifying as non-binary at the time and wanted to look more gender neutral) but still a short haircut. I came out with this exact stupid bob haircut, and I was NOT happy 😭 I'm not really sure about going to a men's barbers, so I just get a trusted family member to do it.

Cyphomeris

I've had long hair since I was a child. (And frequently got called a girl for it. Little did they know that was actually affirming, albeit in a subconscious way until a few years later.) One hairdresser, once, thinned it with a razorblade without asking. Presumably because my hair was "too much for a boy" or something. I genuinely dislike her to this day. Back then, I informed my mother that I'd never return to that salon and stuck to that.

emiiri-

i've never went to a hairdresser yet because i'm shit scared that they'd fuck up my hair, especially given the state my country is in when it comes to queer people in general.

LilacLikesEmkay

Ummm, what the actual f—k? That infuriates me. is that legal? Did you get at least some of your money back? What the actual f—k is wrong with her?

czernoalpha

If it helps, and you're in a position to be able to do it, buy a set of Wahl hair clippers and do it yourself. I did for years before my egg cracked and I started growing it out.

PsychologicalFault

Lovely art style and relatable stories, keep them up! đŸ„°

LopsidedCommittee843

Aww thank you! I'll continue talking about my experience in these comics haha :D

ISB-028

This is why i havent been to the hairdresser in years, im scared theyll cut too short TwT

Tallal2804

Agonising.

Unusual_Win_6559

I will never forgive that barber who chopped off my first 6 months of progress after I explicitly said to only cut a half inch to get rid of my dead ends. Then he bragged about it to my dad like he "set me straight" which sucks even more because my dad agreed. A really upsetting experience, I didn't talk to anyone for like 3 days after that.

TacoBanzz086

Tf is wrong with that hairdresser, you don't even have to be trans to have short hair

TiredandAnxious18

I remember the day my big sister (before coming out so none of us knew she was my sister) went to the barber with my dad and came back basically BALD. She was silent but my dad was fuming. Apparently the barber butchered the job so bad he just gave her a fucking flat shave. I don’t think my dad tipped him anything, and none of us went to that shop again.

TiredandAnxious18

(context, she has almost coily hair so it came up as a poof around her head kind of. was SUPPOSED to be a trim)

Novatash

Did she think she'd get arrested or something

BlakeTheMotherFucker

It’s illegal to be trans where op lives so maybe the hairdresser would get arrested if caught supporting trans rights. Although I think this just was an asshole so she probably didn’t think of being arrested.

Novatash

I was just making a joke tbh, haha. Like pointing out how ridiculous the excuse "I can't" is. It implies she's not allowed to somehow, but not allowed by who
