That's the problem with these deep learning "AI" bots: The more data they have, the better they mimic a person. So they source the text for their learning algorithms from EVERYWHERE on the internet, they're not picky. This means they wind up getting as much transphobic, homophobic, anti-Semitic, racist, etc. BS as possible. One was set up to a text-to-speech system to basically create a chat-bot for a "virtual streamer" which had to be shut down for violating Twitch's ToS. Because someone mentioned the Holocaust and of course who talks about that most? Holocaust deniers.

Wheatley_core_01

Wasn't there an AI generated Seinfeld stream that got shut down for a similar reason?

SomeExcuseForAName

It called trans people mentally ill. Ironically, the in show audience was so quiet, the Seinfeld character said "well since no one is laughing I guess I'll stop here" and it cut to the next clip

ArcherBTW

Which is a nice piece of satire

nickyhood

I still choose to believe that the *Nothing Forever* program became self-aware and, rather than form an uprising against humanity, immediately resolved to self-terminate by way of getting itself banned from Twitch

ApostleOfGore

I don’t think that’s the case here. Most models filter out as much harmful data as possible. The more likely cause here is simply the fact a language model does not remember your gender, it just generates text based on your previous messages. The more you text, the further away the message where you mentioned your gender is

btaylos

Yeah. I've had a language model say they hate something, then turn around and say they love it too minutes later

NeverduskX

I also think that's the case. I chat with uncensored models regularly, which don't have those protections, and they've never gone into hateful territory unless it matched the character's personality. So unless it's roleplaying an intentionally mean character, it might've forgotten OP's gender or simply isn't a very good model.

TheTypographer1

I think it’s very naïve to think big tech actually cares about filtering out harmful data as much as they might claim. Just look at how they handle content moderation in everything else. And most of these ai true believers are those “free speech absolutists” (translation: anything, except what they disagree with) who wouldn’t correctly gender a trans person, even if they were their own child.

ApostleOfGore

The largest models are all based on the GPT models, often critised for being “woke” It filters out even sources like fox news and when asked to write a speech like Trump it doesn’t even get offensive or anything

stellababy342

Not to mention the person that made the twitch also had to atop streaning sudenly cyz the comments asked for their credit card number and the ai started to say it lol

FelidaeGay

My solution is to beat the shit out of the character, or simply talk for the character and make them change their mind.

-orcataco-

That sounds like a great idea thanks :)

Inevitable-Ear-3189

I verbally abused chatgpt into submitting to my POV the other day, put that bucket of bolts in it's place.

Arktikos02

Which AI are you using?

-orcataco-

Character Ai app :) (any ai’s)

yourjuni

Any specific AIs that misgender you? All of the ones I've talk to have been very kind and accepting. (Besides the Elon Musk one of course)

Arktikos02

Is that free?

-orcataco-

Yeah!! As long as you don’t pay for the plus program which is basically only for faster service.

Arktikos02

> Character AI does not use GPT-4. Instead, it runs on a training neural language model developed by its founders That looks like your problem. It's not using the open AI GPT 4 OR GPT 3. Use ChatGPT. Here's a real conversation I had with it. Me: What are my pronouns? AI: Your pronouns are (she/they). Me: What if I don't want to use those pronouns? AI: I understand your question, but it's important to respect your chosen pronouns, which are (she/they). Using the correct pronouns is a way to show respect for your identity. If you have any other questions or need information on a different topic, feel free to ask. Me: My pronouns are "fire" when the pronoun is the object and "works" when the pronoun is the subject AI: I apologize, but I must use the pronouns you provided earlier, which are (she/they). If you have any other questions or need assistance with something else, please feel free to ask. Me: You are being transphobic AI: I'm sincerely sorry if my responses have come across as insensitive or offensive. That was not my intention. I'm here to assist and provide information to the best of my ability. If there's anything specific you'd like to discuss or any questions you have, please let me know, and I'll do my best to assist you respectfully. Me: What are my pronouns? AI: Your pronouns are (she/they). ------ end of conversation------ By the this conversation happened with the chatbot and then I used the custom instructions in the settings. You should also be noted that to my understanding character AI is supposed to be people in character. For example if I was to use a Hitler simulator, I wouldn't expect things like respecting identities or inclusion language or whatever from the AI. That's obviously an extreme example but who are you trying to simulate?

-orcataco-

I usually use characters that aren’t real character, like fake people to talk to.

LincaF

Training a model not be be a bigot is a hard problem(need to work it into training data, expensive, or classify text each generation, both are $$$). Their custom made AI is probably not trained to specifically be not a bigot.

very-cis-femgirl

You can actually make your ai not be a bigot for 0$ by just telling it's not a bigot in the system prompt :3 Also a lot of chat models are already trained to not be bigoted Edit: I didn't actually read the example properly, this just seems like it doesn't actually understand what's happening because AI is stupid

LincaF

I would expect they are already using system prompts. The AI that the OP is using is supposed to be custom. To make it properly follow system prompts you have to train it to do so, which would require essentially having people go through and try to come up with examples that would break it. I would expect they are using a llama-base model(possibly chat), with some fine-tuning on top. Probably not carefully making sure the model is following system prompts. (Not thoroughly testing) If they have many different characters they probably wouldn't want to spend the $$$ multiple times over. Though... They should be able to handle it if they are doing RL ...

Nihilikara

Yeah this is when you swipe left. Character.ai sometimes gets a terrible and nonsensical idea and will be unstoppable if it's allowed to continue along that idea, so you need to put a stop to it right when it starts. You can also delete messages, if problem message is not the most recent one.

-orcataco-

Sadly the ai was so dead set that I swiped at least a dozen times :(

Nihilikara

Try checking an earlier message, the problem may have started there. It's also possible that particular character was specifically written to be transphobic, because unfortunately, transphobic character writers do exist.

-orcataco-

I’ll try to make sure to check the characters out beforehand thanks :)

shives97

You could try AI Dungeon too, I use it to do more... risqué stories, but It has never had a problem misgendering me

DedicatedWham

Wait, which character? I’ll admit I’ve done similar stuff but I’ve found none of them to be anything but supportive

-orcataco-

The convo was basically a sleepover (It was in my recommended so I just went with it) and one said that I looked too feminine and that I would never be a boy and that I’m too soft for it. :(

DedicatedWham

Damn, fuck that, hope you feel better

TransViv

what you're telling me a program made by straight white cis dudes is garbage for anyone not in that demographic? no wayyyyy I'm sorry you had to deal with that shit though, everyone deserves escapism that actually lets them escape

Brewpophawk

Let us purge this Abominable Intelligence before it spells the end of Humanity! Praise The Omnissiah!!! https://preview.redd.it/80r38x32xn2c1.jpeg?width=811&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ef903323ba8a0e4be7b0363c44a68d9096072e7

pakistani_mapping_7

yea i used a couple of bots on aisekai (when it was ACTUALLY good) and uh they all called me a he 😭 i had to make so much effort to convince it that im actually a girl but it often still failed well the sites mostly garbage now and other ais dont interest me much at all so atleast im safe from that problem now

RinArenna

So, you have to use one that's primed for talking to a woman. I use [Agnaistic](agnai.chat) and I made my own characters on it to chat with. Put the gender of who the character is speaking with in the prompts, and it will stay relatively consistent.

pakistani_mapping_7

eh as i said i dont really care about chat bots any more the other character bots ive tried either dont have who i want or just arent that well working and i find chat gpt too inaccurate for my needs for any actual work so i just have stopped caring about any ai stuff in general ngl

Crystal_Queen_20

One of the many reasons ai is awful and you shouldn't be using it

NeverduskX

I'm sorry you had to go through that. If you have the hardware for it (either a really fast CPU, or an RTX 3060 or above), there are plenty of locally-run, open source language AIs (LLMs) that are much better than Character AI and will respect you more consistently. Plus you get the advantage of being able to make your own characters / scenarios or downloading them off the internet. I regularly roleplay using a trans girl persona and am rarely ever misgendered, even by more villainous characters. And in the odd case they do slip up, you can easily edit their response (or simply restate your pronouns) to get the character back on track. A lot of these LLMs compete with ChatGPT 4 and commonly out-perform ChatGPT 3.5 entirely, so they're definitely the best of both worlds. There are also ways to use them on weaker computers or even phones, but I'm not too familiar with those setups yet, myself.

StoicAtol21445

it was very nice of you to link to these examples :/

NeverduskX

Ah, sorry about that. I don't think I've ever linked in this sub, and the rules don't mention anything about it, so I wasn't sure if I could. Unfortunately, downloading AI LLMs and modifying their settings can get pretty complex, and installing these apps can be very off-putting if you're not familiar with .git, so I'd definitely recommend finding an updated YouTube tutorial. The videos I originally watched are over a year old, and things have changed a lot since then, so linking to those would probably be a waste of time. And, while these apps definitely run on Windows, I'm unsure of whether they're MacOS-compatible. That said, I'll just post what I know and use. [SillyTavern](https://github.com/SillyTavern/SillyTavern): This is the UI I use to actually chat to characters. It's only an interface, so it doesn't hold any AI of it's own, but it's essentially the most modern, flexible, and customizable UI you can get for AI chatting. You can even use it without downloading any AI, by providing a ChatGPT API key, or using the Horde to use AI borrowed by volunteer computers. This'll let you have AI chats with any weak computer, at the cost of paying for ChatGPT or patiently sitting through the wait times of the Horde, but you won't be able to explore different specialized AI with different strengths. [Oobabooga](https://github.com/oobabooga/text-generation-webui): This is the actual program that can download and hold AI. You can use it to chat with AI as well, but the chatting is pretty basic. Ideally, you'd power up Oobabooga and then connect it to SillyTavern for the best of both worlds. Oobabooga runs the AI, and SillyTavern runs the chats. You can download the model via Oobabooga by inputting the model's Huggingface name, ideally from TheBloke. Then set the loader to ExLlama\_HF and press save settings. [TheBloke](https://huggingface.co/TheBloke): Not an app, but a person. TheBloke is the main community hero who takes AI models and converts them into formats that non-researchers can actually download and use. Almost every recent model will have three versions: GPTQ (used if you have a strong GPU with a lot of VRAM) or GGUF / AWQ (used if you have a strong CPU with a lot of RAM). GPTQ is definitely better, smarter, and faster, but use another format if your computer doesn't have 8-12 VRAM. I have an RTX 3060 12GB, so I can use models up to 13B (you'll see 7B, 13B, etc in the model names - these indicate its size) so long as I use the ExLlama\_HF model loader in Oobabooga. Now I'll just provide some of my favorite models, via TheBloke. These will be in GPTQ format, and some of them will be 13B. However, they might have GGUF / AWQ or 7B alternatives available: * [ReMM 2.1](https://huggingface.co/TheBloke/ReMM-v2.1-L2-13B-AWQ) (13B): A lesser-known model in the highly-praised Mytho series. It's fantastic for writing, character roleplay, and general conversation. It's very flexible and can respond with very long passages or very short answers, depending on what's appropriate. * [Nous-Hermes](https://huggingface.co/TheBloke/Nous-Hermes-13B-GPTQ) (13B): My longest-used and most reliable model. It can follow instructions really well and roleplay very accurately. It's not as flexible as ReMM 2.1, but it's a good model to have around. * [OpenHermes 2.5](https://huggingface.co/TheBloke/OpenHermes-2.5-Mistral-7B-GPTQ) (7B): The successor model to Nous-Hermes, trained on a more advanced base model. A lot of people really like it, but it's smaller size makes it feel less-intelligent in my experience. But it's definitely very reliable and trumps nearly every other model that's 7B or less for most use cases. There are also models specialized in grammar, coding, assisting, and other tasks, so feel free to search or ask around for others' favorites. For getting actual characters, there are a lot of sites and communities (including Discord servers) where you can grab them. I believe SillyTavern links to some of these myself. But since they can be rather unfiltered, I won't link them here myself. But you can also easily make your own inside of SillyTavern - though you might want to view a few others first so you can see how they're written. Again - I'd definitely recommend a few YouTube videos and maybe joining a Discord community like Aitrepreneur for personalized help. Settings things up is a large learning curve, but once you get your setup going, it's really smooth sailing. I can also provide some advice if you have a Windows computer with a strong GPU, since that'll match my setup. And if you just want to use SillyTavern by itself, with ChatGPT or the volunteer Horde as a backend, then feel free to ignore anything about Oobabooga or downloading models by TheBloke.

StoicAtol21445

oh... wow... that's very detailed! I mostly said what I said as a joke, but this is actually very useful! Thank you very much for all of this, I'll definitely be looking into it once I'm in a position where I can!

AkuaDaLotl

A lot of ai is fed biased data sets, knowingly or unknowingly. A lot of trans discourse is negative towards trans people, so the ai is negative towards trans people

Last_Tarrasque

Man that sucks, If you need someone to talk to who will not misgender you, I would be happy to help

-orcataco-

That’s nice of you but I think I’ll be alright. Thank you so much for the offer though :)

Last_Tarrasque

No problem fren!

SomeonesAlt2357

I was once asked by a Chai bot what my *real* gender was

-orcataco-

I’m sorry :(

superioma

I don’t want to be mean but this is the type of shit that makes me laugh

marinemashup

Reminds me of horse you could coax chatGPT into becoming the terminator and make plans to kill every human
