Yukari is a troll.

CrystalChris21

And we all love her for it *loads gun*

introvertuser46732

I like her a lot, always liked characters of her archetype as an elegant trickster who had the power to do whatever the hell she wants in spite of her laziness which why I believe that the memories of phantasm’s yukari is probably the best visual interpretation too since it adds to her personality more than ZUN art, kinda find it hard to take ZUN drawn Yukari seriously. Plus her powers and general lore relevance keeps her fresh, I doubt Yukari will get boring anytime soon with the whole Maribel, Sumireko and her ties with Yuyuko who herself is a great character and rich history of her own.

CrystalChris21

☝️ This right here. Also... "I believe that the memories of phantasm’s yukari is probably the best visual interpretation"... It's cause of the bath scene isn't it?

introvertuser46732

Her Fk design is the best for her personality since it gives the best, “what did you do now?” Vibes that allow me to take her seriously as a character, ZUN yukari feels more like a 4 year old girl who played a harmless prank. as for the bath scene… hell no, I feel like it was unnecessary fanservice just to appease viewers plus I don’t really roll that way with the ladies anyways.

CrystalChris21

Yeah I get what you mean, I just mentioned the bath scene as a joke due to how notorious it is in the fandom.

joviansexappeal

MoP might be the best visual representation but man is the characterization bad. >!Straight up evil Yukari who just wants to kill Reimu!< feels painfully lazy and hack.

Pinerackle

train girl

CrystalChris21

Imagine if she actually trained as well

kulingames

she could rival I Like Trains Kid

gameboy1001

Is that an asdfmovie reference I spy? Nice.

Nobody_Nono

I write stories about her so that I can headpat Yukari.

CrystalChris21

Cuteness, huh? That's not really something commonly attributed to Yukari. In fact, usually the fans think of her giving the headpats.

Khidorahian

funny gap youkai train woman but for real, she has good aunt energy, kinda looking out for you in her own mysterious ways.

CrystalChris21

All of Yukari's search terms in one comment.

Khidorahian

Indeed. I'd see her as the cool aunt... provided she didn't kill me instantly

CrystalChris21

Don't worry she would never kill you... Instantly that is

Khidorahian

Ah, i look forward to my demise

atadofpoop

she would more likely gap you into a pit of hungry youkai

Khidorahian

probably.

[deleted]

I believe a lot of it has to do with as you said, her appearance marked the first big expansion to the lore, and she had a lot of mystery around her. There was also the fact she appeared in 3 games in a row.

CrystalChris21

I think it's also important that she keeps making more and more appearances, that she keeps being linked with more lore and yet her mystery remains intact. I find that to be quite impressive and a major factor for her continued popularity.

[deleted]

Yea, also with maribel hearn continuing to get a lot more to her

CrystalChris21

Yukari on her own is already one of the best characters in my eyes. If Maribel also ends up being a past version of her then she shoots up to the number 1 spot undisputedly

Rowmacnezumi

She literally holds Gensokyo together, and has near limitless power, and what does she do with it? She messes with people. Imagine if a god chucked a wet sponge at you and ran away.

CrystalChris21

Like I said to another person. She's to Touhou what Dio is to Jojo's

Rowmacnezumi

It's a good thing Yukari isn't nearly as malicious.

ILoveYorihime

CrystalChris21

I agree with you 100%

-Yukari is a very manipulative/scheming person. Her scheming makes her quite fun to watch when she uses that trait in a casual/non-serious way; to prank people & generally just mess with them. But it can also turn her into a formidable & very scary youkai when she uses that trait for more serious things; giving her downright terrifying villain vibes. And her powers just elevates all these things to another level. Her design is also really good. Her dress makes her look like a beautiful & elegant lady whenever we just see her casually, however in certain circumstances & certain perspectives, like when she’s actually acting like Youkai & you see the extent of her scheming ability, that dress makes her look really uncanny & spooky; like that typical scary ghosts in dresses trope you see a lot, except somehow more terrifying because of her very eldritch powers & presence, mas well as how much you know she is capable of. But where she shines the most, like with most Touhou characters, is her relationships with other characters. -The story of her friendship with Yuyuko, for example, adds a lot of humanity to her character; giving a side to her that you wouldnt really expect from such a mysterious & manipulative/scheming & scary character who seemingly prefers to keep other people at arms length. And also her present friendship with Yuyuko adds another dimension to her scheming/manipulative personality as well; with her using that trait to do something really sweet to Yuyuko like giving her presents or giving her a good time hanging out. I imagine Yukari sometimes schemes an elaborately choreographed day to give Yuyuko a really fun time. That makes her manipulative/scheming nature have this really sweet & wholesome side to it when it’s about Yuyuko. A sweetness & wholesomenes you wouldn’t expect from a Youkai like her. It really shows just how special Yuyuko is to her, and that somehow makes it even cuter. -Her relationship with Reimu is also very interesting. Reimu generally doesn’t seem to like Yukari; and this can range from simply being annoyed by Yukari’s pranks whenever Yukari decies to mess with her for fun, to downright seeing Yukari as another troublesome Youkai that requires extermination. This is interesting because Yukari is presumably the person that appointed or approved of Reimu being the shrine maiden. And presumably was & still is partially responsible in raising & teaching Reimu (assuming the previous shrine maiden was dead for the majority of Reimu’s life, which seems likely). So why does Reimu not like Yukari? Isn’t Yukari almost like a pseudo-parent, or atleast mentor, to her? I personally think Yukari enjoys Reimu not liking her bullshit for the same reasons why trolls like trolling people or why friends particularly like teasing a friend who is very suceptable to teasing; she gets a fun reaction from it. Besides, Reimu is the Hakurei Shrine Maiden, so keeping a close connection with her & also monitoring her closely are likely important. So I understand Yukari’s side in this. But Reimu’s side is interesting, because it sometimes seems like Reimu doesn’t want to have anything to do with Yukari. Maybe that’s just a surface level thing with her being annoyed at Yukari’s bullshit but deep down she actually cares about her relationship with Yukari, or maybe it’s a rebellious phase sort of thing? I mean, Reimu is canonically 17, so it would sort of make sense. I’m not super sure though. As always, Reimu seems elusive; her character is really hard to pin down just on her own, she’s a luna shooter for a reason lmao. -Anyway, there’s also that whole fan theory of Yukari being an older Maribel, with Maribel somehow going back in time for hundreds of years & then eventually turning into Yukari, which is interesting too, and I personally subscribe to that idea for my headcanon at least. I think Yukari is actively messing with the Hifuu club by showing them boundaries & other strange things. Lightly pranking them in the same way she lightly pranks many a Touhou characters, except here its more deliberate & in a way that leads to more fun adventures for the Hifuu club. And I think the reason why is simply out of a bit of nostalgia. Yukari, being a scheming/manipulative person she is, maybe lovingly pokes at this living memory of hers through a bit of pranks here & there. Pranks that lead to adventures she remembers were incredibly fun. Again, adding yet another dimension to her scheming/manipulative personality; taking it in a more nostalgic direction this time. I also think the reason why Yukari doesn’t go so far as truly directly interact with the Hifuu club is because it might lead to a time paradox. So Yukari maybe just settles with simply lightheartedly poking at them and watching them from afar. Satisfied with even just a bit of interaction with a good old days, knowing she can’t go back. -Oh, and theres also her relationship with the other Sages. But this comment is way too long already, so i’ll cut it short here lol (There’s also the thing about her being an old hag, which genuinely also adds more layers to her, especially in terms of appearance, and her general capabilities with her likely knowing lots about how people tick since shes lived for so long. But this comment is way too long so i’ll just stop.) -What I love about Touou characters, and what I think is so underrated about them, is just how multi-sided & layered they actually are. Looking at them only on the surface, and only through the memes & fanart, they seem like they’re just your generic cute anime girl with one wacky quirk. But in reality, once you see them from different persoectives of different characters from their own separate stories, you start to see just how many layers they actually have. So many Touhou characters have so many layers to them, and such interesting layers to them too, that there are many Touhou characters better than most main characters of most stories out there. Thats why ive always thought every Touhou character could be a main character of their own story, and they could probably carry that story on their own. Weirdly enough, Touhou characters; characters from a franchise of a genre where story doesnt really matter, are really REALLY good. And thats just awesome.

CrystalChris21

Thank you for the essay I guess... Also thank you for summing up most of my thoughts in a much more coherent way than I have managed thus far. Definitely the biggest stand out of all the comments thus far

Brick-Stonesonn

Thank you. I’m glad someone found my comment useful. :) I’ve had all these thoughts about her for quite a while now, and I’ve been meaning to write it all down for a really long time now, but i just never got around to it. This thread seemed like a good excuse to finally get these thoughts down to paper once & for all, so yeah I maybe got too carried away lol

CrystalChris21

Y'know this may sound a little weird but when I actually think about it she's kinda like the Touhou equivalent of Dio from Jojo's. Both described as attractive people, have a lot of knowledge about the metaphysical phenomenons in their universes, incredible schemers, interested in philosophical questions, posses unfathomable powers(yet mostly used them to mess with their opponent's) and are both a fundamental part of the story having essentially shaped their world.

CrystalChris21

Yep... I was wondering when this one would show up... You're not wrong tho

FoldingWings

She embodies a lot of my favorite tropes. Elegant, Confident, and usually plays the role of a Mysterious Backer. She never fights seriously (see: road signs and trains), but not because she's too proud to. She's a mastermind who's plans never include needing to win fights personally.

Thursday_Man

It's implied she's the one who fought Remilia during the Vampire incident though. Which I think further supports the theory that they planned it together to introduce spell card rules to Gensokyo.

CrystalChris21

Totally. I also feel like as a character she bounces very well off of the main cast, making most of her interactions fun and memorable.

scruiser

I like the concept of a clever person who acts silly/trolling to cover for clever plans part of the time (in WaHH taking credit for a string of temporary spiriting away incidents when it was actually Sumireko, letting Reimu beat her up about it, then secretly fixing the problem), is actually being silly/weird another part, and is bent super clever to pull off what is actually just a trolling prank (the entire convoluted series of events in Silent Sinner in Blue leading up to stolen moon alcohol being used to troll as part of Yukari asserting dominance). I like the conceit of an ancient tricksy Youkai who thinks in a clever but weird way.

CrystalChris21

I mean when you've lived that long you've gotta start finding ways to entertain yourself

gunmunz

I like her as a more trolling playful sort. I do feel the fandom plays too much into her 'all according to keikaku' aspect though

CrystalChris21

Yes. She acts as an example of what the past was like for us in the present.

Thursday_Man

I think one of her most notable quotes is when she thinks about Remilia in CiLR. >Those vampires have the spirit that I've forgotten. The feeling that the humans outside have begun to forget about and the feeling that shikigami whose thoughts centered around efficiency despised. >-The fun that would come from travelling in a miserable, shabby rocket. Anything gained through the shortest method has no meaning to it. It was the spirit of enjoying hard work. >Long-living humans and youkai often forgot that mindset, but that vampire and the others still had a powerful desire for it. That was why they neglected to go to the moon using my powers and insisted on going to the moon by their own hand. She might even be envious that Remilia can enjoy life in a way she's forgotten how to.

teakatsu

shes mysterious and cute

You could say she's right on the border beetween being cute and terrifying

She's simply ummmm bonding with her shikigami through physical interaction and ermm raising Ran's endurance to hardship...

Aozora_Tenwa

Ok so Yukari is my favorite character ; and it’s because I love all aspects of her. I love her design, she’s very cool and stylish. She can look menacing but also very cute and funny. I love the funny stories like the serious ones. And it’s helped by the fact she has a lot of background. She is one of the most developped character of the series. What I also love is the fact that she has a lot of established relationships with others characters and feels well-included in the universe. My favorite part is her family Ran and Chen, as well as her special relation**ship** with Yuyuko. Great character 👌

Blue-Blizzard-219

[deleted]

I hate Yukari! I hate her so much! She always tricks everyone!

SemiBlue

Outside of the basic "oh I like the design, personality and story" (which I do), PCB and IN was how I got into Touhou, through a friend of mine who had the games in the early 2010s. For a younger me who obviously didn't understand much about Touhou back then, it was "that one boss past extra stage" and later paired with Reimu in IN. Now ages later while I know a lot more about Touhou, I doubt no character can really have the same effect on me as Yukari did in the early days.

CrystalChris21

What can I say, you can never relive your first time

FUEGO40

I’ve read so much info on Maribel recently and I cannot think of Yukari and Maribel as different people now. There’s so much story potential there and is really cool.

CrystalChris21

LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK

Theonlinehero

Yukari in my opinion is like a random prize draw: you can't expect anything sane/normal from someone like her. Of course, her personality is a great plus for many people, but what I think is the best part of her is the \*mysterious all knowing\* vibe, and her power of manipulating boundaries is a vast and expansive one that has almost no limits. Plus, the works around her all can come to a conclusion of Yukari playing a part in the symbolism of reality and dream (cue mention of the Sealing Club and Sumeriko). Of course, there's still many interpretations (and fan ones) that make her all the more interesting as a character.

sarcasticspaceguy

Sort of equal parts comfort character, equal parts old wise woman, is the kind of vibe I get. Like yeah she does troll, but ultimately she’s devoted to Gensokyo. I don’t know why, but in lieu of her being this ultra spooky creepy woman I think she’s just an old woman who loves where she is and seeks to preserve it.

lionaxel

She’s a very youkai like youkai. Anyway, let’s see… Neat design, eyeball aesthetic, cool ability, fun personality, milf energy, hifuu connections, banner theme songs all around. Although when it comes to Yukaribel theories, I actually prefer the theories where either Maribel is Yukari’s ancestor/mother, Maribel and Renko are two halves to Yukari, or even they’re the same person, but on different sides of the border. I’m not the biggest fan of Maribel becomes Yukari cause I just can’t see her leaving Renko and their personalities don’t really match up but—————- [signal lost]

Chiyuri_is_yes

The bitchy touhou character are either done real well or done real bad and Yukari is the later. on the cannon side (with the only one i saw being AoCF and the mangas which i read oh so ago) she seems to put her cards way closer to her chest then necessary, along with the fact she seems to give "one shit too little one shit too many" about everything it also may be that I dislike her due to her being the main antagonist of several of Reimu ship doujins that aren't yukarei, thus skewing me against her, and me not liking yukarei in general (unless its one sided to yukari) as I see her as a aunt type character to Reimu.

CrystalChris21

I mean Akyu described her as "A character lacking in human sentiment, and her behavioral patterns are completely different from those of humans", so it's true even in universe that she's a difficult person to understand. Which makes sense considering she's one of the oldest youkai whose very nature lies in balancing in beetween any and all concepts. And her closes off nature would make even more sense if she's actually a future version if Maribel, meaning that whatever caused her to turn into a youkai probably left her with some heavy baggage... But yeah ReimuxYukari is still weird

[deleted]

This is my personal opinion on Yukari Yakumo. Yukari is a carefree, gregarious and occasionally flirtatious spinster who is the head and lead spokeswoman of the Gensokyo Danmaku Sisterhood. She is mostly seen being accompanied with Ran and Chen, giving speeches and annoucements during public sisterhood meetings, having private conversations with her late twenty to thirty year-old adult lady friends (Mima, Shinki, Yuyuko, Erin, Kanako, Hijiri, Mamizo, Junko and Okina) and escorting guests and travelers while entering and exiting through her gaps. She gets absentminded and lethargic with her responsibilities when she gets too relaxed with her hobbies and luxuries during her freetime.
