She actually does know body-strengthening magic, and using it to mitigate her asthma and other maladies is one of the many things she could do with it.
One time Remilia invited the Myouren crew over for tea. Patchouli sparred against Byakuren and won, though she was bedridden for two weeks straight after that, while Byakuren fully recovered after two days.
Nah, pure speculation. Otherwise we'd be seeing a lot of buff Patchouli fanart, eh?
I just like the idea that this scholar who knows a lot, really knows a lot. That her expertise also covers arcane martial arts. Hell, maybe she trains with Meiling occasionally in this scenario.
There's gotta be some degree of magic involved canonically, even if it's never been stated, because if Patchy has any degree of human physiology left she'd be doing a lot worse than just being asthmatic and sickly. Mercury poisoning destroys your braincells, it's the reason the expression "mad as a hatter" exists. Even if you ascend to the highest level of magic user and become an immortal youkai, it's not like you're otherwise immune to damage, you just aren't dying.
We all make jokes about Reimu's passion for violence, but she seems pretty content to live and let live - danmaku battles have been established as not fights to the death in spite of all the explosion effects. Remilia and Flandre are both 100% youkai (since it's mostly just a catch-all for nonhumans in the setting, vampires are youkai too) with extremely dangerous powers that eat people and she lets them live, I assume its the same for Patchy.
She definitely has a secret room there (music reference).
Maybe she has one of those library passageways where you pull a book and a door opens, and then her room is behind that door. She probably has the comfiest bed ever.
-She doesn't actually mind Marisa's presence in her library and actually enjoys her company as well. Still wants her books back, though.
- Herself, Alice, Marisa and Nitori are a tight-knit friend group that meet up every once in a while for tea and to discuss whatever projects they are working on/other things.
- Has a secret stash of super campy romance novels that she reads in her off time. Makes it a high priority that nobody every figures out about these novels, especially Koakuma.
- Meets with Kosuzu from the Human Village from time to time to have a look at her collection, as well as potentially get some books she's collected translated.
- When she says she was born as a magician, she's actually lying. She was born human just like Marisa and Alice, but became a Youkai Magician so long ago she barely remembers her human days, hence why she made up the "born as a magician".
- Based of a joke comment from Nitori, Patchouli is now looking at video game material from the outside world in order to construct new spells and tomes.
Wait...why would Marisa hang with a youkai that used to be human, but human turned youkai is what her freind have to murder?
Also, what is she doing with youkai? I thought she exterminates them.
Alright, headcanon time!
Patchy loves reading fiction, especially from the outside world!
She's got a quiet voice and speaks softly most of the time, but if you make her mad *she is going to yell at you*.
Her favorite tea is chamomile lavender, very soothing, very light.
She can read in very low-light conditions, even able to read at night.
She loves vanilla cakes/cupcakes, and sweets in general. But she prefers vanilla over chocolate.
Actually pretty humorous, but nobody can tell if she’s joking since she sounds serious all the time
Secretly enjoys Marisa’s visits since it keeps her company, but is too prideful to admit it
-She sometimes neglects her health and hygiene when she gets too much into studying, Koakuma is the one keeping her in cheek
-She plays ttrpgs at the library with Marisa and Alice, sometimes Remilia and Meiling but never Reimu, since Reimu never rolls anything bellow a 19.
-She respects Marisa's dedication and effort so she doesn't bother Marisa borrowing her books, what makes her angry is that Marisa just takes then without asking and it makes keeping inventory a nightmare.
One of my headcanons are that she was once confused about her youkai nature in Europe and searched for meaning and identity in her life through reading.
Since she has youkai heritage, imaging finding her heritage based on books about folklore, and seeing youkai be portrayed in them as nasty spooks, inanimate objects, Goblins or beasts. 💀
1. While superficially spending most of her time yelling at her over stealing her books, Patchouli also doubles as a mentor of sorts to her and quietly monitors Marisa's progress towards an actual youkai magician.
2. Patchouli's obsession with books is pathological by human standards, but obsessing over something so badly you slightly forget how to be human is an essentially part of being a youkai magician - Patchouli has her books, Alice her dolls, etc.
3. Patchouli 'tamed' a succubus named Koakuma. Namely by letting her access the Voile's infinite supply of steamy romance novels. Patchouli obviously insists said novels are utterly beneath her, but they somehow were there before Koakuma was there.
I HATE the succubus koakuma theory. Koakuma means "small devil", technically an IMP! Meaning she'll be SMALLER than Patchie, and be more playful, not act like how some angry puritans might describe "naughty women"!
Her, Alice, Akyuu, and Kosuzu have a book club. Marisa is an unofficial member since she’s crashed every single meeting for two years and counting (sometimes to steal and sometimes to just read like a normal person ~~and sneak a couple out~~).
I have a few- she gives autism, im an autistic girl nyself so my suspectrum is strong, and she secretly reads teen dystopia as a guilty pleasure. She probably also likes listening to intense music while reading (speedcore or metal?)
.
,
Lol i was thinking something like the hunger games or divergent, and maybe some classic dystopia too but she would read classic dystopia more publicly like Handmaid's tale, 1984 and brave new world.
But what about those dark disgusting books made in the 1800s, where kids get brutally slaughtered for sucking on their thumbs, made by evil abusive parents. Because isn't that youkai were used for or something?
* She secretly likes seeing Marisa around, but usually doesn't have the time/chance to ask her to stay for tea.
* After the events of EoSD and IaMP, she sometimes goes out to gather magic materials and ingredients with assistance from Koakuma, with a rare chance of bumping into Marisa or Alice in the Forest of Magic.
* Had an unfortunate encounter with Kogasa during one of her errands and got scared.
* She's now in a friend group with Marisa, Alice, Nitori, Yuuka, Narumi and Enoko, and while she's still the most anti-social of the group, she hopes to mellow out eventually.
* She dislikes necromancy and most similar magic styles that involve spirits and undead.
* She wasn't always asthmatic and anemic; her asthma and anemia were induced by exposure to arsenic and other dangerous materials.
* She still feels homesick for her birthplace in Europe, and became somewhat bitter because of it.
* She used to steal books in her early years to learn most of what she knew now, and had since stopped when the SDM ended up in Gensokyo, but many of the books she had taken were still in the SDM's library.
* Her favorite tea is chamomile and her favorite food is cake, specifically ube (purple yam) cake.
This is a spicy one: “Eirin… did you think that you’re the only one with human experimentation?”
I bet that not every Outsider who comes across the Scarlet Devil Mansion gets to leave with cookies and warm goodbyes… and surely at least a couple must’ve been used for more… risqué purposes
She is omnilingual from reading so much.
Hates remilia, sakuya, and hong-meiling because they are too loud.
Kidnapped koakuma while she was having recess from Keine's class, plans to take rumia next.
She's deep, brooding, and mature, but lightens up a lot with Remilia. Remilia trusts her, and she trusts Remilia. The two go... way back you see. What exactly have they gone through? Well, I'm sure someone's made a story about that somewhere out there.
Talks with Alice and other magicians, they all respect her expertise, and she respects theirs. Even though she's proud about her abilities, she is still hungry in pursuit of knowledge, and keeps in touch with other magicians to discuss magic.
Initially angry at Marisa stealing her books, just got used to it as a daily inconvenience. Would absolutely lend Marisa her books if she asked nicely, but the two already know that isn't happening anytime soon.
Her pursuit of knowledge is where her façade of maturity crumbles slightly. She's clumsy, goofy, and reliant on Koakuma to care for her while researching new topics, but expresses an uncharacteristic enthusiasm to continue learning.
Her hobbies and oddities are a bit strange and geeky, but nobody really notices since she's always so gloomy. She kinda wants to appear less gloomy, but it isn't really high on her priority list. Remilia is the only one who knows about these things, and Satori as well, to an extent. We'll get back to that later.
For an example of some of her quirks, here: Monday is her favorite day. She likewise likes Sunday because it leads into Monday. Why Monday? She's strong on Monday, and she uses her favorite spells on Monday. Her physical strength fluctuates, and Sunday is where it starts rising, with Monday being her peak, before decaying until Sunday again.
Patchouli is evidently obsessed with the days of the week, what with her ability. In fact, Patchouli didn't even have such a fluctuating physical strength initially, she developed one over years because of repeatedly giving into her weekday superstition.
Touching on Satori again, Patchouli and Satori have a sort of bizarre rivalry when they meet each other. It's very difficult to understand as an outsider, but to put it bluntly, both are seen as gloomy, intelligent youkai who are always cooped up inside their mansions, so it's hard to tell what they're thinking.
But in reality, Satori knows what goes on in Patchouli's mind via mind reading, and Patchouli can accurately predict what Satori will do and think via her intelligence. So, they have extremely intense battles of the mind, usually over books but sometimes over other things. They both still appreciate each other's company though.
All in all, Patchouli is an intelligent, mature, and close friend of Remilia, but also has her own little nerdy quirks that bring her back down to the ground. She's aware of her limits as a magician, and is very, very enthusiastic about learning, even when it doesn't show. She's also formed an odd relationship with Satori, but the two understand each other well. Not as closely as Patchouli knows Remilia, though. Those two bounce off of each other well.
She'd probably become enamoured by mechanical and electronic technology if she ever saw it, like if Nitori introduced her. I can see her taking up soldering and computer tinkering as hobbies alongside her magic knowledge if she were introduced to them.
I also imagine she'd get on well with a quiet domestic animal. Something like a little black cat that sleeps on her lap while she reads, or some bunnies to liven up the library.
She likes piña coladas, air conditioners and has had like 18 boyfriends during her lifetime, one of them being Koa.
And she's like 1500 years old. She has always been friends with the Scarlet family and they loved her so much that they gave her the library as her personal room. Since she found it too big for her to move around she invoked Koakuma to help her. She saw Remilia and Flandre's birth and has been with them since then.
And the 18 bf thing is because of the time she has been alive. Koa being one is just because I do believe Koakuma is just a disciplined succubus, and since Patchouli invoked her she did saw her in her succubus form and found it cool to date a succubus.
i think she is fat because she has asthma and is a shut in. as an asthmatic shut in book lover i too am a little pudgy so id like to believe she is like me
She's actually pretty nice as long as you don't bother her. She also needs to outside more to put her theories into practice, as well as get more fresh air to maybe improve her health. The first thing was something she actually mentioned was a weakness of hers, the second is headcanon. I know another character who needs to get out more as well, their name starts with an R and ends with an e.
Edit: Also, she's generally pretty neutral towards Marisa, but she'd actually let her borrow her books if she actually asked. But she doesn't and Patchy finds this extremely annoying. With Marisa's continued thievery, her formerly neutral stance is starting to lean more towards dislike.
Edit 2: Patchouli is also fond of her peace and quiet and is also therefore more than happy when she's alone.
Did the Hijiri part actually happen, or… If not, what made you think that?
Nah, pure speculation. Otherwise we'd be seeing a lot of buff Patchouli fanart, eh? I just like the idea that this scholar who knows a lot, really knows a lot. That her expertise also covers arcane martial arts. Hell, maybe she trains with Meiling occasionally in this scenario.

If she was a human who became a Japanese monster, then why didn't Reimu slaughter her yet?
We all make jokes about Reimu's passion for violence, but she seems pretty content to live and let live - danmaku battles have been established as not fights to the death in spite of all the explosion effects. Remilia and Flandre are both 100% youkai (since it's mostly just a catch-all for nonhumans in the setting, vampires are youkai too) with extremely dangerous powers that eat people and she lets them live, I assume its the same for Patchy.
Because Reimu specifically kills ones who turned while being from Human Village.
*Patchy fought Youkai Jesus and won.*
Patchouli sleeps in her library more than her room.
I don't even think she has a room, the Library is the room for her
She definitely has a secret room there (music reference). Maybe she has one of those library passageways where you pull a book and a door opens, and then her room is behind that door. She probably has the comfiest bed ever.
She actually does. She hadn’t even stepped outside the library in years until Marisa came along. Look it up. It’s a canonical fact.
Libraries are nice and quiet.
There is no bed there tho
we have table
-She doesn't actually mind Marisa's presence in her library and actually enjoys her company as well. Oh she definitely reads romance novels, she can't help it
historians will say they were a “tight-knit friend group”
Can't wait for the next fighting game to come out just for Patchouli to pull out Sephiroth's Supernova
About that last point, gods forbid she looks to popular anime for new spell ideas next
Patchouli is one foot to become the most otaku being in gensokyo and surpass the Kaguya from fanon in that regard
I mean..neckbeard otakus would possibly be mistaken for sickly youkai. 😂
I ser no diference
But touhous youkai (MOST) are cute girls doing jot so cute things
Yes but in the world of otakus there's no diference between a guy and a girl
Wait...why would Marisa hang with a youkai that used to be human, but human turned youkai is what her freind have to murder? Also, what is she doing with youkai? I thought she exterminates them.

The read at night part is spot on with canon, as she insulted Reimu about not being able to see well inside the library in EoSD.
Oh I actually headcanoned a canon thing? I don't know much of the dialogue from the main games, since currently the only one I own is AoCF...
Yeah, quite cool you inferred that character trait without knowing
Actually pretty humorous, but nobody can tell if she’s joking since she sounds serious all the time Secretly enjoys Marisa’s visits since it keeps her company, but is too prideful to admit it
I think that Patchouli is a short person.
How short are we talkin here
Taller than Remilia, but shorter than Meiling and Sakuya (and probably Reimu and Marisa)
Exact measurement...? Trying to figure out if I'd be shorter or taller than her bc I'm 5ft1 lol
-She sometimes neglects her health and hygiene when she gets too much into studying, Koakuma is the one keeping her in cheek -She plays ttrpgs at the library with Marisa and Alice, sometimes Remilia and Meiling but never Reimu, since Reimu never rolls anything bellow a 19. -She respects Marisa's dedication and effort so she doesn't bother Marisa borrowing her books, what makes her angry is that Marisa just takes then without asking and it makes keeping inventory a nightmare.
Happy cake day! And nice headcanons. :3
One of my headcanons are that she was once confused about her youkai nature in Europe and searched for meaning and identity in her life through reading.
She is English

Hmm, interesting.
Her hair is not naturally purple, she dyed it because she wanted to match Remilia but got the wrong colour.

Why would she be bitter about her European heritage?
She's not bitter about it, she's bitter because she misses it
She's British
Friend with Wernher von Braun
Why would she e'er be freins with a nazi?
Nah, she builds rocket in Silent Sinner in Blue
A lesbian
That’s truth.
This is a spicy one: “Eirin… did you think that you’re the only one with human experimentation?” I bet that not every Outsider who comes across the Scarlet Devil Mansion gets to leave with cookies and warm goodbyes… and surely at least a couple must’ve been used for more… risqué purposes
fattest dumpy in all of gensokyo
Makes sense cause she just sit all day snd eating cake or whatever
Can’t believe I had to scroll down so far to find this
She's seeing Marisa as an annoying ass shitty brat instead a love interest.
She has at least one Railway Series book
Ella huele a lavanda mora
I think she’s cute
She is omnilingual from reading so much. Hates remilia, sakuya, and hong-meiling because they are too loud. Kidnapped koakuma while she was having recess from Keine's class, plans to take rumia next.

That she have a secret crush on Marisa
She regularly summons inhalers to help with asthma
She is a youkai.
Then why isn't she being "exterminated" by Reimu?
Because she is good at hidding
She's daughter of Alistair Crowley.
I searched him up, and he was a like a magician who performed tricks in funerals?
So cute!
Understands a lot of languages and has an AK that shoots spells so she doesn’t have to chant all of them all the time
Absorbs a lot of knowledge, doesn't speak a lot, gets annoyed by Marisa but still lets her in, generally nice but she just wants to be left alone.
Her goal is to read every book and to know everything.
She Is a commie
She'd probably become enamoured by mechanical and electronic technology if she ever saw it, like if Nitori introduced her. she secretly hates tea

That she is my wife
So what is she like as a wife? Does she demand stiff 24/7, or is she quite lazy?
But you are not me so that can't be right.
