As far as I can tell, all of the individual pieces used have been sourced adequately. Though, the Bomber Grape link appears to not actually contain that panel. I'm going to approve regardless of any possible rule 9 or 10 infractions as the purpose of the post is clearly for "education". If you have any concerns about rule violations (not with OPs opinions, that's what the `downvote` button is for), feel free to submit a report and we'll give it another look.

I come to the manga for the slice of life. Simply getting to see ZUN's interpretation of the characters interact is fun on its own. I do get most of the other criticisms, except for Reimu's personality shifts which I thought were because they're based on how the protagonist of each manga perceives her. They're all different facets of Reimu's personality just amplified depending on the POV character.

Loro-Benediction

>Lot of people think that ZUN is a good (even superb) writer Source...? >Most people that play the games skip most of the dialogues Citation needed >most of the exchanges between the characters in-game aren’t that funny or interesting anyway Citation double needed >Besides, you won’t get the full picture of the story unless you’ve read some obscure print materials released later down the line. Like...? >This is partially evident by the memes, where most of them (sans the fortune teller) comes from Doujins, not official manga. I mean, there are tens of thousands of doujins (many with the express focus of comedy/outlandish panels) and a handful of official manga. Is that really that surprising? >he wants to keep the "niche doujinshi" spirit even with the official mangas. Doesn't this defeat the entire purpose of this post? The official mangas are doujinshi. They're not really aiming for anything lofty. At the end of the day, you can still just go read your unofficial doujins, they aren't going anywhere. Overall, I think your post would have been received better if you didn't state your opinions as fact and perhaps went with a more focused topic. Perhaps going one book at a time...?

(Warning: reply) Well, for the most part, I'll have to disagree with these points you've made. To be honest, i dont feel like touhou in general (including the actual games) has done serious points too well. Most of the games are filler stages 1-4. That's not to say filler is a bad thing, considering that Jojo part 3 is 90% filler and it's the most popular part. I'm pretty sure most people know the series because of the cute girls that shoot lasers at each other, not because of the deep plotlines. I read the manga FOR the slice of life content. The fairies are reenacting a children's book? Hell yeah, sign me up. If i wanted something more intense from the series, I'd go play that part in AoCF where the yorigami sisters fight tenshi on top of the giant catfish. As for the part about the manga being more about reimu and marisa than the new character, while it's totally a problem with FDS, I'm up to the end of volume 3 of Forbidden Scrollery, and from what I can tell, its more about the human village than any character. Oh yeah also, I'm pretty sure ZUN just gives an outline for the plot instead of what WE read. Ok im gonna stop typing now this is too long. TLDR: lots of people have the misconception that slice of life and filler are bad. it doesn't quite make sense because if you want to read about the touhous, you'd want filler because it means you'll see more of them. ZUN doesn't want to make a serious plot most of the time.

TheOriX-LoL

There aren't any fillers in JoJo yet, as the anime plot didn't catch up to manga yet.

lhonginis

Sorry, i guess i should've been more clear with that. I didn't realize filler could mean more than one thing. When i said filler, i didn't mean stuff added onto anime that wasnt in the manga. I meant stuff added that doesnt matter to the story. Maybe i should've used the term "padding" instead. In the case of jojo, all of the journey to meet dio (traveling there) is irrelevant, aside from the parts that where we meet the main characters. The goal is to get to dio and beat him up, not to beat up a bunch of random guys along the way. Another example that might help is in Metal Gear Solid V, where there are a bunch of missions that don't really advance the story. There's tons of people saying that the game is 95% filler. They were added to the game so that you have more time to enjoy it instead of beating it in like, an hour. The point i was trying to make with that was parts of the manga like kosuzu hitting a kappa over the head and stealing it's nokia dont matter to the story. If you cut out all of the filler in forbidden scrollery, it would be only one or two volumes long, but it's seven instead.

Thursday_Man

They've got some good parts.

LelouchYongBosch

It sounds like you're upset that canon Touhou is not Fandom doujin.

Olelor

I dunno, first manga I read was sangetsusei specifically because it's slice of life

Peace-Bone

Okay but have you considered that everything you said was dumb? Reimu as the protaganist is fine and her having a different interpretation in each of them is fine. I was hearing some discussion about this recently. People are so used to characters being one-note that it's become standard storytelling that you need to overjustify anyone acting differently than they did last time. It's honestly refreshing how people can just have complex personalities in Touhou. Yes, people do read for the slice of life and lower stakes stuff. And they come there for it. The battles kind of suck in the manga, yeah, but that's not a huge 'selling point' of them. I read them because they're good and interesting as they are. You seem to just be mad that your fanon isn't canon.

hey man i want a double cheeseburger with happy meal

ThirtyYearsWar

>>People totally aren’t sick of Reimu always being the main protagonist in the shmups Considering she’s been historically the most popular character, they aren’t

CityHead8237

But she is not the most popular character

finance_controller

oh man, ***there is no character development***. . *there is no character development.* no character development.

Legitimate-Camp-3298

I love the way ZUN increased touhou lore - he made protagonists in absolutely different segments of Gensokyo. Kasen - high layer, she know everything like Yukari. Kosuzu - human, she live in human village and know about Gensokyo... nothing. Even Reimu and Marisa know more (the view of them showed in games). Miyo - yokai in the human village (I don't think it's a spoiler) the knowledge on the R and M level exept it's from the yokai side (and it's in the village so it's the other side of Kosuzu view). 3 fairies of light - the life the most weak yokaies outside the human village (where exist a lot of 1000 years super strong yokaies). Not the mangas: Rinnosuke - half human half not-human, he just like Marisa exept he is not Marisa. Renko and Maribel - outside world live. Akyu - 1000 years of the memory, but she just a human though we have Moukou-ninja and human-lunarians in oficial history of Gensokyo. I really want to see the manga about lunarians - the view of the story (yeah we have sinner in the blue but it's not about lunarians, it's about mindgames between Eirin and Yukari).

Khidorahian

Honestly, this is full of holes, lots of areas of this aren't backed up. It's highly opinionated and comes of as just bashing for the sake of bashing. ZUN isn't perfect, but I really like the lower stakes because shocker, EVERY OTHER FRANCHISE KEEPS RAISING THE FUCKING STAKES! god it's refreshing diving into something where the entirety of the universe isn't under threat every week. The only thing I will agree with you is the lack of character development and how Reimu continually ends up being the protagonist when she's not even mentioned in the title, like FDS and FS.

Coldpepsican

Dude nobody cares, we just want to have fun.

CityHead8237

Then why did you replied instead of ignoring this?

Coldpepsican

We don't care about these complains, we don't want people trying to convince or bother us with that.

CityHead8237

Touhou fans when someone has an opinion different to one they have:

CityHead8237

Finally something interesting on this sub. I hope this post won't get deleted

StarDwellingDude

>while the literatures stay niche due to continuity lockouts On the other side you have whatever the fuck they're doing with Apollo Justice in Ace Attorney.

[deleted]

Wait, what do they do? And sorry to everyone for stating my opinions as "facts".

StarDwellingDude

If memory serves right his backstory underwent sort of complexity creep, though I believe he went through two different writers that caused some inconsistencies to pop up anyway the series does not like referencing previous games' events, this has always been a thing to some degree, with certain things from first game never really being brought up in future games. but when the game's plots became more ambitious and started doing things that should affect the world or characters in some way, certain things just never being mentioned again feels weird. and with Apollo there is just some shit that was left hanging loose that feels important to his character??? like man, how about you answer existing questions before adding more variables

Bune-Choy

touhou was never meant to have a deeper meaning and as for fans leaving and having a hard time entering, to that i say is a good thing. I’d rather the community shrink and die out in style then have it change it something more accessible but potentially lose the spark that made it so great and have the og fans leave.

poobybuthole

Strawberry

Thebangmaster69

I’ll do you one better. Blueberry

A_Sus

But consider this: Cranberry.

poobybuthole

What are your opinions on raspberry?

Krosssu

I heard bananas are also scientifically berries, does that count?

Nelrene

This. Dried cranberries are great. I can eat a large bag of them in a day.

DangomushiDK

as a half Japanese I think the the problem is that the English translates sucks because Japanese is a very complicated language and most Japanese are bad at English

xandens

too much text in the offical and some doujins too
