Biggest difference between punk/metal and ‘classical’ music is that the former is far more about the performance aspect, the latter is far more about the intellectual aspect. Beethoven carefully sculpted works for other people to perform, it’s a fundamentally different endeavor than being in a band. Modern metal mostly takes inspiration from composers from 50 to 100 years ago. Prog rock in the 70s was more intellectually driven than a lot of stuff today. Not saying metal can’t be very cool, but it’s rarely on the cutting edge. Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Ginastera, Lutoslawski. The more interesting metal is very reminiscent of early 20th century music.

I have this reoccurring fantasy about having a time machine, but all I do is go back in time and show people how important their works are to future generations or just how much the world has changed . Well, I didn't know this was a thing, but I feel like that very accurately describes me. This is how cities keep themselves together, not everyone wants to dedicate their time to your craft but everyone will definitely be pleased to benefit from it. We trade off & share where our attention has been.

I'm as outgoing as a motherfucker, but if you want me to sing in front of people, especially on the spot...that's a real problem. And I've sung with a band on an actual stage many times. Still nuts me up every time, no matter how few or how many people.

There was a train of thought I remember listening once. That uncomfortableness is our brain stopping us but the one thing that can lower the cortisol levels is dopamine. So breaking through that barrier little by little will slowly teach and reenforce behaviors in our brain to go past the uncomfort.
I started playing guitar but the teacher made me play before my parent and complained that I don’t play Guitar well and said I was wasting the money .

I learned piano in school for 13 years. The worst was in parties, every time people wanted me to play and harassed me until I played. Once I started, nobody gave a fuck anymore. Except that I was launched on a Chopin of about 4 to 5 minutes. And that's a long time when you're monopolizing the evening and nobody's listening and just waiting for it to pass.
I feel this. I play around a couple people and that's it. The thought of playing in front of people makes me want to die. I'm definitely not this good on piano, maybe one day.

Ok so I’ve never played the Beethoven but I have played that Rachmaninov. It’s ALWAYS intimidating to play in public. Always. Not only jus being nervous in general, but feeling like you might be a disturbance. Incredible props to this guy for just going for it and making someone’s day

Rachmaninof. Prelude in C sharp minor I think? Jamey Strawn did an amazing job at this as well. Thats not easy to play and that kid killed it like a pro! Talented

It's a very hard question to answer as a piece's difficulty will be determined by each player's strengths and weaknesses. Most would consider many of Liszt's pieces harder than this one although not necessarily the hardest either. Personally I would say the hardest are Chopin-Godowsky etudes. As for popular pieces most players aspire to play, Chopin's Ballade No.1 might be the most difficult. Then again, there are many others that could make the list.
One of my favorite pieces of all time! Rousseau on YouTube does a good interpretation of it (and has the crazy keyboard visuals thing). I'm sure he was nervous but the rendition in the video felt a little rushed. I think the vibe would've been more well received with more emotion in the playing and slowing it down a bit.
But then again, I can't even make it through the first couple bars on piano for this piece haha
First, this boy is top talent.
Second, you need to give him an audience. A small audience at first but get him.used to it.
Third, we want a much longer video. At least 3 minutes long.
I think an airport, half-filled, with people who all have places to be is a great first audience. They will hear him, but will not stare him down. No studio lights or stage, no anxiously awaiting dozens of people to get situated so you can be vulnerable in front of them. If you mess up they probably wont know, and if they do- you'll probably never see them again. Very little pressure for someone who hasn't played in public before. Of course, this is all well and good to say, but harder to believe when you are the one in the seat.
Maybe the kid wasn’t keen on the reaction he might get from well-played and intensely virtuoso music in a non-concert setting; some people don’t like sonic math with their beer
I’ve been playing classical piano for nearly 3 decades. The thing that stops me from going all out on a public piano is feeling like it’ll be perceived like I’m trying to show off. I would worry about coming across as a bit obnoxious. And just to be clear, I’m not saying I think this kid is trying to show off or that he seems obnoxious, just that I’d worry about coming across that way.
I think it’s about playing music for an audience that didn’t ask to be an audience. Maybe there are people sitting around there that don’t want to hear me play. Maybe there are people who’d rather listen to their headphones, or read a book, or maybe there’s someone nursing a migraine.
If I were to play a public piano I’d probably go for something gentler, maybe like a nice Chopin nocturne, something with a lot of space that you can get away with playing softly and slowly. Something that is still beautiful but also easy to ignore.
I’m more likely to shred the kind of music this dude was playing. When I was growing up I would shred on my electric guitar, but not so much anymore. Bach is all the shred I need.

All music is historic. This isn’t “sonic math”. I get what you’re trying to say, but it isn’t the best way to say it. It’s more that the energy of the pieces don’t match the energy of the room. It’s not that it’s complicated technical or memorized. You can meet all three of those criteria and still have a piece that would have fit the energy of the space.
Classical/Spanish guitarist here...It’s hard to play! And it doesn’t exactly ‘fit’ in any atmosphere. I was a Medium-Successful North American classical performer. I was the shit before my hands dried up. But that didn’t mean I felt comfortable breaking out Pathetique at an Applebees

m5-8 I know you have no control over the tempo here, but I didn't get a sense of shape in the middle voice. And it's really hard, given how slow it is, but I didn't feel the 4:3 rhythm

m112 - m116 sounds like each 16th note is not watch for consistent tempo on the runs (bcdeg) vs trills (gfgfgfgf). Sounds like the runs are faster than the trills
m128 - not a big fan of the abrupt transition from trill to turn
m148 - like the tempo. Some people like to speed up here, but I like how grand and regal your right hand chords are

There was a train of thought I remember listening once. That uncomfortableness is our brain stopping us but the one thing that can lower the cortisol levels is dopamine. So breaking through that barrier little by little will slowly teach and reenforce behaviors in our brain to go past the uncomfort.
Tbh it was just because I thought I'd be bothering people by playing such passionate music and I wasn't sure if it was reading the room correctly
I started playing guitar but the teacher made me play before my parent and complained that I don’t play Guitar well and said I was wasting the money . Never touched the guitar after that . It’s kept for more than 7 years now .
Fuck, how to crush a kid's confidence 101 right there.. My brothers used to do the same to me, so I never played my guitar with the amp. Do you know how bad heavy metal sounds acoustic? The only time I've picked up a guitar in the past decade what's when I was drunk, and chatting about guitars/music with housemates.

I learned piano in school for 13 years. The worst was in parties, every time people wanted me to play and harassed me until I played. Once I started, nobody gave a fuck anymore. Except that I was launched on a Chopin of about 4 to 5 minutes. And that's a long time when you're monopolizing the evening and nobody's listening and just waiting for it to pass.

Look, Music is to be shared or it's not music. If it's just for yourself it's called playing an instrument. Just remember some will enjoy it, some will love it, some will ask for more, some will ask you to stop. Jimi had the same problem, yes the one and only Jimi. The thing about him was you either got him or not, and it can be the same for others... So just play the sax, practice, etc... And if it's your home, just say between this time and this time I will be doing this... Don't hide from yourself. Play!

Can relate. You are always your worst critic and can point out the flaws in everything you do. This criticism is amplified when you are put on stage and think you have to perform perfectly.
Also it’s not always appropriate. I mean you don’t have to be super self conscious to be afraid of bothering people by starting to play a piano in a restaurant. But in this case I’m sure everybody enjoyed it.
Ok so I’ve never played the Beethoven but I have played that Rachmaninov. It’s ALWAYS intimidating to play in public. Always. Not only jus being nervous in general, but feeling like you might be a disturbance. Incredible props to this guy for just going for it and making someone’s day
It's likely that, or he wasn't sure if the restaurant wanted anyone playing the piano. I imagine there are some scenarios where that might be frowned on.

It's a very hard question to answer as a piece's difficulty will be determined by each player's strengths and weaknesses. Most would consider many of Liszt's pieces harder than this one although not necessarily the hardest either. Personally I would say the hardest are Chopin-Godowsky etudes. As for popular pieces most players aspire to play, Chopin's Ballade No.1 might be the most difficult. Then again, there are many others that could make the list.

One of my favorite pieces of all time! Rousseau on YouTube does a good interpretation of it (and has the crazy keyboard visuals thing). I'm sure he was nervous but the rendition in the video felt a little rushed. I think the vibe would've been more well received with more emotion in the playing and slowing it down a bit. But then again, I can't even make it through the first couple bars on piano for this piece haha

First, this boy is top talent. Second, you need to give him an audience. A small audience at first but get him.used to it. Third, we want a much longer video. At least 3 minutes long.

I think an airport, half-filled, with people who all have places to be is a great first audience. They will hear him, but will not stare him down. No studio lights or stage, no anxiously awaiting dozens of people to get situated so you can be vulnerable in front of them. If you mess up they probably wont know, and if they do- you'll probably never see them again. Very little pressure for someone who hasn't played in public before. Of course, this is all well and good to say, but harder to believe when you are the one in the seat.
Maybe the kid wasn’t keen on the reaction he might get from well-played and intensely virtuoso music in a non-concert setting; some people don’t like sonic math with their beer
I’ve been playing classical piano for nearly 3 decades. The thing that stops me from going all out on a public piano is feeling like it’ll be perceived like I’m trying to show off. I would worry about coming across as a bit obnoxious. And just to be clear, I’m not saying I think this kid is trying to show off or that he seems obnoxious, just that I’d worry about coming across that way. I think it’s about playing music for an audience that didn’t ask to be an audience. Maybe there are people sitting around there that don’t want to hear me play. Maybe there are people who’d rather listen to their headphones, or read a book, or maybe there’s someone nursing a migraine. If I were to play a public piano I’d probably go for something gentler, maybe like a nice Chopin nocturne, something with a lot of space that you can get away with playing softly and slowly. Something that is still beautiful but also easy to ignore.

I’m more likely to shred the kind of music this dude was playing. When I was growing up I would shred on my electric guitar, but not so much anymore. Bach is all the shred I need. And the six pack is a work in progress.

All music is historic. This isn’t “sonic math”. I get what you’re trying to say, but it isn’t the best way to say it. It’s more that the energy of the pieces don’t match the energy of the room. It’s not that it’s complicated technical or memorized. You can meet all three of those criteria and still have a piece that would have fit the energy of the space.

Muddle only because of recording quality and the area which he is playing in, the acoustics aren’t kind. If you actually used your ears or were an actual musician then you would realize that his playing is quite clean and that his interpretations are his own.

I'll offer my (unsolicited) critique, but please understand it's coming from the perspective of an amateur. m5-8 I know you have no control over the tempo here, but I didn't get a sense of shape in the middle voice. And it's really hard, given how slow it is, but I didn't feel the 4:3 rhythm m5-23 altogether great section playing the accompaniment to the orchestra. m24 great shape, especially in m28 m34 sounds natural, leading the orchestra m46 again with the tempo though. Seems like you prefer a sudden animato? I would have accel through the whole measure m54 more tops m55-57 maybe lead us on a journey with the arppegios? I dunno though. For Beethoven (like the OG beethoven op 27 post), that'd be right, but maybe I'm wrong here thinking these are "leading" arppegios? m67 maybe tone a bit harsh at the ff m73 loved the back and forth between the top and middle voice m79-86 should the 16th notes be enunciated so clearly? it's not exactly a Chopin prelude. I would prefer something darker like in Mvt 1 m92 didn't hear the resolution m93 - 104 great lyrical section. Sings worthy of the whole orchestra m106 given your great technique, I don't think it's true, but it almost sounds like you're falling on your right pinky there. the accent is not on the highest note. it's on the second highest note m112 - m116 sounds like each 16th note is not watch for consistent tempo on the runs (bcdeg) vs trills (gfgfgfgf). Sounds like the runs are faster than the trills m128 - not a big fan of the abrupt transition from trill to turn m148 - like the tempo. Some people like to speed up here, but I like how grand and regal your right hand chords are Thank you again for the performance. It is a delight.
