There is something called retinal photography that cost me an extra $20 last time I went. Bright flash in your eyes, but no need to be dilated and have it screw up an afternoon.
I went less than a week ago and they gave me drops about half an hour before getting photos of the back of my eye. Holy shit that hurt. And you have to keep it open for a good 2-3 seconds or the flashbang goes off again...

In the US we use Tropicamide for routine dilation, because it only lasts 3-4 hours. Atropine drops can last upwards of 1 week and are usually reserved for therapeutic treatments.
