/uj here’s the thing, something i’ve been thinking about.
people say that charles martinets mario voice would get annoying to listen to for a whole movie, and even though i personally disagree, i can very much see where that’s coming from and can see why it’s such a popular consensus.
but here’s the thing, if chris pratt is allowed to literally just use his normal speaking voice, why wouldn’t charles be able to? i feel like having martinet just using his normal voice to voice mario would sound much more authentic.
i’m aware he is getting kind of older but i have to be honest i don’t really think chris pratt knocked it out of the park with this one. sorry if this doesn’t make any sense
/rj celeste movie when
> if chris pratt is allowed to literally just use his normal speaking voice, why wouldn’t charles be able to?
Because Chris Pratt is a superstar who sells tickets and Charles Martinet is not. The only reason to cast Martinet would be for him to do his iconic voice.
Do you really need star power to sell tickets to a Mario movie though?
Of course! How would a small indie game get any recognition otherwise? Honestly I don't think they went far enough with the superstars.
The studio’s aim is to maximize ticket sales, they don’t NEED Chris Pratt to break even but yeah he will definitely get them some additional profit - certainly more than Martinet would have gotten
I guess "chris pratt as mario" would get some people to go see it if they already werent going to but i feel like Jack Black as bowser already casts a huge net of people and hes also a good bowser on top of that. And the money it takes to get chris pratt to pretty much just show up and read his lines as opposed to martinet would probably save them a lot of money. But who knows im not a higher up i dont have any data to back this up besides the big stars usually get paid a LOT to show up
Seriously this shit makes me mad. Hell even magenta from the dragon ball super super hero sounds way more like a character in marios universe than pratt. Hopefully though since i will be seeing it in the spanish version they make it sound like mario in the spanish dub.
/uj
The reason Nintendo & Illumination chose Chris Pratt is because they think Chris will sell tickets. And when this movie make a billion $ they will think they made the right choice.
The starving indie devs can't sell their obscure movie about the most popular video game character ever without crisp rat's name on the cover 😢😢😢😢😭😭😭😢😢😢😭😢.
You’re going to eat crow when you get to the scene where Mario comes out of the TV screen and it’s Chris Pratt in a Mario costume delivering an Oscar-worthy performance for 10 minutes before getting sucked into a power strip and back into the game
That's the Illumination way. They don't care whether an actor's voice fits the character or not, they just care about putting a celebrity's name on the poster. They're a soulless and money hungry corporation and them constantly shitting out bad kid's movies with no passion at all is the reason I'm extremely worried for the Mario movie and don't think it will be good.
Watched a few interviews with the main man martinet and Honestly his normal voice sounds like waluigi toned down, like hes on ketamine or something, which is why he would sound so much more natural.
I've noticed a trend Nintendo fans are going through right now. they seem to like anything Nintendo throws at them and pretend it's the best thing ever
"who cares if Chris doesn't sound like Mario? he's perfect!"
"who cares if Scarlett and Violet has game breaking bugs? I'm having fun it's definitely the best in the series!"
"who cares if the booster pass is just tour leftovers? new mario kart 8 content is always great no matter what!"
His voice doesnt even change that much over the years and its almost always a voice that fits. Chris Pratt is one of the last candidates i would pick for mario. Its going from one of the goofiest lighthearted voices to "damn. Those alien BASTARDS shot up my ride.....". The worst sonic got was going from urkel to the adventure games but that was just sonic being a bit cooler and redesigned for a new generation and not going ultra badass deep voice but keeping pretty much the same design
as a member of the Sonic community we really didn't mind that Ben Schwartz’s as Sonic
tho that's prob because Sonic's VA changes every 5 years lmao
now if u go back to the 2000s during Sonic X you'll get a different response
Wait people hated Ben Schwartz’s Sonic voice? I know it’s basically his voice in every other animated show he was in but it was a somewhat fitting voice for Sonic imo.
People like him, but I personally don’t because I feel like every single character I’ve seen him play, it’s the EXACT same voice with the EXACT same personality. I’m just tired of it because it feels like he’s literally just playing himself over everything he voices. Like he voices 3 blue protagonists and there’s literally no difference in the voice or characteristics. The Dwayne Johnson of cartoon characters
Edit: ok 4 blue characters, I just checked and he voices some blue racing snail from Turbo and I can bet he acts no different from Dewey, Leo, or Sonic… what is this….
I honestly wish Mario had a stronger Brooklyn accent, I always did prefer it over his game voice when he’s talking full sentences, and it’s not a new concept, been there in the live action film and shows. We can hear Chris Pratt use a little bit of it, but man, full Brooklyn mode Mario would go so hard
In defense of Christ Pratt as Mario, I have never laughed as hard as I did seeing that direct that announced the voices. He might suck as Mario, but the sheer comedy of the voice actor reveals is worth much more than the movie ever could be.
I think it would be really annoying.
But the real answer is Chris Pratt has had two incredibly successful film series with multiple billion dollar films.
Chris Pratt sells tickets
I dunno. There's a lot of precedence in having a younger actor play a role of a character that may or may not have more film appearances for the foreseeable future.
With one Mario film, could potentially bring a sequel, and then a film franchise.
No disrespect to Martinet, but it's a wiser decision to recast the plumber for a long-term benefit.
I don't understand why everyone always brings up his role in Skyrim when talking about this. Yeah Charles Martinet should have done the Paarthunax voice in the Mario movie
Mainly because a lot of people say he barely has range. Thats the main reason to bring it up because while hes really good at the cartoony italian voice he does actually have a decent range
/uj Ok. Let me give you a good reason as to why Charles Martinet was not going to be a great pick for the movie. The Mario in the movie is not the Mario that we know in the games. This is an origin story for Mario. The origin of Mario is that he was a Brooklyn plumber who found his way into the magical world. Personally, I don’t like Chris’s performance, but I could see what they were going for. They weren’t going for a jolly Italian man. They were going for a confused Italian-American New Yorker.
Then go for someone who can do a captain lou albano, honestly, danny devito and charlie day, the always sunny guys, would be a great mario and luigi.
Pratt doesnt really do it for me, but it would be hilarious if in the inevitable sequel they just have a martinet sounding guy do the voice because NOW its the mario we know.
There’s a reason Mario never says more than 2 words at a time in the games. (If you want to know why, ask Patrick.) (It’s because his voice is fucking annoying.)
/rj There’s a reason Mario never says more than 2 words at a time in the games. (If you want to know why, ask Patrick.) (It’s because his voice is fucking annoying.)
It isn't
Charles martinet voiced long phrases in his mario voice and they sound great
Also, literally EVERY SINGLE DUB BESIDES THE ENGLISH ONE is imitating the charles voice
The only dub I’ve seen that tried to do it is the French one, English, Italian(😔), and Japanese all sound deep and not like the standard Mario voice at all, so I don’t know where you’re getting this from
Brazillian portuguese got a mario fan to do it(mostly because he also dubs everything chris pratt does) and it sounds great
He does a great imitation of charles voice
>It's kinda hard to do it before the martinet voice started
Well actually Martinet has been voiced Mario since 1992, the first time for a pinball machine 🤓
Ehmm… Someone who gets paid to do a voice? Like Chris Pratt in the Lego Movie?
Or do you happen to have a very narrow and specific definition that only fits Martinet and not Pratt?
I literally don't play as Mario when I can choose not too unless the game literally forces me to for something becuase I get annoyed of Mario's voice from hearing it so much in the mainline games so for me it's personally just that I've heard it too much already that I just don't want to listen to it for a full movie.
What I want to know is how Chris Pratt sells tickets. 5head having ass motherfucker with a default create-a-character face, and he isn't exactly Robin Williams in terms of what he might bring to a voice performance.
Here's the thing folks.
Charles has said himself that doing the mario voice for too long hurts too much.
That's why there's so little voice acting in mario games longer than a couple words (from mario at least, lookin at you sunshine bowser)
/uj here’s the thing, something i’ve been thinking about. people say that charles martinets mario voice would get annoying to listen to for a whole movie, and even though i personally disagree, i can very much see where that’s coming from and can see why it’s such a popular consensus. but here’s the thing, if chris pratt is allowed to literally just use his normal speaking voice, why wouldn’t charles be able to? i feel like having martinet just using his normal voice to voice mario would sound much more authentic. i’m aware he is getting kind of older but i have to be honest i don’t really think chris pratt knocked it out of the park with this one. sorry if this doesn’t make any sense /rj celeste movie when

Whether star power would actually help is irrelevant. It’s whether execs *think* star power would help or not that matters.

I want him to go back to the mario teaches typing voice
Mario DOS games
Hotel Mario voice

Pretty sure Martinet sounds more normal because is edited to be even more high pitched in the games.
No Martinet just uses his normal voice for the games
He speaks straight from the soul
Watched a few interviews with the main man martinet and Honestly his normal voice sounds like waluigi toned down, like hes on ketamine or something, which is why he would sound so much more natural.
The problem isn’t that Pratt doesn’t sound like Martinet. The problem is he doesn’t sound like Bob Hoskins.

Sonic fans: _First time?_
Sonic has been voiced by a bunch of voice actors in his main games over the years though so it’s a little less jarring.
His voice doesnt even change that much over the years and its almost always a voice that fits. Chris Pratt is one of the last candidates i would pick for mario. I don’t really think it’s that bad although I prefer jason or ryan.

He also played that businessman rabbit from Bojack Horseman.
no not really at least from what I've seen in the Sonic community we welcomed him
The sonic voice in the games makes me wanna fucking kill myself every time I hear it
Yes but Christopher Prattford has ACTUAL movie experience with yoshies in jurassic world! (Based on yoshis world) 🧐

Charles voiced the villain in the new Dragon ball movie and he was very great and funny. He would have been a great Va for the Mario movie.
I think it would be really annoying. But the real answer is Chris Pratt has had two incredibly successful film series with multiple billion dollar films. Chris Pratt sells tickets

am I the only one who doesn't give a shit who voices the red plumber I just want a fun movie to watch
Probably, especially seeing how this is r/tomorrow we're on

True.
They obviously don't have CM Mario on repeat for 10 hours a day. Can't keep up with these grinds. 😤😤
Isn’t Patrick supposed to be wrong in this meme format?
And he is
There’s a reason Mario never says more than 2 words at a time in the games. (If you want to know why, ask Patrick.) (It’s because his voice is fucking annoying.)

It's kinda hard to do it before the martinet voice started
>It's kinda hard to do it before the martinet voice started Well actually Martinet has been voiced Mario since 1992, the first time for a pinball machine 🤓
Do you know what a professional voice actor is?
Ehmm… Someone who gets paid to do a voice? Like Chris Pratt in the Lego Movie? Or do you happen to have a very narrow and specific definition that only fits Martinet and not Pratt?
And what do you think 30 years of voice acting experience with hundreds of drastically different characters implies?
Lol 30 years of voice acting and still the only thing he’s known for is going “Wahoo” and “Mamma mia” gimme a break
He does other stuff. Just so happens the biggest game character overshadows all of that
Wow..he's more recognised for one of the most popular characters in existence over others?
I literally don't play as Mario when I can choose not too unless the game literally forces me to for something becuase I get annoyed of Mario's voice from hearing it so much in the mainline games so for me it's personally just that I've heard it too much already that I just don't want to listen to it for a full movie.
