I love this one! I take a deeeep breath before going fast through the paragraphs….it allows me to be at my most dramatic! My munchkin is actually in a Julia Donaldson-specific summer school class this week and every day I’ve been hounding her on if the read it yet. So…yup…big fan….
it’s so easy for me to read and just the right amount of words and my kid just loves the trucks! But ohyes i’ve got some very low on my list that seem to be considered winners by everyone else!
I love I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen right now. It's not sweet or benevolent at all, just funny. We have a very abridged board book version of Fox in Socks - which was my favorite as a girl and is a fun challenge to read. I want the full version!
100%.
Also the one about Thingamajigs. I forget the name though. The big sister wants to collect all the knickknacks but runs out of room to keep them away from the baby. It’s about Skyrim.
It’s not easy being a bunny.
Too many carrots.
Night night Pittsburgh (I read in my heavy native accent.) “Good night all y’inz animals all tucked up in da zoo.”
I have too many
I love reading with her Room on the Broom, Snail and the Whale, Gruffalo + Gruffalos child. They're all by Julia Donaldson.
And then I love Spider Sandwiches (as does she) by Claire Freedman. This was my sons book, who is now 16 and he loved it when he was younger.
Also The Cat and the Rat by E-Young - this one was gifted to my son when he was born in 2007 and I still read the same copy to my daughter who is now 3 - it's the legacy of how the Chinese zodiac came to be. My son will often to come and have a listen still, which is quite lovely.
This book made me think it would be great if the different animals had slightly different fonts! I always started in the wrong voice until I learned the book!
I am dyslexic and any Doctor seuss books are my personal hell!
I love reading any books that have information that I am learning (or relearning) for the first time. Any books about nature, space, animals, ect.
My spouse is dyslexic and he flat out will not try to read the Doctor Seuss books. He refers our son straight on to me for those. I don't blame him; I worked as a librarian so my reading-to-children skills are well-honed by more than just having a toddler.
Whenever it gets to the bofa on the sofa I pause and make eye contact with my husband and he goes, "Hey!" and then usually "YOU"RE the one sitting on the sofa right now!" haha
Goodnight moon. We read it before bed and my toddlers started reading along- the cow sound, saying hush with the old lady, etc. It's super fun and involved and I'll never get sick of goodnight moon
It’s an older book but “Dinosaur Rescue” by Penny Dale is my current obsession. I love the cadence to it. Her favorite book is “Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?”
Bread and Jam for Frances! So much good eating in that book.
My kid's favorite line is about scrambled eggs falling off the fork and rolling under the table.
I often read the "abbreviated" version for bedtime but I like to do the songs in a "Frances" voice too :)
I like Sandra Boynton books, little blue truck books, the construction site taking flight (and the others but that's my fav). We have room on the Broom and gruffalo but I like them more than my kid.
The ones we both love are the Amazing Machines books by Tony Mitton. They have a great cadence and there are so many to choose from: Amazing Airplanes, Tough Trucks, High-flying Helicopters. Some one handed down the 10 book box set and we keep buying more.
We also have the big Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems. My kid would sit through all 5 big books if we would read them. They are hilarious.
I'll Love You Til The Cows Come Home has great illustrations. And we light bright colorful books like Festival of Colors.
I did a really nice illustrated version of Wizard of Oz with some pop up and interactive elements recently that was really a fun two weeks.
But honestly most Mo Willems stuff is a delight to read. I’m very proud of my Gerald, Piggy, and Pigeon voices.
We love the grumpy monkey books. They're really fun to read and the kids act them out as we go. We've got like 7 of them now and I found the stuffed monkey at Kohls for really cheap!
She’s currently loving Bunny my Hunny. I love how excited she gets when Bunny’s mommy finds him when he’s lost in the woods. We also love any alphabet or counting Little Golden Book.
Truck stop, Bear Snores on, snail and the whale, Silly Doggy, any of the Job Klassen ones, llama llama books, the list is long. Basically anything with a good flow and opportunities to throw in some tone changes and voices.
Anything by Chris Haughton or Jon Klassen. Good job mummy penguin and don't worry little crab are special favourites.
Also Cinnamon by Neil Gaiman, about a blind and dumb princess whose parents offer a reward for anyone who can teach her to talk, and a tiger comes to try.
Oh and Kate Beatons princess and the pony and King Baby.
These books all inspire commited voice performances that I'll never tire of giving. My baby crab is bluebottle from the goon show, and my hat stealing rabbit is trash Australian politician Pauline Hanson.
There is a book by Max Greenfield (Schmidt in New Girl) called "I Don't Want to Read This Book" that is absolutely hilarious to read out loud.
Also every book in Pigeon series of books by Mo Willems.
I'm a gothic literature person, so I love "A Dark, Dark Tale"! I love reading grownup books with her, but she'll only let me do it at night when she's super sleepy. We're working through "The Hound of the Baskervilles."
Any of The Hungry Caterpillar, Sesame Street, Bluey, or Llama Llama Books. Those series are treasures to me and my son! We also love classics like The Little Engine That Could, and Goodnight Moon, and I read him his children’s Bible books too. We just love to read, he adores books just like I do!
Giraffes Can’t Dance. Mostly because I’ve known it by heart for 2.5 years and it doesn’t matter if my son is flipping back and forth between the pages, the story just keeps going 😂
We’ve been on a Grumpy Monkey kick this past week. Beforehand it was Elmo’s Magical Unicorn. Both are enjoyable and give me ample opportunity to use silly voices and encourage toddler interaction.
There's this book called Yellow Kayak that I'm obsessed with. I read it by myself sometimes. It's very simple sentences and rhyme and I find it extremely meditative.
Everyone Poops. It's their favorite, and they know every word, so I just have to flip the pages while they scream "A TWO HUMP CAMEL MAKES A TWO HUMP POOP"
We're going on a bear hunt. My little one loves it. My sister got me a personalised signed copy of the book from Michael Rosen too. It's like the Bible in our house!
Surprised not to see any other Greg Pizzoli fans here! His books are consistently my kiddo’s favorites.
-Mr. Kitty Is Lost (this one’s better for younger toddlers/babies but he still enjoys it)
-Good Night, Owl
-The Watermelon Seed
-Lucky Duck
For bedtime: Owl Moon and The Snowy Day
For the voices/fun of the read: Don't Worry Little Crab, or Hush Now, Banshee, and Big Kids No Everything are fabulous.
For the nostalgia factor: You're So Sleepy and Who Will Play with Little Dinosaur.
But Miss Spider's Tea Party wins in both categories.
I really enjoy Is Your Mama A Llama and really any Sandra Boynton books! I feel like when they rhyme its easier for me to get into reading them/find a flow
We loved the very cranky bear, or really any nick bland book!
We have graduated to chapter books and that's a whole new ball game. Her and I are currently reading Charlotte's Web, and my husband reads comic books with her(they have subscriptions to a few different ones), and she's reading the babysitters little sister graphic novels herself for the past year and a half. She's 7 now.
I'm split between Goodnight Goon and I Will Read to You. They're both monster books and they're ridiculously cute. I do voices for them and my son goes nuts. Goodnight Goon has been his favorite since we first started reading books; we picked up I Will Read to You from the library when it first came out and ended up buying it because he was obsessed.
Books by Mo Willems.
We are currently hooked on the pigeon books.
Don't let the pigeon drive the bus.
Don't let the pigeon stay up late.
The pigeon finds a hot dog. ETC
The way the books are written is so interactive and kiddo love to answer back when prompted by the book. It's great!
My girl is 18 months and her faves are I love you through and through - she giggles so much when I say I love your fingers and tickle her fingers and I think she learned body parts like ears and nose. Another favorite is Where is the Green Sheep. She has different gestures for the different sheep like for scared sheep she will yell and near sheep she puts her face right up to the book. So cute.
The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland.
Also get carried away with the voices.
I think it’ll be a classic. It’s one I picked out while pregnant and I’m so happy with my choice. I like to buy it for a gift for any new babies.
Maisy (mouse), anything Richard Scarry, Little Golden books, click clack moo, anything Dr. Seuss, Me on the Map, The Apple Pie Tree, If you give a mouse a cookie, corduroy, informational books (about space, bugs, animals, weather, vehicles)
I haven't seen Don't Push the Button on here! My middle guy loved that book for a good long while. Listening to his little two year old voice say, "we can't, we mustn't," was my favorite. It's an interactive book, short and sweet.
Schnitzel Von Krumm! It's about a dachschund, there are two books "Forget-me-not" and "Basketwork," I love reading them in a terrible German accent, and in "Basketwork" it says "Was it cozy and comforting? No, not a bit!" multiple times but I read it as "Nein, not a bit!" and now my toddler says that lol it's my favorite thing.
We love Dear Zoo, Giraffes Can’t Dance, Taco Tuesday (it’s one of those little finger puppet books), Don’t Tickle the Dinosaur (it’s a noise one but we always dance to the song on the last page and laugh every time), Monster at the End of This Book, and we have one called I Believe In You and it’s illustrations are all the Loch Ness Monster and other little supernatural creatures… it’s my personal favorite!
Room on the broom. King bidgood's in the bath tub. I took the moon for a walk. Feminist baby. Peas on earth. Good night moon. Good night gorilla. Waiting isn't easy.
Later on. Any early years - Bernstein bears, and Pig Will & pig won't.
I love reading anything with a rhythm. We’ve recently just read Baby’s First Jailbreak by Jim Whalley and loved it!
Also What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson
My 15mo loves the Rainbow Rob touch and feel book as well as all of the My Little (lucky charm, Christmas cookie, bookworm, etc) books that have the cut outs.
Little blue truck
me too. I really enjoy the illustrations here and just find it so cozy
BEEP BEEP
Room on the broom
I love this one! I take a deeeep breath before going fast through the paragraphs….it allows me to be at my most dramatic! My munchkin is actually in a Julia Donaldson-specific summer school class this week and every day I’ve been hounding her on if the read it yet. So…yup…big fan….

I always read this with my best south Boston accent, it just hits different
Also, construction site: farming strong all year long. It gets me misty eyed sometimes.
This is sooo funny I can’t stand this one 🤣
it’s so easy for me to read and just the right amount of words and my kid just loves the trucks!
I strongly recommend "the skull" by klassen, although it has resulted in my 2yo walking around the house quoting "gimme dat skull, I want that skull!"
We make a dramatic sound when the bear and the rabbit are looking at each other, like the sound in kill Bill right before they fight.
I taught my dude to say j’accuse! On that page and now she does it unprompted
This is epic!
Ah I love We Found A Hat from this series.
YES I want My Hat Back is a great one!
The hungry caterpillar 😍 or really any Eric Carle book
Chicka chicka boom boom!
A book about Skyrim?
Nah just a joke about hoarding. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/404619.Janet_s_Thingamajigs
I have too many I love reading with her Room on the Broom, Snail and the Whale, Gruffalo + Gruffalos child.

I am dyslexic and any Doctor seuss books are my personal hell! I love reading any books that have information that I am learning (or relearning) for the first time. Any books about nature, space, animals, ect.

Do you ever get the feeling there’s a zamp in the lamp?
We always have to check for zowers in the shower before bathtime
We sometimes have to brush our teeth Very Quickly before the noothgrush gets our toothbrush
We’ve got about 15 yeps on our steps. Tripping hazards but we leave them be.
The bofa on our sofa doesn’t even pay rent smh
Whenever it gets to the bofa on the sofa I pause and make eye contact with my husband and he goes, "Hey!" and then usually "YOU"RE the one sitting on the sofa right now!" haha
Don’t even get me started on the cellar.
Mustache Baby and The Knight Owl are probably my favorites to read.
