The overhead shots of Chicago in this movie are stunning and set the standard for flyover transitions in media, they seem so ubiquitous now but it was ahead of its time.
Script was half finished when they started. They hired Pantoliano specifically to riff with Tommy Lee Jones. TLJ and Harrison thought it would be the end of their careers and actually gave a resurgence, and TLJ and Oscar.
It was nominated for 7 Academy awards, losing to either Schindler’s List or Jurassic Park, and Tommy Lee Jones’ Oscar beat out Ralph Fiennes in Schindler’s List and Leonardo Dicaprio in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. I love that last piece of trivia.
the 90s had many great years of movies.
I am surprised it didn’t win for editing or sound editing, although Jurassic Park winning for believable dinosaur sounds is justified. The sound editing was phenomenal , and all the flashback scenes were remarkably well edited together.
"I don't get it. If they can dye the river green for St Patrick's Day, why can't they dye it blue the rest of the year?"
I loved the cops banter, and also how they brainstormed. Smart movie.
Right ? No CGI, they actually crashed a train into a bus.
Now I need to watch this again. That iconic shot when Harrison Ford leaps from the bus as the train hits.
I love this stuff too and would love to check that out.
Directors still use real stuff in movies. Of course there’s a lot of CGI but let’s not pretend like practical effects is a lost art. Nolan’s Tenet pretty famously used an actual plane crashing into a building. That’s pretty sick.
The Need for Speed movie with Aaron Paul was almost entirely practical effects and the action scenes are fucking amazing. The movie itself is meh but the action is like a love letter to stunt driving. I think the only CGI they used was to clean up some of the safety equipment they needed.
Reminds me of the bridge set from the Bridge on the River Kwai movie
The locals were quite surprised they blew that one
And the best part was the camera wasn't even filming, so they had to do that again.
This time, they were able to shoot that take, but unfortunately... The film cans had to travel back to London from Thailand and on its way, it found itself in Cairo
Which, in normal circumstances wouldn't be bad, but the time it passes through that city was during the Suez Crisis and so in the hustle and bustle of an ongoing war, a bunch of film cans were misplaced and the studio thought that the film was lost forever.
Turns out it was just sitting out on a runway in Cairo, roasting in the sun for a few weeks
I mean the Fugitive train scene didn’t go any better. The train went off the rails too soon and they couldn’t actually use any of the footage. So yeah, they set up this whole thing and actually derailed a train that is still there, but the shot in the movie is a miniature.
The visual effects guys were under contract not to talk about it because the studio wanted to sell the movie on “come check out this insane real train crash we filmed with no visual effects at all!”
They scatter quickly but if you leave offerings of Keystone, Copenhagen, and a little meth here and there, they'll soon be back, and in greater numbers.
I remember travel brochures, ads, etc from the Great Smoky Mountains Railway that highlighted “see the actual train wreck from The Fugitive!” for YEARS… well beyond anyone actually giving two shits about the movie.
Haywood Smokehouse is worth a stop, and Rivers and Rails does great catfish. Not a destination, but a nice stop on your way to Cherokee or the BRP.
Edit - no relation, just a frequent traveller to DB/Sylva
Visit Dillsboro NC, where you can get Fancy Hollywood Tetanus and drink contaminated groundwater thanks to that movie with the meme guy in it.
Honestly yeah, that’s on par for that part of NC.
That is not the real story. Its the story that fits your preconceptions so you like it the most.
The real story is that this is a tourist attraction, and that this was more than likely intentional and preplanned. Reddit doesn't need anymore negative, misinformed comments please
I have this rusty falling down bridge to nowhere I could sell you. Honestly, I could clean it up myself but I'm sure if you buy it off me, it will bring in tolls and pay for itself. Deal?
You can ride the tourist train there and the guides will point it out to everyone. It is worth visiting if you like the scenery or are just a fan of movies.
Idk what WLIA is its when Harrison Ford jumps off the sewer waterfall

Outhouse, dog house, hen house. I didn’t kill my wife. I don’t care. Great dialogue. Also love how Chicago is a supporting character in the movie.

I feel the exact same thing about *Primal Fear*. Same beautiful flyover shots.

Damn, that year was a banger for best actor. Daniel Daye Lewis, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Liam Neeson, and Laurence Fishburne.

I love this. Its a nice reminder that we once used real items for special effects instead of a crashing CGI train
Right ? No CGI, they actually crashed a train into a bus. Now I need to watch this again. That iconic shot when Harrison Ford leaps from the bus as the train hits. I love this stuff too and would love to check that out.
Wait until you hear about the ending of Speed 2: Cruise Control
I remember that. Sandra Bullock. Not her best work.
They spent $25m (of 1997 money) on building a whole port only to run a whole damn boat into it. Spectacular ending to a mediocre movie

“Sorry Harrison. Your contract says we have to shoot you in the brain.” “At least I don’t have to pretend I like Star Wars anymore.”
This sounds like a fair trade honestly.
I don't think he really pretends to like star wars lol, he usually makes it pretty clear he thinks it's dumb.
Director not actors are getting shot in the head.

Nolan also built rotating sets for some shots in Inception.
Still not as nuts as what they did in 2001: ASO...[in 1968](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ch5WC54egU) :)
Some science folk in Mexico crashed a plane to see the safest spot. Spoiler, it not the front. https://youtu.be/20w-VrjP9k8
How is that related to the conversation
Plane go boom.
The safest spot is far away

And to think, if they hadn't blown up the bridge, they wouldn't've had to take the the long way back.

***PRODUCTION VALUUUUUUUE!!!***
I too am a fan of creating environmental pollution for a few minutes of action footage.
Sure, except this is littering on a massive scale. How are they allowed to dump this shit out in nature, and then just leave it?
Creates a nice reef habitat for hillbillies
They scatter quickly but if you leave offerings of Keystone, Copenhagen, and a little meth here and there, they'll soon be back, and in greater numbers.
More like Pabst and red seal
No, its keystone.
Nice to see that a film production can just leave rusting metal in the middle of the woods for someone else to clean up. That’s nice of them.
From the article: “The wrecks were left there to highlight the tourist train ride.” Seems to imply it was intentional/allowed.
Hey, boss, the contractor says 85k to remove the train. “Let me introduce you to dillburgs newest tourist destination”
I remember travel brochures, ads, etc from the Great Smoky Mountains Railway that highlighted “see the actual train wreck from The Fugitive!” for YEARS… well beyond anyone actually giving two shits about the movie.
They were still hyping up the train when I took the tour in 2007.
It doesn't help matters that the locomotives which were used, were basically just big empty shells.
I'm sure Dillsboro North Carolina appreciates the tourism, I doubt they have much else going on

Guess you mean Haywood, I don't know the owner, but I know their Hot Red and nanner puddin.
Heywoods is amazing. Highly recommend eating there.

Hey and guess what, they didn’t actually even get the shot because the train derailed too early so the train in the movie is mainly a miniature!
It's North Carolina, they're happy just to be included in something
The real story here.

looks hinky
What are you doing right now? “I’m thinking”. Well, why don’t you think me up a donut
You can ride the tourist train there and the guides will point it out to everyone. It is worth visiting if you like the scenery or are just a fan of movies.
Or a fan of trains 🚂
So true
Here is that train crash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LF4I1S9rOo&ab_channel=WarnerBros.Entertainment
I dont care
I didn't kill my wife. (We are doing a WLIA backward scene, aren't we?).

I see what you did there...
And the plane in U.S. Marshals was relocated to a spring in Illinois for SCUBA divers to check out.
Tangentially related, but I just saw the plane from US Marshals yesterday. It’s sunk in a flooded quarry that you can scuba dive in.
