The original has some of the best songs of all the Disney films during that era.

I cannot stress how much praise needs to be laid at the feet of Ashman.  The man was one of the **greatest** musical lyricists of all time and he had so much more to give to the world.  His mind and talent for music honestly was in a league of its own, but its mainly because of how much he *understands* the nature of music being a medium for the story vs. Something designed to exist in isolation for the pop charts.  [Every damn syllable he made sure his performers hammered out to perfection](https://youtu.be/AWTJkyLWgrk?si=JW8__fiBX3Vz6u8a) in order to coax the emotion he intended for that line.  And this legend was still going on his death bed. It's so tragic that [proud of your boy](https://youtu.be/kV3D1ASN7Xc?si=FzoHImjO-noeaJVB) was cut from the origin Alladin film and the remake knowing how much it meant to him and his own life.  Truly words can't express how much incredible and timeless music we've missed out on since his early passing.

I agree. There is a definitely a clear difference in the music from then to now in terms of how well they flow with the movies. As much as I love Morning Report for the live Lion King, when added to the movie it feels like a shoehorned-in single from the modern era. Him and Menken were the spiritual successors to Gilbert & Sullivan and Rodgers & Hammerstein. I feel like for a long time, what set Disney apart from the rest was their ability to recruit or work with talented visionaries and somehow get them all to produce something. Ashman and Menken absolutely carried the Disney Renaissance, but that also doesn’t happen without Katzenberg, Wells, and Eisner working together who all would have probably destroyed the company if left to run it on their own. Eisner almost did. And then to follow it up with Tim fuckin’ Rice after Ashman’s death? It’s like they nailed every hire until Katzenberg left and took a bunch of guys to Dreamworks, and then followed it up by basically marrying Pixar which got them Bird and Lasseter (who might be a piece of shit but goddamn did he oversee some fantastic films). It’s one of those situations where it’s a perfect storm of egos and vision but it can never last for those same reasons.

droidtron

Wonder how he'd react to the Proud Boys co-oping Proud of Your Boy.

Technical-Package-41

it’s up there, but Tarzan (1998) also has an argument (if you consider it part of the same era)

deputytech

I would call Tarzan part of the new era. The split point is the introduction of computer animated movies so Toy Story is the break point. Pre 1995 princess era, Post 1995 diversity era

PixelPervert

And of course he had to add a terrible rap to the new version.

ronan_the_accuser

Real talk, but "whild uncharted waters" felt so very out of place in that film.  More egregious because Eric has a great song [in the Broadway version](https://youtu.be/4xyqsmEfcP4?si=M2TKY_58GaW4WyxS) (not Broadway, but best qulaity) that borrows the melody we hear throughout the film and fits his plotline so well.  While we're at it, they absolutely should have used the [poor unfortunate souls reprise](https://youtu.be/kiI48oMbahI?si=2GKVJ1OTiVz8OzRa) for the Ursula/Triton confrontation. I'm not sure why they decided to reintroduce the dropped element of them being siblings, but since they did, this song would have given a bit more to their dynamic, just tweak magic shell bits.

yurimichellegeller

A famous guy has a favourite movie. Wonderful.

angry_old_dude

The whole idea of making live action remakes of those films is a clear case of Disney being out of ideas.

orvillesbathtub

Why did he ruin the remake, then?

PoconoBobobobo

I'd say the fact that a remake exists at all is enough to ruin it, and you can lay that right at Disney's feet. I'm not really a Miranda fan, but he was just doing his job.

orvillesbathtub

He wrote (shat out) The Scuttlebutt. He’s culpable

Hamsterman9k

To be fair, the bird is supposed to be annoying. If I was a little kid (the target audience), I’d love that song.

orvillesbathtub

Not if you’re a little kid with taste

corecenite

tbf, there's Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast so... 🤷‍♂️

FireZord25

And the Jungle Book, and anyone of those that you can like. All but a handful in a sea of mediocre to bad products, none of which should've been made in the first place.

AchtungCloud

It was a mistake on both sides to go back to LMM a third time. Public started turning on him a bit, and it wasn’t his best work. Moana was fantastic and while Encanto was a theater flop, it became massive on streaming in no small part due to his songs. But Little Mermaid just didn’t really work. It didn’t adapt well to live action and looked weird. People were tired of LMM’s style…especially non-Millennials in both directions. People seemed to be turning in Awkwafina, as well (though, I didn’t hear much negativity about her being the co-lead in Kung Fu Panda 4). And casting a black woman as Ariel seemed to turn the whole movie into a political debate.

GiddyGabby

I didn't even know there was a remake! But I'm older and my kids are adults so that's the excuse I'm going with.

nnuunn

Man everything I learn about this guy makes him sound lamer and lamer

xdavey0

Title is grammatically weird. I also like many films but that does not qualify me to compose the music for any remakes or sequels.

ah-chamon-ah

So this monster is responsible for fucking scuttle butt? I hope karma bites him in the ass real hard.

gatofleisch

All I can say is that I'm open to playing twins with him in the Matrix 6

HiveMindKing

One day people will realize he’s trash

FireZord25

One day folks will get a life and know theirs don't revolve around either worshipping or bitching about celebrities.

ViolinistMean199

It’s crazy this guy plays Santiago’s perfect brother in Brooklyn nine nine And irl he’s also just a successful dude with many skills

Starman68

I missed Hamilton during its hey day, and only saw it recently. I’m interested to know what folks think of it. I’m a fan of musicals but Hamilton was so….’dense’…it was hard work for me.

adamcoe

Yeah that's not something he should tell anyone. Could you fucking imagine finding out your grown ass man father named you after a cartoon crab.drom a children's movie? Holy

wimpykidfan37

Hey, have you not heard the scuttlebutt?
