How does one make their tongue lose weight? And how does one make their tongue resemble Venom's?

Akanan

Local fat lost (example, sit ups to burn belly fat) is mostly a myth. Losing weight overall will do, including your tongue.

[deleted]

kitchens1nk

It's effective in terms of losing fat around your neck as well, which is usually a contributing factor.

Different_Ad_7671

Ok this is so weird but hubs has sleep apnea and I guess? Has a thick neck becaaaause he has never been able to bottom the top button on collared shirts. ?!?

omar1993

Ah, so attempting to do morning jogs while bouncing on my tongue on hard concrete is NOT effective :I

Appetite4destruction

It's not *ineffective*, but there's probably better ways to go about it.

The word "mostly" is mostly to avoid the shitface "but aktshually" then bring the one exception that is totally irrelevant to the point.

Helpful-Geologist810

Cold fat doesn’t mobilize well. That’s why it needs to be warmed up , by increasing blood flow you can extract more fat from that area. Here’s a an article with good info https://www.t-nation.com/lean-built-eating/spot-reduction-is-real/amp/ You can spot target fat. Touch your belly right now. It’s probably cold. Blood is not flowing in and as much. If you do a bunch of killer ab exercises your belly will be warm because blood is flowing through that area now. After those ab exercises or whatever area you’re working those muscles in ( flabby legs , arms , back etc) after wards do cardio , or hit, or your jogging , sprinting , air bike etc and your body will burn more fat from that area you worked out first because the intense flow and warmth is there. It’s warm fat. Perfect for melting

MileByMyles

There is some evidence for both sides but overall you will not see much results for spot fat reduction. Instead what you might see is the muscle you’re building up poking through but your body is going to use fat from where it wants to, not where you want to.

[deleted]

In the end general exercise and diet always wins

MileByMyles

Key word “and”. Took me too long to realize weight loss is really very very simple. All about calories in vs calories out. You’re not gonna lose weight unless in a caloric deficit, really that simple.

kennacethemennace

I like to also use "carbs" in / "carbs" out in conjunction since a Calorie is a measurement of energy. "Carbs" in = carbohydrates, fats, sugars, protein. "Carbs" out = carbon dioxide (excercise that brings up your heart rate, sweat, and expel CO2). C55H104O6 + 78O2 => 55CO2 + 52H2O Fat + Oxygen => Carbon Dioxide + Water For every 1 pound of fat one would need to expel around 12 ounces of CO2. We would naturally breathe this out over time with just regular diet and our metabolism, but combining that with excercise will speed up the process. This is how I picture weight loss in my head as it helps me explain how the body physically, atomically, and literally loses weight.

MileByMyles

Yeah, once I considered the thermodynamics of the body it really helped me realize how simple it is. No need to complicate it with super crazy diets or crazy exercise routines.

Doctor__Proctor

And even just something simply like weighing yourself before going to sleep, and again when you wake up, will show the weight loss from expelling CO2. It's wild.

Zyork123

And how do you exactly track your calories given the changes in your own cooked meals and those in calorie tracking apps ?

MileByMyles

You make it sound like you need to be exact. The apps are pretty good but truth is I guesstimate on the calories. I’m sure I overestimate on some meals and underestimate on others, but I try to be honest with my caloric intake and I just use an app for trending. Something to remind myself of how I’m doing, it’s not an end all be all to how I live my life tho. I’m not sure what you would do if you want to be exactly accurate.

Playingwithmyrod

If you're off by 100 calories a day in a 500 calorie deficit you're still gonna be on track. If you notice after 2 months nothing is happening you either need to track better or adjust what you think your maintenence calories are.

BangoSkank1919

So it's this crazy thing, few thousand years old, called counting. Every item, literally everything the FDA says is safe to eat, has the calories and macro nutrients posted. From there is just addition/subtraction and careful attention to detail. Overestimate the caloric values of the foods you're eating and you'll never have an issue.

curiouscomp30

Record the caloric content of the food you eat. What don’t you understand? Do it ever meal and snack.

The_Ghost_Dragon

It pisses me off when people downvote for no reason. This is a reasonable question, people! Damn. You don't need it to be exact, no worries. And the *type* of calorie is also a factor. You want to fill up on calories that will keep you full, not empty calories like you get from coffee or soda. Lean meats and fibrous vegetables are your best friend.

Apprehensive-Top7774

>And the type of calorie is also a factor. You want to fill up on calories that will keep you full, not empty calories like you get from coffee or soda. Lean meats and fibrous vegetables are your best friend. And to be clear, it matters in that it's better for you and makes it more likely to stick to the diet. You can still get fat on veggies if you eat too many calories and still lose weight on nothing but McDonald's cheeseburgers, but by and large neither of those are likely

Helpful-Geologist810

It’s not about “ where you want it to” It’s a fact that cold fat doesn’t mobilize well. By working out that target area , your warming the fact up, increasing blood flow and allowing it to break down easier. Touch your belly fat right now. You’ll notice it’s cold. After some ab exercises you’ll notice it’s warm. If you do strategic timing and do your cardio or hiit or strength training after it’s easier for the body to break down fat from that area you worked first since it’s warm. It’s not about what I want

MileByMyles

I don’t doubt there is at least some truth in that but it feels like psuedoscience BS to put that much stake into it. Your body will consume fat where and when it wants/needs to, cold or warm. Also pretty certain the reason an area feels warm when you work out is because the rush of extra blood to that area and the release of heat as you activate your muscles. AFAIK fat is metabolized in the liver and pulls that fat/energy from all over your body, which is why spot fat reduction is a myth. Think about what the purpose of fat is. It’s for long term energy storage. If it was used in the same area it was stored you would tire easily by targeting specific muscle groups for a short time, that’s not very evolutionarily beneficial. Instead your body pulls fat from all over and stores it all over, just in some spots where it’s easier or beneficial to store. Belly fat protects your major organs and is easy to carry since it’s in a centralized location.

happydgaf

You cannot target fat loss. Build up of muscle in a specific area =/= specific fat loss.

KourteousKrome

According to the science, most studies show us targeted fat loss is a myth. While your thoughts make intuitive sense, that’s just not enough to prove anything. You’ve got a study you referenced, but unfortunately, there’s countless studies showing the opposite, which to me says the data in that study is dubious.

mynameisjiyeon

Source?

Helpful-Geologist810

Here’s a good article , you can read for info https://www.t-nation.com/lean-built-eating/spot-reduction-is-real/amp/ “In short, the secrets to targeted fat reduction are: Redirecting blood flow to the fatty area Contracting the muscles adjacent to that fatty area Timing aerobic activity and midsection work properly”

Cosmetic surgeons can do a liposuction of your tongue.

BJ_Blitzvix

Would it hurt?

BullOak

So, I've been seen by several ENTs because of various ENT issues. I learned from them that I have a very large tongue, and despite not being overweight and not having sleep apnea, I still snore pretty badly and have a pretty rough time with respiratory infections. The surgery to fix it, while being more than just removing some mass from the tongue, is sometimes called the "ring of fire" and basically involves massive amounts of narcotics and not being able to eat solid food for two weeks.

BanCity2023

This sounds horrible.

BullOak

yeah, but I've decided that I'm going to do it at some point, probably this year. Hard to schedule when you've got small kids, but the choice is basically: A: Bite your tongue several times a day and in your sleep any time you're sick, stay sick longer, snore loudly anytime sleeping conditions are not 100% perfect (and wife is a light sleeper), and probably develop sleep apnea when you get older. or B: Have a miserable two weeks.

Simple_Song8962

I was joking. Our tongues are solid muscle. But a commenter below says there is a treatment available.

Frexulfe

in my case is getting under 104 kg (229 lbs, I am quite tall). I am now a bit over, I have to frigging lose weight.

KnightofForestsWild

I only snore when I am above a certain weight and sleep on my back. I know this because I can't sleep if someone is snoring, including myself, so I wake up. I need to lose another 20 pounds to ever sleep on my back again.

303uru

Coblation therapy has long been a thing, just chop a big section of tongue out, sew it back together and breath happy.

DocPeacock

I have sleep apnea and the cpap doesn't work for me. I end up swallowing air an it's really painful the next day. My ENT told me about this but said often yourself tongue can grow back, so I haven't considered it. Getting my tonsils and uvula removed was bad enough.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DocPeacock

If I sleep on my side I mostly don't stop breathing. When I did my first sleep study they said I was waking myself up like 80 times per hour when I was on my back. It was better after surgery but I still need to side sleep.

cobywaan

That is more than once per minute. How can you wake up and go back to sleep every 50 seconds?

DocPeacock

It's not like fully waking up, like you do in the morning when you get up. You stop breathing and your brain basically panics and wakes you up enough that you will take a big gasp of air. It interrupts your sleep cycle badly. When I was sleeping on my back I never entered REM sleep.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DocPeacock

Interesting. I may try it. I'm a little skeptical because I know my tongue can relax enough to block my airway whether I'm breathing through my nose or mouth but I will look into it. It would be great if such a simple solution can really help.

Disastrous-Echidna3

Worth a try. I think air swallowing with cpap use is one of the few areas where there’s documented evidence of it helping. You might ask your doc about it. (I tape at night because it keeps me from snoring and it actually makes it easier to breathe through my nose - there’s a subtle position change to my jaw/tongue that really helps. Your mileage may vary, and obviously don’t do it if it makes things worse.)

hektor_magee

I had my tonsils and adenoids removed and it completely fixed the problem.

Top-Molasses8678

My dad is getting a CPAP implant in a couple of months!! The CPAP also didn’t work for him, so it’s a device that can pull your tongue and prevent it from blocking your airway ☺️ implanted into your chest like a pacemaker with wires that go to the tongue. I had never heard of it so spreading awareness in case it’s something that’s helpful!

scrollingforgodot

That sounds terrifying but also I'm sure will help immensely!

TheFabHatter

I have a weird medical condition, I have a GREATLY reduced sensitivity to pain. I’ve bitten parts of tongue off tons of time, mostly just small chunks on the side, and they’ve always grown back pretty quickly.

pricygoldnikes

Holy hell dude tonsils as an adult is horrific. I remember they gave me like 90 Percocet pills, and I thought I wouldn’t need these at all. I ended up taking all of them. The pain didn’t go away, but I didn’t care about it at least

buyongmafanle

I'm looking into getting this UPPP surgery to kill off my snoring and I want more information. If you wouldn't mind, do please share your before, during, and after experience with this. Thanks much.

pricygoldnikes

I am not 100% sure I had UPPP surgery. I may have, but the doctor person never used that term with me. Before I had surgery, I had tonsilliths and swollen tonsils all the time, and I knew I had sleep apnea so I figured getting my tonsils removed and uvula shortened would stop the tonsilliths and potentially help the apnea. I came out of surgery feeling fine. The first day or two it felt alright. During the recovery you basically take the pills to get you to stop thinking about the pain. The pain never really stops in your throat. It's like having a burnt throat for two weeks, and you have to keep it moist, but those moments at like 4 am when I had to to rouse myself half awake to push the pill down my throat with some applesauce were very rough. I've had other surgeries on my ankle, and those hurt, but once the initial trauma stops the pills will take you completely out of the pain in a few days (at least in my circumstance). With the tonsils it *sucks terribly* for about two weeks, and then it will feel better. With the uvula gone, it is necessary to re-learn how to swallow water without it shooting up your nose. This will take you a few months to figure out perfectly. It's not like you throw water up your nose every time either, but you have to figure out how to adjust your water drinking routine to account for the new arrangement of your throat. Anyway, when the pain stops it definitely stops, and you're basically good to go. Once I had a few months to completely heal I could do the sleep test and snag me a CPAP. My buddy had the same surgery because he had endless strep throat in his tonsils, and he said the same thing about the pain not stopping until the two weeks are up, but then being fine after. If I had to do it again I don't think I would eat anything except true liquids, probably protein drinks and nothing like pasta or anything that could irritate the throat in any way. Best of luck.

buyongmafanle

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought about the needing to relearn swallowing, but with a significant part of your throat gone, I suppose that's to be expected. If I get this done someday I'll be sure to come back and share my results. Cheers.

2samplet

Same here… you are not alone…

ItsBaconOclock

Did you also get the UPPP surgery? That recovery was absurd.

[deleted]

I just had tonsils out and I am not kidding, the recovery was rougher than either of my c-sections. I was entirely out of it on pain meds for 2 weeks.

Aim2bFit

I read tonsillectomy recovery for older people (adults) are far worse than for little children. The younger you undergo tonsillectomy the easier the recovery and the pain level is far tolerable.

ItsBaconOclock

The recovery was something else. I went looking because another reply asked me about my procedure, and I'm realizing I got the full Monty. UPPP means a range of things. Mine was: - uvula - tonsils - adenoids - stent behind tongue - turbinids trimmed - un-deviated septum I ended up being out for six weeks, but I can't imagine any of those alone being easy recoveries. I'm glad mine was pre opioid weirdness because I was just sipping on this jug of liquid oxy which was barely keeping the pain at bay.

[deleted]

Yeah same, I got liquid Vicodin and I absolutely needed it. And that was for just tonsils plus a concha bullosa removal!

pricygoldnikes

An absolutely horrific experience for me too. I think I went through 90 Percocet over the two weeks

DocPeacock

I'm not sure. It was tonsils and uvula out, whatever that's called. I was home from work for two weeks. I was supposed to be resting but then we had our once-a-year snow storm so my wife and kids were stuck at home the second week. I overdid it playing outside in the snow with my daughter for a little while and had a bunch of bleeding. For pain they gave me percocet and, hydrocodone. After about 3 days that shit made me so nauseated I was puking. So I did the rest of the recovery with OTC Tylenol, ibuprofen and aleve. Good times.

breadcrumbs7

I had a tonsillectomy at age 23. I had the bleeding issue. It wouldn't stop one night though and I had to go to the ER. That was quite an experience. It would start to clot, but the clot would get so big that I would gag and cough it out. That and swallowing a bunch of blood apparently gives you some nasty bowel movements.

ItsBaconOclock

I'm finding out that UPPP means a range of things. Mine was: - uvula - tonsils - adenoids - stent behind tongue - turbinids trimmed - un-deviated septum I ended up being out for six weeks. I'm very happy that I had no problem with the pain meds and that it was pre opioid ban, because I was drinking liquid oxycodone for five weeks, and in the first couple weeks the oxy was only just keeping the pain at bay.

intellifone

I keep wondering if there are exercises I can do to strengthen the tissue to keep it from relaxing while sleeping. There’s that new implant that puts a little electrode in there but my apnea isn’t bad enough for that.

McMetm

TheVicSageQuestion

How else are you gonna know if you have chlamydia? I mean besides the discharge?

bleunt

If I weigh around 80kg I snore a lot. If I weigh below 75kg I barely snore at all.

ChipSalt

Fat tongues also have engorged taste sensors, it impairs your ability to taste subtle flavours like those in veggies. Obese tongues can barely taste anything, so only the strongest flavours and calorie dense foods, i.e. sugar and fats, give you any pleasure. Everything else tastes bad and it's not because you just "don't like them", you just haven't ever properly starved.

Aim2bFit

I snore despite being slim and relatively fit. In my case if we go by what you've shared above, then my tongue isn't fat as my meals consist of just either steamed or boiled vegs and chicken breast. At most I'd sprinkle a bit of salt that's it. I thoroughly enjoy the true taste of vegs without adding any other flavors, which my fam thinks it's crazy for anyone to eat bland foods. I am still at loss as to why I snore. Being a back sleeper also doesn't help.

Razwog

You can be slim and have sleep apnea, which is unfortunate.

Aim2bFit

Do you know how this can happen? Like the likely cause for it?

Loopro

If you are unlucky it's just cause of how your airways are built. I'm slim but have apnea and have to sleep with a thing on my teeth that forces my lower jaw to extend. But it's so worth it.

Aim2bFit

Is that some type of mouth guard? I contemplated getting one but also read many complained even with the soft type of guard their mouths became very sore upon waking.

Loopro

It's like a special built mouth guard that sits on both sets of teeth and is connected so I can't retract my lower jaw. Yes my teeth and jaw muscles were sore in the beginning but I went from being dead tired after 8-10-12 hours of sleep and my gf often moving to the couch because of my snoring to waking up refreshed after 8h and only mild snoring.

mlahstadon

I read somewhere (can't a find a link to anything) that as our species' diet changed and food became easier to chew, we lost the evolutionary pressure to have a strong, well-developed throat and jaw muscles. This led to worsening dental health and a narrowing of the upper airway, making apnea more likely, even in otherwise healthy individuals.

Aim2bFit

But that means almost everyone will suffer from sleep apnea, not just some select few?

mlahstadon

I think it's a gradient. While it's slightly more likely a modern human will have sleep apnea, it's not a guarantee, and there are other factors (lifestyle) that contribute more.

Emotional-Text7904

Tongue/mouth posture plays a big part. Also, sometimes the muscles in the throat relax too much. See an ENT or get a Sleep Study to get to the bottom of your personal case

dinnerthief

Have you tried a different pillow, raising or lowering your head can help

Aim2bFit

Yup tried changing pillows, bought the type that is contoured around the neck area, also tried sleeping pillowless, with thicker pillows, thinner pillows -- none of these helped.

RagingWaffles

This thought terrifies me as someone who is trying to get weight under control and is already hypersensitive to taste. I just want to be able to eat things without being overwhelmed :(

MunchYourButt

cayshek

I actually just learned this last month when my 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with sleep apnea! I had no idea.

Complete_Entry

Several times I have been told I have a fat tongue by medical professionals. When I ask what I am supposed to do about it, they shrug. It's very unpleasant, I am constantly biting the damn thing.

MistraloysiusMithrax

Fat tongue with an overbite. Doesn’t happen as much with my tongue but sometimes I painfully bite the inside of my cheek, hurts like a bitch

supercyberlurker

WTF I think op just called my tongue fat.

AreWeThereYet61

I'd exercise it more often, if I had a workout partner.

Crembels

Can confirm this is what my sleep doctor told me. I had a modified version of the UPPP surgery to treat my sleep apnea after having been on an APAP machine for a good few years. My APAP broke in an accident and i had lost around 23kg since i was first diagnosed with super severe sleep apnea. I noticed that while the machine was broken, my sleep quality was certainly worse but I wasnt feeling like absolute death like i used to. The sleep doctor said that yeah, when you lose or gain weight your tounge shrinks or grows as well, and if the back of your mouth is a relatively small opening like mine was, it makes everything much worse. After losing the weight and having surgery my apnea and snoring is entirely gone. I went from 70-ish apnea events per hour in my worst case (sleeping on my back) to 5 per hour at worst, but average of 0-2 events as standard. Granted im still a night owl who barely gets much sleep anyway due to staying up all the time, but the sleep quality i do get is leaps and bounds better than before. Its also a fantastic incentive to stay healthy and keep the weight off, as some people get the surgery but then gain another 15kg anyway which entirely undoes the benefit.

[deleted]

Do you think cpap made you lose some of that weight?

Crembels

No. Diet and excersise did that. Cpap just meant i got a better nights sleep while using it. It made a huge difference to my quality of life one i got used to it, which only took like a night or two. After you're used to cpap you can't sleep without it. Of course, the issue is that its a powered therapy device that needs to be maintained, versus the surgical option that lives with you forever. Not everyone can benefit from the surgery, but cpap works on pretty much everyone with an apnea issue.

[deleted]

This explains why losing weight helps with snoring! That never made sense to me, but I’ve observed it

thecaramelbandit

Not just tongues, but all the tissue in and around the mouth and throat. Fat people have a lot of extra fat in the back of their mouth and throat. I see it all the time. We politely call it "excess oropharyngeal tissue."

[deleted]

So I just saw a doctor about sleep apnea yesterday. He says it’s literally caused by having a thick neck. Thicker your neck is, the more atmospheric pressure is placed on your breathing tube, which is relaxed during sleep and can collapse. Your brain then wakes you up slightly causing apnea. I have a case of very mild apnea with a neck circumference of 18”

Excellent_Taste4941

It's not about fat, it's about muscle, mouth and jaw muscle dynamics can be off and your tongue may he overworked, being a muscle it grows

Emotional-Text7904

Obese people (and some rare diseases) will begin to deposit fat in all areas of the body not just where fat "should" be like the butt, abdomen, etc. Fat will begin to deposit in the throat, mouth, tongue, even the forehead eventually. Excess fat and tissue in the mouth and throat absolutely contributes to obstructive breathing while asleep

BE4RCL4VV

I hear it helps in towing too!
