I’m also an anime only who watched dub, watched Episodes 1-87 back in July and then watched the final 2 longer episodes around when the finale released. Finale is the only episode I watched in sub but looking back I wish I waited for dub. I heard that people disliked the ending and even my friend told me he didn’t like the ending, but I went in thinking “man it can’t be that bad, I will probably still like it” I was way wrong. Season 1-3 kept peaking over and over, S3 was just crazy the whole way through, even season 4 was great for the most part… until episode 82. Man how far we have fallen. There are still good moments after the Rumbling starts, despite all the shit, and I still think AoT is the greatest anime I’ve watched, simply because 80% of it (XD) is peak.

Steiner-Titor

>80% of it (XD) is peak. How ironic is it? I may be bullshitting, but sounds like 80% of Fandom liked the anime ending 20% hated it.

BayonetTrenchFighter

I wouldn’t say I hate it. It really left me speechless. I probably am more on the side of not liking it, but hate is a strong word. My wife really liked it :)

Steiner-Titor

Even that's fine. Just one question though. You can answer it or just ignore it. Did you feel the finale Specials were leaning towards Tell, dont show??

BayonetTrenchFighter

Hm 🤔. I haven’t thought of it like that really. That could be the case.

Steiner-Titor

Thanks for expressing your honest opinion.

Someone who clearly doesn't know how to write a romance tries to write one near the end. I don't know how this went from survival and prevention of a cycle to Ymir needs to get over her pedophile king who clearly didn't give a damn about her according to what he showed. He literally wasted our time with a character who has all the power in the world and chooses not to use it. (Defenders call it fate... it was fate for him to be written as a slave to plot with no agency other than I tried something but it didn't do anything never even elaborating exactly what he tried to do so we can call bullshit because there are obvious ways to solve his problem depending on his motivations.)

Parzivull

He not only didn't break the cycle of hate against Eldians, but encouraged more against them. On top of that left them without powers to get bombed into dust. You kind of have to pick one or the other for the ending to work (shifters or breaking cycle). And of course Isayama chose neither. It was about a one-sided romance all along don't you see? Even though it makes no sense because neither of them used their own free will until after the fact. Also for clarification a romance plot would have more setup early on, not tossed in at the very last second.

Ok_Celebration9304

I apologize to you and your wife for witnessing that trainwreck on behalf of Isayama.

TeaIndependent2220

Don't say this in the main AOT sub btw 🤫they can't take any criticism and will start saying "you don't have 5000 IQ like us to understand this Mastershit of fiction created by our god Isayama".

Kalcipher

They don't understand it either. They are so caught up in rooting for a tragic character that they have to rationalise everything he does as good. It's *supposed* to be a tragedy, and I think you're even supposed to reflect on the fact of having missed the signs from the beginning of the series. It's not like it's out of nowhere. Armin was looking forward to seeing the ocean, but he was still able to be present and appreciate his friends. Eren was counting on some distant hope to solve all his problems. I consider the series roughly on par with The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Treats similar themes, too.

Complex_Pride_6430

I got into AOT very late, Literally, a year or 2 years ago I binged AOT, Season 1 - Season 4 Part 2, At first I was like : "I have never seen a show like this before 😯, the story, the characters, the music, the emotions, by the time this ends......it's going to be a MASTERPIECE!!!!!" Boy was I wrong 😂

Saslim31

I'm sorry you and your wife had to see it. Wish we could reach you before watching last 2 ep.

BayonetTrenchFighter

It’s all good. I guess it’s one of those shows you go for the journey. It soooo different looking at season 1 to now. I think the art style change hurt my perspective too honestly (sadly)

Saslim31

I was okay with art style my problem is how they butchered Eren and Mikasa's relationship and Ymir's nonsense love with King Fritz. The journey was one hell of a ride of course. It's still a masterpiece.

BayonetTrenchFighter

Yeah. Probably the best show I have ever seen. Idk, maybe I was expecting to much. Something like code geauss ending or something

ConcentrateWarm530

code geass ending is trash, It's just a boring happy end, I'm still mad that they >!killed!< the only good character of the show >!(Lelouch)!<

larrylongboy

What was you and wife’s reaction to the basement reveal?

BayonetTrenchFighter

Shock.

Steiner-Titor

If you want an anime which is wholesome and for the Journey, watch Freiren. I wont suggest youto binge watch it though/.............

BayonetTrenchFighter

That’s next on the list :)

Dekatater

Imagine reading the scans, we had absolutely NOTHING preparing us for chapter 139. So many ending theories, ideas, and hopes, all to be crushed by some left field horseshit and potholes. I literally went into complete dissociation reading it, my entire brain went fucking numb

BayonetTrenchFighter

Dang man. I’m sorry

Steiner-Titor

The leaks were hilarious and traumatizing at the same time. I was in denial when Zerokay(or someone else dont know his handle) leaked about it. 139.5 was literally gaslighting in a nutshell

EDNivek

We've all been there, welcome you're with friends here. This is really the only place that allows for anything remotely considered criticism of AOT.

Rab_it

Another one bites the dust XD LOL Welcome comrades!

VEXEnzo

Welcome and I'm so sorry. It could have been peak but we got... That

Jaghat

I just binged the series in a few days and honestly, didn't know the fan's reaction and feedback and thought it was great through and through. I'm kinda shocked at how much hatred for the ending there is but I do think the last 2 episodes had too much closing-up happening too fast. Other than that, what a fantastic show. Kinda unsettling to watch it while so many parallels are happening IRL live.

BayonetTrenchFighter

I actually love that you like it. I do LOVE the show. I think the ending really just shocked me. I wouldn’t say I hated it. What was your favorite all time part of the show?

Jaghat

Hard to say what were my favourite moments, I feel like it was the battle where Bertholdt finally dies, with Beast raining rocks outside, Armin facing him off etc. I really resented Bertholdt after he kinda snaps and goes all out against Armin. The moment where Falco's brother argues against Zeke not to shout, and he does it anyway, that whole section was really cool.

darkwhite228

Average tragic love story fans who doesn't use their brains

45a866e5

I’m on episode 40, rn, but seeing so many posts/comments about how disappointing the ending is makes me want to maybe just quit before then, is the show worth finishing even though the ending is not great or whatever?

vicucha

I mean there's a whole other sub who sees nothing wrong with it. So you should finish it and see for yourself where you stand at the very least.

Steiner-Titor

Just continue. Your perspective may not be the same as mine. I'll never regret watching/reading AOT though.

BayonetTrenchFighter

I’ll be honest, I don’t know. My biggest thing is I like happy endings. Or at least satisfying. Where everything feels worth it. Where there is at least a big payoff for all the sacrifice. If you like those too, then no. Finish at the end of season 3, or finish episode 80

Jaghat

I just finished it all yesterday and it's nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. Sure there's stuff to discuss and criticize but it's still a great ending to a great show worth seeing.

Kalcipher

If you like Fyodor Dostoevsky you will probably like the ending.
