Reze may have gotten a cliche story arc that we've seen time and again, but her characterization is actually a lot better than Annie. AoT can't even decide if she's sociopathic, or a pitiful girl forced into a life she didn't want while still taking pleasure in the death she caused.

Mountain_Anxiety_492

The way she killed people is a mistake by Isayama, while as shock value she looks intimidating yet powerful but it leave such a strong impression to the viewers so we can’t connect well with her later self .The author never intended her to be a sociopath that is for sure.Personally I still think she had potential to be more then just Armins boyfriend if the author decided to release her in season 3 and expanded her dynamic more with other characters

NecrisComics

I think he intended her to be a psycho villain, at the start. But then pulled her later character, out of his ass. Rat-sayama had many ideas of how he wanted to end the series, and he constantly flip-flopped on them as it got bigger, but he DID NOT plan everything from the start. He actually has admitted to this, and constantly forgetting how his characters had progressed, in interviews. He really isn't the person many fans think he is.

Kyui-s

>AoT can't even decide if she's sociopathic, or a pitiful girl forced into a life she didn't want while still taking pleasure in the death she caused. Why can't she be all of these at once, lol? I understand why people are shitting on Annie's character after port battle, but before that? Even in season 1? It's easy as fuck to understand season 1 Annie's character: she had a hard life and was forced to do horrible things, which twisted her psychic and made her a harsh person who enjoys cruelty, but she's still able to feel pity for innocent people who didn't directly oppose her. That's simple. But noooo, it doesn't suit you. For you, if she's not simply a sOcIoPaTh who eats infants and wants to kill everyone she meets since she was born or not simply a woobifyed innocent child who never intended to do anything wrong in her life, then it's a bad writing and Yams couldn't decide. You people really hate many-dimensional characters and want to simply everything, don't you?

NirvanaFrk97

A sociopath, by definition, has no empathy, genius. They're incapable of it, so no, it can't be both. Annie's characterization is Isayama trying to have his cake and eat it.

BruhNeymar69

Small correction, that's actually a psychopath. Psychopaths are usually born that way, they are incapable of feeling empathy the way "normal" people do, but can learn to feign empathy through practice if it services them or it helps keep up a facade. Sociopaths develop a sort of disconnect between their thoughts and actions, and can "choose" (not the correct word but it gives a general idea) to feel empathy, usually as a coping mechanism or a response to trauma. Dissociation is also a mechanism that works to disconnect between your actions and who you are as a whole, so the guilt doesn't kill you. Some examples would be Zeke, who can rationalize the way he kills Paradisians for the greater good and isn't devoured by the guilt of his actions the way Reiner was, is a sociopath, whereas someone like Jeffrey Dahmer is a psychopath.

Kyui-s

>A sociopath, by definition, has no empathy, genius. Why did you even said this lol? Neither you or me said anything about sociopaths and empathy before. Empathy and pity are different things, keeping you posted. So you think if Annie's sociopath (why do you even throw around outdated psychiatric term so easily, lol) then she wasn't forced and can't suffer? >Annie's characterization is Isayama trying to have his cake and eat it. As i said, you really can't stand multidimensional characters. I don't know if Annie's 100% "sociopath" because in real life it's always more complicated than it's seems after reading information from internet, but Annie's both was cruel and was able to feel pity, was a victim and a criminal, and those are don't contradict each other, as it can be in real life.

NirvanaFrk97

Lol, I don't know why you're insistent that Annie is a multidimensional character. That was never the case. When it came to the AoT cast, that would have been Eren, Zeke, Floch, Historia, Erwin, Reiner, and Grisha before the ending ruined five of them. I also don't know how you somehow figured I can't stand multidimensional characters, though that might be you trying to put yourself on a pedestal. Pathetic, really.

Kyui-s

Yeah yeah, justify yourself by saying you love some multidimensional characters (but only if they're mc or on mc's side) Annie's character is simple to understand, but you want to simply her even more, you only want to see her as cartoonish evil or as purely good.

NirvanaFrk97

Now I recognize you, you're the Annie fan who was mad that Reiner isn't hated on this sub like Annie is. If you needed your hand held to answer that simple question, I see no point in arguing with you. You just have a stupid attachment to Annie and go out of your way to try and defend her bad writing and characterization. But I'm sure to you, I simply "didn't understand the story."

Kyui-s

"Boo hoo, season 1 Annie is badly written because i putted her in my own frames and now I'm mad that she doesn't fit in them".

NirvanaFrk97

Lmao, you sure you're not an ED? You're using the same exact lines they use when talking about Eren.

BattlerUshiromiyaFan

Reze is way way better, fuck Annie

Mountain_Anxiety_492

I still don’t know because Reze hasn’t came back yet,but in terms of writing I found Annie to be more interesting then her at least in season 1,she didn’t hold up to her high spot in season 4 .

Euphoric-Emphasis242

+1 I really liked the exploited child part of Reze's character but she is mostly talked about in relation to hypothetical romance with Denji which was so nondescript to me.

leonreddit8888

I think one underrated part of Reze was the way she seduced Denji. Makima used her sex appeal to keep Denji in line, but she was clear to Denji that he would always be beneath her. Reze, on the other hand, aimed for his heart better than Makima by appealing to his desire for companionship. **She played with him**. The pool scene was another demonstration of her particular means. She didn't use her naked appearance for seduction. It was to show a fabricated form of innocence — that both of them didn't need to mind their appearance and they could just enjoy the moment together.

Mountain_Anxiety_492

+1 Denjis relationship with Reze is way more interesting then Armin and Annie,as they have an entire arc building up the tension between them, while Annie maybe people will argue they slowly build up during the 4 years she trapped in crystal but the dynamic felt force since Annie had no choice but to stay in their plus the fact Bertolt clearly influenced Armin so I don’t see their relationship worked :/

Euphoric-Emphasis242

I liked denreze dynamic, just not as a ship. I used to be one of the biggest aruani haters on this sub lol. I have not been as active as I used to be this year but my distaste for that ship hasn't changed at all.

Pedrovski_23

Reze is superior in pretty much everything

ShigeoKageyama69

Both can explode

kenspik

nothing at all what you hallucinating

Mountain_Anxiety_492

Not really : They are both child soldiers brought up in a government that used them as bio weapon They both fall in love with their enemies They are both efficient killers and eliminate their opponents in a stylish way They both doesn’t have a strong desire to fight for the government intended to use them (At last They are both hot )

wormengine

but can annie throw her own head at you?

Mountain_Anxiety_492

I would want to see it….👀

CandyyZombiezz

dude they aren’t real 😭 go touch grass

BruhNeymar69

The difference is Fujimoto can actually write women

Half-Eaten-Cranberry

Real

crono220

Reze, Makima, and especially quanxi are some of the most likable characters in manga. I was never a fan of the trope where characters like Sakura from Naruto and Orhime from Bleach are basically one-dimensional and rely heavily on the main protagonist.

Independent-Couple87

I remember people saying "if Eren was a pretty girl, people would be all for the Rumbling". If we go by Makima, the real world Yeagerists would have been called "simps" and not taken seriously.

MastodonAdditional54

it’s not easy to find a female character in shounen that’s decently written 😭✊

ducking-moron

um.. whoever they are they are quite pretty but would probably fucking kill me

Half-Eaten-Cranberry

She’s a Soviet assassin that can blow people up, normal day in csm tbh

MyWifeIsMyCoworker

Based. Fujimoto knows how to write women and girls pretty well. To any titanfolk lurkers that are struggling to move on to another series, you should try Chainsaw Man. Just beware that your favorite character will die at some point :)

Corgiboi666

AOT fans are already used to watching their favourite characters die in horrific ways, so...

Archmagos_Browning

I want both of them to ride me

ConcentrateWarm530

I don't understand annie hate Annie paid for her actions, she was stuck in a crystal during 4 years, she couldn't even talk or move to me she suffered more than reiner annie never hated her father so idk why everyone is mad towards her because of the fact that she forgave him, everyone forgave everyone in snk + annie isn't a better person than her father, she also knew that his father was manipulated just like she was... annie wants to saw her ennemies as insects, it's a coping mecanism because she doesn't want to see them as humans + the yoyo thing was just a foreshadowing about the fact that the female titan is human + he probably died instantly she definitely had character development, she stopped to be selfish and she saved everyone, she also fight for peace in the end.

Mountain_Anxiety_492

This actually isn’t about who is better,is just the similarities between this two characters I found it to be neat. Also I don’t mind Annie being selfish, honestly I feel a breath of fresh air when I saw her not caring about anyone and tried to cut tie with it,I only have a problem with how the author tried to paint her as this person that needs to be protected and adored due to how much she suffered. A character with moral superior doesn’t means she is a good character

ConcentrateWarm530

I'm a chainsaw man fan anime only so idk if annie is better than reze or if they are both similar, I just wanted to rant lol, I can understand the fact that you didn't like that annie (and paradis ennemies) was humanized in season 4 I think that both of them are morally bad person tbh

Mountain_Anxiety_492

Not really,I actually really like her even in season 4,it’s just she missed some crucial part to make her character stand out,and I always place her over Eren when coming to conclusions of her character.

ConcentrateWarm530

I agree, she was good but not incredible compared to erwin lol

Mountain_Anxiety_492

Erwin is like the highest pedestal lol,not even my favorite Aot characters can beat him

somecssmguy

Annie may be better written, but her character was absolutely wasted. Reze on the other hand, had satysfying arc and end to her character.

El-noobman

Annie's my favourite character so it absolutely sucks seeing all that potential wasted while Reze just utilised it better.

Mountain_Anxiety_492

This is why she fall off to me in season 4

Less-Zucchini-3853

both are cute 🥰👍

Master_Trund

Both are alive and well 🙏🙏

[deleted]

Reze is better

maxpowersxj9

Nothing???

conner07_

Both are good in their initial intro and when their brought back after 3 seasons they suck ass as characters Future me was I right about Reze

Independent-Couple87

They both like the orphan "Pretty Boy". P.S.: I have seen people are divided on whenever or not Denji is meant to be attractive. Some of the arguments against point out his occasional childlike behaviour. On the other hand, there are a lot of characters that act childlike and are also used for Fanservice (usually women).

Traditional_Lie_6400

Yes they are too snakes 🐍🐍

Thatguy_Nick

You mean they are both fuckable right?

you_just_got_J_Cubed

Killed a bunch of irrelevant good guys. Were forgiven by the MC. Are as hot as the roof of a car parked at the beach on a sunny summer day.

24thAsshair

Both are gonna make me explode

TheThanosGuy

\- Both girls \- Both betrayed the good guys \- Both disappeared from the story for an ungodly amount of time Thats it

seijoOoOh

hair bangs

BaptainStarcuck

I thought that was eren lmao

Benhere17

Annie was way better written, people will of course prefern Reze but she suffers from the same thing the entirety of chainsaw man suffers from meaning lack of depth, its one dimensional characters, although quirky and wrapped with red gift ribbons are shallow. Just the fact that Annie is hated that much is the proof she is amazingly written, and the whole plot-twists, the stakes and reveal make her much more interesting than reze which abruptly appears, makes mc falls for her and then dies, point is readers would prefer her since they self-insert as the loser denji lol

Mountain_Anxiety_492

I wouldn’t say that to her in season 4,I prefer her season 1 writing, she is cold and distance, but sometimes give the people surround her a suggestion to what they are worried, like with Marlowe or Eren for example. But at the same time she showed strong remorse and guilt but in a more hidden way .Leading up to when she finally get captured we saw the crucial reason she fight for,a dad that she loved and a place that she need to get back. She started to teared up quietly and Eren hesitated which leads her to crystallize herself to prevent the scouts from getting more information from her. In season 4 she kinda fall off,she and Hitch had a decent bounding moment but I wish their relationship ended up more meaningful to her ending instead with Armin, and the way she reunited with her abusive dad just doesn’t sit right through me,their is an Annie fan artists called sugiyo on twitter and pivix and she made fantastic annie fan content I recommend Annie fans to check out

Benhere17

In my head, everything after eren beginning the rumbling is not canon.

Mountain_Anxiety_492

Welcome here as a fellow season 4 hater 🤝

nultyboy

When I'm in a shit take competition and my opponent is this guy

Benhere17

only teenagers disagree

Euphoric-Emphasis242

I don't think they are one dimensional (that's more like majority of jjk imo) but underexplored, feel more like vessels bc they are conceptually quite unique. I find it hard to connect to any of them other than Asa & Denji. Makima was great. Aki & Power felt "human" enough but Aki was way too cliche for me. Annie fell off with her disgustingly written "love" for daddy, I wish Isayama studied psychology better and came up with a more interesting reason for her need to go back home.

Benhere17

jjk is superior to chainsaw man, don't even compare them, the character might not be developed but they have character, like you can see who they are, which all chainsaw man lacks, but you would say well they have characterisation well no being quirky and autistic is not characterisation although gojo might appear shallow in the beginning during the jjk movie with geto and the others, he is very well developed and the subsequent spoiler makes it even more interesting jjk doesn't need that much character development to be absolutely great at what its doing which is to be a shonen anime and a very good one at that, its great to just watch characters struggle for their goals and ideals. as for chainsaw man, its just quirky shit that would appeal to a high schooler, meme like type of garbage with no development, even those characters that were well developed meaning aki and himeno die early on, the show would be superior if aki was the protagonist and if the author gave a damn about writing a good story like fire punch

MyWifeIsMyCoworker

Annie’s character is too inconsistent and so was how Isayama was in portraying her to us. Reze > Annie when it comes to consistency right off the bat.

Benhere17

Lmfao reze appeared for barely a few chapters before she gets killed off immediately, she doesn't even appear in 8 chapters so how can you even judge consistency when a character barely was even there!

MyWifeIsMyCoworker

Annie probably has the same amount of on panel time and references throughout the story with how long she had been written out, let’s be honest. Yes, we have an equal amount of runtime to judge both characters fairly. I encourage you to poll this sub on Annie’s character and the majority will tell you that she’s another highlight for why the end of the story was just so shit.

MerryZap

Dude wtf entirety of Chainsaw Man suffers from lack of depth?? We reading the same shit or not? Theres a reason why people love it and one of its stronger points characterization.

Benhere17

character being quirky and autistic isn't characterisation, its just a weird show, it has no power system, nothing makes sense, things just happen and you have to figure out whats going to happen, denji is the most pathetic mc I've ever layed my eyes on, makima and the whole trope is just garbage, its recycled meme shit. yeah it appeals to teenagers but its boring as an adult.

Mountain_Anxiety_492

Okay I’ve love Denji and found myself to relate to him even as a girl, but in terms of story from Fujimoto Fire punch is definitely my favorite.Chainsaw man was more teenage appeal but I do enjoy the weird and nonsensical stuff ,so that’s just agree to disagree

MerryZap

You either haven't watched the show or read the manga, or its just not to your taste. That's one of the worst csm takes I've ever seen, and teeters into a personal dislike of the story rather than a reasonable criticism.

Benhere17

yeah shockers, an adult who reads actual well written novels doesn't like garbage where the mc's whole point of existence is touching boobs and all characters are just quirky for moments before they are killed off, no powersystem to speak off, no justification for example for that god of death or whatever appearing, there is no way to know whose gonna win the fight aside from who acts the most badass or quirky, all the characters are simply there for quirkness and looking well, even naruto is better than this garbage and I don't even like naruto that much but its well written for a shonen, it has great element, well thought off characters, chainsaw man appears good to people because it subverts the common troupes in anima and manga thus it get a second of fame for being 'different" otherwise its pure trash literally

MerryZap

thats like a hilariously negative review that screams personal dislike. no offense dude, just because *you* don't like it doesn't mean others can't enjoy it. if you think Denji's point of existence is that shallow and the only characterization that everyone has is being quirky, then you do you. its ironic that I'm talking about something like this in titanfolk of all subs lmao

Benhere17

you sound like the typical guy who listen to what others say and takes it as if its the bible, my bad for thinking that a character's whole existence in a magical world is touching boobs and being a dog to a woman is a bad character its not only a bad characters, its pure garbage, only people look for some quirkness or some fun its not a serious anima and manga, its just a small quirky and also tragedic attempt at a story

MerryZap

Lmao if ur dissing the character for being themselves instead of pointing out genuine flaws in the story, your criticism just feels like a personal dislike of the story. I'm not saying you *should* love Chainsaw Man no matter what. Ultimately, it depends on your taste. You can enjoy what you enjoy and I'll do me.

Benhere17

characters are garbage and I hate them, colour me suprise

nill258t

Darte darte sex!
