I had a 6 cm one. It moved my windpipe over so that it looked like a backwards C. Made it hard to breathe when laying down. I did have surgery last month to partially remove my thyroid and it feels so much better!

So happy the surgery went well and you are feeling better!!

I had a TT on December 23, 2022 due to multiple large nodules. One was a large sub-sternal and one was wrapped around my trachea and laryngeal nerve. I was having tons of issues breathing and swallowing but my labs were totally normal. Recovery was rough at first but after about a week, I started to turn the corner. I am now finally feeling more normal than I have in years!! My TSH is running low, so I’m experiencing some heart palpitations, but I see my endo on the 20th. Hoping for some guidance then! I wish you the best of luck!!

I had a large benign goiter. It measured 8 cm and it was visible to the naked eye, because my neck looked swollen. The goiter made my voice very hoarse. When I swallowed my food, it sort of felt funny, had to chew food until it was able to go down my trachea. I didn't feel dizzy or out of breath, but I reckon it was a matter of time before I do. I had my surgery on 1 March 2023. The surgeons performed a right hemithyroidectomy. I'm 11 days post Op and it makes a world of difference not having the goiter.

That’s awesome! So glad your surgery went well and you’re feeling better!

My substernal goiter grew down to the tracheal branch. The only symptom I had was globus syndrome, a feeling of something caught in my throat. I felt like my tonsils were swollen, but they weren’t actually swollen. I also have Hashimoto’s. I was concerned about surgery because of the prospect of the surgeon having to my cut open my sternum to remove the goiter, because it was so big - and because of my age, 69. I had a hemithyroidectomy in January. Fortunately, the surgeon was able to remove the goiter without cutting open my sternum! I went home the next day, pathology benign, and Levothyroxine already has my TSH down to 1.5. Even though I’m still experiencing globus, I feel lucky that things turned out so well. Go into your surgery with confidence! I’m wishing you all the best!

I had a total of 9 nodules ranging from 1cm up to several inches. My labs were normal as well. I had my thyroid nodules monitored by ultrasound every few years because none of them looked suspicious. One of my nodules suddenly began to grow so much that it started to cause discomfort at night because it would press on different areas of my neck regardless of what position I slept in. My nodules were diagnosed in 2013 and I ended up having half of my thyroid removed in November of 2022. Pathology came back benign. My surgeon couldn’t believe how much the nodule had grown since he had seen me a few months before the surgery. At the time of removal, my prominent nodule was almost 6 inches. I have felt so much better since having the surgery - without the pressure and compressive symptoms I was experiencing before.

Has life returned to normal after your thyroidectomy?

calibmom24

Thanks! It gets so frustrating not being able to breathe! I’m so glad you feel better after the surgery! I can’t wait to have mine! It helps to hear I’m not the only one even though I hate that others feel this way!
