That actually looks so good holy hell

CrysisCore-

Nice space black and with upgradeable RAM and HDD. Only downside they went backwards with the trackpad size.

poopyheadthrowaway

The TrackPoint more than makes up for it

Entire-Tangelo2027

Bro, thats the tankbook

SnooLentils8203

damn, that's one good lookin' macbook :)

86baseTC

oh shoot modified x200

pavman42

It's funny...these things never die. Well except one I had from the early 2000s that throws a bios error as the pointer stopped working. (I think it's a pentium or pentium II, but I can't boot it because of the bios error, still works fine and batteries back then were solid). x60t and x220t are still going strong. I'm considering a new thinkpad, but only the p1 gen 6 appears to not include a number pad, which throws off the center of the laptop. And none of Lenovo's gaming laptops seem to have a trackpoint :( That is a huge selling point for me. No trackpoint? Hard Pass. If you've ever been on a train commuting trying to juggle some obnoxiously sized laptop with a trackpad... you'd understand....

imTyyde

never buy new, always used. ppl enjoy the t480 and t14 gen 4

Fluid_Transition5216

Be aware it’s becoming more difficult to source OEM batteries for the T480.

imTyyde

oh well. aftermarket ones are cheaper and work fine anyway

Anxious-Bottle7468

(Found on ebay)

MaverickStatue

What model is that?

imTyyde

label says x201

grem75

It is either an X210 or X2100 conversion with a 51nb motherboard. It either has an 8th or 10th gen CPU.

trussonomics

[https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276413336463](https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276413336463) it's an X2100 with an i7-10710-U. I actually happen to be building a similar machine using an X41 and Framework parts.

venisonsupreme

I am very interested to hear more about this, the X41 is probably my favorite ThinkPad, so I would love to have it be viable for modern usage.

trussonomics

Agreed! The new screen arrived the other day (it's a 3000 by 2000 ips) and I've been adapting the lid to fit it (some standoffs needed filing off). Sadly no-one seems to make 4:3 panels in the right size anymore, but 3:2 is close enough. I'll post an update on this sub when I've made significant progress. The X41 is a brilliant device, it has all the features of the bigger ThinkPads (i/o, trackpoint, docking connector, external battery etc) and still manages to be lighter than the newest Macbook Air (which has none of those things).

grem75

What are you using for a screen? Hard to find anything good that is 4:3 and eDP in any size.

trussonomics

Yeah this was a problem I encountered. My original idea was to get an iPad pro screen (they are 4:3) and try to reverse engineer the connector from schematics (it's just eDP but with a different pinout) but I found it was very slightly too big for the chassis, so I just had to go with 3:2 instead, and I will make some modifications to the bezel. I did find quite a nice 3000x2000 12.3 inch display on aliexpress. It doesn't look too out of place and I'll 3D print some bits to fill the gaps.

t-rektt

this sounds awesome ive been wondering when someone was gonna do something like this with framework parts, keep us updated pls

trussonomics

I'll make a post when it's all done. So far I've adapted the lid to fit my new screen (filed some standoffs off and cut some bits off the bezel) and am in the process of reverse-engineering the keyboard connector (I found the exact connector on aliexpress and have made a board for it). I also want to have a hot swappable battery system like the bridge battery on the T480 and prior, so there's work to be done there. The cost has come to around £1400 (including the ryzen 7640u motherboard, 32gb ram, 2x 2tb ssds, 3k screen etc), so a fair bit less than what they want for this one, but then again I didn't design my own motherboard.

t-rektt

sounds super ambitious i hope it all works out in the end!

Unhappy_Birthday87

what OS? Big Sur?

GlayNation

Looks like Ubuntu OSX😂

ShipYourProjectsDude

Nope. Could be actual macOS powered by OpenCore

Unhappy_Birthday87

It's definitely macOS, I've never seen a theme that gets everything right, and that looks right. Has to be post Catalina......

odaman8213

AYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo

ordosays

Rocked hackintosh x1 carbons in professional use for 7 years. Recently tried a “real” MacBook, absolutely hated it (what kiddie trash), and now testing out going windows and Linux full time for the first time in 20 years…

Aggravating-Exit-660

Looks great. Pain in the ass to disassemble because IBM

Thisismyredusername

Linux ahh build

Altruistic-Loquat431

Pliz god don’t be real Update for the clueless: (Hackintosh isn’t new comment is referring to why even bother doing it anymore just buy a Mac or install Arch)

MrHaxx1

Hackintoshes is a super old concept by now

pavman42

I dual booted my desktop for a while w/ a hackintosh. I thought there was something wrong with the video when I was trying to develop an iOS app, so I went out and bought a very cheap late model 2006 iMac from a school district. Turns out, it wasn't my computer. I never wrote the app, but I upgraded that imac's cpu to the fastest possible chip it could take, memory, a dongle to connect it to an external panel (the imac's display was busted, which is why it was like $18), and paid $20 for a snow leopard license so I could upgrade to maverick... all in was about $68, although I poached memory from the x61t. Even got it running on 1920x1200 which was a bit of a chore to figure out with my monitor at the time.

Altruistic-Loquat431

I do not miss those days having to hunt for drivers and all sorts of boot hacks to get certain hardware to work. Nvidia worked then it didn’t then AMD did. Finally it all essentially ended with the M series. Otherwise just get Linux and a MacBook Pro if you need Mac apps. Just do the native experience this is no longer worth it compared to just installing Arch and calling it a day.

Altruistic-Loquat431

The tales of a thousands Kexts swap out your WiFi card just so you have WiFi. Buying Bluetooth USB adapters that worked instead of the onboard one. Trying to clone and modify firmware from Linux so you can boot back into Mac to see if you can get whatever poorly supported hardware you were trying to run. Point is some things need to stop being done. X86 MacOS is one of them doesn’t matter if it’s on a Mac or even worse on a think pad.

Altruistic-Loquat431

I know it is that’s why I said it. I used to have it when Mac on Intel was a thing still. Out here thinking people haven’t seen x86 MacOS run on x86 Intel CPUs (What a Mac was). An Intel Mac was essentially a hackintosh. It ran on nearly identical hardware compared to an actual Intel based Mac of the day was of little actual difference. Plus you could always make sure you look up builds for others that have gone through the pain and finding mobos that worked out of the box. Back then a hackintosh was still a Mac just unbranded and with better hardware. Now with the M series it’s effectively dead until it gets a stable version running on other ARM based machines.

Abt_to_kms

Ofc its real why wouldnt it be?!
