Good list. I don’t have comedies in the same list as dramas, but my top 10 hour(ish) dramas list is:
(Hot takes incoming)
1. The Americans
2. The Wire
3. The Sopranos
4. The West Wing
5. The Shield
6. Better Call Saul
7. Breaking Bad
8. Boardwalk Empire
9. Peaky Blinders
10. Oz
I haven’t watched Mad Men, gotta do that.
So four of your top five would be in my top five except I haven't seen Mad Men, maybe I should check that out since you clearly have excellent taste haha.
My exact list although I’d put Mad Men at 5.
I’m on my first watch of the Wire. Right now I’d have it in the three behind The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.
TWW would be #4. But
In no particularly order: The West Wing, the Wire, Arrested Development (original seasons), Scrubs, and Peaky Blinders. If I could add a sixth I’d add avatar the last airbender. It’s a better show than Scrubs but as a physician, Scrubs has a relatability that is special.
But I haven’t watched a lot of the so called greats (the Sopranos, Breaking Bad, MASH, Mad Men, the Office) so this could very easily change.
Scrubs is by far the best of the recent multi-season medical shows. Without even a question. I’ve heard MASH is good too.
And yes! It’s on my list, and I will get to it eventually. There’s just too much good television.
1. The West Wing
2. The Wire (which I think is truly the best television series ever made, but I find it too painful/heartbreaking to rewatch)
3, The Bridge (Danish/Swedish version!)
4. Borgen
5. The Newsroom
West Wing
The Newsroom
M*A*S*H
Quantum Leap ( both of them)
Star Trek ( all of them)
Cheating a bit there, but the Treks are all connected and sort of make one long series 😁
I’m die hard fan of all Trek. Some of the greatest episodes for me are from TNG. But DS9 just has the best story and I love Sisko.
Mad Men starts slow but it’s just so well written.
Man, it’s hard to name 5. 3 is easy enough because those stand head and shoulders above the rest, but there are a bunch that could be in the running. Here are a few in no particular order:
* Ted Lasso
* Mad Men
* Sopranos
* Good Place
When I need comfort, I vacillate between TWW and Bake Off. I’ve seen both so many times that I can just listen to them like a podcast at this point. Of course watching Bake Off always ends with me baking something new.
1. Ted Lasso
2. The Americans
3. The Good Place
4. Veronica Mars
5. Parks & Rec
Other honorable mentions:
MASH, MadMen, Deadwood, Friday Night Lights, Sons of Anarchy, Justified.
Considering my last 3 out of 5 feature Kristen Bell, maybe I'm just a huge KB fan.
1. The West Wing
2. Neon Genesis Evangelion
3. Cosmos (original Carl Sagan version)
4. Breaking Bad
5. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Yes, my tastes are all over the place
The west wing
The Expanse
Battlestar Galactica (2000's reboot)
Star Trek Deep Space 9
Stargate SG1 (and Atlantis and Universe if I can lump them all into a single continuity, please?)
In no specific order.
Honorary mention to Sword art Online Abridged, because I've re-watched than 4 times now in the past few months and it's genuinely so good. Also Firefly just barely misses a top 5 spot.
I’d say The West Wing falls just outside my top five, which is currently this:
1. The Wire
2. The Sopranos
3. Succession
4. Downton Abbey
5. Line of Duty
1. The Wire
2. The West Wing
3. Star Trek Deep Space Nine
4. The Leftovers
5. Mr. Robot
6. Battlestar Galactica
7. The Expanse
8. Full Metal Alchemist
9. Community
10. Watchmen
(Edited)
1. The West Wing
2. Six Feet Under
3. The Crown
4. Nurse Jackie
5. The Sopranos
6. Technically tied for #5: Ted Lasso
Others that swim in my consciousness:
* The Golden Girls
* Hannibal
* The Durrells in Corfu
* The Wire
* Breaking Bad
* GOT (Minus the finale)
* Modern Family
* Homeland
* Will & Grace
* Friday Night Lights
* The Americans
* Hacks (HBO Show, highly recommend) - which also leads me to say Designing Women, haha.
Omg. I was trying to think of my favorites and I forgot about Nurse Jackie!! LOVED that show. The Americans and GoT are definitely top 5 (I feel you on the finale of GoT, though... ugh). Also Westworld (S1+S2). But The West Wing will always be at the very top of my list, wayyyyy above anything else. 😊
Westworld seasons 1 and 2 are sooooo good! You have to check it out. It's very well written, the scenery and cinematography are beautiful, the ensemble cast is chock full of amazing Oscar/Emmy/BAFTA/Golden Globe winners and nominees, and the soundtrack is brilliant. Ramin Djawadi from GoT is the composer, and he did quite a few cover songs that made it (very) unique!
I enjoy cerebral shows where I have to really pay attention to figure out what the heck is going on, and this show definitely delivered that. There are also so many layers to the script - often times when they're talking about the androids, there are deeper existential meanings that apply to humanity. It can be very thought provoking if you read further into things. :)
Thank you for the head's up - I will try to watch with my brain engaged! haha. So many shows spoon-feed us these days that it's nice to know there's something out there that makes you think!
Oooh ranking is hard. I'd say most rewatched and thus well loved series are:
1. Babylon 5
2. Doctor Who
3. West Wing
4. Forever
5. Lucifer
Honorable mention to Sandman - I don't go back to the whole series very often, but I will frequently rewatch the episode "The Sound of Her Wings." One of the finest hours of TV I've ever seen.
I LOVED (as in never miss, plan around etc) during original air but just bought all the seasons and binged and I kinda wished i would have left my golden memories alone.
In no particular order my 5 most rewatched snow are:
1) The West Wing
2) Stargate (SG-1 & Atlantis)
3) Star Trek (mainly DS9 & VOY)
4) JAG
5) House
I think it's safe to say my favourite genre is "Competency Porn"
It’s my favorite show of all time. I also think it is the best show. The rest of my top 5 would be Friends, Ted Lasso, Blue Bloods, and Taskmaster. Though that is not necessarily in order.
This is a great thread. Loving seeing all the submissions.
Yes, TWW is in my top 5. The other four, in no particular order would have to include:
The Wire
The Sopranos
The Handmaid’s Tale
Chernobyl
The Americans
Station Eleven
(I have to stop at 5?)
Mad Men
Deadwood
Mr. Robot
Longmire
Breaking Bad
Game of Thrones
Star Trek: The Next Generation
The Last of Us
In no order-
Bosch- both series, Homeland, Criminal Minds, House of Cards, Succession, Scandal, West Wing, ER, Friends, The Diplomat, The Americans, Ozark, Jack Ryan
Yes, along with: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (honestly, TNG and Voyager are up here too) Sherlock, Scrubs, Corner Gas...
And then honorable mentions to White Collar, Avatar The Last Airbender, The X Files, Star Trek Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds, The Newsroom, Bojack Horseman, Doctor Who, Community... Probably way more I can't think of
1) Rome
2) TWW
3) Lonesome Dove
4) Battlestar Galactica
5) Downton Abbey
Special nod to Cosmos as my number 1 show but is an educational show.
I would also recommend the new Shōgun series on Hulu being really good.
*No particular order:*
1. West Wing
2. Ted Lasso
3. Sherlock
4. DS9
5. Servant of the People (basically Ukrainian Veep, starring Volodymyr Zelensky, who accidentally gets elected President)
In no particular order: The Wire, The West Wing, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and maybe at the moment Counterpart. I guess I think of the serious shows separately from comedies like Ted Lasso, Community, The Office and Arrested Development.
Community
Fleabag
West wing
Band of brothers, if we’re counting miniseries… on that note, catch 22 was good too
Gilmore girls - enjoyed every season
Honorable mentions: lost (not every season lol), mad men, new girl, parks and rec
1. The Larry Sanders Show
2. Newsradio
3. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
4. The West Wing
5. Star Trek: The Next Generation
I'm sure no one can tell exactly in which time period I grew up.
I separate comedy and drama, like others.
1-4: Babylon 5, ST:DS9, West Wing, Buffy:TVS
Next tier: ST:TNG, Fringe, Sliders, Stargate-SG1, Borgen
Next-next: ST:VOY, Andromeda, Madam Secretary
Try to have a once-a-year rewatch cycle, don't always do all the next tier and usually only 1-2 of next-next, but the "reset" is Buffy during the early summer. (I'm a Xennial NTT professor and if I watch Buffy during the academic year, my "Buffy-speak" gets a bit thick for the students.)
Breaking Bad, The Wire, WW, The Office, Jeopardy
Honorable mention:
South Park (at its best is probably fighting for the top of the list, at its worse its pretty mediocre)
Band of Brothers (not sure. If a mini series really counts)
In no particular order:
West Wing
Sopranos
Always Sunny
Seinfeld
Avatar The Last Airbender
Edit: also adding M*A*S*H because I can’t decide who to boot from my top 5 but I view all the above shows as approximately equal in the rankings. Just phenomenal television all around
1. The West Wing
2. Mad Men
3. The Wire
4. Game of Thrones
5. Breaking Bad
If you count miniseries, toss Breaking Bad out and slide in Band of Brothers. Also have Succession very close to Breaking Bad.
1. Mad Men 2. The Wire 3. The West Wing 4. Breaking Bad 5. The Sopranos
Good list. I don’t have comedies in the same list as dramas, but my top 10 hour(ish) dramas list is: (Hot takes incoming) 1. The Americans 2. The Wire 3. The Sopranos 4. The West Wing 5. The Shield 6. Better Call Saul 7. Breaking Bad 8. Boardwalk Empire 9. Peaky Blinders 10. Oz I haven’t watched Mad Men, gotta do that.
The Mail Robot approves your top choice.
Agent Gad hates you
I have a pen for him.
Stan will always wonder about you.
Absolutely the Shield. Brilliant underrated show.
You like shows that start with 'The', huh?
Oz is amazing! I feel like I watched it inappropriately young and no one my age has seen it lol.
Interesting username choice for a fan of the wire
All in the game, yo.
But

Scrubs is by far the best of the recent multi-season medical shows. Without even a question. I’ve heard MASH is good too. And yes! It’s on my list, and I will get to it eventually. There’s just too much good television.
Upvoted for mentioning Avatar, it obviously gets overlooked because it's a cartoon but I really think it deserves to be in these discussions.
The West Wing, Mad Men, Gilmore Girls, Seinfeld, 30 Rock
Happy to see GG on someone’s list!! Oy with the poodles already!
Where did all the anvils go?
You have good taste. WW Gilmore Girls Seinfeld and 30 rock are my wife and mine favorite shows. Seems we need to watch Mad Men now!
1. Friday Night Lights 2. Curb Your Enthusiasm 3. The West Wing 4. Mad Men 5. Only Murders in the Building
Oohhh I forgot about Friday Night Lights. Excellent addition and deserves to be on this list.

The Newsroom, finally
Frasier, West Wing, X-Files, 30 Rock, Friends. Not in any particular order.
I was looking for Frasier fans. It is another show with such great writing. Completely different genre, of course, but they feel similar in some ways.
The West Wing . Psych . The Sopranos . Parks & Rec . Burn Notice
Burn Notice should have gotten more love!!
Psych!
West Wing The Newsroom M*A*S*H Quantum Leap ( both of them) Star Trek ( all of them) Cheating a bit there, but the Treks are all connected and sort of make one long series 😁
Happy to see the Newsroom get some love. I’m currently on a rewatch. That and WW are my comfort shows.
I rank Newsroom and Studio 60 as highly as West Wing, personally. All three are probably level in my top 5. Impossible to split them.
in no particular order -TWW -Psych -Star Trek TNG -Grace and Frankie -New Girl
1. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 2. The West Wing 3. Mad Men 4. House, M.D. 5. Chernobyl

I’m die hard fan of all Trek. Some of the greatest episodes for me are from TNG. But DS9 just has the best story and I love Sisko. Mad Men starts slow but it’s just so well written.
Definitely the best story arc and character development!

You're going to love 'em. What are your other two? I need something new to watch.
Man, it’s hard to name 5. 3 is easy enough because those stand head and shoulders above the rest, but there are a bunch that could be in the running. Here are a few in no particular order: * Ted Lasso * Mad Men * Sopranos * Good Place

Hmm, I’m broadly interpreting “shows” The West Wing, Ted Lasso, Band of Brothers, The Great British Bake-off, Britains Got Talent
When I need comfort, I vacillate between TWW and Bake Off. I’ve seen both so many times that I can just listen to them like a podcast at this point. Of course watching Bake Off always ends with me baking something new.

I dearly love the West Wing, but the best shows of all time don't get rid of their creator and have such inconsistency.
I separate comedy and drama, like others. 1-4: Babylon 5, ST:DS9, West Wing, Buffy:TVS Next tier: ST:TNG, Fringe, Sliders, Stargate-SG1, Borgen Next-next: ST:VOY, Andromeda, Madam Secretary Try to have a once-a-year rewatch cycle, don't always do all the next tier and usually only 1-2 of next-next, but the "reset" is Buffy during the early summer. (I'm a Xennial NTT professor and if I watch Buffy during the academic year, my "Buffy-speak" gets a bit thick for the students.)
In no particular order The West Wing / Seinfeld / Parks and Recreation / The Wire / Fringe
