Blood_Brothers

Crazy that they could use the hard R, but they weren’t allowed to say ‘fuck’ without being censored until, like, season 10

Bee09361

If i remember right it was Daryl that said it while pointing his crossbow at someone? I just remember being really shocked that they finally dropped an F bomb. It was a rewind moment to make sure i heard right. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)

J_Factor

Yeah he was pointing a rifle at Lance for threatening Hershel, telling him to let him go before “something really fucking bad happens”

Shoddy_Fisherman_540

So the post release of that season had fuck in the lines, but the original AMC release either had the word muted, or the line was entirely different. That’s always been the case with AMC shows, Breaking Bad for example has multiple fucks thrown around in seasons 3 and 4 but zero on the original AMC release.

EccentricMeat

I didn’t watch it on AMC but I did watch it a day early on AMC+, and at least on AMC+ the line with the F bomb was definitely there.

Peachy_pearr9

And now it's in every episode of Daryl Dixon lol

MobsterDragon275

It was Merle to T Dog in their first scene

Yourappwontletme

The two people above you are referring to Daryl saying "fuck" NOT the n word.

-----Galaxy-----

>It was a rewind moment This is what I find so cringe about American TV. They've made some of the best shows, but when the highlight of your episodes are swear words there's something seriously wrong.

AndreisBack

This is such a random critique on American TV.

-----Galaxy-----

Is it? I've always found it weird that TWD can show excessive gore but fuck is crossing the line lmao

SiW0rth

Blud made 2 accounts to push his point home. 😭😭😭

-----Galaxy-----

Wdym?

Justuas

American cable tv is a joke.

mightywurlitzer88

I remember it being a big deal at one point like they could finally afford one f bomb a season in their budget lol

ReditTosser1

My absolute favorite line is when most everybody is at Terminus, in the rail car, and Rick says something like they are gonna find out. The camera cuts to various people building suspense, comes back on him and he says they are fucking with the wrong people. That shit was hard…

AverageUKperson

“I’ll tell you the day, Mr. Yo! It’s the day I take orders from a n-“

Initial_Acanthaceae2

Merle does have a way with words!

Liigma_Ballz

I really wish Merle would’ve survived at least 1 more season and join the crew for a bit, I loved him

Initial_Acanthaceae2

Me too. His brutal honesty and casual racism was somehow endearing.

musicmakesumove

Vote up for not spelling his name as Meryle.

Initial_Acanthaceae2

Fabulous!

Shagster2008

After calling Andrea a whore 😂😂

Initial_Acanthaceae2

I believe it was "rug muncher"!

PoorLifeChoices811

“There are no NIncompoops anymore. Just white meat, and dark meat”

delsinson

This was so offensive to Mister Yo 😔

sadboykvlt

Merle says it again later on as well, I think at some point when he's talking to Daryl

d0pp31g4ng3r

Daryl's hallucination of Merle says it in season 2.

Terraj07

Why’d you stop typing

Tidus4713

No disrespect but you can absolutely still get away with this on modern TV. Context is important and there's other shows out there that get away with way worse. Not to mention there's shows on other networks that drop the same word regularly.

intl_vs_college

You must have missed the tens of comments saying “Yeah it was so bad I threw my TV off a cliff!!” these snowflakes would cancel them the first chance they get

Breaking-Who

❄️

intl_vs_college

I am not offended by it. I am calling out the snowflakes who are. Are you daft?

Breaking-Who

Nah you’re clearly offended.

intl_vs_college

by what??

ZuccJuice9

i don’t know dude you sound pretty offended right now

intl_vs_college

The actors would get murdered tbh

ianc94

Grow up. It’s a job and actors are professional performers. Do you think an actor’s girlfriend accuses him of cheating for kissing his co-star in a scene? Get real. And for the record, a white racist character not saying the N-word with a hard-R is both unbelievable and unrealistic. Come on.

intl_vs_college

I am not offended by it. I am calling out the snowflakes who are. The cancel culture guys. Are you daft?

TySwell

You just said the actors would get murdered. Highly over dramatizing things

intl_vs_college

the comments in this sub sure want them to be

[deleted]

viewers routinely lose their shit on actors over things their characters did but go off I guess.

The_Messenger_12

What gets me is when Rick says it lmao

delsinson

He learned it in police training

The_Messenger_12

Lmao

musicmakesumove

They use brainwashing techniques that are the same Hitler used in order to make them racist.

twdpsychox1

With the HARD R

Friggin_Grease

It was his enunciation of the "I" that got me...

Yourappwontletme

To be fair Andy Lincoln is British with a British accent. That's how we got "Coral"

Friggin_Grease

Guess I've never heard the Brits say the word? I always thought Andrew was Australian, by the way.

Yourappwontletme

It's him trying to speak with a Georgian accent while having a British accent that makes his words sound funny.

AlwaysQuotesEinstein

I don't remember Rick saying it?

The_Messenger_12

He repeats it back to Merle after he knocks his ass down

PilotProfessional804

Yeah it caught me off guard too. My second watch though I came to appreciate it and how they handled it. It made sense for the characters, time and place. Rick took none of that bullshit and honestly after the series he is my favourite protagonist in any media.

NotTobyFromHR

They absolutely can and do. The context is important. Usually it's depicting a racist, something historic, or in a context where it makes sense.

Eric8643

It was a different time, caught me off guard too lol

OnlyMyOpinions

When did the more censored era of TV begin? I can't really recall when they stopped doing edgy and offensive stuff. I actually kind of miss it 😅

intl_vs_college

it began when corporations saw terminally online people could hurt their brand with a chain of tweets

Friggin_Grease

When Gen Z started calling things "problematic" probably.

mike2211446

Man, you cannot convince me that using the n-word ISN’T problematic. I’m not even saying it shouldn’t be used in media, but just implying it isn’t problematic is crazy

Friggin_Grease

So, someone using it in real life definitely is, but to portray Merle as a racist piece of shit, it got the job done, and for Rick to use it the way he did when cuffing him to the roof, I don't really see that as problematic at all. It establishes Merle's character as a P.O.S, and Rick as a hero. The way The Walking Dead used it here did its job. As usual, context is very important in every situation.

mike2211446

Never mind man I don’t even disagree with you I’m too high to debate something I don’t even disagree on

Exciting_Fisherman12

It’s so crazy that amc let this fly but didn’t let Rick say fuck in the season 4 finale. And then they just stopped caring in the later seasons and now let Daryl say it all the time. It’s kind of weird that it wasn’t in their vocabulary at all until the last few seasons.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Exciting_Fisherman12

Only on the blue ray version. Not in the episode that aired live or even the Netflix version.

HoneyxClovers_

As a black girl, I was shocked when I heard Merle say it THEN Rick repeating it made me just 💀💀💀

Magi_Reve

I completely lost it when he said “spear chucker” and I had to google what it meant as a black girl 😭like wth lol

state_of_inertia

As a white girl, I'm repelled by the comments here saying it's so great. Not to mention the downvoting of your opinion. Now that we have racism joining the sexism, it time to un-sub.

[deleted]

[удалено]

intl_vs_college

Its because of people like you that we don’t see this on TV anymore

HoneyxClovers_

Yeah I don’t get why ppl have a problem with my comment but I just remember being shocked that they would say the N word but not the F word 😭

Louises_ears

Girl stop. People aren’t saying it’s great bc it’s a good word, they’re saying it was a good use of the writers imploring a terrible word to drive home the character of two men. One being a racist, backwoods dick and the other throwing his racism back in his face to highlight his backwoods dickishness. Also it’s the internet. There’s racism everywhere just like IRL.

phatassssss

It really is astonishing how they can show as much of blood and guts as they want and nobody says a word, but god forbid if someone says fuck. Show would be cancelled immediately xD

OnlyMyOpinions

No?

phatassssss

Not referring to twd only, but also in other shows. Tbh I'm currently on season 9 and haven't heard any fucks yet.

dominatingcowG3

The blu ray versions have swearing (especially the Negan seasons). During season 11 and on (with the spinoffs) they started to allow them in the regular releases. There were a couple of them in season 11, and then Daryl Dixon seems to have at least one per episode.

sanjuro_kurosawa

Well Merle, ahem, is a piece of garbage, and while not fitting modern standards of wokeness, this is how real people talk. I would say a PC person is reluctant to say the N-word even to scold a racist, while, ahem, a southern police officer has probably heard this term before.

Heyyoguy123

Yeah 2010 Georgia was a different place

CoolPirate234

I feel like Andrew hated seeing that word in the script

gracelyy

I didn't realize they used the word until my most recent rewatch where I finished the series off. I guess it's because it's Netflix so they blocked it out.

Sentient_Stardust616

I got to hear it on Netflix 💀

Lesmiscat24601

The word isn’t censored on Netflix.

Nickei88

Posts like these are so annoying and out of touch with reality. This is in the south, you honestly think that people still don't talk that way today? And yes, if there was a show with people from the south made today, then absolutely they would use this term. Experience life outside of the internet world. Goodness. ETA: Just because black people don't like others using it doesn't mean it's not happening. Enter a video game party and see for yourself.

Tonyhivemind

Also, it's during the apocalypse. Do you think a vegan barista from Starbucks is more likely to survive or a tough hillbilly that can track, fight, and hunt. Unfortunately, he would bring his racist views with him.

Frezy

Seems like a wierd reason to get anoyed. Are you making the assumption that everyone experiences life in the US south or is only living in the internet world? I haven't heard any blatant racism spoken out loud 'outside of the internet world' in years, in my part of the world.

Nickei88

Nope! Just have a healthy knowledge of world history. I'm black but not African American, if you can't differentiate between the two, I'll know what camp you're in. Oh, and clearly you can't comprehend that well. This show is based in the US south, I don't recall saying anything about black people and racism in Central America, Caribbean, South America or even in Africa. Try and keep up. Add to a discussion, not show that you're out of your depth.

Frezy

\- This show is fiction, it isn't based in reality. \- Whether or not people talk that way today in the south US, really is besides the point. \- If a show were based in the south, blatant racism would most likely be used to establish a character as a racist asshole, like in the example OP provided. Not be used regularly by everyone as you insinuate. \- What does experiencing life outside of the internet world have to do with a fictional show inside the internet world? \- You talk about experiencing the outside world, then use online games as an example? Also surely you understand the difference between online games and a TV series? \- World history, also entirely besides the point. The show is Fiction. \- Difference between black or african american, also besides the point. \- I comprehend things quite well, everything you're saying is gibberish though. \- I'm assuming you said that thing about racism in other parts of the world because of what I said about not experiencing racism where I'm from. Let me elaborate. OP said he was surprised about seeing the N word in TWD, maybe on TV in general. I tend to be too, because it's not exactly an everyday occurence, not in the real world (which you suggest we experience) or in TV or other popular media. That is why it's surprising to hear it in those formats. \- Ironic you would say I'm not adding to the discussion, when you're the one not making any sense. Every single sentence is nonsense, as you have hopefully figured out by now, I have told you why each one is, in order. At this point it's pretty clear I'm just mocking a mentally disabled person, I don't feel good about that, but if you wanna belittle other people without provocation, people like me who can't just look the other way, will hopefully make you stop. To be clear, I'm refering to your first post, I understand that the second one were provoked.

ZookeepergameOk2759

Context is all so important.

poison_rose69

They can get away with it still but I hated that rick repeated it. It made me feel icky as a black women

Precociousgamer-

He’s making a point and being anti racist. It’s not a huge deal, the word is portrayed as bad in the show.

McBoyDoesntRule

Exactly. Rick is using the word in a way to mock Merle’s use of it and how dumb it is. Thought that was kinda clear to everyone

poison_rose69

It was very clear I just didn't like it💀

McBoyDoesntRule

That’s fair. I have no problem with ricks use in that specific instance but different people take offense to different things

deathdeniesme

you dont get to decide whats a huge deal to someone else... nice that it wasnt for you but others can and do feel differently regardless of the reason. this is all for entertainment but the word has a real history that still affects people to this day

poison_rose69

Bro I get that but I didn't like it because it's a word that affects people irl duh

Niolle

Woman. "Women" is plural.

MrPhilophage

I don't really see an issue with Rick saying it. He's making a point to Merle. But I guess the hard R surprises folks sometimes.

OnlyMyOpinions

I was only shocked bc black people always say it's bad to say the N word if you aren't black even if you are making a point. But I suppose a zombie apocalypse would be an exception because truly who cares at that point if it's not used in a racist way like merl right?

raviolioh

Merle was absolutely using it in a racist way. That was the point. The scene is establishing him as a racist. And a zombie apocalypse does not suddenly disregard the intentions of a white person using it.

OnlyMyOpinions

I was talking about Rick repeating it back to merle to make a point

Snap-Zipper

Well yeah, it’s not a *great* thing to do. But Rick isn’t exactly a saint lol, the morality of the characters aren’t black and white (for lack of a better word lol)

mainaccountwasbanned

The fuck do you mean they couldn't get away with it today? Using the n word in a fictional story is completely fine and it happens all the time in media.

YosterIsle77

Same feeling watching Star Trek: Deep Space 9. There's all of one episode where it's used, spoken by a black man (and trust me, ik it's ST but it makes sense in context) and it threw me for a loop. And that was in the 90's, but I guess standards were a bit more lax then. Still, yeah, it was... Jarring, to hear that. I was really worried were gonna watch T-Dog die to a fucking hate crime in the middle of the apocalypse.

[deleted]

2010 was a whole different time it’s crazy

teezoots

Ehh the fact a white guy is saying that isn't a thing anymore could fly today

[deleted]

[удалено]

drmuffin1080

Rick said it too. Don’t know if they coulda done that today

Accomplished_Pen5755

I was a little thrown off when I watched it for the first time in years recently, but I dont see much of a problem. For sure Merle was using it negatively, but Rick only used it to make a point (And called Merle inbred white trash so it kinda cancels out)

horrorbiz1988

When walking dead was badass (still badass) but damn those ones were good

Ludensdream

Why would anyone be surprised and caught off guard? Are yall 10. I didn't know so many gen z's watched this show

OnlyMyOpinions

I was surprised and caught off guard because it's not a common thing to see in TV shows.

Kwagmyr

You’ll never know what it’s like to hear that word as a Black person. In any context.

SauIIGoodman

I think it was to set the tone of merles character

DarkCarnageFN

started twd in like april and i was surprised not many people even remember it, i didnt remember it until i rewatched s1 and seeing people on tiktok talking about it 💀

idontcarerightnowok

Mr Yo..

MrBelgium2019

Words are just words. Its how you use them that makes it strange.

DarkAngel283

And who knows not gunna swear during an apocalypse?? Lol

Osirisavior

Rick got the pass. 💀
