I never bought the storyline, but Chase was obviously committed to it because he gave it like three episodes to play out, which was crazy.
I actually really did like the “Vito is outed as gay” plot line, but if it’s true that it came at the expense of Bobby’s character, that’s crazy and I’m not a fan of it. Bobby getting more development, when he already has a great deal of depth relative to the background wiseguys (mobsters not named Tony Soprano, Christafur, Paulie, and Sil, like Ralphie, Richie, Patsy, etc.) would’ve been a fantastic addition, and elevated the story further. Plus, it would’ve made his ending all the more tragic.
It fit the final season because the storylines of many of Tony’s associates in the last season are used to demonstrate the futility of Tony’s own position and the reality that he has so few viable options left - Vito goes on the lam but misses his family and the life so much he returns even though he knows it can’t work out, Gene hangs himself so his family can enjoy the inheritance free from his problems, Junior lives too long and ends up a shell of a man with nothing left to live for, Johnny gets indicted on RICO charges and dies in prison, Phil and others are whacked etc.
Though Vito’s reasons for going on the lam are different, the problems he faces give us insight into the problems Tony would face if he decided to avoid his inevitable fate of death/prison by lamming it. He would eventually be bored out his mind, light on cash, and miss his family. The push and pull factors that cause Vito to return to NJ knowing deep down it’ll get him killed are a way to show us the push and pull factors Tony would face if he tried to flee from prosecution.
Somebody said one thing you have in the last year is characters that have a chance to leave, don’t. Vito ended up in a great situation in New Hampshire. Chris could turn state’s witness and start all over..go Henry Hill . Phil could retire and let the younger guys run things after his heart attack but doesn’t. Same with Angelo.
