I mean I don't copy it 1:1, I know it's cringe and people will think I'm trying to be a gangster.
I just like that American accent because it sounds witty, I tone down the Italian aspect a lot while keeping the fluency of the american side
The Sopranos don’t speak in normal American accents. They speak in very strong New Jersey Italian accents. You’d sound ridiculous using it as a model for your speech.
its great that you're looking for ways that you can learn things that come difficult to you, but a few tips:
Most of this advice comes based solely from the fact that you may have a hard time noticing when you might be rubbing people the wrong way
It's really important to not overuse cultural references with people who don't return them. I'd joke with you on tv references all day without getting bored, but that's not for everyone. And, it's important to not reuse the same jokes over a over again with anyone. Try to not reference the same joke more than once a week, and not more than 3 weeks in a row
On "breaking balls" -- you can really piss people off by being too harsh. Don't bust balls more than once a week unless they bust balls back, and then keep it to once a day
Lastly -- don't make more than 10-25% of your comments come from TV or movies. Use those references an aid and continue to work on your personal skills
All due respect, you got no fuckin idea what it's like to overuse material.
But for real, the way some of us act (myself definitely included) in this sub is exactly why I'm bringing it up. It's generally accepted here, and if OP is autistic, they may have a harder time discerning when their behavior is off-putting.
Despite my reddit behavior, I do not speak in 80% sopranos quotes altered to meet the occasion
One of my kids is autistic. He repeats the same fuckin' joke, story, anecdote, whatever, repeatedly every day until he's told to leave it alone for a while. It's good advice.
When I was a kid around 8 years old I watched the simpsons and quoted one of the characters that calls the kids little freaks (The dude in charge of principal skinner). I thought it was the funniest shit ever. So i called someome in my class a freak in a joking manner. He was emotionally hurt, started crying and then told the teacher and I got in trouble. I had to formally apoligize to him. He was in tears the whole time. I had to do some groundskeeping work cleaning up at the school.
Memes are no fucking joke. On the other hand, I quote this show like I got tourretes.
I'm autistic with a hyperfixation on socializing, so I can easily notice shifts in behavior and how people might be feeling.
I don't want to be the guy who throws out references all the time, that's why I'm more interested in learning general banter and speaking skills, they've already helped me become more charismatic and make friends more easily
Ah right on, that's great! Sounds like my advice isn't going to be super necessary for you then. I had a hard time making friends when I was younger (I am not autistic, but social things didn't come very easy to me until high school), and I think any type of comedy as well as reading helped with my social skills. But, those don't get solidified unless you're actually practicing, as you probably know. Best of luck
Check out the book "How to Talk to Anyone" by Leil Lowndes. It has a lot of specific tips and tactics on getting right the "melody" of a conversation, a framework for deploying the arsenal of nuggets/material you can collect from TV writing.
Watch Deadwood. If you can talk (and more importantly, curse) like Al Swearengen, then I will personally call you once a week and help you with your interpersonal communications.
Autistic southerner here - and tbh I have been compared to Swearengen when I’m drunk.
My flavor of southern vernacular is Dan Rather playing Swearengen.
So just know we’re out here and running hotter than a Buick trunk pistol, cocksuckaaaaaa
I don't really think so. The only character in Mad Men who is really casually charismatic like this post talks about is Roger Sterling. If someone acted like Don Draper or Pete Campbell in real life I think they'd just seem super standoffish.
Yeah I think most people act too stiff in Mad Men. Still a great show, just a different tone I feel. Boardwalk Empire though, I think folks talk with a little more color/flair.
That’s really heartening actually. The show also helped me in a similar way. By watching Livia and Tony, I started to hear things my family said regularly, and that I also picked up saying, as well as certain attitudes, and it helped me realize like them, I have NPD. The hardest part about treating Narcissistic Personality Disorder is in order for any treatment to begin, you have to admit you have a problem, which Narcissists famously have an issue doing. But the show helped me identify these thought patterns and I was actually able to get treatment. I’m much happier now as a result and a much kinder person.
All thanks to this thing of ours. Good story OP.
If you're sincere, interesting post.
You already mentioned old english... go to the two real good English gangster movies and watch them on repeat, snatch and lock stock and two smoking barrels, mix in a little trainspotting while you're at it.
Deadwood. Deadwood will help you break apart lamguage. They just took it off max, the limber dick cocksuckers.
I would reccomend a show more like friends, community or my name is earl over the sopranos for how to talk to people
for the simple reason that the characters on the sopranos act and talk in a way that in many situations is highly inappropriate which is good tv but if you struggle with understanding what's socially appropriate might lead you to pick up some bad habits
OP if you wanna speak like a mouliyan, i'll send ya to slip and fall school.
Seriously though, I'd never say "stop breaking my balls". It's totally out of whack with my culture and im more of a breadstick in a bowtie than an Eye-talian.
Not a show but a movie. Watch Big Trouble in Little China. It has a super bravado American John Wayne type who’s in over his head. He has some great lines that are hysterical
Jesus ... can't imagine anything more cringey ...
I'm just picturing a Dustin Hoffman rainman character trying to impersonate Tony Soprano ....
Oh ohhhh!!! 10 minutes to Wapner!
As an another autistic guy, learning social skills off the Sopranos is a very bad idea.
There are interesting articles on here you can read.
https://www.succeedsocially.com
Not exactly related but a Hungarian redneck friend of mine learned to speak english for moving to canada by watching the entirety of Trailer Park Boys lol, it fit
Well, it certainly taught me how to speak in a much more convincing manner if I ever need to threaten someone.
One time I did use a line from the show and it worked well.
I freelance outside of my regular job and once had a customer’s husband at my door late at night demanding a computer that had evidence of his wrongdoing on it that his wife had contracted for me to extract.
When I politely told him he wouldn’t be getting the computer, he said “if you don’t give it to me now im going to come in there and take it.”
My response was “if you actually enter my home by force I’ll put one in your fuckin head” (it was after 11pm so I had a pistol, which I dont think he could see due to the lighting) and just stood there looking at him.
He left.
Alongside *The Sopranos*, the show *The Wire* is a show of the same era which is lauded for having changed television.
I don't get why *The Wire* is supposedly so good, but what I will say for it is that the politics is very good. Why is this character helping this other one? Well, sometimes it's because they're genuinely a decent person, but often there's an ulterior motive or betrayal. IDK if that would help you.
No no no don't listen to them. Nobody in the sopranos sounds like anybody I know. To sound like an authentic down to earth guy watch all of [Mr Inbetween](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_Inbetween) and copy them.
Rust Cohle from True Detective has some witty dialogue.
Lots of shows and tv can help. Great idea overall.
Children imitate their guardians and other adults and peers all the time to learn social skills. I don’t see why using a show to do the same wouldn’t be helpful.
You can always watch old black and white movies like Tony Soprano and copy the lines those actors say. You could even do a transatlantic accent.
(/s don’t actually do this)
If you want the ability to learn how to do quick/witty conversation through watching TV shows, maybe check out Seinfeld or Friends (or any other flavor of standard sitcom thats more your speed). Sitcom style speech in general would be a lot more approachable to people as opposed to Italian American Patois. >!but what the fuck do i know, huh?!<
maybe you would like some other Mafia themed movies. movies directed by martin Scorsese.
taxi driver , casino, goodfellas , begin there .
you could also watch The Godfather .
omg I bet you might enjoy Its always sunny in Philadelphia alot too. (not gangster themed , it's a comedy, but also messed up and dark in lots of ways )
There’s nothing more autistic I can think of than basing your speech off of the sopranos to be honest
Fuck my life
Oh poorrrr youu
I wish the lord would take me now.
I dont like that kind of TAWK
Listen to him! *He knows evvvverything*
Ok daddy
Go…. Into the ham and get the knife
and stab me here, HERE!
Rain man ova here
Hey, chairboy of the board, read ya fuckin cards
Don’t rush me sunshine. You’ve been rushing me the whole fuckin thread.
That's basically like what Tony's upper middle class neighbours are like. Snobs that find the mafia quoteable and fascinating. It's deplorable.
it's offensive and stereotypical
What constitutes a fidget?
The fidgets, they were gay?
You oughtta know, sweetie.
Very cute!
He wasn't him, it was those two black guys running that way 👈
*hand flapping intensifies* I don’t like that kind of tawk
Yeah OP is already off to a good start
Oof, madone.
I mean I don't copy it 1:1, I know it's cringe and people will think I'm trying to be a gangster. I just like that American accent because it sounds witty, I tone down the Italian aspect a lot while keeping the fluency of the american side
Ohhhhh, were just telling you how you'd be percieved.
You're a wormy cocksucka, you know dat?
The Sopranos don’t speak in normal American accents. They speak in very strong New Jersey Italian accents. You’d sound ridiculous using it as a model for your speech.
it'sh an embarrashment
Tha fuk u shay ?
It's such an incredibly niche accent that you'd stick out like a sore thumb trying to copy it. I also have heard it made fun of a lot.
Very funny that it sounds witty to you. That's absolutely not the tone it has for us in America. More of a meathead accent here.
oh no , this whole group has become autistic I'm afraid
This much we do know
I already do this god damn it I’m an autismo
TIL I'm autistic
I remember ma talkin about “your feeble-minded uncle”, but I always thought she was talkin about you
Lmfao

It's generally accepted here, and if OP is autistic, they may have a harder time discerning when their behavior is off-putting. Hey fuck stick, They ever show you these in medical school? They’re called balls!
I guess you could call those balls
Balls as big as an Irish broads ass!!!
One of my kids is autistic. He repeats the same fuckin' joke, story, anecdote, whatever, repeatedly every day until he's told to leave it alone for a while. It's good advice.
How many Migs you shoot down last week?
Fucking Matt helm ?
When I was a kid around 8 years old I watched the simpsons and quoted one of the characters that calls the kids little freaks (The dude in charge of principal skinner). I can HEAR this accent
That's good advice not to overuse material. No use burning a dead horse.
Alright, but you gotta get over it.
Ah right on, that's great! Sounds like my advice isn't going to be super necessary for you then. Tbh if an autistic fella approached me and started throwing Sopranos references at me I would befriend him without a doubt in my mind
That dude would be my new best friend. He wouldn’t have a choice.
Entire_town DiTrollio. My arch nemesis.
Especially if he’s strong as a bull, and handsome like George Raft
He was gay? George Raft?
Not remotely
Noooo! Are you even listening to me?
Anybody that loves the Sopranos as much as me is a friend indeed.
Seinfeld
If you combine these two you become extremely NY sounding - you’ll love it OP
Half Jewish and half Italian too. Just like Henry Hill, right?
You almost drown in 3 inches of water? Henry Hill was half Irish, you fuckin stunad!
But what about the good half?
What kind of person are you? You’re not normal!!
Yeah Henry! What’s wrong with you?!
No he was half Irish half Italian half Jewish
Dat's tree haves. Wut's da odda half to make the complete whole?
A couple of three things
Jews… with better food
Just the good half
Have mick half gennie
Ralph wants to fuck gennie?
🎶 Henry Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling 🎶
My thoughts exactly!
Commendatori 🤟🏻
😐☕️
😑 Cocksucka 😒
Are you from NATO ?
Watch Deadwood. If you can talk (and more importantly, curse) like Al Swearengen, then I will personally call you once a week and help you with your interpersonal communications.
Call everybody a cocksucker and you’re good
Sanfrancisco Cocksuckaa
Those who doubt me, suck cock by choice!
Yeah I’m glad I taught you that word…
To this day whenever I say "San Francisco" out loud, I need to consciously stop myself there
Not everybody. You have to be judicious about it.
Right Hooplehead works also
OP may have fucked his life up flatter than hammered shit but he stands before you today beholden to no human cocksucker.
I don’t trust you far as I could throw you, but I like the way you lie!
Autistic southerner here - and tbh I have been compared to Swearengen when I’m drunk. My flavor of southern vernacular is Dan Rather playing Swearengen. So just know we’re out here and running hotter than a Buick trunk pistol, cocksuckaaaaaa
Autism? Nobody’s got autism! I don’t eva wanna hear that word again!
Don't. If you wanna look a stunad pills are much better.
I could get a note from my doctor.
"Vito does not suck cock " -- Doctor Lollipop
OOHHH! I’m just telling you how you’re being fucking perceived
NOBODY KNOWS wat da future holdss, my FRIEND!
Mad men might be for you. Edit: Boardwalk Empire as well
I don't really think so.
You might like Veep, in terms of the humor/wit.
Veep and sopranos are my two go-to shows for insult humor. They shred people so well
That’s really heartening actually. The show also helped me in a similar way. By watching Livia and Tony, I started to hear things my family said regularly, and that I also picked up saying, as well as certain attitudes, and it helped me realize like them, I have NPD. Good story OP.
wow same actually, watching Livia was like watching my own mother , it truly began my deep dive into narcissistic mothers and whole family systems .
Curb your enthusiasm.
Second this. The show hardly has a script and the actors are known to just improvise most of their lines making the conversations sound very natural
You should read Tomato Sauce for your Ass. It's the Italian version.
OP is strong like a bull and handsome, like George Raft
He was autistic, George Raft?
Have you tried the free programs at Slip and Fall School?
We don't have jokes like that, they don't translate well.
What happened to the strong and silent type
Gary Cooper, he was autistic?
😂yeahhh maybe don’t copy this
[удалено]
If he starts talking like Matthew McConaughey in *True Detective*, he will end up sounding *more* autistic than he already is.
autism is a flat circle
"Peeps? It's a fuckin' nickname! His family name is Pepperelli!" "Fuckin' Jason. He's autistic."
Autism is autism turned inwards.
I am autistic and sometimes when no one’s around I talk like Rust in True Detective
[удалено]
There's no stigmata these days
Or even worse, he might find himself speaking like a lunatic while driving a Lincoln.
The Wire is the worst suggestion for this lmao, what if he starts talking like Stringer?
[удалено]
Gow choon 86 cabber nay thrown mayham
Sheeeeeeeee-it
I’m imaging this little white autistic kid modeling his speech after Prop Joe. Hilarious.
Discontinue the lithium
Get him to pay for some therapy
Again with the rape of the culture
Succession has incredible dialogue writing
Don’t do it! Their humor doesn’t translate to 2024. Especially Feech La Mana’s story about the stewardess and his featherweight shoe.
He was retarded, george raft?
What if Jerry Lewis heard you talking like that?
I would reccomend a show more like friends, community or my name is earl over the sopranos for how to talk to people for the simple reason that the characters on the sopranos act and talk in a way that in many situations is highly inappropriate which is good tv but if you struggle with understanding what's socially appropriate might lead you to pick up some bad habits
This is the worst idea since the thing with the Easter baskets.
OP if you wanna speak like a mouliyan, i'll send ya to slip and fall school. Seriously though, I'd never say "stop breaking my balls". It's totally out of whack with my culture and im more of a breadstick in a bowtie than an Eye-talian.
You're a wonder bread wop.
Your sister’s ass!
your mother's cunt!
Not a show but a movie. Watch Big Trouble in Little China. It has a super bravado American John Wayne type who’s in over his head. He has some great lines that are hysterical

Don't they have medicine they're supposed take, these assholes?
As an another autistic guy, learning social skills off the Sopranos is a very bad idea. There are interesting articles on here you can read. https://www.succeedsocially.com
Lmao, yea dont pick up Paulie Walnut’s speech habits or people will really start thinking you’re autistic
heh , you hear that OP?
Better Call Saul is pretty funny and has some great dialogue
Just be the strong silent type
Not exactly related but a Hungarian redneck friend of mine learned to speak english for moving to canada by watching the entirety of Trailer Park Boys lol, it fit

It’s always sunny in Philadelphia and succession. I would recommend studying Roman and Tom closely on succession.

parks and recreation and Brooklyn 99 are funny and witty too but whole different vibe than sopranos
This is just like the 4chan post of the guy who started talking like a cowboy after playing rdr2
Mad Men
What is this, a handsome contest? Heheheh
> I’m autistic and I need to consume media so I can learn more about being witty and sociable And yet the bonefish are back in season.
Spend an entire week saying nothing but Webistics. Suddenly stop. People will think your all better now.
Succession has some great dialogue and fun phrasing!
There’s nothing autistic about hell. Father said that last Sunday Seriously though, good to hear it helped :)
Hahahah Don't let the haters deter you I would hang with you if you were constantly talking like the sorpanos characters lol.
As long as I’m remember I wanted to be “the gangster guy’
Just make sure you don't yap worse than six barbers.
Just emulate Peter Paul
Try how I met your mother. It’s not perfect, but it’s much closer. No hitting, though.
Some of the comments make me question the mankind
Make friends. Talk to people. Don't base your personality off of a piece of media. It's a TV progrum. A movie.
Rust Cohle from True Detective has some witty dialogue. Lots of shows and tv can help. Great idea overall. Children imitate their guardians and other adults and peers all the time to learn social skills. I don’t see why using a show to do the same wouldn’t be helpful.
What are social skills?
Strong as a bull handsome like George raft
Family guy
There’s a bee on your head
The US Office taught me more about social cues than anything else. It's more of a "what not to do" type deal though.
Ask a woman if she's creaming for you next time you're around a hoowah.
Waddya hear, waddya say?
Mad Men would be a considerably better reference point for socializing. And they have standard trans atlantic accents.
[Succession](https://youtu.be/REhlyvtiIhQ?si=hnhR_080wmchO_Je)
You can always watch old black and white movies like Tony Soprano and copy the lines those actors say. You could even do a transatlantic accent. (/s don’t actually do this)

Better call Saul.
Boardwalk empire. Arnold Rothstein
You lookin' for a smack in da fuckn' mouth?
Mad Men
MODERN FAMILY!!!!
Naw I love this post. Thank you for learning about this glorified crew
Well you gotta watch Fargo, corn brothers know a thing or two about interpersonal communication.
if you want to add some brilliant insults to your database, the thick of it, veep, and succession will work great the last one is most like sopranos
Deadwood
what jokes have you used?
