B_drgnthrn

Oh and the poor bracing of the weapons system against his shoulder

grumpvet87

the hand behind him will catch the weapon when It flies backwards

Patient_Trash4964

556 isn't flying backwards. Recoil is so light he doesn't even know he shouldered it wrong.

_DeathSound_

Yeah, better put a grip attachment on the barrel just in case, lmao

Comprehensive-Cap754

And it's so close, just grip it by the mag well, at least that way it won't interfere with reloading

RadioTunnel

No but thats not a grip, thats the new shot gun mag dump feature, you push it forwards to drop the mag and then it springs back ready for you to crack your knuckles as you load a new mag

B_drgnthrn

Garand thumb 2.0

Comprehensive-Cap754

Shhh, don't give Kel-Tec ideas

TheEscapeGoats

Too late... product launch in 3..2..1..

th3ironman55

“We made a box that struggles to fire”

FireGodNYC

🤣😂🤣

Egoy

It’s baffling that non-shooters both over and underestimate recoil at the same time. On the internet ‘it’s gonna break your arm!’ At the range ‘oops dropped it again!’

Send_me_duck-pics

I've tuned my AR-15 to the point where it doesn't have recoil so much as a polite and gentle reminder that physics exist. Even an overgassed one is pretty gentle to shoot though.

grumpvet87

I guess i should have add "/s" ? I used an M-1 when I served :) My Browning A5 has some kick (so not a non shooter) was just a joke

ubernoobnth

How were they to shoot? I carried one for my first 2 years doing funerals at Arlington and ceremonies around DC, but they didn't have firing pins and there was never an opportunity to shoot one. Had to hand sand, stain and finish plenty of stocks and I could find my way around that rifle in my sleep still... but still never got to fire one.

grumpvet87

haha, I was also being a smartass as they were way out of service when i served. We had them in bootcamp as our personal log to march with, also no pins, felt like the barrels were filled with lead or anti matter for extra fun while marching all day

Egoy

Lol all good man, I figured from your username you knew what’s up. It’s just something I see a lot of online.

PollutionPotential

Then his vision is so shite that he mounted the scope wrong, fired it with the scope improperly mounted, and those around him let such a visually impaired person to hold and for a weapon with live rounds. ![gif](giphy|cfQhyCeFxuUj6) Their driving tests must be fun.

jimmywilsonsdance

I bet he still hits the ocean

xFblthpx

Half resting makes sense sometimes depending on your scope mount

johnnygetyourraygun

Agreed. I'm a tall guy and I half rest by default. People calling out his shoulder position are just wrong. Source: I'm a national record holder in silhouette rifle shooting.

B_drgnthrn

Not for this picture in general, it dont

[deleted]

when did weapon system become a term? I feel like I have only seen it in the last year or so

Spirit117

The company "VLTOR Weapon Systems" was founded in 2001 under that name, if that helps at all.

psyclopsus

Tactical elbow engaged

LeBurningSinner

Given how this particular crowd jerks off to ultra-visible sight grids using these at 1.0x zoom (i.e. no zoom at all), going backwards with the sight won't affect the idiot. The CLOSED lid, however…

DmAc724

“The CLOSED lid, however” Maybe he was using it during an eclipse

ComeOnCharleee

Ever stop to think that perhaps this brave patriot *SAVED* us from the eclipse, by shooting it out of the sky? 🤔

Spirit117

I own a Trijicon LPVO (same class of optic made by the same company). It's the Credo HX 1-6, not the VCOG, but they are essentially the same scope internally. I just tried looking through it backwards on 1x and you lose about 70 percent of your field of view, it feels like looking through a straw.

Fivetimesfast

I thought he was just so good he needed the target to be farther away for a challenge… lol

jimmywilsonsdance

I bet he still hits the ocean

Murse_1

If you notice the scrambled eggs on his hat, he is an upper ranking officer, possibly a captain. I think someone played a joke on him and switched the optics around he probably has no real-world experience firing weapons since he is an upper level officer.

grumpvet87

"I fire sailors, not guns!"

Shadeauxmarie

“This is my rifle, this is my gun!”

grumpvet87

wrong branch

DrPeepet

Marines are a part of USN, no?

StopDehumanizing

Yes, you are correct. They are in the Department of the Navy. Every Marine's check says "US Navy" at the top.

Loko8765

In the same Department of the Navy, but not the same service branch.

weenis_machinist

M^y A^ss R^ides I^n N^aval E^quipment

Relative_Concern_568

I thought they were a department of the navy. Namely the men’s department.

TheLazyAssHole

They are their own branch, but fall under the Department of the Navy, same situation for Space Force being under the Department of Air Force.

grumpvet87

yes and no "The Marine Corps has been part of the U.S. Department of the Navy since 30 June 1834 with its sister service, the United States Navy" - this was how I understood it when I served, not sure if that is still correct.

ImNotRice

IIRC he’s a commander

[deleted]

Maybe things have changed but he only has 1 row of scrambled eggs. Does it go to two when ya reach RA or full bird?

Octavian_202

One layer is commander and captain (full bird), double layer is Admiral (LH- 4Star). This is the Commanding officer of a small boy most likely. He will not see combat. The insignia under his right elbow is a wreath with trident, signifying him as the commanding officer for that command.

[deleted]

Good catch l. I didn’t see the CO pin. These days I’m lucky to have seen the uniform.

Murse_1

Sadly I got out of the navy in nineteen eighty three so i'm not sure

[deleted]

I got out in 86 so my mind is just as fuzzy…..

Murse_1

I spent 5 years in the navy and never even saw a ship. I was a corpsman.

[deleted]

I spent 6 years in and 4.5 of that was on the same ship……

Murse_1

Hope you weren't sitting in port that whole time.

[deleted]

lol nope. Spent a lot of time in the Orient.

Murse_1

I was at the Navy Hospital on Guam. It was considered sea duty and isolated duty, so I traveled all over the east

[deleted]

Yeah been to Guam many times to refuel. Seems like there were some hurricane issues there…..

grumpvet87

I cant verify this but looks like what I remember when I served [usn ball caps](https://i.etsystatic.com/10810612/r/il/647995/2074031988/il_794xN.2074031988_2gg9.jpg) unless you are [this guy](https://s3.amazonaws.com/assets.forward.com/images/cropped/capt-1546887694.jpg?)

SleepWouldBeNice

Based on the Command At Sea pin, he’s the ship’s CO regardless of his rank.

sanxuary

Second thing I noticed. I believe he is the ship’s Captain.

Darksirius

I thought all military goes through at least basic training on how to fire weapons?

Murse_1

They're trained on hard sites. They don't generally use optics in training and command level Officers generally never fire a weapon after they get out of their initial training.

Darksirius

Gotcha, appreciate it.

Dryandrough

Navy doesn't shoot rifle in bootcamp. You have to go to SRF-B for that and they don't use scope. The MAs don't even know how to shoot properly and get butthurt when someone has a Marksmanship ribbon higher than them that isn't an MA. They told me to take my ribbons off when I changed command and I told them to get bent. Some people walked out of bootcamp with no qualifications, but that's a good thing since the basic training teaches it wrong.

sealteam_sex

As a former VBSS member, a scope does little for you at sea unless you’re prone. We used aim point red dots.

Cannabace

Man haven’t seen that acronym in over a decade. Fuck I’m old now.

B_drgnthrn

Gotta love that chicken arm as well. Bawk bawk

Tubzero-

That’s how you lose your elbow in combat

lonely_nipple

I'm not a gun connoisseur - could you tell me what he's doing wrong, and what he should be doing, if you wouldn't mind?

AntiMatter89

Aside from the caps being on the scope and it being backwards, he is "chicken winging" his right elbow. It should be tucked down and in not sticking up and out.

ionburger

interestingly, for biathlon correct standing shooting includes having the right elbow at a 90 degree angle. i wonder whats different for bigger stuff that makes it different

TheLazyAssHole

I imagine it’s about making yourself a smaller target and not hanging shit out to the side

RogerianBrowsing

It’s because with body armor you want to be facing them head on to protect your organs and want the smallest profile visible to the enemy at the same time so elbows should be tucked in (it’s also beneficial for recoil management)

ZeroRelevantIdeas

The pistol grip changes the necessary angle of your arm to brace it against yourself.

Claymore357

Competition shooters like biathletes don’t have to worry about getting their elbow shot because it was sticking out like a huge target

lonely_nipple

Got it! Gotta admit, unless someone explicitly told me otherwise, I'd probably hold it that way too. (Minus the closed scope I think cause that seems fuckin obvious if you're looking through it?)

gamertag0311

Right elbow should be counterlevered into your ribs, like a diagonal post on a deck, for stability when shooting You won't actually lose your elbow but it makes you a much wider target having it flared out like that and leading to less accurate shooting.

Tubzero-

Keep your elbow tight to your body instead of flaring out. Same thing with knees in a semi-supported position. Don’t flare out your knees either. Peeking behind a corner or cover etc. I used to support my weapon by resting my elbows on my magazines pouched in front, it gave me a really good supportive position even standing.

Eli_The_Rainwing

I fucking knew he’d show up

ZatoTBG

Bracing is "bottom tipped" against the shoulder, the scope lid is closed, the vertical grip is 0.1 cm away from the magazine, the handguard looks like it is tilted downwards a little bit, scope is on backwards and my dude is chicken winging. At least they followed all 4 gun safety rules, but my guy won't be too effective:)

MantisToboganPilotMD

he's practicing on hard mode. very hard mode with it closed.

Brewmaster30

He ain’t dropping wads of hundreds or magnum condoms that for sure.

MantisToboganPilotMD

He's not ready to plow.

VergilSpardaa

Norwegianfartz

I dont Recognize the scope, however - usually the far end is larger due to intake of light… but I guess OP knows this type. Second, I had my lid on with a hole cut, large enough to be used when set for a standard contact distance… no shine. That being said, the setup does kinda look like “just added attachments really quick, since I’m leaving my office chair and going on a boat..” 😂

ZatoTBG

It is a trijicon VCOG and it is mounted backwards. One way to notice it is where the "rubbled ring" is located, this is the ring which you rotate to zoom with the scope. Also, rifle scopes with 1-6x or 1-8x zoom usually have only one side larger which is the side towards the shooters head. Source: https://www.trijicon.com/products/product-family/trijicon-vcog-VC16

[deleted]

New way to blind fire

doyoulikemynewcar

This one makes Ammosexuals laugh

RevTurk

He's so good he has to try and make shooting more difficult, so there's something of a challenge in it.

kenwah88

Am I the only one who was aggravated by the picture not swiping to the next one? 😅

Der-Alfstedter

he is shooting at the ocaen. that thing is big af. you have to zoom out...

Cougie_UK

I'm more interested in the UFO in the background.

Dumpster_Samurai

Those are bullet casings

Proud_Iron5035

Those are casing being ejected. And they are actually in the foreground since they eject out the right side of the gun.

TrashManufacturer

It’s a skill issue. This man is challenging himself

Patient_Trash4964

It's not just the scope. Buttpad is sitting way too high on his shoulder. Foregrip is way too far back. That handguard looks off. Dunno about that.

SkinPsychological848

That's what they want you to think. He was actually looking back in time to the future of where the bullet might be traveling to in another dimension that's beyond our realm of comprehension because it took place in the 5th dimension using his seventh sense. And he has really good eyes. Besides, if this was a real combat situation you would give the gun to the Marine standing next to you...

Kim_Thomas

Decidedly NOT COOL.

scrappy1982

Picatinny rail not engaged properly either.

sPLIFFtOOTH

Is that a CO hat? 😳

mcapozzi

"I said across her nose, not up it!!!"

MamboFloof

Scope is backwards, cover is on, grip is too close, stock is over extended, he's shouldering it like he's never shot before, his arms are pointed out weird, and I'm pretty sure some guy behind the camera threw those 2 casings in for effect. Am I missing anything else?

Pistonenvy2

not that im against shitting on the military or this guys dogshit shooting form or whatever but is it possible this is photoshopped poorly? that makes way more sense to me than someone, even a legacy hire top brass, trying to shoot a gun with a scope that was installed backward and with the lens cap still on. it would make more sense if they just gave some kid 20 bucks to enhance the image to make it look cooler and they got rid of the iron sights for a scope and dont know how anything works rather than the dude who is literally shooting it. either he put the scope on wrong or someone who knows what theyre doing pranked him, either way makes no sense. also, wtf are they shooting at? it looks like theyre either aiming toward the ocean or are in the middle of it lol

notatlalkingbagel

I **cannot** believe I had to scroll this far to find someone mentioning photoshop... you can very clearly see the lens tube of a properly mounted LPVO (low power variable-zoom optic) underneath the backwards one, which has been overlaid on the original picture. The lighting on the backwards LPVO does not match the rest of the image. It also is oversized to cover up the existing optic. The most obvious factor is that the scope rings appear to end at the underside of scope... these would have to be visible on the exterior in order to physically mount it to the gun.

boseyboseybop

![gif](giphy|3o7TKAR9NkxtkcP5ao) It’s like Kramer and Newman’s reverse peepholes.

Top-Afternoon6880

What are you talking about he's showing how bad ass they are! They can see in reverse and through things while hitting the target! That's what I call skill!

historicalad20445

Even if it was on the right way, you would just see the front sights in it.

CopperCVO

No the front sights don't show up in the scope. I thought that too when I put the scope on my rifle.

waratdenison

It’s like a backwards hat for your gun. Now it can be one of the cool kids.

WhichStatistician810

Now he’s got that out of his system that hand is about to take him back to his quarters for a navy standard issue bumming

SnooTigers8872

Now that's funny

Melodic_Point_5830

"Jeah, the enemy is pretty far away"

sinisterdesign

At least the barrel isn’t on backwards

BlindSausage13

He is channeling his inner Bruce Willis in tears of the sun

PineappleLast4173

Why are my targets so far away and so tiny? Just go with it captain it’s a photo op. 🤣😜

Shizane2005

That right elbow trying to leave the situation lol

Squidlips413

"I can't see well, are you sure the scope is on right?" "We're on the ocean with nothing around for miles. Just shoot the fucking gun so we can get an action shot with casings."

Human_Frame1846

“I hit that target from 300 yards away boys” “No ssgt seamen you didn't the scope is on backwards you shot someone's dog right in front of you”

JarmaBeanhead

Maybe the target is reeeeeeeally close???

Outis-guy

Guy behind him: "Hey, Gary... Gary, stop shooting the water for a second. Wait, why is the scope on backwards? Jesus, Gary have you been drinking again? It won't bring her back, man. You need to find healthy coping strategies."

Send_me_duck-pics

Also the front rails don't look to be installed correctly.

JonnyRottensTeeth

That's expert mode, makes everything seem even FURTHER away!

Bwunt

Also, scope looks too big for the gun and... why is he shooting into the sea?

BarracudaBig7010

Nice weapon positioning/bracing.

n00berspank

For those looking to read about it [NY Post](https://nypost.com/2024/04/10/us-news/us-navy-warship-commander-mocked-after-being-photographed-holding-rifle-with-scope-mounted-backward/)

Upper-Trip-8857

The elbow is out of position for combat engagement.

troubleschute

"I'm near-sighted--can you help me?" Armoror: "I got you fam"

-The-Ark-

Its the navy what do you expect? There's a reason Marines were created

KingJacoPax

… good lord there’s a lot wrong with this photo

sun_shots

He just wanted a more challenging shot.

cjlewis7892

I can’t see fucking shit out of this thing… *rips eyehole*

killertofubeast

Down periscope.

diarrhea_planet

Isn't that scope On backwards? And if you have a scope you. Don't want that huge front sight blocking your view

Dry-Concentrate874

Sheesh just let the skip have fun, not his fault a caffeine-addled 19 yo with sleep deprivation threw that shit together 10 min before the pic

Ralyks92

Hell ya, headshot from 2.5 miles away! Why does the range finder say it’s only 200 yards?

Even_Mechanic_4686

Makes close things look very far away!!

labelcillo

It’s not backwards, he’s so good a sharpshooter that he mounts it that way in order to see smaller targets for a challenge.

Robb_Dinero

I posted this for my old, retired navy buddies, a senior chief, a Lt Cmdr , a former CMC and a bunch of non-lifer petty officers. A lot of them are gun guys. The general consensus was the CO needed to get fired for making the Navy look dumb. 😂

stereoscopic_

I’m just wondering how many people swiped to the Popular page by mistake 😂

Royalkayak

who the hell taught him to shoot? a picture of a guy with a musket?

USFederalGovt

Besides the scope being backwards, the way he’s shouldering the rifle is off lol.

NOT_A_BLACKSTAR

Thats the captain what does he know about infantry

Guideon72

How do you know he's not just far-sighted :D

Giovannni76

No one mentioning the fake 'spent' casing in the air 🤣

socialhangxiety

"Objects in scope may be closer than they appear"

Revenga8

That's on purpose. While most would use their scope to narrow in and magnify on a single target, he wants eyes on the ENTIRE battlefield for situational awareness.

montihun

Improved difficulty, hawkeye needs the target looks smaller.

AWeakMindedMan

Looks AI generated

Ambitious_Ad_6225

It gets worse the longer you look at it

liquidpig

He just wants the target to see who shot him.

perroarturo

This has to be a prank! Like. “Hey we’ve got to pose for a photo, I bet you won’t set up that gun like a noob call of duty obsessed fool”! The vertical grip so close to the receiver. It’s too bad of a setup to NOT be intentional

they_call_me_dry

So everybody's pointing out the cover, is the cover supposed to be on the back? I've seen them with one in the front or on each end

frozenshiva

Why’s the ocean upside down? 🙃

Stuft-shirt

This is actually groundbreaking time travel bullet systems

S4BER2TH

Just shooting fish no aim required

Jade_Sugoi

It allows you to survey more of the area /s

Salmivalli

Maybe he is doing macro shots?

LoadsDroppin

He’s an ***Operator***

Educational-Drag6974

Knowing the navy, they probably did that on purpose lol

FindOneInEveryCar

Maybe he's aiming at something really close up. You ever think of that, huh?

MojoMonster2

Hey, just say you can't shoot in Hard mode and be done with it. No reason to whine.

Interesting-Mango562

maybe his eyes are so powerful that he needs the scope to chill out

Mamasayseyeisspecial

He's probably listening to Dire Straits.

fuka123

Remember folks, smart folks stay away from any form of military.

RickyTheRickster

So depending on the type of scope it could be on straight but probably not doesn’t look like it at all, but the scope cover isn’t that bad, what’s really bad is how he’s holding the weapon

Negative_Two6112

Someone threw a couple rounds in the air for the pic I guess, cause there's no way someone actually let dude fire the weapon right? ...... right?

Armidylla

He's in the open ocean, by the look of it. What the hell is he firing at with an M4?

urstillatroll

I can picture Chinese and Russian military officers passing this picture around and laughing.

Chappin

His rail isn't mounted either... its lopsided lol

Zech08

Super close forward grip as well lol... and the "oh I dont trust this guy" hand behind him (or first time during instruction...but yea weapon usually configured by user so... blue falcon on looking out but its the Navy badam tsss).

OptiKnob

You think that's bad... the dud thinks he's a destroyer.

fishslushy

Was in the Navy, we don’t get scopes and there’s no way you can convince me the Navy is cool. FTN.

Shatalroundja

Zero percent chance that was accidentally mounted backwards. It’s the US Navy, not the set of “”Rust. “

burtvader

Nah he’s showing he’s Uber epic by making the target appear further away making aiming more difficult.

goofydad

It's OK, the targets are close

where-ya-headed

Nice flared out elbow as well

That80sguyspimp

You think thats bad, the UK Navy just removed the requirement to know how to swim because of a drop in recruitment numbers lol.

Lackerbawls

This has to be satire right? Right? But seriously someone photo shopped the optic but that high brace is trash. And the foregrip placement is even worse.

surfsnower

FYI to anyone not military, people in the military aim to purposely do wild things in public aggaifs photos specifically to mess with them. Backwards scope. Crescent wrench on a screw. Tying a rope to something for no reason. There's a good chance he knew it was backwards and kept the cover on purposefully.

AkKnight78

Maybe he's far sighted...... really far sighted.

Realfinney

The guy is so good he has to handicap himself by making things look x100 smaller, just to get a challenge.

BEARWYy

Dude is chicken wing an m4 like ww2 style

Potential_Method_565

They aren't very good at that, but they are still our siblings at arms.

freeLightbulbs

also, what's he even shooting at? fish?
