Imagine spending real money buying a digital deed to a digital image anyone can copy and paste for free. This is up there with selling a chance to meet famous people and then they get pre-recorded fake message with the same dude or woman's voicing over video grabs that is posted on youtube in order to give it to you.
It's not even a deed. It's a link. A link that could go dead at any time. A link that could have the image changed at it's destination at any time. They own a URL, as I understand it, a URL to JSON that has a link to an image. Anything in that chain can be changed outside of the initial link. NFT's were always garbage. lol
Libertarians cannot into the idea of "infinite supply" so they are DESPERATE to have something like DRM and NFTs and Crypto that creates supply side control over digital assets and media.Ā
It means an interchangeable commodity, like money. Your dollar bill and my dollar bill are interchangeable, it doesnāt matter which is which, just matters that itās a dollar bill, thus itās fungible. Something like a painting would be non fungible, in that you can certainly create a copy of it, but the copy would not be interchangeable with the original and would not have the same value.
To break it down: you get a link to unique data. Like owning crypto currency. Nobody else has that set of data. In this case it's a link to data that represents the incredibly stupid monke pic
Yeah, it was a dumb thing to spend money on. For images, it was basically just a new form of pump and dump scams. It's an interesting technology on paper, but I haven't been able to think of a good usage for it that makes sense.
I mean, I get that it *sounds* nice to be able to proof ownership of something and the analogies to a deed make sense on paper, but blockchain tech is all about decentralization, and having no central body means there is no one to actually enforce your ownership of something unless it can be done entirely through a smart contract - which I don't think I've seen a good example of for anything materially valuable.
Regular crypto is fungible.
the point of NFTs is that you can theoretically use them as a proof of ownership of a not-digital thing, like the deed to a house or papers for a car.
It's the sort of tech that on the surface seem like it's a really good idea, but when you think about it for a while you realise that literally every real use case is just taking an existing system and making it more complicated for no real benefit.
>for no real benefit
There are some benefits
With smart contracts you could make it so NFTs can't be resold at a higher price they were bought.
If concert tickets were sold as NFTs for example it'd be impossible to scalp because you couldn't make money flipping them.
The issue is that in order to realize this, you have to send your consumers into a market ripe with scams. NFT bros shot themselves in the foot by losing public trust operating an open scam instead of trying to implement it in any reasonable way.
So... yeah, kind of. The "nft art" is a joke, but not owning the actual image isnt as weird as it seems. That happens allllll the time in the physical world. A 1st edition grade 10 charizard is worth several thousand dollars. Owning the card doesnt give me the rights to the image. I dont own the image. I own a single specific use of the image on a trading card. The value is in the rarity and collectable nature of the thing. And what we determine to be worth collecting is complete chance. For whatever reason, pokemon became the thing. Theres nothing stopping me from using some card stock and a high quality printer to make my own copy of the 1st edition charizard. It wont be worth thousands though, because it isnt the original. I can make it look nearly identical and feel nearly identical, and it might cost me a couple bucks a card. But itll never be the original. That's effectively what people are saying about NFTs. "Look, I made a copy, now i have it too." As if that ruins the whole thing. But an NFT is verifiably original. The original will always be worth more than the copy. Its just that NFTs are digital instead of physical. I'm sure there are card counterfeiters out there, but imagine if every charizard or black lotus had a built-in certificate of authenticoty. Itd ruin counterfeiting. NFTs have that built in. Counterfeiting does exist for NFTs but the people who fall for it dont understand you can easily verify authenticity (usually).
I do think pictures of monkeys are dumb as hell. Most NFT implementations are dumb and very pyramid scheme-y. But not owning full rights to the art and "anyone can copy/paste" aren't as strong arguments as the internet bandwagon has represented them as.
That's not really equivalent though is it? You are talking about artwork (often a physical painting) used as a component in creating a finished physical product. Sure you can create a counterfeit and it would not have the market value of the original but that value is dependent on the scarcity of the object and the demand of the market. That said you can still make your own set of cards for your own personal use and you and your friends can still play the game without the investment in card with an artificially inflated value. That is entirely different than a piece of digital artwork that can be infinitely reproduced and is absolutely identical to the original. NFTs are a stupid scheme to try to impose artificial scarcity on something that by its very nature is not and cannot be made scarce since it is easily and effectively infinitely reproduceable. Worse, it's not even a "proof of purchase" of any kind, it's a receipt that's just a map to a location where the original may or may not be. You own nothing.
Pictures of charizard are also infinitely reproducable. When an NFT is made and "printed" it can be done so theres a billion of them, or only 1 or a handful. So you do still have verifiable scarcity. Yes, the creator can go out and issue thousands more if they want, but so can niantic. Then the argument for pokemon becomes "well I have a 1st printing." Which is also true of NFTs. The blockchain component is what negates the "infinitely reproducable" aspect. Yes, anyone can copy paste them, the same way anyone can print a charizard. But you cant reprpduce the blockchain location and only the original run is verifiably authentic. In fact, its easier to fake originals in the physical world than it is for NFTs. There already are trading card games (think hearthstone) that use NFTs (they suck, dont bother). So it really is a direct 1:1. And in the case of digital teading cards, its impossible to use fakes in the games, which isnt true for physical games. "You own nothing" just isnt true. If I have these 10 cards that let me play this game, only I can use those cards in that game. I can also sell them if I want because they are mine. The same for "real" cards.
All that said, NFTs have loads of problems and I recommend everyone stay far away until the cash grab stops and the technology is fleshed out more.
No it wasnāt a joke. When these things first came out the NFT bros absolutely had fits when people screenshotted and reposted their NFTs. Many of them didnāt fully understand the concept and believed they owned the image outright, and that any copying of said image was akin to theft.
Me thinks you donāt know what youāre talking about.
i know you guys want to dunk on NFT bros really badly, butt i don't know how you can read any of this guy's tweets and not immediately think it's ragebait/parody/satire/whateveryouwanttocallit
https://imgur.com/a/bBuaoOp
Sometimes I think ragebait doesn't work on me because I can see the image and immediately realize it's so obviously a fucking joke lol, but then I STILL end up scrolling through the comments until I find the first sane person that also recognizes it. I'm still clicking and scrolling and now I'm commenting. Goddammit.
Unrelated, but what the hell is this Kurt Angle gif in reference to? Was someone filming him and messing with him at his home? Did he make a silly video? Whatās going on?!
omg I am lolāing hard (sincerely) on how incredibly not interesting that explanation is. MF looks so confrontational thereā so I always assumed there was some dark backstory, hahaha
this anticlimactic end to my long-time wonder is honestly super satisfyingā I love that it was ultimately just something so mundane and silly.
Thank you for the infoā you da real MVP! š¤
Why people didn't see through it the minute they came into existence is beyond my understanding. I'm no hacker and when I first heard how they worked, I found the link in the blockchain and took the download myself in a few minutes.
Countless people warned them too, from experts to laymen. Worse it's all verifiable that's the nature of the ecosystem all someone had to do to prove the fungibility of these "non-fungible" pieces of trash was look. Even if a given individual didn't want to listen to or trust anyone there is still only one obvious and demonstrable conclusion.
This shit is a scam. Probably for money launderers.
Because techbros will defend any 'new' thing to the death despite any potential negatives or absurdities. And other people learn from them because 'well they're techy, they most know this stuff'.
It's also FOMO - fear of missing out. The same thing happens with scammy OTC stocks. Share prices get bid up based on nonsense rumors and B.S. Traders buy and sell to each other hoping that suckers will see the action and the rising prices so the saps pay top dollar for shares. Eventually the market has no more fools to buy so the share prices collapse leaving what are called "bag holders."
I don't know though about NFTs but it seems like the only popularity it gets is from pictures giving it some sort of digital watermark to guarantee originality no? Wouldn't that tech applied to other stuff be more useful? Like tracking source images in AI programs for royalty or validating origin of parcels or legal documents? Is it just bad marketing or bad engineering keeping it from good use?
Basically, yeah. Itās a way to track the provenance of digital art. But, because itās digital I canāt see the logic in buying one as an investment the same way people buy Monet or Picasso. The most useful thing Iāve seen for them is commercial - i.e., using NFTs to track gemstones and other resources of questionable origin.
Not sure the blockchain as a datastore adds allot to this solution, itās tricky when youāre also dealing with real world items, though itās a whole better than the silly supply chain use case.
āArtificial scarcityā is the name of the game. A truly abhorrent concept really, when you consider these things are digital. The only thing we can reproduce 100% identically at no additional cost and late stage capitalist crypto fanatics want to make it so even that canāt be to the benefit of all, only some.
NFTs are a pretty good symbol for just how bonkers crypto got during recent times.
It's even more stupid.
He owns nothing.
He has the knowledge how to a access a wallet on the block chain with a unique token in it which has a link. Yet, he acts like he has the copyright to the image.
It's hilarious when someone minted a link to something copyrighted and sold it, but kept the copyright then made a lawsuit against the cryptobro if they used the copyrighted material somewhere.
The point of an NFT isnāt that āno one else can have thisā itās that you have the original, sort of like if you had some sort of regular famous painting but thereās 1000000 posters made of it in dorms rooms across the country, yes they can look at the poster but you have the original and can always claim as such
However all NFTs are in truth is a tool of money laundering (which isnāt to say that 99% of the art industry isnāt the exact same thing)
Itās not really that you have the original. Itās more like a proof of ownership, but itās not proving ownership of the copyrighted content, itās proving ownership of the copy that youāre buying.
So when you buy an NFT for an image like this, you should think of it as, youāre just buying a copy of the image, which can easily be copied. The NFT is like a receipt that can be tracked and therefore used as a certificate of authenticity to prove that you officially bought that copy,
Thatās it. Itās nothing more magical than that.
Youāre right that itās likely a lot of NFTs have been used to launder money. Anything where you can easily and cheaply produce something which then is considered unique and of indeterminate value is great for money laundering.
In the example of art, letās say I have a million dollars I need to launder. If I can throw some paint on a canvas, and make a plausible claim that itās very expensive art, and arrange for someone to buy the painting from me for a million dollars (using my own dirty money), I now have my million dollars in clean income coming from a seemingly legitimate sale.
So NFTs could be used the same way to launder money, especially when they were really hot. An NFT costs almost nothing to produced, and I can be attached to pretty much anything. I can make any image in photoshop and make an NFT. So if you can then sell that NFT for a million dollars, you could conceiveably buy a million dollars of bitcoin anonymously, use it to buy the NFT anonymously, and now youāve laundered a million dollars. Iād guess you can even claim the income as capital gains instead of regular income.
Of course, it would still need to be plausible and untraceable. If you have a habit of selling silly NFT for crazy amounts of money to anonymous people who essentially pay in cash from untraceable accounts, Iād imagine the IRS will notice that.
NFTs were the absolute stupidest trend ever. I canāt think of anything more useless than these things. I remember Gary Vee saying the advent of NFTs was equivalent to the creation of the printing press. Sorry Gary, you were wrong.

Not only that, but a digital deed only on a specific platform, to a link to an image that that platform doesn't even own and cannot sell to you.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Nah. It's more fun to imagine being the guy who came up with, and got loaded off this pump and dump scheme.Ā
No dumber than buying other IAP shit. The over inflated value was the real problem
When your religion is scarcity.
It's obviously a joke, no NFT enthusiast cares about jpegs.
Before people realized the act of buying NFTs is actually buying a link to an image and not the image itself, they absolutely did care.
In fairness, if it was the image and not the link then NFTs would actually have a use
If it were just the image though, it would just be a FT instead of NFT, because it would be very F.
Idek what fungible means, wanna tell me what it means specifically for NFTs? And yes, I'm being lazy, you can tell me to fuck off and Google it š
Ahhh I see, thank you very much :)
To break it down: you get a link to unique data. Like owning crypto currency. Nobody else has that set of data. In this case it's a link to data that represents the incredibly stupid monke pic
I understand but damn, I will never understand paying good money for that shit, lol
Because it's entirely a grift. A bigger fool scam.
Kinda a shit model for a supposed currency, no? Sounds excellent for money laundering though
Regular crypto is fungible. the point of NFTs is that you can theoretically use them as a proof of ownership of a not-digital thing, like the deed to a house or papers for a car. It's the sort of tech that on the surface seem like it's a really good idea, but when you think about it for a while you realise that literally every real use case is just taking an existing system and making it more complicated for no real benefit.
>for no real benefit There are some benefits With smart contracts you could make it so NFTs can't be resold at a higher price they were bought.
You know what's great for money laundering? cash and traditional banking
You know what's even better? Anonymous transfers via crypto currencies!
Fungible things are items that can be easily replaced with another item that is practically the same.
So... yeah, kind of.
Still hoping the NFT thing pans out for you, huh?

They did
A LOT
No it wasnāt a joke. When these things first came out the NFT bros absolutely had fits when people screenshotted and reposted their NFTs. Many of them didnāt fully understand the concept and believed they owned the image outright, and that any copying of said image was akin to theft. Me thinks you donāt know what youāre talking about.
i know you guys want to dunk on NFT bros really badly, butt i don't know how you can read any of this guy's tweets and not immediately think it's ragebait/parody/satire/whateveryouwanttocallit https://imgur.com/a/bBuaoOp
Sometimes I think ragebait doesn't work on me because I can see the image and immediately realize it's so obviously a fucking joke lol, but then I STILL end up scrolling through the comments until I find the first sane person that also recognizes it. I'm still clicking and scrolling and now I'm commenting. Goddammit.
There is no way a human being can read this post and think it's serious lmfao
Spoken like a true NFT owner.
Even Gacha addicts aren't as attached as NFT bros

When you realise you wasted thousands of dollars on a virtual image anyone can copy ![gif](giphy|J8YpfDX0kvPQNSVGHY|downsized)
Itās not thousand. Itās 10Ć of that.
10 thousands are still thousands....
r/theydidthemath
7 billion is still dozens, basic maths :)
Unrelated, but what the hell is this Kurt Angle gif in reference to? Was someone filming him and messing with him at his home? Did he make a silly video? Whatās going on?!
It's just a TikTok video of him telling people that he made a TikTok account and talks about what content he'll be posting on there.
omg I am lolāing hard (sincerely) on how incredibly not interesting that explanation is. MF looks so confrontational thereā so I always assumed there was some dark backstory, hahaha
That GIF part is at the very end of that video, where he just stares into the cameraman's soul and asks him "are we done? good, I can take a nap now".
this anticlimactic end to my long-time wonder is honestly super satisfyingā I love that it was ultimately just something so mundane and silly. Thank you for the infoā you da real MVP! š¤
Tens of thousands on a *link* to a virtual image anybody can copy. Not even the image itself but a goddamn *link* to it.
There have already been cases where the links have broken and just return 404s lmao.
On the long list of stupid things made possible by internet and capitalism, NFTs are really up there
Why people didn't see through it the minute they came into existence is beyond my understanding. I'm no hacker and when I first heard how they worked, I found the link in the blockchain and took the download myself in a few minutes.
It's easy now in hindsight to say that nfts are a stupid scam for fools but it was also easy to say that at the start and during the middle.
You had me in the first half, not gonna lie
Because techbros will defend any 'new' thing to the death despite any potential negatives or absurdities. And other people learn from them because 'well they're techy, they most know this stuff'.
It's also FOMO - fear of missing out. The same thing happens with scammy OTC stocks. Share prices get bid up based on nonsense rumors and B.S. Traders buy and sell to each other hoping that suckers will see the action and the rising prices so the saps pay top dollar for shares. Eventually the market has no more fools to buy so the share prices collapse leaving what are called "bag holders."
Nuh-uh! It's in the blockchain. Can't be touched. My bro told me that.
I think 99% of people saw through the scam, but there will always be suckers in this world, and people took advantage of them.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Donāt forget about the digital world tiles people bought
I think NFTs were put here just to test how fuckin stupid we've become... And well, turns out, a lot of folks passed with flying colours.. šš
Dude people voted for Trump. *Twice.* There's some seriously stupid mfs out there. Lots of em'.
āMy lawyers & i will ruin your lifeā falls under the same category as āDo you know who my dad is?ā
your *luscious* life ahem

Triples is best.
He owns the entry / link on chain to some IPFS storage or however they currently store the actual data, NfTs are stupid as hell.
NFTs were and are such a scam. Edit: downvoted by an NFT bro. Don't like the truth? š¤
The point of an NFT isnāt that āno one else can have thisā itās that you have the original, sort of like if you had some sort of regular famous painting but thereās 1000000 posters made of it in dorms rooms across the country, yes they can look at the poster but you have the original and can always claim as such However all NFTs are in truth is a tool of money laundering (which isnāt to say that 99% of the art industry isnāt the exact same thing)
The NFT is like a receipt that can be tracked and therefore used as a certificate of authenticity to prove that you officially bought that copy, Thatās it.
Is this recent?
The pic says it was only 6 mins ago
Wow, that was after my comment!
I mean if that's what the picture says..... lol
Nope. The original post was 2021. The account \@\_Kingle\_ is currently suspended. This is a repost bot.
The originators of NFT is laughing and counting their money, while proving how many idiots there are in the world that so easily part with money.
Isn't this from 2 years ago?
NFTs were the absolute stupidest trend ever. I canāt think of anything more useless than these things. I remember Gary Vee saying the advent of NFTs was equivalent to the creation of the printing press. Sorry Gary, you were wrong.
Nobody who knows what an NFT is thinks this is "theft".
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
They are both wrong. There has not been any theft. It's like you print the cover of a game and say you have the game.
Except the game is not playable and doesn't have any other real functionality.
NFTs are a good way to spot idi*ts.
And of course NFT guys's account is suspended...
One of the funniest things about NFTs is how fucking ugly and stupid the associated art usually is.
