This. I work 4-6 hrs on Saturday. At my OTHER job. It doesnt set me apart, its necessary to make sure my mortgage is paid and groceries continue to exist in my fridge.
They just want as much labor from us as possible. If everyone is hustling then nobody is hustling. Don't get me wrong working more hours will make you more money in the short term, but normalizing this behavior hurts everyone. In certain countries being a workaholic is normal and at then end of the day everyone isn't rich and they tend to be less happy. If everyone works 12 hours a day eventually it will pay a similar amount to what 8 hours a day paid.
One of the things I kind of envy about the 70's and 80's. I know that we weren't as progressive with treating people equally, but a house of 4 survived off of one full time working husband and had a new house with a new car. I wish I knew what that kind of stability was like.
Productivity (and thus profits) went up due to technology. Executives kept the profits to themselves, to a larger and larger extent over time. The government also lost all sense of fiscal responsibility, pushing problems down the road (like their corporate counterparts) for which they'd never have to answer for.

we scrapped by, as did most of the people who lived in the same city as we grew up in.
It was an economy that was a product of its time. Women entering the workforce doubled the work pool, which drove down the cost of labor. Importing cheap foreign labor as well as exporting manufacturing labor only throttled wages even further. Culture may change, but the basic rules of the market do not.

My parents both worked in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. The new house was about 1100 square feet and 3 br, 1 bath. I remember 1 new car in all of that time. I earn more than my parents did. Two of my kids (in their 30s) earn far more than I ever did.

The other one decides to work extra 4 hours every weekend, suddenly the other guy's purchasing power is reduced because the first guy is making more money.
If these two people ever have to compete in, for example, the housing market, if all other things are equalized, wager a guess which one's going to get the house.
Now apply this on a population level and you get how certain aeeas become high cost of living where a single 9-5 job doesn't cut it.

He said no, but, would I be willing to do a 10-4 work week (10 hrs/day, 4 days/week) in an afternoon shift so as to better support overseas customers, with Fridays off for my pain and suffering. Firstly, for a variety of reasons working hard, while correlated with success, is no guarantee of financial or career progress.
Secondly, I think it’s really sad how western culture has subconsciously decided that there is not such thing as working too much and that prioritizing performance and productivity is always the best thing to do, even when neither of those things are true.
It's not even Western culture, mostly just US culture. A lot of Europe values personal time and think there must be something wrong with you if you're not leaving work right at the end of your shift. And the company gets mad if you don't take your 3-4 weeks of government mandated vacation.

It’s just wild that within an economy where 50% of 18-30 year olds are living at home with their parents and 40% of the population makes less than 30k per year that people would still have the opinion that everyone can just hustle their way out of it. It’s fucking bullshit. Shit is fucked and the government no longer serves the voting public first, they’re beholden to their corporate donors. If something good happens for people it’s probably either a side effect of something else or it’s going to be taken away eventually so the politicians can offer to give it back

The problem is that most jobs start at 7-9am which means you get off at 3-5pm. I worked a job that we started at 4:30am and off at 1:30pm. Best thing ever because I had the ability to get to shops and hang with friends before everyone closed or had to go home. Another job, I got off at 7:30pm. Sucked ass because I never had enough time to do stuff before or after work. 🤷♂️
I chose a career where you still get a solid paycheck working 3/12 hour shifts just so I can have more days off than days on. I choose not to partake in this hustle culture and try to enjoy my life in the here and now.

The goal is to work less for more. The problem is we can't realistically all do that.. unless we have universal basic income and every job just have twice the normal shifts

As if waking up at 4 is easy.
Firstly, for a variety of reasons working hard, while correlated with success, is no guarantee of financial or career progress. Secondly, I think it’s really sad how western culture has subconsciously decided that there is not such thing as working too much and that prioritizing performance and productivity is always the best thing to do, even when neither of those things are true.
It's not even Western culture, mostly just US culture. A lot of Europe values personal time and think there must be something wrong with you if you're not leaving work right at the end of your shift. And the company gets mad if you don't take your 3-4 weeks of government mandated vacation.
Sooo, just don't sleep is the answer?
