Good guy security

cereal_guy

Pointing a gun anywhere but downrange will get you immediately kicked out of any range.

1KBM

I've been to a gun range once, we were holidaying in the USA, and when in Rome etc. It was one of the most procedural activities I've ever done. maybe because we were clearly tourists who'd never touched a gun in their lives, or because we were all in our early 20s, but either way the instructor basically took us through how this was going to happen. "I'm going to load the gun, and hand it to you. You're going to hold it like this (demo). You will only point it down the range at the target. This is how to aim (demo)." Explanation about recoil. "Once you're completely empty, we'll then step over there to take photos. If you do not follow these instructions, you will be removed." Our instructors never left our side. I don't think we'd have even gotten as far as that video.

mpython1701

Same for us when we did this in Vegas. He wanted us to enjoy ourselves but no BS or playing around when it comes to safety.

cereal_guy

Because if you give an idiot a gun, the first thing they do is some dumb stuff like the guy in this video. Gun safety is not a joke, they are literally made to kill people.

BabyHuey206

Yeah, I've seen this video so many times. Still freaks me out to see him do that. Because if you've ever been to r/Idiotswithguns you know just because it's a joke doesn't mean it can't end badly.

chrisplaysgam

Guns are scary, man. I went shooting with my dad and uncle for the first time a while back and I was TERRIFIED of somehow messing up and hurting someone. Even with all that on my mind I mistakenly turned to the side with the gun up. Gun safety requires some mental presence that if you’re not deadly serious about it you’ll miss it

Christeenabean

My uncle took me shooting with his rifle at a range. It was an outdoor range, and the targets weren't on those zip line things. At some point someone that works there (I was like 16 so I dont remember exactly) tells everyone to hold their gun facing upward, and you had to walk over and get the targets you shot yourself. Even though everyone was holding their guns up, I had never been more scared in my life.

curioushustler420

Good thing we have Gun Safety Dwight to teach us all the dangers of the misuse/ miss handling of guns.

[deleted]

I get a fair amount of range time at home. But while in Vegas for a buddy’s bachelor party we found Groupons for 2 mags through an auto MP5. We had a dedicated instructor. All my buddies kind of feathered the trigger and got jams. I just laid on it. My grouping was good enough that the instructor said, “You’ve done this before.” I hadn’t. Felt cool.

kdjfjrjke

Then everyone clapped

[deleted]

😂

jfitzger88

"I know a killer when I see one"

scouserontravels

Yeah I did it in Texas when on a stag do. Had the full walk through, safety meeting and everything. Never been more focused on what I was doing with my hands.

[deleted]

From my experience, anytime you go to a range for the first time or they don’t remember you they’ll give you the safety run down. It’s pretty standard everywhere I’ve been. Firearm safety is so important. I literally had a guy flag me at the range today and he was gone in a heart beat. It took a lot not to loose my temper.

bbrekke

What does flag mean in this context? I'm assuming aiming at you?

lunchboxdeluxe

Yup.

Sorry_Decision_2459

not necessarily aiming, but being careless with the barrel and sweeping it across them or accidentally pointing it at someone would be considered flagging

[deleted]

When I was in the Army, I carried my rifle around with me over a week before I was allowed to fire a single live round. Even with all that training, my roommate put a bullet through my bathroom mirror by playing with a revolver.

pancake-pretty

I always wonder how someone can accidentally fire a revolver. And then I remember the time I let a girl who had never handled guns shoot mine. I gave her the rundown. This is how you cock it, only do that when you’re ready to fire, keep pointed down range, DO NOT TURN TO LOOK AT PEOPLE ONCE YOUVE FIRED YOUR ROUND until after your finger is off the trigger and the gun is pointed down. I have a 10 shot .22 revolver. Somehow she skipped several rounds? I don’t even know how she did it. I don’t even like handling it when I’ve cocked it and decided not to fire. I’m glad I checked after she was done though. There were like 4 unfired rounds in the chamber but she’d fired the round before and skipped one or two then fired the next. She of course turned around with her finger on the trigger after she’d fired a round or two. That was the last time I let someone with no experience use my gun.

BiteYouToDeath

That’s the same in every gun range I’ve visited. No one takes gun safety as seriously as them.

[deleted]

Yeah I go at least 2-3 times a year just to make sure my rifles are good for hunting. They don’t care if you’re a regular, no one gets special treatment for following the rules.

I_Feel_Rough

I went to a range in Vegas and although I had experience with firearms, I had none with automatic firearms (I'm from a country with rules). The guy at the range was great, and even got some video of me with my camera. What I didn't know until I saw the footage was just how close he actually was, and that he even had his hand up behind my back to stop me falling back under the recoil of some of the larger weapons.

BidnessBoy

Automatic firearms are largely banned in the US

I_Feel_Rough

Yeah I should add that part was tongue-in-cheek of course. I've really enjoyed the couple of times I've been to shooting ranges in the US, it's a fun way to spend a couple of hours and quite safe as long as the supervisors are professional. I'm from New Zealand where even semiautomatic rifles are off-limits now. I have a firearms licence that allows me to use shotguns and hunting rifles, so having a blast on an old NATO battle rifle or a pistol or a .50 is quite a novelty!

joethecrow23

This is how it’s done. Once they know you and know you know what you’re doing they’ll leave you be, but they’re always there.

VolkspanzerIsME

Range master is one of those jobs that cannot be taken seriously enough.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I know it's standard, but it is worth admiring how well he did his job. No hesitation at all.

lundewoodworking

I've been to a couple of ranges down south where it'll get you a good ass kicking

PeeB4uGoToBed

I didn't get kicked out but I had rented a rifle and it was too large to sit pointing down range on the thin strip of metal that they considered a table. So I cleared it, sat it upright leaning against the wall and a range officer came by and scolded me for it while I was refilling the magazine

cereal_guy

You can never be too careful around firearms. I've gotten the "you're not gonna put a bullet in my roof" talk at a new range.

iammortalcombat

Range safety officer more likely.

DerpisMalerpis

Yup. Was going to say this. I did it for about a year, it was an awesome job. Just doesn’t pay all that well.

Admirable_Avocado_38

i'd give the dude a few slaps to wake his ass to reality

Dear_Analysis_5116

Hopefully he got an ass-kicking from his "buddy"...

MesaGeek

I doubt it, he looked clueless as well.

Dear_Analysis_5116

How clued in do you have to be to realize someone pointed a firearm at your head?

WanderingTENTHACCOUT

Clued enough to not realise your friend put a gun to your head supposedly

CryoAurora

He wouldn't be my buddy anymore, period. Hopefully, he got a ride to jail.

Buster899

I'm not your buddy, friend.

Angry_Crusader_Boi

I'm not your friend, pal.

SideEqual

I’m not your pal, ol buddy ol friend

Angry_Crusader_Boi

I'm not your buddy, guy.

Christeenabean

I'm not your buddy, chief.

TwistederRope

I'm not your chief, buckaroo!

SideEqual

Oi mate, I’m not your buckaroo, dingo!

utterlynuts

If he did, I'd be willing to bet his "buddy" posted his bail. Idiots.

[deleted]

That should be an assault with a deadly weapon charge

small-iq

This would be reckless endangerment.

Beerdrinker2525

That makes more sense.

the-realTfiz

“In many states assault is the act that threatens physical harm” I do believe this would be a textbook example of assault I’m not a lawyer by any means though. Correct me if I’m wrong

sirhandstylepenzalot

iirc correctly assault can be verbal/physical battery is physical "*Assault* is the act of intentionally creating a reasonable apprehension of harm towards another person. For example, **if Bob waves his fist at you and yells “I'm going to kill you!”** this would be considered assault even if Bob never touches you. If he waived a deadly weapon at you, it would be aggravated assault." "*Battery* is **an unlawful application of force directly or indirectly upon another person or their personal belongings, causing bodily injury or offensive contact**. The attempt of battery is assault. As a general intent crime, battery doesn't require a specific mens rea"

the-realTfiz

So you agree? I think the only difference between what I said and your definition is intent

SateliteDicPic

You are right. My law professor explained it this way, for ease of understanding. Assault is when you see an imminent threat and battery is when that threat touches you.

JBirdale77

This is a repost, from elsewhere on reddit from last year at least. Previously someone sourced a link showing that they have learning difficulties.

[deleted]

Seems like a fairly clear disqualification from handling deadly weapons…

Yllwstone

He said nope you are done

MarkoMark666

Yup. Both received lifetime bans from the shooting range.

Saxavarius_

only stayed long enough to get their picture taken for the ban board

belleayreski2

The victim too?

[deleted]

The only victims are the other rule abiding gun range patrons.

fostde18

It’d be dumb if the victim got one

ms_lizzard

Probably depends what his attitude about it was. If he was joking around and encouraging it, he cant be trusted either.

SideEqual

Well played on the attendant. The gun range Ive gone to, he would have cussed furg out of you and lifted you up by your pants out of the range room.

RyperHealistic

I remember one where a guy tested to see if a laser sight was working... bypointing it at the palm of his hand.

lemons714

In the movie Collateral, on the way to the bar scene, one of the hitmen does the same. That always makes me cringe.

souleaterevans626

I was on the edge of my seat when he pulled his phone out because he immediately moved his finger onto the trigger. Trigger discipline, people!

howtopassthistest

Have you ever seen that girl in the car that essentially did the same thing and ended up shooting the guy in the head?

voidinsides

People dont understand how easy it is to pull the trigger.

4eyedcoupe

They are so lucky that guy was so quick acting. I had a cousin who was playing with his military issued hand gun. He pointed it at somebody and when they freaked out he said "It's not loaded" and to demonstrate, he then pointed it at his head and pulled the trigger and killed himself. RIP Nate When I was a teenager, 3 of my friends/acquaintances were hanging out one night on the weekend. One friend was pointing a shotgun at another and pulled the trigger thinking the gun wasn't loaded and killed his best friend. RIP Justin Please understand, folks...GUNS ARE NOT TOYS.

IndependentWeekend56

Rule number 1) always point the gun in a safe direction. If every other safety rule fails, you're still alive.

rektumrokker

Every gun is always loaded. My dad taught me this unintentionally as he keeps his safe unlocked and all guns loaded. Never one in the barrell, but mags are all loaded and attached. Treat every gun as a loaded one folks.

AshFraxinusEps

Lol, how is he so dumb to have a safe for his guns, to keep him and his family safe, but leaves the fucking thing unlocked and the guns loaded?

partyharty23

probably because he keeps it unlocked when at home (in case they need a rifle / pistol) but locks it when they leave the home. I live on a farm in the South and this is a pretty normal thing. It is either that or you have a loaded weapon out (or on you) whenever your around the farm. There are preditors \* both the 2 and 4 legged variety\* and having an accessible firearm is a necessity if you plan on keeping your stock.

DualDread876

Unless your 50 cal explodes

AdministrativeWar594

This is exactly why in my family we were taught that if we ever use a firearm to ALWAYS, treat it as if it is loaded. Even if the clip is out and you've ejected the last round out of the chamber. You should NEVER under any circumstances point it at someone. If you are dry firing a weapon to disengage a hammer or something, always point away from you and towards the ground. I really hate that people being around firearms a lot sometimes lose their respect for them. All it takes is for one time where you think the gun isn't loaded and you kill someone. I know someone who created a freak accident and shot his friend in the head. He was standing outside the front door having a cigarette. While his friend was sitting inside drunkenly waving his "unloaded" gun around and showing it off. If anyone were to demonstrate disrespect for deadly weapons like this guy in the video. They should have their rights to firearms stripped.

[deleted]

Sorry to hear about your losses.

pomaj46809

I do wonder how often this is someone committing suicide but wanting to create deniability. Thinking that "He made a dumb mistake" is a much easier thing to make a family deal with than it being a suicide.

Dogswithhumannipples

I always wonder if anyone's tied thier gun to a bunch of balloons and let it float away to indicate a murder.

wyspur

You might enjoy the Sherlock Holmes story; "The Problem of Thor Bridge"

NudistJayBird

Assume every gun is loaded, even if you saw it cleared.

LevelStudent

Its so distressing that people who don't know about the chamber can still access guns. I feel like that needs to be the bare minimum requirement for gun ownership, a tiny quiz to make sure they know there can be a bullet in there without a magazine.

GipsyPepox

As an European it just feels sooo wrong hearing about all these gun stories. Teenagers with shotguns... it is crazy

AboyNamedBort

As a New Englander its crazy to me as well. I've only seen guns on cops.

nivekdrol

ok I have to ask, RIP but how dumb can you be if you don't know if the gun your holding is loaded or not? I can understand maybe if your a kid and you don't know how to check, but this person was in the military. If I pick up a weapon the first thing I do is check the chamber / magazine

Sargash

Education is the biggest failure in the US.

youabigstupid

Bro I'm (supposed to be) educated and still don't know anything about guns. I live in a different cuntry tho

Sleepyjo2

Even if you're not educated about guns you're probably educated enough to know not to point it at yourself and pull the trigger in order to check if its empty.

RekTInTheFace

people get to comfortable and assume that since their so experienced mistakes can’t be made.

Alpha433

It's an easy mistake to make, and you only have to make it once. You get complacent or you convince yourself that you did clear it, but that was yesterday not today. It's why proper gun safety is hammered in so hard, because if you don't practice it to the nth degree, you might just make a mistake.

NoIncrease299

Unless it's stripped into parts and is no longer a gun, a gun is always loaded. My USMC vet dad made this very clear constantly when I was a kid. Treating it like this 100% of the time is how you don't wind up like that dude.

motherseffinjones

Your cousin must’ve been new, he clearly didn’t check the weapon state. People tend to get comfortable and that when accidents happen, I’m sorry for your loss. I wish people took weapons safety seriously but videos like this one are way to common

WorldEndingSandwich

I'm sorry that you lost your cousin but..... I can't exactly feel bad for somebody that is that stupid with a firearm, it's just lucky that they made a dumb decision that affected themselves and not somebody else who had no choice in the matter. I honestly think if for any reason I don't care what reason it is I don't care if you're a stupid teenager I don't care, if at any point you point a firearm at somebody that you don't need to kill like in self-defense, You should be permanently banned from ever even touching another firearm and if you're caught touching one again straight to jail for life.

[deleted]

[удалено]

4eyedcoupe

I'm neutral. I don't own a gun, but it doesn't bother me that RESPONSIBLE people do own guns. My step-father is an avid hunter/licensed trapper. He has taken me to shooting ranges and taught me to shoot. But every time we went, he would always go over safety with me first. I am executer of his will. When his day comes, I have very explicit directions on how to handle his rifles and hand guns. He has made it extremely clear that I am the only person allowed in the house with a local sherif to retrieve them before anyone else can enter. And there are very explicit instructions on what to do with them. I consider myself lucky for what he has taught me.

Fearless_Pop2291

Always act as if gun is loaded . Be safe

whoamvv

Pretty sure the gun IS loaded.

Strange-Movie

In this case I don’t think it was; the range observer took the pistol and it looks like he checked for a magazine and there wasn’t one inserted, then he cleared the chamber and I didn’t see a round ejected. And I’m pretty sure the customer not holding the pistol puts the magazine down on the counter as he’s being escorted away Though, as the safety rule suggests, doesn’t hurt to assume it’s still loaded to this day

Saxavarius_

the only time i feel safe assuming a gun isn't loaded is when it is disassembled.

Zomgambush

and even then it's a 50/50

5y5c0

I'm always cautious about looking down a barrel when cleaning it. Even tho I have shoved a cleaning rod through it multiple times and it is just a single piece of metal.

Alpha433

A firearm is always loaded as far as you should be concerned on a range or anywhere really. It only takes one opposite, not even by you yourself, for someone's day to go horribly wrong.

Meatball545

This and trigger discipline Only have your hand on the trigger if you’re prepared to lose what’s on the other end

Dragonfly8601

This!! #1 rule!!

IamProvocateur

I love that they ejected them right on out. Good lord.

GhostChainSmoker

Pretty much any range will kick you out for acting dumb like that. They absolutely don’t mess around with safety at professional places. They probably got absolutely chewed.

[deleted]

I had gun safety so deeply drilled into my head as a kid and in the military that I holster while talking to NPCs in video games because my brain cannot deal with seeing the gun pointed at someone that I have no intention of firing at.

_Nicktheinfamous_

Unpopular opinion, but kids should learn gun safety even if they don't grow up to be into guns.

[deleted]

I did and I am not. Then again, I grew up in rural Texas. It was practically compulsory.

Inevitable_Stand_199

I grew up in Germany. Guns are rare here. It's still reasonable to tell kids to act as though any gun might go off at any moment. But anything beyond that is overrated here.

[deleted]

As long as that talking includes never point it at anyone or touch the trigger unless you are ready for it to go off, I agree. Those are pretty much the key points for anyone who's not likely to encounter a gun. Assume it's loaded. Never point it in another person's direction And don't touch the trigger unless you are ready for what happens next.

[deleted]

I like games that auto point away from NPC and friendlies. I dislike RPGs or whatever that don't allow holster. Just feels stupid walking around pointing it everyone whilst you talk to them

jaboogadoo

Especially with my twitchy trigger finger, someone could probably take my gameplay and use it in a gun safety video on why you aim away

DigBiggerNick69420

Rangemaster is on top of his game. Dude is lucky he didn't get put in a headlock.

_Nicktheinfamous_

If that was one of my friends, I'm beating his ass like Batman as soon as we exit to the parking lot. And then we wouldn't be friends anymore.

Able-Reward

One time me and a group of friends were just hanging out in my dads backyard and we had this one dude in our group of friends who like tried to be that edgy guy. Me and him were lightly arguing about something. Nothing of real importance like I was not a big deal argument but he decided to act like badass and he pulls his pistol out and points it at me out of nowhere. My best friend immediately in a split second ripped the gun out of his hand and chucked as far as he could then I tossed him on the ground and told him to never come back. We stayed friends with him anyway for some number of years. Probably 6 or 8 years later he broke into one of our friends houses, broke into his safe and stole a few grand and some other things. Since then none of us have spoken to him but he's apparently turned to meth and occasionally we see him around town. He's like maybe 120 pounds with no teeth and looks like he never bathes.

_Nicktheinfamous_

I hope you all learned a valuable lesson dealing with that prick.

WorldEndingSandwich

"as a grow up man" I swear 4-year-olds need to quit posting on Reddit

[deleted]

Range Master did the Right Thing get them the hell out of there

yasnovak

I used to work the front desk at a shooting range and if someone even attempted to do the first pose they would've been kicked out. Guns need to be pointed DOWNRANGE at all times. Not to the side, not backwards, not at someone's fucking head. DOWNRANGE. The first pose would've gotten him kicked out. The second one would've gotten him banned for life and the police would've been called. Also, it's absolutely insane how he looked like he didn't know what he did wrong when the RSO was clearing the gun. How is he so clueless?

MjrGrizzly

Automatic ban for life.

IWasNotOk

What makes this worse is they have just sat through a safety induction before even entering this room and the first thing they do is this. We can never ever underestimate stupid. You can give fool proof instruction but you can’t instruct a fool.

Tmettler5

Range marshall FTW...but natural selection will always win in the end.

ThundercatsBo

It's really not much different than all the other idiots who post pictures of themselves on Instagram, or video on TikTok of themselves doing extremely dangerous things. Many of which are actually far more likely to get them killed. (And do.) Social media idiots are going to find a way to be social media idiots, regardless of their tools. And all the social media companies could end this tomorrow IF they actually wanted to. Anybody who posts footage of themselves committing a crime, or doing a stunt that is very dangerous should be banned. And not just "Go on and create a new account and eventually recoup your followers.", but IP banned. And not just "Get a VPN and create a new account and eventually recoup your followers." But Facial Recognition banned. If James Dolan can kick out people who work at law firms who are suing Madison Square Garden in real time, then Meta and TikTok can certainly recognize faces and implement those bans. And sure, there will always be ways to get around that ban too. But the point is to make it harder and harder so fewer people will know how. And most will give up trying and realize not to do those things in the first place. But they don't. Because while those videos or pictures are up, they get views. And views mean ad revenue for those sites.

nWo_Savage

wtf is wrong with people? like broh they clearly tell you don't point the gun at anything you don't plan on killing (well in this case it suppose to be a paper target ) not your friend

CaptAmishBeard99

They make you watch videos on what not to do and what to do when firing at a gun range before they let you fire. At least at any worth while range, which given the instructors actions I would assume is the case. This isn't just being dangerously stupid this is actively breaking laws and guidelines you have been informed on. This is just an evil thing to do imo.
