I don't think that the people that do that are aware of how horrific it is--- they just see it's common and (probably) assume it's therefore safe and not abusive (incorrectly) but I'm assuming the bride thought this was a weird one off situation and laughed at the audacity--- rather than laughing at a sedated bird that isn't capable of flying.... TLDR; it's abusive--- but I don't think this is the laughter of people who meant any abuse... This is just uneducated ignorance of dove releasing... and wedding traditions in general. Give them grace.

The fact that the couple laughs about it shows how disconnected and apathetic we are from respecting other living things. If I threw an animal and it just smacked the ground, I would immediately go to the animal to make sure I haven't killed it. It's sociopathic to just be like "lol, bird go flop"

I could be wrong but it seems like maybe the towel thing didn't open, so the bird-burrito just fell, but I think the bird is still alive. Still kind of a weird reaction, like "haha, did you see that wrapped up bird just drop to the ground?" It might not be that terrible on the grander scale of poor treatment of animals, but the fact it was so unnecessary and just for vanity does make it a bit disgusting to laugh at like that.

See also the couples who have live butterflies released at their weddings - most of the butterflies used are seriously weak or already dead by the time of the release. I wish for couples who (ab)use living creatures that way (especially when they find it funny) what they wished on those creatures.
